    India – Pakistan match registers 288 million viewers

    MUMBAI: The most anticipated clash of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2015 created Indian television history as 288 million viewers (TAM data CS4+ extrapolated to the universe using a standard conversion factor) tuned in to watch India take on Pakistan on 15 February, 2015.

     

    The game was the most watched television event in India in the last four years, since the finals of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2011.

     

    The match between archrivals rated 14.8 TVR (TAM data M15+ ABC) across Star network including DD. The match rated 11.9 TVR (TAM data M15+ ABC) on Star network and 2.9 TVR (TAM data M15+ ABC) on DD. The India – Pakistan game delivered across town classes led by the top six Metros rating 17.2 TVR and 1million+ towns rating 15.5TVR (All data TAM data M15+ ABC).

    Star unleashed a host of innovations for the biggest spectacle in the country. The first ever broadcast in six languages of the India – Pakistan game received 76 per cent of the viewership from Hindi and regional feeds and the balance 24 per cent from English validating the multi-lingual strategy pioneered by Star.

     

    A disruptive ‘Mauka’ ad campaign, which went beyond cricket on the field and leveraged fan passion in a unique way, went viral with over 17 million views online. Star roped in the most prominent voice in Indian cinema, Amitabh Bachchan, for India’s biggest game as he debuted as a commentator with the Star Sports panel of Kapil Dev, Shoaib Akhtar, Rahul Dravid and Sanjay Manjrekar for the India – Pakistan game.

     

    The India – Pakistan clash at the World Cup took social media in India by storm as 324,000 consumers spoke 500,000 times about the match, generating a potential three billion impressions. The match dominated conversations on Twitter, with 10/10 trends on Twitter Web, and 15/15 trends on Twitter Mobile, India spoke about nothing else. Indian fans were hopeful of India’s victory, and #Indwins was used 90,000 times, starting well before the game ended. The Star Sports campaign #wontgiveitback was used 24,000 times, and the second installment of the ‘Mauka’ campaign was viewed half a million times within hours of its release.

    MUMBAI: The India vs Pakistan cricket matches are always a nerve tester for players, but this time the test was not restricted to the green field alone. The test went on to the creative desks of advertising agencies. The mission being: to make a unique presentation for their client and garner viewer attention.

    The marketing blitz was started by Star Sports, the official broadcaster for the ICC Cricket World Cup, when it launched a TVC emphasising on the history of the two teams in 50 overs World Cup since 1992. Named Mauka (opportunity), the TVC depicts how Pakistan has never been able to burst crackers after a match against India in the World Cup. The TVC starts with a young man buying crackers in 1992 when Pakistan played against India for the first time in the World Cup. Pakistan lost the match and since then after every four years he gets the box of crackers out but Pakistan loses. Eventually his kid starts getting optimistic and removes the box but Pakistan continues to lose, so the dejected father and son keep waiting for a mauka (opportunity). The campaign has been planned and executed by Star India and its internal creative team.

    Star, as an extension to the mauka campaign, has now launched another TVC. This time it emphasises on how India has never won a match against South Africa in the World Cup. The two teams face each other on 22 February and it remains to be seen what Star comes up with after that.

    If Star’s TVC was about competition and comparison, Pidilite came up with a totally different concept. The brand used the emotional quotient of the neighbouring countries to garner attention with its todo nahin jodo (don’t divide, unite) campaign. The film opens with an arched gate. One soldier each from both sides is seen parading and marching. Each is trying to outdo the other, and as they go through their marching routine, the Indian soldier notices the peeled shoe sole of the other soldier. Fearing a loss-of-face, as crowds look on, he looks appealingly at his rival on the other side. The other soldier waves his arms about in a flurry of movement following which the shoe is shown as being fixed. A slow motion replay reveals that the soldier has in fact pulled out a tube of Fevikwik and mended the shoe instantly, the action hidden by the speed of his movements. The march continues and the soldiers salute each other at which point, a Super appears on screen while a VO is also heard saying –Fevikwik. Todo nahin, Jodo! (don’t divide, unite).

    Commenting on the campaign O&M executive chairman & creative director South Asia Piyush Pandey told Indiantelevision.com, “Fevikwick is a brand of bonding so while there was animosity everywhere we decided to take the path of unity. The ad depicts competitiveness but ends with a smile and Fevikwik is about bringing a smile on the face of everyone in the world. The ceremony is something that happens every day.” 

