Havas Media Group launches study to understand IPL’s impact on brand health

Havas Sports and Entertainment, which functions under Havas Media Group, in association with YouGov has launched Hi-CRICKET, a proprietary study to understand the impact of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021 in influencing brand health metrics across categories.

The study, led by the Havas Insight team, has respondents from key cities in India to get a deeper understanding of how a larger-than-life platform such as IPL helps influence mind measures. HI-CRICKET will also answer the role of premium media buys in impacting brand health, one of the most critical questions raised by advertisers today.

The respondents will be interviewed over five phases from 1 April 2021 to 1 June 2021 during IPL 2021. Each phase will track the impact of the game on brand health and capture shifts along with attributes that drive Meaningfulness as the league progresses.

Keeping in line with Havas Group’s Meaningful Brands philosophy, HI-CRICKET 2021 will help brands to further bolster their meaningful connect with consumers and will also identify the most meaningful campaigns during IPL this year. Havas’ Meaningful Brands framework constitutes of benefits brands offer across Functional (What does the product or service deliver?), Personal (How brands improve people's lives?) and Collective parameters (What’s their role in society?). Previous studies had suggested that all these benefits collectively drove brand performance.

Havas Media Group India CEO Mohit Joshi said that HI-CRICKET will help advertisers understand the overall impact of their association with IPL.

"This study will help advertisers understand the overall impact of their association with IPL. HI-CRICKET is the first initiative by Havas Insights and Havas Sports and Entertainment; we also intend to take the partnership into other sporting domains such as the Olympics, Hockey, Football, and Kabaddi," said Joshi.

YouGov India general manager Deepa Bhatia said, "Sports assets have impacted the recall of brands globally. YouGov panel constitutes data of 2 lakh active panel respondents who have participated in various surveys. During the IPL season, YouGov will consistently reach out to people who watch IPL to set up the study. Using Havas’ Meaningful attributes, the customized HI-CRICKET study will help us understand what drives meaningfulness for brands and to what extent are campaigns able to drive perceptions for brands based on functional, personal, and collective benefits."

  • No-nonsense Signify walks the talk in new IPL campaign

No-nonsense Signify walks the talk in new IPL campaign

NEW DELHI: Signify has rolled out a new TV campaign for this year's Indian Premier League (IPL), aimed at promoting its recently launched EcoLink range of fans and lights.

Instead of emphasising performance over-exaggerated product claims and marketing noise, Signify is trying to win over the audience by highlighting the durability and high performance of the EcoLink product range with this ad campaign. The humorous yet honest campaign has been developed by Publicis Communications and targets consumers looking for no-nonsense and high-performance products.

The new campaign includes four films; three featuring the fans range and one featuring the LED lights. The campaign will be also supported by a 360-degree integrated communication strategy including digital media and on-ground activation.

The EcoLink fans films depict the story of a young man who switches on the EcoLink fan expecting a level of relaxation that will help him sail through tough life situations such as a job interview, winning a lottery or propositioning a woman for marriage. This scene cuts back to reality where the narrator urges him to come out of his reverie and realise that the fan’s job is only to provide the most effective air circulation thanks to its strong motor. The essence of the narrative is succinctly captured in the tagline, Dumdaar motor wale EcoLink fans. No hawabaazi, just awesome hawa.

The film for EcoLink light bulbs also reiterates this same philosophy and urges the protagonist to focus on the brightness of the bulb instead of expecting it to deliver miracles. The video concludes with the tagline – Dumdaar brightness wali EcoLink Lights. No bright ideas, bas brightest light.

"We are excited about our latest TV advertising campaign to launch our EcoLink range of products. The quirky campaign has been designed keeping in mind EcoLink’s no-nonsense, honest yet hardworking personality and urges consumers to not believe in unsubstantiated and over-the-top marketing claims. With this campaign, we aim to make EcoLink synonymous with powerful performance and capture a piece of our audience’s mind with this clutter-breaking and entertaining narrative," said Signify Innovations India head – integrated marketing & communications, and commercial operations Nikhil Gupta.

