“Your music needs to have a soul at the end of the day”: Sanjay Chhabria

From Bollywood superstars to emerging indie musicians, artists of all genres and backgrounds are harnessing the reach and engagement of influencers to connect with fans, break down cultural barriers, and expand their audience reach.

Music industry is undergoing a profound transformation, driven by the rising tide of digital influence and the power of social media. At the heart of this revolution lies influencer marketing, a phenomenon that has redefined the way artists connect with their audience and promote their music.

In this article, Indiantelevision.com caught up with Everest Entertainment CEO Sanjay Chhabria, where he explained the profound impact of influencer marketing on the Indian music industry, examining how it has transformed the way artists promote their music, engage with their audience, and navigate the landscape of digital media.

    Edited excerpts

On influencer marketing shaping the music industry

Nowadays the trends have changed. Early days we used to just launch a song on YouTube and then the song used to perform if you have a certain number of subscribers. It used to perform on its own depending on the merit and demerit of the song. Things have changed now. Now it’s very important that music should have a hook step. It should have some sort of portion in the lyrics which has the potential to go viral. So it’s completely changed the way we started curating music. When we are trying to compose a curator song from a movie, we make sure we try our level best because it has to fit with the film. If you find some sort of a Way in which you can achieve both then great. So what we do is then you have that hook step, we get influencers on board like micro influencers, macro influencers etc. We deal with them sometimes paid, sometimes free. We get these hook steps recorded, reels made by them and then you have to plan it out at the end of the day. Before releasing a song, you need to have 40-50 reels ready and release those reels simultaneously so that the song catches everybody’s attention. That’s the way we try and create awareness so then it reaches the maximum number of people. That’s one way, doing the reels, having the hook step. Many times our songs don’t have a hook step. What we do is from a song, we give it to our choreographers maybe connected to the film or not connected to the film. We ask them to create a hook step out of it. So basically the idea and objective is to try and make the song as viral as possible on social media platforms, the upper platforms, the more urban platforms being Instagram and other ones like Moj, Chingari, Josh which caters to tier three audiences. It’s not easy now to just launch a song unless you have big names.

On your music label and YouTube channel

We have a music label Everest. We have a good library of about six seven hundred songs. These comprise film music and independent music. 25 per cent of my library is  independent music. The rest is film music. We will touch about four million followers now on our YouTube channel Everest Marathi which is one of the leading platforms today. We have the best quality content on this thing. We may not have the numbers, but our focus has always been quality over quantity.

On the type of content consumers look for

New trends are set with new innovations. Music has evolved over a period of time. You don’t know what works today. You have to keep on reinventing yourself, innovating yourself. It’s a constant process. But usually I’ve seen in the marathi space songs, which are connected to a little bit of folk. It helps a lot. The bigger numbers come from the smaller towns. The more grassrooted your music is, the more it penetrates into a larger number of audiences. I had released a film last year called Boys 4 that had a song, which was Gaav Sutana. It basically means a man is remembering his village life. That song was a slow starter but it has now crossed millions and it is growing steadily. It’s a song which every guy who’s come from the village resonates to. So if you have these kinds of themes then it will immediately strike a chord with the audiences. We do a lot of film music and you need to find that song in film music or you create independent songs around these popular themes. The music has to be good at the end of the day, just the thought alone is not enough. You need the music to be good enough as well.

On content and music degradation been witnessed in recent times due to influencers

Them being influencers, they manufacture all these reels. They have a very close-knit community. They support each other a lot. Like if you’re releasing a song I’ll create a reel of it and vice-versa. So the songs get that initial push, but I think what will happen is eventually it will become a case of too much. It will reach a saturation point. People eventually will get bored of it. Today look at Instagram reels. Everybody’s filming something or the other, everybody is not getting used to being earlier. It was bound to happen. Now it will become worse with AI tomorrow, with the kind of tools which will be available to people, they will shoot more songs. So you know this trend is going to become bigger. The question at the end of the day is you need good music. Your music needs to have a soul at the end of the day.

