    TV Today board recommends final 45% dividend for FY 2020

    BENGALURU: TV Today Network Limited (TVTN) reported 15.5 per cent and 6.3 per cent growth in consolidated revenue from operations (Op Rev) and consolidated profit after tax (PAT) respectively for the year ended 31 March 2020 (FY 2020, year or period under review) as compared to the previous year ago (FY 2019). Consolidated simple operating EBIDTA for the year under review increased 8.2 per cent as compared to FY 2019.

    TVTN reported consolidated Op Rev of Rs 857.22 crore and Rs 742.24 crore for FY 2020 and FY 2019 respectively. Total Income for FY 2020 increased 15.6 per cent to Rs 900.53 from Rs 778.92 crore in FY 2019. Consolidated PAT for FY 2020 was Rs 139.36 crore as compared to Rs 131.10 crore in FY 2019.  Consolidated simple operating EBIDTA for FY 2020 was Rs 215.95 crore (25.2 per cent of Op Rev) as compared to Rs 199.58 crore (26.9 per cent of Op Rev) in FY 2019.

    The board of directors of TVTN recommended a final dividend of Rs 2.25 (45 per cent) per equity share of Rs 5 each for FY 2020. The parent company of the group had earlier paid an interim dividend of Rs 20 per equity share on October 22, 2019. The total dividend for the financial year 2019-20 amounts to Rs 22.25 or 445 per cent per equity share of Rs. 5 each.

    Segment revenue

    TVTN has four segments: television broadcasting (TV); radio broadcasting (radio); others; and newspaper publishing. TV and other segments reported growth in revenue and operating results, while radio and newspaper publishing segments had decline in revenue and the company reported operating losses from these segments.

    TV segment operating revenue grew 14.4 per cent to Rs 698.96 crore in FY 2020 from Rs 611.15 crore in FY 2019. The segment’s operating result was flat in the period under review at Rs180.81 crore as compared to Rs 180.82 crore in the previous year.

    Radio segment operating revenue declined 36.2 per cent in FY 2020 to Rs 14.86 crore from Rs 23.30 crore in FY 2019. Radio operating result was a higher loss of Rs 14 crore in FY 2020 as compared to a loss of Rs 4.74 crore in FY 2019.

    Others segment had operating revenue of Rs 115.73 crore in FY 2020 which was 45.3 per cent higher than the Rs 79.63 crore in the previous year. Others segment operating result at Rs 23.03 crore in FY 2020 was more than twice (grew by 115.3 per cent) from Rs 10.69 crore in FY 2019

    Newspaper publishing business operating revenue declined 1.6 per cent to 28.87 5.74 crore in FY 2020 from Rs 29.30 crore in FY 2019. The company reported operating result of Rs 0.37 crore in FY 2020 as compared to a loss of Rs 2.53 crore in FY 2019.

    Let us look at the other numbers reported by the company for FY 2020

    TVTN reported consolidated total expenditure of Rs 682.60 crore for FY 2020 which was 18.7 per cent higher than the Rs 574.99 crore in FY 2019. Consolidated cost of materials consumed during the period under review was 23.6 per cent lower in FY 2020 at Rs 2.48 crore as compared to Rs 3.25 crore in FY 2019. Consolidated production cost in FY 2020 increased 16.1 per cent to Rs 91.96 crore from Rs 79.24 crore in the previous fiscal. Consolidated Employee Benefit Expenses in FY 2020 increased 12.7 per cent in FY 2020 to Rs 251.07 crore from Rs 222.69 crore in the previous year. Consolidated Finance costs increased by 243.7 per cent in FY 2020 to Rs 2.83 crore from Rs 0.82 crore in the previous year. Consolidated other expenses increased 24.5 per cent during the year under review to Rs 295.78 crore from Rs 237.48 crore in FY 2019.

    BENGALURU: The combined weekly ratings of the top 5 English news channels in week 36 of 2019 rose just 2.2 per cent as compared to week 35 – the combined weekly ratings of the top 5 English news channels in week 36 and 35 of 2019 were 2.038 million weekly impressions as compared to 1.994 million weekly impressions respectively. Three of the five channels in week 36 of 2019 saw their ratings increase, two saw them decline. While the five channels in  Broadcast Audience Research Council of India (BARC) weekly list were same, there was a slight tweaking in the ranks – channels with ranks one, two and three in week 36 of 2019 were same as in week 35, while ranks four and five swapped ranks.     As in the previous week, Republic TV, Times Now and DD India were ranked first, second and third in week 36 of 2019. India Today Television moved one place up to rank 4 while CNN News18 dropped a place to rank 5 during the week under review.