  • Rahul ‘The Wall’ Dravid’s calm facade cracks in new Cred ad

Rahul ‘The Wall’ Dravid’s calm facade cracks in new Cred ad

MUMBAI: How many times have you seen the Indian cricket team’s former captain Rahul Dravid lose his cool and holler at an opponent? Chances are nil. Known for his calm and gentlemanly temperament, both on and off-the-field, ‘The Wall’, as he’s been dubbed for his rock solid Test match innings, has seldom been known to crumble even under the most intense, nail-biting match situations. So, it’s not surprising that a new ad for credit card payment app Cred, which shows him in a never-before-seen angry avatar, has been breaking the internet! Fans just cannot have enough of this spanking-new side of the cricketer.

So much so that, even current Team India skipper Virat Kohli could not believe his eyes and took to Twitter to share his disbelief saying, “Never seen this side of Rahul bhai,” with a shocked emoji.

The ad plays precisely on this sense of disbelief to promote Cred’s cashback and reward schemes, saying that the offer may sound as unbelievable and ridiculous as saying “Rahul Dravid has anger issues!” And then goes on to show the rarely-flustered cricketer losing his cool while stuck in Bengaluru’s infamous traffic jam. Dravid aces his road rage acting display, even going on to stand up through his SUV’s sunroof with a cricket bat in hand to holler, “Indiranagar ka gunda hun main!’ (I am the don of Indiranagar- a well-known locality in the metro).”

The ad, released ahead of the opening match of the 2021 edition of the Indian Premier League between Royal Challengers Bangalore and Mumbai Indians, went viral in no time and has garnered two million views already.

It even sparked a meme fest online, with some netizens listing it among Dravis’s best ‘performances’ and some blaming the cricketer’s new-found aggression on the Bengaluru traffic, saying it can do this to the best of us.

  • Marketers hopeful about consumer spending in 2021, advertising to regain normalcy by 2023

Marketers hopeful about consumer spending in 2021, advertising to regain normalcy by 2023

MUMBAI: As the entire world went into sleep mode in 2020 due to the Covid2019 pandemic, the marketing sector faced a drastic setback. According to a recent FICCI-EY report, 2020 was a watershed year for advertising spends, as the industry slowed down by 29 per cent, the highest one-year drop ever witnessed in the history of Indian advertising expenditure.

Traditional media faces setback, digital media stays intact

The Covid pandemic resulted in a drastic shift in the consumption pattern of customers, and being home-stuck with more time on their hands, many people started showing increased dependency on the internet before making any buying decisions. As a result, advertising in traditional media de-grew by 37 per cent in 2020. However, digital media remained flat, and was not badly affected by the new market trend.

Print media and radio, which were already on a downwards trajectory, continued to de-grow in 2020 as they lost some consumers due to reverse migration, cost-cutting, and changing habits. According to the FICCI-EY report, most of these lost consumers may eventually return as the market continues to grow, but some portion of the earlier consumer base will turn out to be a permanent loss.

Due to the decreased mobility of customers, OOH (out of home) and radio were also impacted. As people started maintaining strict social distancing measures, the experiential industry comprising events and cinemas too declined last year.

    Marketers optimistic about 2021

Even though the industry faced an unprecedented setback in 2021, marketers believe that advertising will grow by 27 per cent in 2021, and it will regain its earlier level by 2023. 88 percent of marketers believe that consumer spends will increase in 2021, while 12 per cent claim that it will stay the same.

As consumer spends are expected to increase in 2021, marketers believe that ad spends will also witness a rise this year. According to the report, 66 per cent of marketers expect that their ad spends would increase in 2021. However, 10 per cent of the marketers suggest that ad spends will reduce by over 10 per cent in 2021.

There are several factors that play their crucial role in determining the increased ad spends, and it includes key sporting events that include the Indian Premier League, Asia Cup, ICC T20 World Cup, and Olympics. Apart from these big-ticket events, several upcoming launches in the automobile sector, elections, growth of OTT, and mobile gaming could also contribute to rising ad spends in 2021.

In the meantime, the Covid crisis has accelerated direct-to-customers (d2c) initiatives in 2020. Most marketers enabled e-commerce channels during the lockdown, and even began to spend money to promote the same. Marketers during the lockdown period also experimented with online events, apps, communities, and martech. 74 per cent of the marketers expect to spend over 20 per cent of their spends on digital media, a sharp rise from 45 per cent of marketers last year.