On TV, digital and OTT market

India is a diverse Market. Both these will coexist. Digital of course, is a rising market. More and more people are now consuming content on digital. Be it films, sports or daily soaps. A lot of people are now even watching daily soaps on OTT platforms. So that trend is of course there. But TV will not lose its value. TV is there to stay. There will be a strong market for TV. There will be a strong market for OTT also. In OTT, the challenges are getting money out of people. The subscription model is always a challenge. AVoD is strong for India. The advertising revenues on digital are growing on a year-round basis very fast. So AVod will always remain a good market. SvOD is where the challenges are. That all depends on the content offering of that platform. If the content offerings are compelling enough for people to subscribe they will. Just subscribing once is not enough. Retention is a bigger challenge for the same consumer not to leave the service. So customer acquisition and then customer retention are the challenges which are there and will always remain there. The TV audience is always there. The biggest fastest growing trend now is Fast TV, CTV or fast channels. We are by default habituated. We like to just press that plus button on the minus button on the remote to move channels. So that’s the advantage fast TV has. Most of the news channels are now available on fast TV.

On the future of the influencer marketing

At the end of the day content scores over everything else. Today if you have a bad film you may take the best of influencers and try to publicize it, it’s not going to work. People are going to sample the film and then reject it if your film is bad. It’s always content which rules everything. Influencers, according to me, are good for the advertising industry. In fact, I feel some of them are so overhyped today. People should actually properly do research. If I am taking an influencer, is he matching my profile? Just because he’s got two or five million or ten million followers. That doesn’t mean that profile matches the kind of profile my movie demands at the end of the day. So first, we need to do that exercise.

  • The human touch in an AI-powered world: Finding balance in influencer marketing

The human touch in an AI-powered world: Finding balance in influencer marketing

Mumbai: In the ever-evolving landscape of influencer marketing, where bytes and pixels dominate the scene, one might think that the organic essence of human touch is on the brink of getting lost in translation.

Algorithms and analytics dominate the discourse across multifarious industries. We are barrelling towards an ecosystem where the essence of understanding nuances and having layered thoughts can become a far cry. In this pursuit of excellence and unbridled optimization, anything and everything is susceptible to change.

Let’s hit pause and recalibrate our thinking machines for a moment and take a stroll down the avenues of influencer marketing. Here, authenticity reigns supreme. The foundation of any successful campaign is built on genuine connections and stories that resonate on a human level. It is this delicate yet potent human touch that transforms a simple message into a powerful narrative, engaging audiences with authenticity and warmth.

But, what about the dark cloud that hangs over this domain? The cloud that pumps obscure data with the intention of deceiving.

As the influence of the reel world and the real world intertwines, AI has emerged as a formidable guardian against fraudulent activities in influencer marketing. It meticulously navigates through expanses of data, discerning patterns and rigorously examines engagement metrics, identifying anomalies such as unanticipated surges in follower count or erratic engagement ratios, thus unveiling potential inconsistencies.

Through a careful exploration of audience demographics, AI unearths irregularities that may signify the presence of counterfeit followers or fabricated engagement. Additionally, it judiciously contrasts influencers’ engagement metrics against established industry standards, thereby facilitating a nuanced evaluation of authenticity.

Utilizing advanced methodologies in data analytics coupled with insightful sentiment analysis, AI proficiently differentiates between authentic engagements and those mired in duplicity. Consequently, brands are afforded the invaluable capability of making judicious collaborations fortified with discerning insights, thus navigating the intricate landscapes of influencer marketing with assured confidence and strategic precision.

While this issue persists, another challenge is catering to the exponential rise of smartphone users in India. It’s estimated that over 800 million people in this country use smartphones as the internet has penetrated all dimensions of society. This in itself is a puzzle for any brand to solve as there is no one-size fits all solution. India has always been a melting pot of culture and diversity. Finding vernacular influencers who resonate with niche communities has always been a colossal task.

Well, it used to be. With the influx of AI, we are no longer unequipped to deal with the challenges that we face today. AI tools are no longer merely backstage hands; they are co-directors, enhancing and elevating the message.

