    Entries invited for IAAC New York Indian film fest

    NEW DELHI: The New York Indian Film Festival has invited entries for their next edition to be held in May next year.

    The films will be in four categories: fictional features which are above forty minutes, fictional shorts under forty minutes, documentaries of above 40 minutes and those that are below forty minutes. The Festival will be held from 1 to 5 May.

    The Festival will feature Indian Diaspora Cinema with films that feature the work of Filmmakers, Actors, Writers, Directors of South Asian descent living outside the sub continent. This may include films made by Non-South Asians that feature significant South Asian content, inspiration, subject matter.

    It will also have Indian independent cinema for films from the Indian subcontinent with a unique voice/message that may be labeled alternate, arthouse, reality, noir or independent cinema.

    While the regular deadline is 24 December, films can also be accepted by 8 February.

    Indian Film Fest at Netherlands to have a Shyam Benegal retrospective

    MUMBAI: The second edition of the Indian Film Festival at the Hague in Netherlands has arranged a retrospective of Shyam Benegal in which five of the noted director‘s films would be screened.

    The films that would be screened are Ankur (1973), Bhumika (1976), Suraj ka Satvan Ghoda (1993), Sardari Begum (1996) and Zubeida (2001).

    Other films that would be screened at the festival include Adaminte Makan Abu (Abu Son of Adam) by Salim Ahmed, Anhey Ghorhey Da Daan (Alms for the Blind Horse) by Gurvinder Singh, Chillar Party by Nitesh Tiwari and Vikas Bahl and Rajan Khosa‘s Gattu.

    The second edition of the festival will be held from 3 to 7 October.

    London Indian Film Fest to open with Gangs Of Wasseypur

    MUMBAI: The third annual London Indian Film Festival (LIFF), which will run from 20 June to 3 July, will open with Anurag Kashyap‘s action-packed ‘Gangs Of Wasseypur‘.

    Based on true incidents, the film is a revenge story set in the dynamic socio-political milieu of erstwhile Bihar, Wasseypur, a town in the district of Dhanbad.

    The festival will also screen a selection of cutting edge films from some of India‘s and the UK‘s hottest independent talents for the UK audiences. Remarked Festival Director Cary Rajinder Sawhney, “We aren‘t just showing Indian films for Indian audiences, but opening the door to the rich diversity of cinema in India today, to all audiences.

    Some of these films are kicking out the old stereotypes of Indian cinema, while the best filmmakers are starting to be recognised on the world stage, where they belong. It‘s great to be premiering these cutting-edge new films in London during a year when the city is celebrating its cultural richness.”

    The LIFF also has films and events for a wide range of audiences and includes industry events at BAFTA, exploring Indian/UK co-production and specially commissioned music and performance pieces. For the first time, the festival is also teaming up with Tate Modern to present a rare showcase in Indian experimental film made in Bangalore.

    The full programme of the London Indian Film Festival will be released on 21 May.

    Indian film fest in Abu Dhabi from 19 April

    MUMBAI: The newly formed Indian Film Society of the UAE (IFSUAE) in association with the Embassy of India (Cultural Wing) would hold a three-day film festival in Abu Dhabi from 19 to 21 April. The event will introduce the public to the film society and its activities.

    The three-day festival will also include seminars, lectures and dialogue with filmmakers. Through this festival, IFSUAE intends to facilitate education in the public in the knowledge, understanding and enjoyment of the art of Indian classic and contemporary films.

    Films such as Elippathayam, Kanasemba Kudureyaneri, Moner Manush and Umbartha‘ will be screened during the festival, which will also screen Arabic and Indian short films from UAE filmmakers and those made by Indian expatriate filmmakers. The directors of each of the four feature films being shown are scheduled to lead a seminar and discussion on April 20.

    The festival will be inaugurated by India‘‘s Ambassador to the UAE M K Lokesh. It will be attended by well-known film personalities including Adoor Gopalkrishnan, Girish Kasaravalli, Jabbar Patel and Goutam Ghose.