    The ad is buzzing on social media, and will certainly trend for a while. While the entire world was supporting either of the teams, the Pidilite ad successfully brought a smile to each and everyone irrespective of their domicile.

    Madras Rubber Factory (MRF) also launched its campaign during the India vs Pakistan match. The film begins with the Indian cricket icon Virat Kohli getting a call from a girl and Formula 1 driver Narayan Kartyekein connected to the technical team in the racing circuit. Both of them are given five minutes to reach their destination. Kohli drives a sedan while Karthikheyan drifts on his racing car. Both start racing to meet their respective deadline. The ad emphasises on the tyres and with a motto to establish itself as all utility tyre brand. The film ends with the message– ‘There’s a lot riding on us.’ That is symbolic of the hopes of millions of Indian fans who want the team to return with the World Cup just like MRF tyres that undertook the journey of making the players reach safely to their destination. The ad has a very abstract ending. 

    Speaking about the campaign Lowe Lintas executive director G V Krishnan asserted, “MRF has been serving the country for over 60 years by providing new age solutions in the tyre category. We have been in the forefront of tyre technology and go to great lengths to test the performance of our tyres and subject them to rigorous tests on the race track.  All with an intent to provide the very best of customer experience. We chose Virat and Narain as both are performers and stretch themselves to deliver consistently. The story with Virat and Narain depicts how both perform their task cut out effortlessly on a MRF tyre which was born on the race track to perform on any road.”

    On the target audience, he said, “The entire Indian Diaspora was our target. It certainly communicated the message that we were trying to and we have received good feedback.”

    Indian telecom network Airtel also used the platform to launch its One Family One Plan scheme. The brand used family drama as its unique concept. The ad shows how a child is being extremely nice and sweet to his father. The Airtel One Family One Plan enables member of the family to share his or her plan with the other. So the kid behaves nicely to his father to get blessed with a share of the family postpaid plan. The mother is also very much present throughout the ad and encourages the kid. The ad uses famous Bollywood song Phoolon ka taroon ka sab ka kehna he ek hazaroon mein meri behna hai with some modification. Keeping the tune same, the song is re sung where the behna (Sister) is replaced by papa (father). 

    Speaking about the commercial Taproot co-founder and chief creative officer Santosh Padhi said, “The TVC has nothing to do with sports. We decided the cricket World Cup as the right time to launch the campaign. The ad is made to depict family emotions as the product is one family one plan. Depending on the product, we execute our creative plans and we did the same this time too.”

    Dettol India also used the platform to launch its Maa Mane Dettol Ka Dhula (mother trusts only Dettol) campaign. The hygiene product manufacturer launched two TVC’s during India – Pakistan clash. Both the commercials emphasise on the mother’s care for their children. Dettol dettol chants are used in various parts of the ad.      

    Cricbuzz.com, a property of Times Internet which provides all round cricket coverage of international  and other domestic cricket tournaments from around the world has launched its first marketing campaign in the form of TV ads. It revolves around the concept Cricket Ka Keeda To Hoga Hi, Jab Ho Cricbuzz Ka Mobile App, which translates to – The Cricket Bug will surely bite you, when you have the Cricbuzz mobile app on your smartphone. The TV ads present real life scenarios and how the Cricbuzz App changes the way you react to them.

    Cricbuzz Milk Ad: The ad starts with a man engrossed in his phone while entering the door. He apparently was asked to get milk by his wife. When the wife sees him she asks for the milk, he replicates the bowling action and throws the packet on her head. When he sees his wife’s stunned face he says, Bouncer tha, duck karna tha na baby! (baby! You should have ducked, it was a bouncer).

    Packaged food brand Lay’s, too came up with a new ad titled Yeh Game Hi Hai Taste Ka (the game is of taste). The brand has used the timing as its unique selling point. The World Cup timings are indeed problematic for a cricket fan. The Ranbir Kapoor starrer TVC emphasises on how Ranbir successfully manages to rescue his friends out from their respective work place to catch the World Cup action live on TV. 

    Mobile app Saavn also roped in Ranbir Kapoor for its pitch jo bhi ho playlist saavn ka ho campaign. The video emphasises on how an Indian gets carried away by the world cup fever and uses abusive language to depict emotions.