However, safeguarding the essence of human creativity and ingenuity is paramount. How can we ensure it isn’t eclipsed by the luminous advancements of technology?

What it might need is a curious expedition, exploring uncharted territories where technology dovetails with humanity. It might need to be backed with a thoughtful philosophy of ‘The Butterfly Effect’, with its essence in fostering a space where technology and humanity waltz in a seamless rhythm, each step synchronized to enhance and not overshadow the other.

We don’t want to create a tool to replace the human element but to complement it, creating a symphony of technological innovation interwoven with human intuition. It’s about nurturing connections that resonate with genuine human experiences and emotions, ensuring the narratives spun are not just heard but felt, echoing in the hearts and minds of audiences.

The promise lies in authentic narratives and fortified campaign integrity through vigilant fraud detection, that fosters streamlined workflows and data-driven decisions, technologically enriched by AI’s infinite potential, yet at the heart of it the human touch will continue to thrive, curate, and captivate.

On the most significant accomplishment or milestone for the company so far

On measuring success for yourself and the company

Success for us is a fusion of user satisfaction and platform evolution. We measure success not just by numbers but by the impact we create for brands and influencers. Continuous improvement and adaptability to the ever-changing market dynamics are key metrics in our success story.

I gauge success on both personal and organisational levels through various metrics. I find success in the impact we create within the industry, the value we provide to clients, and the growth of our platform. On a company level, key performance indicators (KPIs) such as campaign engagement, reach, and client satisfaction contribute to our success measurement. Ultimately, our success is reflected in the positive outcomes we generate for influencers, brands, and the overall ecosystem we operate in.

On the recognising influencer marketing as a strategy.

Collaborative marketing, when effectively executed by brands, creates a symbiotic relationship with influencers. By aligning values and goals, brands and influencers amplify each other’s reach, creating a win-win scenario for both parties. One of the primary benefits of influencer marketing is the ability to expand the reach of both the brand and the influencer. Influencers typically have dedicated and engaged followers, and by collaborating, the brand gains access to this audience, while the influencer benefits from exposure to the brand’s audience.

On IoT and AI boosting influencer marketing

IoT and AI are propelling influencer marketing by enhancing targeting precision. With data-driven insights and smart algorithms, brands can identify influencers whose audience aligns perfectly with their product or service, ensuring maximum impact. The integration of IoT and AI in influencer marketing enables brands to move beyond broad demographics and engage in highly targeted, data-driven campaigns. This not only enhances the effectiveness of influencer marketing but also ensures that brands can adapt to the ever-changing landscape of consumer preferences. AI algorithms assist in identifying the most appropriate influencers based on target audience demographics, interaction habits, and content relevance. The incorporation of AI improves the efficiency, scalability, and overall success of influencer marketing operations.

Despite limited resources and no prior industry knowledge, Shivashish’s unwavering belief in himself led to a remarkable 2700 per cent growth.

Starting at the age of 21, he defied the odds, and today, his agency collaborates with leading South Indian talent, crafting comprehensive influencer marketing campaigns that include strategy, talent identification, scriptwriting, pre and post-production, and thorough analytics. With a portfolio of over 200 actors and influencers, Intermentalist is a dynamic force in the industry.

Indiantelevision.com spoke to The InterMentalist founder and CEO Shivashish Tarkas on his journey, on the motivation behind starting the InterMentalist, and much more…

    Edited Excerpts:

On pivotal moments from your entrepreneurial journey, particularly during the early days when resources were limited; the most significant obstacles you faced in building InterMentalist and overcoming them

My major challenge as an entrepreneur in this field was the lack of awareness among consumers and business owners. I spent a lot of my initial days explaining every concept to potential prospects, concepts which never existed few years ago. The power of online and digital media was undermined unlike today. I started my journey during the time when social media was not kooked up as now. Thus, my initial obstacles were more around spreading awareness and then converting them into a business.