    Republic TV scored 0.664 million weekly impressions in week 36 of 2019 as compared to 0.610 million weekly impressions in the previous week. Times Now scored 0.480 million weekly impressions in week 36 of 2019 as compared to 0.460 million weekly impressions in week 35. DD India while retaining rank third, saw ratings declined to 0.333 million weekly impressions in week 36 of 2019 from 0.372 million weekly impressions in week 35. India Today Television at fourth rank in week 36 of 2019 scored 0.298 million weekly impressions as compared to 0.266 million weekly impressions in week 35. CNN News18 saw ratings decline to 0.263 million weekly impressions in week 36 of 2019 from 0.286 million weekly impressions in the previous week.

    Republic TV tops as most-watched private English news channel in new TRAI tariff regime

    BENGALURU: In week 5 of 2019 (Saturday, 26 January 2019 to Friday, 1 February 2019), the last week that Broadcast Audience Research Council of India (BARC) had published data on its website before the implementation of the new TRAI tariff regime, pubcaster Doordarshan’s English news channel DD News had sprung a surprise. DD News had run ahead of all its private peer genre channels and was the most-watched English news channel based on viewership data with 1.503 million weekly insertions in BARC’s weekly list of top 5 English news channels  (All India (U+R) : NCCS AB : Males 22+ Individuals). The private English news channel Republic News was the second most-watched channel in the English news genre with 0.725 million weekly insertions. Both the top English news channels, public as well as private, in week 13 of 2019 are free-to-air (FTA).

    BARC has recommenced putting up weekly viewership data on its website starting with week 13 of 2019 (Saturday, 23 March 2019 to Friday, 29 March 2019). The ranking status quo for the top three was the same – DD News topped viewership data in week 13 with 0.737 million weekly impressions, followed by Republic TV at second spot with 0.618 million weekly impressions. Hence, the Arnab Goswami headed Republic TV was the most watched private English news channel in the country.

    At third place was Times Now with 0.421 million weekly impressions. At fourth spot was Network18’s CNN News18 with 0.286 million weekly impressions very closely followed by India Today Television with 0.284 million weekly impressions. In week 5 of 2019, it was India Today Television that was ranked fourth followed by CNN News18.

    TV Today numbers flat, radio segment shows improvement

    BENGALURU: The owners of the most watched news channel in the country, TV Today Network Limited (TVTN), reported 11.6 percent increase in operating revenue and a reduction in loss from its Radio Broadcasting segment for the quarter ended 31 December 2018 (Q3 2019, quarter or period under review) as compared to the corresponding year ago quarter (Q3 2018).

    Overall, TVTN reported 6.3 percent higher year on year (y-o-y) operating revenue for Q3 2019 at Rs 199.43 crore as compared to Rs 187.54 crore. Total Income in the quarter at Rs 205.99 crore was 6.9 percent higher y-o-y as compared to Rs 192.76 crore. The company reported standalone profit after tax or PAT of Rs 39.19 crore for Q3 2019, almost flat (1.2 percent higher) as compared to Rs 39.73 crore in Q3 2018. Standalone total comprehensive income for the period under review was also 1.2 percent higher y-o-y at Rs 39.19 crore as compared to Rs 38.74 crore in Q3 2018.

    Simple operating EBITDA was 2.1 percent higher y-o-y in the quarter under review at Rs 61.61 crore (30.9 percent of operating revenue) as compared to Rs 60.32 crore (32.2 percent of operating revenue.

    TVTN has three segments – Television Broadcasting (TV); Radio Broadcasting (Radio); and ‘Others.’ The company’s TV segment is the largest contributor to its numbers. Among the news channels TVTN has is the Hindi News channel Aaj Tak, which is the most watched news channel in the country going by Broadcast Audience Research Council of India weekly data.

    TVTN reported 3.9 percent y-o-y increase in revenue for its TV segment at Rs 170.52 crore in Q3 2019 as compared to Rs 164.14 crore. The company reported 4.3 percent y-o-y fall in the segment’s operating profit at Rs 51.91 crore in Q3 2019 as compared to Rs 54.26 crore.

    As mentioned above, TVTN reported 11.6 percent y-o-y increase in operating revenue for its radio segment for Q3 2019 at Rs 7.01 crore as compared to Rs 6.28 crore. The radio segment’s operating loss fell to Rs 2.15 crore during the period under review from an operating loss of Rs 6.10 crore in Q3 2018.

    TVTN reported 29.1 percent y-o-y increase in operating revenue for its ‘Others’ segment at Rs 22.24 crore as compared to Rs 17.24 crore. Operating result of the ‘Others’ segment for the quarter increased 17.5 percent y-o-y to Rs 5.74 crore from Rs 4.88 crore.