    Another video from Saavn sees Ranbir informing viewers on the new ways of playing music. Narrating rhythmic dialogues the film star explains the evolution of mobile music. The video ends with Ranbir saying Saavn daalo Music barsao dialogue and entering a theater.

    Besides the new advertisements, many brands kept their old TVCs running during the World Cup. E-commerce venture YepMe continued with the Shah Rukh Khan starrer TVC. Ceat tyre too stayed with the chik (sneeze) ad featuring Irfan Khan. The TVCs were well complemented by innovative L bands throughout the match. 

    Overall, the ICC Cricket World Cup is turning out to be an exhibition of TVCs where creative minds are going all out to leave an impact on the viewers’ mind. While some are going for high profile celebrities, others are trying to win hearts conceptually. Todo Nahi Jodo is amongst the most popular videos on YouTube and certainly leads the lot.

    MUMBAI: Roy does not quite go well with the moviegoer; a confusing film moving at snail’s pace with nothing happening through its lengthy trudge, the film had fair collections on the opening day thanks to names of Ranbir Kapoor and Arjun Rampal in the cast.

     

    The film maintained about same figures on Saturday but suffered a huge drop of about 50 per cent on Sunday because of India Pakistan World Cup match. The film managed weekend collections of Rs 24.9 crore.

    R Balki’s experiment of a ventriloquist played by Amitabh Bachchan landing his rich baritone to an aspiring mute actor, Dhanush, fails to catch the audience’s fancy. While Bachchan may still be a media star, casting him in such a film is tricky business, Dhanush has little to charm the Hindi audience. Shamitabh does not add much to its already deficient weekend, ending its first week with a figure of Rs 17.6 crore.

     

    Baby continues to make the most of a run of poor oppositions over last three weeks. The film adds a reasonable Rs 6.5 crore in its third week to take its three week total to Rs 75.3 crore.

     

    Khamoshiyan has collected Rs 75 lakh in its second week to take its two week total to Rs 6.5 crore. Forced horror film sans content don’t work. A disappointing outcome for the investor.

     

    PK has added Rs 20 lakh in its eighth week. The film has put together Rs 329.95 crore in eight weeks.

    NEW DELHI: Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore has promised to look into the case of All India Radio’s (AIR) Twitter handle on Sunday re-tweeting obnoxious anti-Pakistan tweets by some of its followers after India beat Pakistan in their opening World Cup cricket match.

     

    In its response, the Twitter handle of News Service division of AIR has denied there was anything obnoxious in its re-tweets but said it is open to any inquiry.  

     

    AIR invited tweets wishing team India the best when the India-Pakistan World Cup match was under way in the Adelaide Oval on Sunday afternoon.

     

    “Give your best wishes to #TeamIndia for #CricketWorldCup using #WCFirSe. Best will get re-tweet from us,” said a tweet.

     

    “This is within the scope of Prasar Bharati. Whoever is handling the Twitter account must have done it in excitement. People tend to get excited, but a certain grace must be maintained,” Rathore said.

     

    “India’s explosive win over Pakistan at #AdelaideOval. Hindustan decides Pakistan’s #GharWapsi #WCFirSe,” a tweet originally in Hindi, which was re-tweeted by the AIR News’ verified account @airnewsalerts read. The handle is the “Official account of News Services Division, All India Radio.”

    Madison Communications COO Kartik Lakshminarayan said, “I am surely going to watch the match and have already made my plans. Around 150 of us will book a place and watch the match live. It is indeed a time to celebrate and obviously India’s victory is what we will be cheering for.”

     

    Maxus managing partner head of the north and east regions, Navin Khemka asserted, “It’s a big day for India, and I would say it’s a super Sunday. The match starts at 9.30 in the morning and it can’t be any better. And as an advertiser I must say this match is very important in context to the tournament. Fans and spectators in India will be looking forward to this match and a good start here can make the tournament a very special one.”

     

    Hats Off Productions founder J D Majhetia said, “India – Pakistan match is a never miss game for me, since the time I started understanding cricket I don’t think I have missed an Indo – Pak match. Last time I flew to Chandigarh with my family when the two teams met in the semifinal of 2011 edition. This time we are planning a mass gathering in one of the studios. I have already announced that there will be no shoots on 15 February because of the match.”