My second challenge was roping in clients. I was caught up in a deadlock which I had to break to move further. I started doing door-to-door marketing in business hubs of Chennai to see If I can provide basic services if not otherwise concerning online presence and social media (back then it was called social media marketing which lately got reinvented as digital marketing).

Third challenge was to convince prospects that its branding first and ROI second. The very reason why influencer marketing or digital marketing hasn’t reached at all levels in India is due to expectations of immediate results, immediate ROI. It just doesn’t work that way. Handling logistics was also a challenge in the initial years. Prospects who got converted into clients did not have any materials or source for us to create content for social media. Therefore, it became an added responsibility and at zero monetary.

On the motivation behind starting the InterMentalist and its distinguishing features from other agencies

There are three main incidents in my life which made me start InterMentalist.

First – I had one year to go precisely towards my college completion, My parents were called to the college campus for discussing certain issues which was non-academic. I was upset with the way they were treated in person or on calls. A decision was made by me that day – Whatever I do in my life, I shall ensure its not because of my degree and if at all I succeed, my college shouldn’t be taking credits for it. They thought they could bury me but they didn’t know that I was a seed. ?

Second – As I was travelling in my college bus on a summer morning, sweating all-time high, folks around either listening to music or sleeping as journey to college was too long, my bus stops at the signal and I see a white bus with fully air-conditioned standing next to mine. People inside were IT employees who were doing the same thing as what we were doing in our bus – listening to music, gossiping, sleeping or just lost in thoughts. Both of the buses shared 90 per cent of the journey together. When I got off the bus, a teenage mind of mine came to a conclusion that – The only difference between two was AC. People in both the buses enjoyed more or less same privileges in terms of working hours, family time, travel time. A decision was taken – I can’t live my life this way and something needs to be done about it.

Third – During exams, preferred travelling in bike and since the journey was long, used to hear a lot of motivational speeches. Mahatria who is the founder of Infinitheism during one of his speech citing his own personal life incident told a beautiful thing – “Do you want to become a typical 19-year-old or you want to become a 19-year-old who other 19 year old looks up to”. I believe that’s when my actual transformation began and there was no lookback.

Today the agency stands apart for its work done and the work talks for itself.

On the key strategies or decisions that you attribute  Intermentalist’s remarkable growth over the past few years to and advice that you would give to aspiring entrepreneurs looking to scale their businesses

At a personal level, I think what works for all entrepreneurs is having accountability of work, self-belief, and the perseverance to work towards one’s dream. As a company what works for us is that being a minimal setup, we offer timely solutions with a quicker turnaround time.

On your agency tailoring influencer marketing strategies to align with the preferences and sensibilities of the South Indian audience

Every state in the South is different from another and hence one cannot generalise under one umbrella. The culture and understanding varies from state to state and one influencer or actor known in one state will be completely unknown in other state. We take pivotal steps to pass on the right information to the brands and also ensure that clients are well-updated with the markets at ground levels. This certainly helps us in catering a curated campaign which can connect with people.

On some ethical considerations that influencers and agencies should be mindful of in the influencer marketing industry and InterMentalist’s approach to these concerns

Likewise, we have a zero-tolerance policy towards uncalled tantrums coming from influencers end during a campaign. Ease of working with an influencer is a basic measure which plays an important role in our strategy. Hence if any of the points in check list doesn’t comply – we strictly don’t work with them.

On exciting upcoming projects or initiatives that Intermentalist is currently working on, or any future plans for the agency that you’d like to highlight

There are many exciting projects and initiatives that we are working upon but I hope to discuss the same with you once it goes live.

GUEST ARTICLE: The perils of influencer marketing for brands

Mumbai: The pervasive impact of social media has not only transformed our personal experiences but also woven itself intricately into the societal fabric. This transformation has given rise to a modern marketing phenomenon: influencer marketing. Supplanting conventional marketing approaches, influencer marketing has emerged as a preferred avenue for both brands and consumers, elevating influencers to the status of contemporary social media titans.