    Standalone total expense in Q3 2019 increased 7.7 percent y-o-y to Rs 145.59 crore from Rs 135.16 crore in the corresponding quarter of the previous year. Standalone production cost increased 7.2 percent y-o-y in Q3 2019 to Rs 19.81 crore from Rs 18.48 crore in Q3 2018. Standalone employee benefit expense during the quarter under review increased 10.2 percent y-o-y to Rs 55.37 crore from Rs 50.2 crore in the corresponding period of the previous year. Standalone other expenses in Q3 2019 increased 7.1 percent y-o-y to Rs 62.65 crore from Rs 58.52 crore in Q3 2018.

    MUMBAI: The English business news genre saw no changes for the new week of the new year as compared to the last week of the previous year; everyone’s placed on the same positions as they ended the previous year. Aaj Tak continue to groove on the same tracks in the rural, urban and U+R genres as it did the previous year.

    English News

    Republic TV started week 1 in leading position in the English news genre with 731 impressions ‘000. Times Now came in at second place with 583 impressions ‘000. India Today Television stood in third position with 284 impressions ‘000 for the first week of 2019 after ending the last week of year 2018 on fourth position. CNN News18 took the fourth position with a tight 280 impressions ‘000 compared to India Today Television. NDTV 24X7 with mere 191 impressions ‘000 took the fifth position.

    English business news

    The English business news genre saw no changes for the new week of the New Year as compared to the last week of the previous year. CNBC TV18 started off in the first place with 442 impressions '000. ET Now and BTVI took second and third positions with 105 impressions '000 and 64 impressions '000. CNBC TV18 Prime HD took fourth position with 19 impressions '000.

    Hindi News (U+R)

    Aaj Tak continued a dominative start in the Hindi news (U+R) genre with 140,656 impressions ‘000. Zee News is placed in the second place with 119,908 impressions ‘000. News18 India takes the third position with 114,993 impressions ‘000. ABP News stands in fourth position with 109,341 impressions ‘000. India TV is placed in the fifth position with 101,902 impressions ‘000.

    Hindi news rural

    Aaj Tak is positioned first in the Hindi news rural genre with 63,672 impressions ‘000. ABP News and News18 India are at second and third positions with 53,357 impressions ‘000 and 50,674 impressions ‘000, respectively. Zee News with 47,496 impressions ‘000 is placed at the fourth place. India TV took the fifth spot with 37,983 impressions ’000.

    Hindi news urban

    Aaj Tak stood on top with 76,984 impressions ‘000 followed by Zee News with 72,412 impressions ‘000. News18 India took the third place with 64,319 impressions ‘000. India TV is placed on the fourth position with 63,918 impressions ‘000. ABP News took the fifth place with 55,983 impressions ‘000.

    MUMBAI: ABP News moved up from fifth position to take the second position in the Hindi news urban genre in BARC week 50. ABP News also moved two places above and stood in the second position in the Hindi news (U+R) genre. The English business news genre saw no changes again this week.

    Republic TV maintained its lead in the first position in the English news genre with 1217 impressions ‘000. Times Now came in at second place with 1053 impressions ‘000. India Today Television moved a place above to the third position with 583 impressions ‘000 replacing CNN News18 which dropped to the fourth position with 543 impressions ‘000. NDTV 24X7 with 385 impressions ‘000 continued to stand at the fifth position.

    English business news

    The English business news genre yet again saw no changes this week. CNBC TV18 continued to stay in the first place with 491 impressions '000. ET Now and BTVI stood in their second and third positions with 145 impressions '000 and 62 impressions '000. CNBC TV18 Prime HD also held on to its fourth position with 47 impressions '000.

    Hindi News (U+R)

    Aaj Tak continued to stay on top of the Hindi news (U+R) genre with massive 232,664 impressions ‘000. ABP News moved two places above and stood on the second position with 196,823 impressions ‘000. News18 India dropped to the third position with 164,313 impressions ‘000. India TV moved to the fourth place with 147,558 impressions ‘000 as Zee News dropped two slots to the fifth place with 134,567 impressions ‘000.

    Hindi news rural

    Aaj Tak is positioned first in the Hindi news rural genre with 110,049 impressions ‘000. ABP News and News18 India are at second and third positions with 106,265 impressions ‘000 and 774,68 impressions ‘000, respectively. India TV moved a place above and took the fourth spot with 64,762 impressions’000. Zee News with 59,580 impressions ‘000 is placed at the fifth place.

    Hindi news urban

    Aaj Tak stood on top with 122,615 impressions ‘000 followed by ABP News with 90,558 impressions ‘000 which moved above from fifth position to take the second position. News18 India stood at the third place with 86,845 impressions ‘000. India TV is placed at the fourth positions with 82,796 impressions ‘000. Zee News dropped from the second position and took the fifth place with 74,987 impressions ‘000.