     

    The match is also big in terms of commercial aspect. If sources are to be believed then Star, the official broadcaster of World Cup in India, has hiked its ad rate by around 200 per cent for the India – Pakistan match. However, if an advertiser wants to buy a slot only for this particular match, then the hike is around 350 to 400 per cent. During a normal league match, the ad rate fluctuates between Rs 5 to 10 lakh for a 10 second spot depending on the magnitude of the match. For the India vs Pakistan match, Star is selling a slot for Rs 20 to 25 lakh.

     

    Any cricket lover would not like to miss a single minute of a match of such substance. And this season there are a number of options for a cricket fan to catch the action.

     

    Television: One can sit with a hot cup of tea and breakfast in front of the TV and enjoy every moment of the match. After the 1983 World Cup victory of Kapil Dev led India in Lords finale, cricket became bigger than a sport; it established itself as a religion. A religion that follows no narrow fragmentation or communal barriers. A six from the bat of Indian batsman was cheered by all, close moments saw prayers to respective God’s in different ways but for one unified reason. Victory got smile, defeat resulted in agony.

     

    Cricket World Cup is indeed a festival of unity in India celebrated throughout the country. With development and growth in the number of television sets in the country, it became a key medium to connect with the mass and World Cup emerged as the biggest event in the second largest populous country of the world.

     

    India is one the largest market and the conversion ratio of advertisements to sale is also maximum in this country and hence during Cricket World Cup creative and captivating advertisements are launched by big brands to enhance their reach.     The biggest cricketing extravaganza is knocking at the door and ad inventory is filling fast, but there are a lot of issues to be debated before investing for the event. 

     

    Cricket in India has reached an abysmal low with Supreme Court intervening to restore the integrity of the sport. Several players’ name also came under scrutiny and no clear verdict was sentenced, so the honesty of players is also a matter of concern for the fans. World Cup 2015 will be played in Australia and New Zealand and would be extremely difficult for Indian viewers to restrict themselves to television due to odd timings. Moreover heartthrob of billion Indians and the God of cricket – Sachin Tendulkar – will not be playing this edition of the World Cup. Investors can play safe by investing on IPL, which will start days after World Cup and hence the commercial value of the tournament is ought to be questioned. 

     

    Commenting about the commercial interest of the World Cup, Madison Media COO Karthik Lakshminarayan says, “Various factors like current performance of team India, odd timings, upcoming IPL and the fact that it is the end of a financial year the commercial preparation of the event may take a back step. But World Cup still is an important event and if India performs well things may change dramatically.”

     

    Maxus head of the north and east regions Navin Khemka is of a different opinion. “All I can say is that despite all the challenges World Cup is the marquee event in cricket. This World Cup is also seeing the emergence of new advertisers who are traditionally not big, but are emerging on cricket. Earlier we would have a sense of key categories who will dominate the game. That is changing; it shows the aspirations of a new India taking shape to be a part of the biggest sporting event,” he says. 

     

    Announcing the initiatives, Star India COO Sanjay Gupta had earlier said, “The World Cup is the biggest event for Indian consumers. The last edition was watched by 90 per cent of TV viewers in the country, making it the largest aggregation of consumers possible. With India as the defending champions, the whole country is set to follow the team’s defence of its title in Australia and New Zealand and we, at Star, plan to make this World Cup, a ‘Cup for All’. We will introduce many firsts and innovations in sports broadcasting to take the great game of cricket to the next level and provide an unprecedented viewing experience to the millions of cricket fans in India.”

     

    The broadcaster has already announced Amitabh Bachchan’s entry as a commentator. Moreover this edition of the tournament will be telecast in regional languages, which opens the door for regional advertisers to air their commercials. First time brands like Nestle, Marico,Yepme.com, Paytm, Raymonds, Pidilite, Lloyd have joined the usual cricket partners.

     

    As per sources, Star is selling a 10 second ad slot for more than Rs 4 lakh and the ad inventory consists of over 40 sponsors from various fields.

     

    Ad rates during such marquee event floats with progress, as cricket is a game of uncertainty. And if India starts performing well the ad rates will also reach new heights. It remains to be seen if the tournament manages to retain its charisma and develops as a big thing in cricket crazy nation.