Although influencer marketing has provided brands with countless advantages, it has also exposed them to numerous challenges.

Here are some perils of influencer marketing proving to be an eminent threat to brands:

Absence of an influencer directory: A great deal of influencer marketing campaigns fail mostly due to an erroneous choice of influencers. Despite the fact that there are several influencers available in the market, the lack of a universal marketplace or influencer directory that includes influencers across all platforms limits marketers’ capacity to select from a diverse range of creators suitable to their audience. Therefore, regardless of whether they are a good fit for their brand’s offerings or not, marketers often settle for influencers who are easy to access, undermining their reputation in the marketplace and limiting their reach.

Content fatigue: Have you ever encountered a situation as a brand when your content creators are generating more content than ever through marketing channels, yet the results of all that digital confetti are dwindling? When the audience is exposed to an excessive amount of content on the channels they typically access, they hit their saturation point and experience content fatigue. This might swiftly escalate to a major worry for businesses since it can lead to missed key performance indicators (KPIs) and a reduction in metrics, affecting the bottom line. Additionally, content weariness can make it difficult for marketers to capture viewers’ attention and keep them engaged.

Influx of intermediaries: Many brands still have to rely on multiple mediums of communication and chase creators, agencies, talent managers and PR partners for timely campaign executions. Unfortunately, the more the merrier concept does not hold relevance in this regard. The efficiency of the overall process gets compromised due a more complicated communication chain caused by the involvement of more intermediaries.

Rise in influencer fraud: The evident rise in influencer marketing has also led to a corresponding rise in fake influencers. According to a Statista study, over 49% of influencers engage in follower fraud. Utilizing bots and fake followers with a motive to create an illusion of popularity, influencers today are largely duping firms into collaborating with them. Due to the exaggerated engagement and bot audience, it has become challenging for marketers to find their social match as it becomes difficult to manually identify the right influencer, impeding their ability to build a devoted consumer base.

Lack of price standardization: As influencer marketing has grown over time, social media stars have become highly sought-after marketing partners for modern brands. As a result, influencer marketing companies and other third-party middlemen are utilizing this to play marketers into paying more by promising them higher interaction and reach. Because there is a lack of price standardization and transparency, brands end up falling for exorbitant markups.

Lack of insights: Depriving brands of real-time data like brand mentions, traffic, and conversions to an influencer’s particular content, vanity metrics fail to provide a real picture. Consequently, marketers are unable to assess campaign outcomes and influencer performance, undertake predictive analysis to gauge campaign success, predict the demand for upcoming content, and embrace data-driven decision-making based on meaningful insights, targeting improved results.

Lack of platform play: While influencer marketing has transformed how brands connect with their audiences, it’s concerning that many promising voices remain unheard due to limited access to platforms and accurate representation. This limitation greatly hampers the visibility and potential collaborations for budding influencers, preventing them from fully realizing their impact. As larger and more established creators often dominate the spotlight, the unique perspectives and creativity that smaller creators bring often go unnoticed.

Influencer marketing: A marketing marvel or a failure?

90% of influencers think influencer marketing is a powerful tool for marketing, according to an Influencer Marketing Hub’s report. In today’s technologically advanced industry, the efficiency of influencer marketing cannot be disputed. However certain threats have tainted the influencer marketing field, creating a plethora of difficulties for brands.

Technology-centric tools may be just what brands need to get away with these underlying dangers and uncover new heights.  Going beyond the traditional time-consuming processes, influencer management systems perform numerous integrations to identify an ideal match. Utilizing a huge database of influencers, these systems construct creator profiles based on a variety of factors, including location, genre, and content relevance, ensuring appropriate performance play. The development of creator persona goes hand in hand with the generation of the brand persona, and the two are then compared to determine the best fit. By offering data-driven solutions, influencer management tools allow businesses to target a large audience base and acquire a favorable response from the audience.

These tools not only enable marketers to discover the ideal influencer, but also combat content fatigue, avoid middlemen, guard against falling for false influencers, garner in-depth insights, and practice transparency, all of which would help them gain the most out of their influencer marketing efforts.

