MUMBAI: Production company Ivanhoe Pictures was launched in Toronto earlier this year by Ivanhoe Capital Corporation principal Robert Friedland, GreeneStreet president and co-founder John Penotti, and Beijing-based Ray Chen, founder and chairman of Beijing Premiere Media Company. At launch, the company said it would finance and produce film and TV projects that have broad global audience appeal, initially seeding opportunities in America and Asia, focusing on China, India, Korea and Japan.

Fox International Productions, which has a lucrative local-language business in Asia and elsewhere, is now teaming with Ivanhoe in a four-year, multi-picture co-financing deal for homegrown movies in India, Korea, China, Japan and Taiwan. The pact will kick off with Ivanhoe investing in 10 FIP-produced films in varying stages of production. The investment from Ivanhoe signifies the strength of FIP’s local-language business which is also active in Latin America and Europe.

KyaZoonga sells all tickets for Sachins match within 15 hours

MUMBAI: Within 15 hours Kyzoonga.com, the official online ticketing partner for Mumbai Cricket Association’s (MCA) 2nd India vs West Indies Test match, which will also pull down the curtains on Sachin Tendulkar’s illustrious international Test career, sold all the allotted tickets for the match.

Apparently, the site had crashed within minutes of opening sales on Monday because of heavy online traffic. The site witnessed close to 20 million hits in the first hour itself. The website remained clogged till very late as all the cricketing fans wanted to book a ticket for the over-hyped match. According to reports, the site had only 6,000 tickets for sale for the general public for the master blaster’s last match.

However, the objective of the organisers was to ensure wider reach and also that no person was allotted more than two tickets.

The buyers who have been successful in booking tickets can start collecting their tickets now from the Mumbai Hockey Association counters, next to Wankhede Stadium. Customers are required to get the validation documents as outlined on the site and on their confirmation page.

The buyers, who couldn’t book the tickets successfully but have seen a balance deduction, will be refunded soon.

  • Oogwave Brings Zero Email Initiative to India

Oogwave Brings Zero Email Initiative to India

MUMBAI: Thierry Breton, Chief Executive of Atos, launched the ‘zero email initiative’ in 2011. He advocated reducing internal emails by using improved communication applications and social media tools. Similarly, Ryan Holmes, chief executive of HootSuite, a social media management toolset described emails as “new pony express” and “an unproductively tool”. There is growing concern about emails reducing workplace productivity and Oogwave aims to finally address this problem in India.

Oogwave, an innovative new startup has taken up the mantle of eradicating the old world method of corporate emails. They have created a cloud based platform for businesses to share and communicate without emails. It helps you organize, create and share data with colleagues and clients. The data is universally accessible across all devices and the Oogwave app is available on iOS and android.

It has been estimated that managers spend between 5 to 20 hours a week just reading and writing emails. Some of the major productivity issues with emails are:-

    · E-mails frequently lead to information overload

    · Employees spend unnecessary time on routine communications like filtering incoming information and correspondence

    · Email storage is a nightmare for CIOs/IT managers, who need to invest in additional storage capacity and reduplication technology

Commenting on the platform, Mr. Gaurav Jain, CEO, Oogwave said – “In the last 10 years, there’s been a dramatic shift in the way companies do business. All our business information is digitalized – easy to store, share and update. We work in a knowledge economy with a social media literate workforce. The young knowledge workers want to do meaningful work. We at Oogwave understand the change and believe that enterprise social networks are a far better way of encouraging collaboration and freeing businesses from the restraints of overflowing inboxes.”

The platform has already seen huge adoption in the US, the UK, Eastern Europe and South Africa, among other countries. Over 3,400 companies are using Oogwave globally. Oogwave is expecting 3 fold growth in its customer base over 10,000 in next 15 months.

About users of the platform, 72 per cent of customers are from professional services — knowledge-based companies where content and information is the inventory. Most of the customers use Oogwave for internal communication and to store and share content while around 22 per cent are using team task management too.

The company has attracted funding from TLab, a division of Times Internet Ltd. It is planning to go for another round of fund raising in the next eight months to fuel growth plans.

  • Zee News targets Gen Y

    Zee News targets Gen Y

MUMBAI: ZMCL’s (ZEE Media Corporation Ltd) main Hindi news channel Zee News is targeting the youth demographic.

For starters, the management has given the channel and programming packaging a total makeover with bright and peppy colours being added. Fresh, zingy promos have been hitting the airwaves as part of a campaign titled ‘Khabrein apke rangon mein’ which tries to drive home the point “that news is never black and white, there are several hues to it.”

For some time now, the channel has been pitching that the Indian youth need to change their thinking to change the nation (soch badlo desh badlo). And this new campaign is another effort on the part of Zee News to lure the fickle but curious youth to tune in to its daily bulletins.

Says ZMCL CEO Alok Agrawal: “The aim is to be their eyes, ears, and conscience. The channel will be in tandem with their world, in sync with their energy. With ‘Khabrein Apke Rangon Mein’, we will interact with them, touch their life and wear their pride. We aim to empower, influence and impact the opinion of this youthful and vibrant India.”

“In today’s scenario the youth is interested in what is happening nationally and globally,” says ZMCL editor Sudhir Chaudhary.  “Our efforts will be to reach and connect with the viewers, especially youth and provide them with news that is contemporary, vibrant and topical.”

Many have tried but few have succeeded in hooking the quickly evolving young viewer – for too long. Will Zee News’ fresh push yield results?

