  • InMobi study reveals that Indians love mobile phones more than TV

InMobi study reveals that Indians love mobile phones more than TV

MUMBAI: The Indian television industry which is pegged at a humongous Rs 37,000 crore (KPMG at India analysis 2012) may have some reason to worry if the latest study by Bangalore based independent mobile advertising network InMobi is to be believed. The study which is part of its – Mobile Media Consumption Report – claims that Indians prefer mobile phones over TV! It covered 2,004 respondents nationally.

According to this InMobi study, dual or second screening, the phenomenon of users spending time on additional electronic devices while watching TV, continues its upsurge. This implies that the number of hours a consumer spends on his mobile phone is rising rapidly and is also invading his TV viewing space. Take a look at some of the intriguing revelations.

63 per cent of users now actively spend time on a mobile device while watching TV, compared to 26 per cent in 2012. Now, that is quite a jump.
57 per cent users engage in social networking while watching TV.
79 per cent of Indian mobile web users plan to conduct m-commerce in the next 12 months.
65 per cent of Indian mobile web users are now as comfortable with mobile advertising as they are with TV or online advertising
80 per cent noticed mobile ads on their smartphone, while a majority of 48 per cent users experience these ads on mobile apps specifically.

Observing these trends, InMobi vice president & general manager India and south east Asia Phalgun Raju stated: “The tiny mobile phone has overtaken the mighty TV in India from a media consumption perspective. With over 850 million active mobile connections in India, the mobile marketing channel presents marketers an unprecedented opportunity to engage with the always-connected consumers. The onus is now on brands and content agencies to create compelling, engaging mobile rich media to capture consumers‘ attention.”

The study, developed with Decision Fuel, finds that mobile web users in India are increasingly influenced by mobile, with nearly a third of their media consumption time being spent on mobile devices.

Raju concludes: “The Indian app market is showing strong growth, as smartphone penetration continues to accelerate with lower and lower price points and mobile consumers turn to apps. Our research shows that on an average 7.1 apps are actively used by Indian consumers over a 30-day period. This has huge implications for both publishers and advertisers as they seek to garner an audience for their offerings and monetise through advertising.”

Interestingly, most broadcasters are now engaging with their viewers on social networking platforms like Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and have also launched several mobile apps to seek the attention of the ever so easily distracted audience.

  • InMobi introduces App Publish Distribution platform

InMobi introduces App Publish Distribution platform

MUMBAI: Bangalore-based InMobi, an independent mobile ad network, has announced the launch of App Publish, an Android app store distribution platform.

The free-to-use tool will allow Android developers to publish their apps across global app stores in just a few clicks.

According to the company while app discovery on Google Play is a challenge for developers and users alike, alternative channels such as GetJar, Mobango, Slide Me and several third-party app stores based in China are estimated to drive billions of downloads every year.

While these outside sources help developers reach millions of users in new markets, publishing to each app store independently presents several significant challenges like- Navigating complex international laws, various platforms‘ widely varied aesthetic and informational requirements, difficulties tracking and reporting download and install figures, the challenges of collecting revenue from smaller or international platforms in a timely manner.

InMobi‘s App Publish platform will allow developers to avoid these and other pain points that come from deploying an Android app globally, using proven intelligent technology to reduce the cost and effort to submit to multiple app stores.

InMobi head of product management for developer platforms Girish Prabhu said, “Paying for position and app discovery on Google Play is becoming increasingly expensive and ultra-competitive. The launch of App Publish serves to meet the mass desire from app developers to compete in multiple channels in a simple, profitable way. Early beta testers of App Publish have seen 30 per cent more downloads through these new app store channels.”

59 per cent of mobile web users comfortable with mobile ads: Study

MUMBAI: The appetite for mobile media continues to rise and that the mobile is not just a fundamental part of consumers‘ communication needs, but increasingly the core platform through which they access the Internet and engage with brands online.

To better understand changing media consumption usage and behaviours across the world, Bangalore-based mobile ad network InMobi has released the findings of its Mobile Media Consumption Report, a study of over 15,000 mobile users in 14 markets across all continents through its global mobile ad network, and research partners Decision Fuel and OnDevice Research.

The study reveals that mobile users are always-on, whether surfing the web while spending time with family (48 per cent), at a social event (45 per cent), commuting (60 per cent) and shopping (43 per cent). This creates a huge opportunity for brands and marketers to engage with consumers throughout the day unlike traditional advertising like print and TV.”

Mobile interactions increasingly influence buying behaviour: Overall analysis reinforces the shift towards mobile with 50 per cent of the average global mobile web user now using mobile as either their primary or exclusive means of going online. This has resulted in mobile devices becoming an indispensable shopping tool, gaining popularity as a viable shopping channel and now used throughout the research and decision-making process of a purchase.

Mobile advertising‘s proving to be effective across the entire purchase funnel:

    • 75 per cent of respondents admitted that they‘d been introduced to something new via their mobile device
    • 67 per cent feel that it had provided them with better options
    • 46 per cent said that they had made purchases using their mobile device

Encouragingly, 54 per cent of respondents reported that they had noticed ads while engaged in an app. In fact, a considerable 80 per cent of respondents were influenced by a mobile ad to download an app and 67 per cent went on to visit a brand‘s website immediately afterwards. Mobile advertising is not only helping to drive app downloads but also increase website traffic.

Ad format preferences are emerging for different user segments : The research found that 59 per cent of mobile users are now as comfortable with mobile advertising as they are with TV or online advertising. Whilst mobile ads in apps are the most noticed among mobile users, the study highlighted those different formats of mobile ads appeal to different segments of consumers. Globally, 54 per cent of users discover mobile ads via apps, 40 per cent on a search engine, 27 per cent on a retailer website and 23 per cent on a video website.

Mobile commerce surges: M-commerce continues to evolve and consumer adoption is high with 66 per cent of consumers surveyed having spent money on an activity via a mobile device. This will continue to increase significantly as 80 per cent of consumers plan to conduct mobile commerce in the next 12 months, a 21 per cent increase from where we are today.

Tewari concluded, “This study reiterates the industry stats on the mobile media consumption boom. With consumers now being increasingly receptive to mobile advertising and in-app ads, there has never been a better time for brands to embrace the use of mobile technologies. Finally, it highlights the fact that there is a real need for the industry to continue to rapidly innovate the ad experience and deliver rich, relevant, and timely content to the user.”

    InMobi introduces Lifetime Value Platform

MUMBAI: Bangalore-based InMobi, an independent mobile ad network, has announced the private beta launch of InMobi Lifetime Value Platform (LTVP).

The platform aims to help publishers and app developers to understand and engage their users better, thus ultimately increase revenues. It is a free-to-use platform.

The InMobi LTVP takes a three-step approach – Insights (Gain advanced user insights across app usage, user engagement, in-app revenues, and other behaviors within the app), Segments (Define granular user segments based on behavioral attributes such as monetary value of the purchase, time spent inside the app, number of app launches, or other custom events unique to the app) and Actions (Deliver rich in-app messages and modify app behavior at a segment level using targeted actions such as selling unique virtual goods, displaying highly customised ads, rewarding power users, or cross promoting other apps).

We noticed a need for a platform that helps app developers and premium publishers gain detailed insights into user behavior and deliver targeted actions in real-time."