  • A saga: Micro-influencers and brands

    A saga: Micro-influencers and brands

Mumbai: Micro-influencers are stealing the show. With a social media presence that is larger than a normal person, but smaller than that of a celebrity, micro-influencers are making inroads into the hearts of not just consumers, but also of brands.

If one has to think about it, associating with micro-influencers offers a slew of advantages. Increased engagement, low cost, providing relatable content, offering out-of-the-box ideas, and forming intimate bonds are some of the benefits of having micro-influencers as part of the brand plan.

Indiantelevision.com spoke to industry experts about how micro-influencers affect consumer behaviour, why brands are shifting to this set of influencers, and more.

    Affecting consumer behaviour

Digital marketing agency, BC Web Wise director – growth engagements Aashna Iyer understands that the biggest value of the micro-influencer today is that the consumers can finally see themselves in marketing campaigns. “As a concept, micro-influencers are signs to the increasingly high-aspiration consumer that there are avenues to gaining exposure, visibility, and fame just by being themselves. What this does is, create loyalty towards the influencer, built off a stronger draw than a pretty face or fame. In a world where information is at our fingertips, micro-influencers bring relatable content that has an application in the consumer’s life, rather than just a cool factor.”

India’s first performance-based influencer marketing platform, DRIM head of Asia – global Yulia Aslamova poses a different question – why do people follow micro-influencers (creators with 10-15k followers)? “These creators may not be celebrities or widely recognized figures, but there are compelling reasons why we choose to follow them. We find ourselves associating with micro-influencers, drawing inspiration from them, and feeling a sense of connection.

When a micro-influencer references a product or service, it resonates with us in a way that feels similar to receiving a recommendation from a friend, neighbour, or family member. There is an inherent trust and relatability that comes with micro-influencers, making their endorsements more authentic and genuine.”

She adds, “Drawing from my expertise in the field, I’ve observed that consumers are more likely to trust and be influenced by micro-influencers who share their niche interests and possess genuine knowledge and passion in those areas. This trust translates into changes in consumer behaviour, as they become more open to trying out recommended products or adopting certain lifestyle choices.

The high engagement rates of micro-influencers further contribute to their impact, as they actively interact with their followers, fostering a sense of community and making consumers feel valued. Through their recommendations and personal experiences, micro-influencers play a significant role in product discovery, influencing purchase intent and driving brand advocacy.”

Aslamova tells, “Their relatability and social proof make their opinions influential, often leading consumers to follow their lead. As the landscape evolves, my team at DRIM Global collaborates with micro-influencers, leveraging their unique influence and using our practical algorithms to ensure that brands maximise the impact of their influencer marketing initiatives, ultimately shaping consumer behaviour and driving business growth.”

A self-serve influencer marketing platform for brand collaborations, Viral Pitch founder Sumit Gupta feels that micro-influencers have brought about a significant change in consumer behaviour by utilizing their genuine connections with specialized audiences. “They are able to influence product discovery, shape purchasing choices, and generate tailored content that strikes a chord with their followers. Through their relatability and credibility, micro-influencers have emerged as influential figures in shaping consumer behaviour.”

Performance marketing: The only way to survive in influencer marketing?

Aslamova firmly believes that influencers have become a powerful performance marketing channel for D2C brands. “Unlike the traditional approach that focuses on reach, impressions, and visits, working with creators at the bottom of the sales pipeline goes beyond just generating metrics. These creators transform into brand advocates and valuable business partners.

This approach ensures that the brands’ investment is justified and contributes directly to business growth. The outcomes become evident and mutually beneficial for both influencers and businesses involved.”

She also fathoms that influencers no longer need to struggle to approach brands or prove the credibility of their work. By engaging in performance marketing, the value they bring is clear and measurable, making it easier to collaborate with brands and showcase their effectiveness in driving results.