  • Indian animation needs a global outlook

Indian animation needs a global outlook

MUMBAI: Among the key issues addressed by the recently concluded FICCI MEBC (Media and Entertainment Business Conclave) (South) in Bengaluru on 29 and 30 October was the state of the animation industry in India and what can be done to improve its lot.

The second day of the conclave saw a dedicated session titled ‘Emerging trends of Indian IP in animation and their exploitation’ with Turner International India senior director and network head for kids in south Asia Krishna Desai, Graphic India co-founder and CEO Sharad Devarajan, Shemaroo Entertainment director Jai Maroo, Krayon Pictures co-founder Nisith Takia and Greengold Animation founder and MD Rajiv Chilaka and Reliance Animation CEO Ashish Kulkarni as moderator.
Devarajan began by highlighting the need for a cohesive ecosystem favouring the country’s animation industry.

“Indian consumers today are used to seeing the best of the world and so, we need to transcend the national market and go to the international market,” he said, stressing the need to create content like that made by Stan Lee or Steven Spielberg. “Multi platform and global is how you have to think of stories today,” he said, pointing out how a version of Mahabharat was launched as 18 days, a re-imaging of the original by Graphic India at the San Diego Comic Con and went straight to Youtube.

Chilaka made a special reference to Chhota Bheem as a kids’ icon while speaking of Greengold’s huge success in the field of animation. “We have grown from just four to over 300 in 12 years. No one knows which show will work, so we have to just give it a shot. Chhota Bheem started off as just 10 products and now it is available in more than 3000 across 30 country stores. We didn’t realize that it would be a phenomenon but now we are confident about making a movie every year,” he said, pointing out that while IP monetisation was happening, it was equally important to build good infrastructure around it to help harness IP better.

Maroo said Shemaroo would help in distribution and marketing even though it wasn’t actively involved in the creation of animation. “There are people with great production and artistic capacity for whom we can work on aspects like music, distribution and marketing. The reason why characters like Bal Ganesh and Chhota Bheem work well is because of their sheer stickiness. We should have IP with an Indian soul but an international story. What the west has is sharp screenplay that translates across boundaries. That is what we lack,” he said.

Desai opined there wasn’t enough investment in animation and pointed out the difficulties in creating animated content. “There is less advertising revenue for a kids channel (Turner), so we also have less money to invest in new content,” he said.

Kulkarni said, “In India, animation is positioned as a kids’ genre,” to which, Devarajan gave an example of the Japanese, who have moved Anime from kids to a sophisticated audience. “Their characters have elasticity and a soul that appeals to various demographics. Why aren’t we creating any Clash of the Titans or Lord of the Rings?” asked Devarajan.

Chilaka said they needed to come up with interesting ways of promotion to grab eyeballs, citing the example of Raju. “We timed Raju to release three weeks before the football world cup and on TV, we did a premiere during the semi-final,” he said.

Maroo pointed out that very few screens were available across the country for animated movies, thereby restricting viewership. “This industry is the best when commerce meets creativity,” he said. Takia felt not many people understood the business even if they were superlative on the creative front. “We can call ourselves successful only when we galvanise the creative population,” added Devarajan. Maroo rounded off saying: “The future will be about how many different revenue platforms you build.”

  • Puja festival – A great platform for brands to engage

Puja festival – A great platform for brands to engage

MUMBAI: Many brands are planning to use the puja festival at various pandals to engage with the consumers. The product range can be as wide as possible. Starting from soya bean nuggets to aerated products brands can make use of this huge platform as a great place for engaging and delivering experiences to the worshippers who will throng in huge numbers across several pandals especially in East and North India. Brands must leverage this opportunity as they are able to address a wide spectrum of audience from kids to adults to elderly people; and thus helping brands to deliver that extra mile through brand experience. Let’s examine how brands can enrich themselves and establish a strong connect with the audience at the various pandals.

Relevant Brand Connect: The essence of the brand should be captured with firsthand experience. Vijayadhsami is the most auspicious day for most parents to make their kids learn and start their beginning to step into the educational world. This is a brilliant opportunity for writing instrument brands to connect with tomorrow’s audience. Catch them young to stay connected with your brand. People especially in the East are avid travelers and sincerely make use of their LTA to visit new holiday spots. Travel and tourism brands should try and explore it to the maximum advantage by capturing some of the tourist spots in the most dramatic manner to bring them closer to the brand.

Right Brand Experience:  Give a proper structure to deliver the brand experience. For example an audio and television brand can create a mini auditorium to deliver great sound and picture clarity to give the consumer that original and natural experience at the venue. Brands like Dolby can really capitalise by educating and promoting their sound features with live demonstration and firsthand experience.

Interactive engagement: Make use of the best of technology to make your consumer engagement interactive. Touch screens and use of apps will intrigue customers to take maximum advantage. With so many Pandals located at various places, downloading of apps at the venue which gives you all information on various activities at various pandals will excite the consumers to download the information using their mobile. Some famous devotional songs can also be made available for downloading at the venue to bring in some emotional connect with the festival and the relevant brand.

Relevant Target audience: You will witness people from all strata of the society queuing up at all pandals. So one need not worry about the brand fit to be present at the pandals. A mixed population can be reached with the relevant product and brand and thus giving you an immense opportunity for branding your product at various touch points.

With the economy slow down and limited marketing budgets, I am sure most brands will use this platform to propagate their brands in the most engaging manner. What’s more with festivals like Puja becoming popular year after year it’s one of the best platforms for marketers to pump in money and increase their brand saliency.
