NEW DELHI: Doordarshan earned a sum of Rs 57.1 crore in the 23rd e-auction of its free-to-air DTH platform Freedish on 19 October, with 14 channels coming into its fold.

Prasar Bharati CEO had said earlier this year that the aim was to reach 112 channels within a year or so, when FreeDish moves from Mpeg2 to Mpeg4, for which official clearance is still awaited.

Doordarshan deputy director general C K Jain told Indiantelevision.com that while 10 television channels had come back, four channels had won bids to fill vacant slots.

Doordarshan had set a reserve price of Rs 3.7 crore per slot (as in the last few auctions) for the online e-auction, but all the bids were between Rs 4 to Rs 4.2 crore.

Sadhana National, which is a new entrant, bid the highest with Rs 4.2 crore. On the other hand, nine channels bid Rs 4.1 crore and four channels bid Rs 4 crore.

The other new entrants are Sony Mix, the Big Magic Ganga, which is a new Bhojpuri channel from the Reliance Group, and Home Shop18.

The channels whose licences had expired and got renewed are: ABP News, India TV, Cinema TV, Enterr 10, 9XM, Dabbang, Masti, Chardhi Kala Times, B4U Movies, and Maha Movie.

In the 22nd auction on 22 September, it managed to auction eight slots for around Rs 31.3 crore.

Jain said Freedish will be encrypted shortly from Mpeg2 to Mpeg4 to keep a tab on the number of subscribers, but it would remain free-to-air.

Currently, Freedish has 64 channels including its own channels, and Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha TV.

  • India TV regains top slot with strong programming

India TV regains top slot with strong programming

MUMBAI: India TV’s Aap Ki Adalat episode featuring comedian turned actor Kapil Sharma has seen a 101 per cent rise in its ratings as compared to the show’s previous episode. This subsequently played a pivotal role in taking the channel back to the number one slot in week 38 in Hindi News channels segment. Kapil’s humour quotient paired with India TV chairman and editor-in-chief Rajat Sharma’s array of clever questions seems to have worked like magic. What’s more, alongside the flagship show, the channel’s weekday prime time show Aaj Ki Baat with Rajat Sharma as well as Chunav Manch – India TV’s Bihar Conclave, also garnered good ratings during the same week.

As per data shared by BARC India on Indiantelevision.com’s request, the channel’s ratings jumped from 1967 in the last four weeks (week 34 to 37) to 3948 in week 38 from a sample of over 1 lakh viewers in the Hindi Speaking Market (HSM). This makes India TV the most viewed channel in the Hindi news segment in week 38.

The good ratings, however, doesn’t faze the editor-in-chief. Speaking to Indiantelevision.com, he says, “We have always focussed on content. Ratings come automatically.” In fact, Sharma had an inkling that the episode with Kapil would be a hit with the audience. “The first indication that the show would be a hit was when I noticed the audience present in the studio enjoying Kapil’s answers,” he adds.

According to Rajat Sharma, Kapil’s interesting anecdotes won the audience over during the show. “Kapil in Aap Ki Adalat was spontaneous. While answering my questions, he narrated some interesting anecdotes, which the audience liked. The presence of Bhojpuri star Manoj Tiwari in the studio and his ‘jugalbandi’ with Kapil helped in making the show a bigger hit,” he informs.

It is interesting to note that the two Sharmas have previously made an appearance together on screen last year on Colors’ Comedy Nights with Kapil Sharma, where Rajat Sharma was invited as a guest.

In the Hindi News channels space, Zee News has been at the number one spot as per BARC for the last two weeks. On the other hand, India TV has also been at top of the ladder many a times over the last few months

MUMBAI: Riding on a spectacular response, both in terms of numbers & critical acclaim to its special initiatives over the last 2 elections, India TV’s announces the launch of Chunav Manch. This will be a full-day long Mega-Conclave focused on Bihar elections.

The channel that has gained a huge reputation for its top-notch on-ground initiatives over last few years, hold many promises for the avid political watchers & analysts through this initiative. As it is a norm with all India TV events, even this Conclave will be studded with the biggest political names those have direct stakes in these elections.

What makes these elections highly anticipated & a top news event is that many are viewing them as a some sort of a report card to ruling BJP/NDA regime in the centre and others are keen to see how a slightly desperate looking tie-up of various parties ‘with different ideologies’ be able to fare in the litmus test.

While top politicians will discuss & debate their own visions & beliefs and question others’ views for the state, there will be a determined battery of top journalists and top state influencers grilling each of them on issues of genuine importance.

The participants who have so far consented to attend the summit include Bihar CM Nitish Kumar, Former CMs Lalu Prasad Yadav & Jitan Ram Manjhi, BJP President Amit Shah, JD(U) President Sharad Yadav, Union Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad, LJP President Ram Vilas Paswan, Former Deputy CM Sushil Modi, Actor & BJP Leader Shatrughan Sinha, Actor & BJP MP Manoj Tiwari amongst others.

Chowdhuri said, “I would like to specially thank our MD and CEO Ritu Dhawan not only for the appreciation and recognition but also for placing trust and giving me a free hand to handle the sales in a fiercely competitive scenario.”