Aslamova is of the opinion that while influencer marketing remains a vital part of brand marketing, it is evident that the world is increasingly shifting towards digital ads and personalized communication with customers. “In this landscape, performance marketing holds tremendous potential for scalability and impact. It allows brands to leverage the digital space effectively, optimize their strategies, and deliver personalized messages that resonate with their target audience.

Performance marketing is all about results you can measure and depend on. Unlike traditional approaches that focus solely on reach or impressions, performance marketing allows brands to track real outcomes like conversions and sales, providing valuable insights into the return on investment (ROI). At DRIM we have successfully delivered upwards of 12 million in leads & sales for our brands.”

She digs deeper, “This data-driven approach empowers brands to make informed decisions and optimize their strategies for maximum impact. Not only is it effective, but it also offers cost efficiency by aligning compensation with actual results. You pay for the desired actions achieved, reducing the risk of ineffective campaigns and ensuring your marketing budget is wisely allocated. Furthermore, performance marketing brings accountability and transparency to the table. With clear visibility into campaign effectiveness, brands can establish trust-based partnerships with influencers who share the mutual goal of driving results.

By targeting specific goals and collaborating with micro-influencers in relevant niches, brands can achieve higher engagement and conversion rates. This focused approach ensures that your message reaches an audience genuinely interested in your offerings. Additionally, performance marketing enables continuous optimization and scalability. With real-time tracking and data analysis, brands can refine strategies, replicate successful campaigns, and adapt based on insights to achieve sustainable growth. By leveraging the power of performance influencer marketing, brands can confidently navigate the influencer marketing landscape, drive meaningful results, and unlock long-term success.”

Iyer is of the understanding that social media algos today are not friendly to organic growth. “This simply means that one channel or brand does not have the capability anymore to gain thousands of followers through a ‘let my work speak for me’ approach. Influencers, in my opinion, become a full-funnel tactic for breaking the brand’s echo chamber – almost a paid media channel in themselves. With an influencer, you simultaneously build brand awareness, impact consideration, and can drive conversions. This means that if you don’t index upon all these parts of the funnel, your campaign is incomplete. Especially in a world where consumers are open to experimenting with new products and services validated by an influencer.”

Gupta echoes the view that in influencer marketing, performance marketing plays a vital role in ensuring the survival of brands. “By emphasizing measurable outcomes, brands can drive concrete results and guarantee a return on investment. By concentrating on performance metrics, brands can fine-tune their strategies, recognize top-performing influencers, and make informed decisions based on data to achieve the highest possible impact and efficiency.”

Reasons for brands shifting towards micro-influencers, and the difference in strategy

Iyer of BC Web Wise gives a great analogy, “For a consumer, the micro-influencer is almost like that cool older didi or bhaiyya in school that everyone wanted to hang out with. Similar enough that they resonate, distanced enough that you yearn for inclusion. What they say or follow is more realistic than what a celebrity or someone with ‘star’ value would. It’s almost like the Tupperware kitty parties – except more mass! Now that’s a strong channel for any brand!”

She comprehends that the approach for leveraging a micro-influencer should be about reality. “How would the influencer use your product, where would they find it, what is the real use-case, and therefore how will it be packaged for the consumer… All these elements must be included into the campaign. Let the influencers build their own narratives, give them the space to make the brand look native to their environment. And give them an attractive conversion trigger – exclusive access, discounts, long-term benefit etc. that they can give their followers.

Unlike larger influencers, there is no value whatsoever to a big massy spray and pray campaign. Ideally you need a network of micro-influencers deployed over time, seamlessly bringing in brand messages, which create a long-lasting visibility for your brand, and do not trigger “how many sales in 24 hours” kinds of stress.”

Aslamova of DRIM points out that brands are increasingly drawn to micro-influencers for compelling reasons, backed by relevant statistics.

    ●    Micro-influencers consistently achieve higher engagement rates, with an average of around 3.86 per cent, compared to macro influencers’ 1.21 per cent engagement rate (Markerly study).

    ●    Micro-influencers bring a refreshing level of authenticity and relatability to their content. With their smaller but highly engaged audiences, they create a genuine connection that resonates with consumers.

    ●    Consumers are more likely to trust the recommendations of their peers, as 70 per cent consider them trustworthy over traditional celebrity endorsements (Collective Bias).

    ●    What’s more, micro-influencers offer better ROI, with 60 per cent higher engagement rates and being 6.7 times more cost-effective per engagement than influencers with larger followings (Influencer Marketing Hub). Their niche expertise allows brands to target campaigns effectively, as micro-influencers are seen as experts within their specific niche, providing higher relevance and resonance.

“As someone deeply involved in the influencer marketing industry, I strongly advocate for the power of micro-influencers and the unique marketing and branding strategies they offer. While mega influencers and celebrities may possess massive reach, it is the micro-influencers who truly excel in driving meaningful connections and influencing consumer behaviour. Micro-influencers, with their smaller but highly engaged niche audiences, bring authenticity and relatability to campaigns, resulting in genuine connections with their followers. Their ability to create targeted reach allows for precise targeting and higher relevance, ensuring that the brand message resonates with the right audience segments. Moreover, collaborating with micro-influencers is often more cost-effective, making it accessible for brands with limited budgets to achieve impactful results. Long-term collaborations with micro-influencers foster loyalty, brand advocacy, and sustained engagement, facilitating continuous changes in consumer behaviour.

I wholeheartedly endorse the strategies centred around micro-influencers as a highly effective and valuable approach in the world of influencer marketing,” she goes on.

Gupta of Viral Pitch brings out, “Micro-influencers are increasingly gaining the attention of brands due to their capability of building genuine relationships with a focused and engaged niche audience. When compared to macro-influencers or celebrities, micro-influencers have a modest following but provide more credibility and relatability. The advantage of partnering with micro-influencers lies in their proficiency in crafting content that resonates with specific niches, enabling brands to connect with a more suitable and responsive group of people. In addition, working with micro-influencers often proves to be more economical, allowing for greater engagement and lasting collaborations, which can ultimately lead to better conversion rates and deeper brand loyalty.”

Cost per action (CPA) working for micro-influencers

CPA is a performance-based approach that ensures brands only pay for specific actions or outcomes achieved through influencer campaigns.

In the CPA model, brands define the specific actions they want to measure, such as clicks, conversions, or purchases. “At DRIM all of this can be done seamlessly on our dashboard.

Our flagship analytical system will find the top-performing influencers across eight social networks within a database of 250k+ micro-influencers. Our 500+ managers will assist them in ensuring brand safety, delivering results and scaling your campaigns.

With our 250k+ micro-influencers, you can choose from a variety of payment models. Brands can even control the ROI of your campaigns,” mentions Aslamova.

She says further, “With micro-influencers, the CPA model becomes even more compelling due to their higher engagement rates and targeted audience. Statistics show that micro-influencers have an average engagement rate of around 3.86 per cent, significantly surpassing macro-influencers (Markerly study). This heightened engagement translates into a more receptive audience that is actively involved and ready to take desired actions.”

Iyer opines that one of the reasons the cost-per-action (CPA) model works well for micro-influencers is their high engagement rates. “Micro-influencers can also leverage affiliate marketing to monetize their influence. Through affiliate links or codes, they earn commissions for driving sales. This incentivizes them to create engaging content and encourage followers to take action. By combining the CPA model with affiliate marketing, micro-influencers can generate revenue and establish long-term partnerships with brands. This dual approach maximizes their earning potential while delivering measurable results for advertisers.”

“In the case of micro-influencers, the cost per action (CPA) model involves compensating them based on specific outcomes or actions, such as clicks, conversions, or sales, rather than a predetermined flat fee. Instead of paying a fixed amount upfront, brands engage with micro-influencers using a performance-based approach, where compensation is tied to the desired results. This method ensures that brands only pay for verifiable actions that directly contribute to their marketing objectives. CPA for micro-influencers emphasizes accountability and fosters partnerships focused on ROI, enabling brands to optimize their budgets and allocate resources more effectively based on real performance data,” Gupta concludes.