    BENGALURU: TV Today Network Ltd (TVTN) reported 3.5 percent year on year (y-o-y) increase in standalone operating revenue at Rs 163.29 crore for the quarter ended 30 September 2018 (Q2 2019, quarter or period under review) as compared to the Rs 157.80 crore for the corresponding year ago quarter (Q2 2018). Total income increased 5.3 percent y-o-y to Rs 171.59 crore in Q2 2019 from Rs 162.89 crore.

    Simple operating EBITDA was 10.5 percent lower y-o-y in the quarter under review at Rs 44.62 crore (27.1 percent of operating revenue) as compared to Rs 49.87 crore (30.3 percent of operating revenue). The company reported 5.7 percent lower standalone PAT of Rs 29.50 crore for Q2 2019 as compared to Rs 31.29 crore in Q2 2018. Standalone total comprehensive income for the quarter under review was 4.6 percent lower y-o-y at Rs 29.85 crore as compared to Rs 31.29 crore in Q2 2018.

    Segment numbers

    TVTN has three segments – Television Broadcasting (TV); Radio Broadcasting (Radio); and ‘Others.’ The company’s TV segment is the largest contributor to its numbers. TVTN reported 0.2 percent y-o-y increase in revenue for its TV segment at Rs 140.21 crore in Q2 2019 as compared to Rs 139.86 crore. The company reported 1.5 percent y-o-y decline in the segment’s operating profit at Rs 42.52 crore in Q2 2019 as compared to Rs 43.16 crore.

    TVTN reported 43 percent y-o-y increase in operating revenue for its radio segment for Q2 2019 at Rs 5.84 crore as compared to Rs 4.09 crore. However, the radio segment’s operating loss increased to Rs 4.49 crore during the period under review from an operating loss of Rs 2.92 crore.

    TVTN reported 24.3 percent y-o-y increase in operating revenue for its ‘Others’ segment at Rs 13.87 crore as compared to Rs 13.78 crore. Operating result of the ‘Others’ segment for the quarter declined 58.3 percent y-o-y to Rs 0.84 crore from Rs 2.01 crore.

    Standalone total expense in Q2 2019 increased nine percent y-o-y to Rs 126.64 crore from Rs 116.15 crore in the corresponding quarter of the previous year. Standalone production cost reduced 7.8 percent y-o-y in Q2 2019 to Rs 14.23 crore from Rs 15.44 crore in Q2 2018. Standalone employee benefit expense during the quarter under review increased 9.5 percent y-o-y in Q2 2019 to Rs 52.05 crore from Rs 45.53 crore in the corresponding period of the previous year. Standalone other expenses in Q2 2019 increased 16.5 percent y-o-y to Rs 52.38 crore from Rs 44.96 crore in Q2 2018.

    BENGALURU: Arnab Goswami-headed Indian English news channel Republic TV has continued an uninterrupted lead of the genre since its launch in May 2017. Republic TV led the genre with 0.553 million weekly impressions in week 15 of 2018 (Saturday, 7 April 2018 to Friday, 13 April 2018) according to Broadcast Audience Research Council of India’s weekly data for the top-five English news channels—All India (U+R) : NCCS AB : males 22+ individuals. BARC had reported 0.652 million weekly impressions for Republic TV for week 14 of 2018.

    In the meanwhile, the ratings of the genre have recorded a new nadir–the lowest combined weekly ratings of the top-five English news channels for 2018 until week 15 were 1.678 million impressions, 19 per cent lower than the previous weeks combined ratings of the top-five English news channels of 2.071 million impressions in the previous week. The 11th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL 11) commenced in week 15 of 2018 and the ratings of news television channels were most likely affected. Most of the matches are played during the primetime of GECs, news channels as well as other genres.

    All the five channels in BARC’s list remained the same with the same ranks in week 15 of 2018 as compared with week 14. As a matter of fact, the first three ranked channels have retained their places and order in BARC’s weekly list of the top-five English news channels through the first 15 weeks of 2018. All the channels, however, had lower ratings in week 15 as compared with week 14 of 2018.

    Republic TV was followed by Goswami’s former channel–Times Now–for which BARC reported ratings of 0.488 million weekly impressions in week 15 of 2018. Times Now had ratings of 0.595 million weekly impressions in the previous week. Continuing on at its regular third rank was India Today Television with 0.265 million weekly impressions in the week under review as compared with 0.363 million weekly impressions in the previous week.

    At fourth rank was CNN News18 with 0.219 million weekly impressions in week 15 of 2018 as against 0.293 million weekly impressions in week 14. At fifth rank was the Prannoy and Radhika Roy led NDTV 24×7 with 0.153 million weekly impressions in week 15 as compared with 0.168 million weekly impressions in week 14 of 2018

    BENGALURU: The English news genre benefitted from the state elections results that were declared early this week. In the week leading to the Gujarat elections, the genre’s ratings climbed and that climb continued in week 50 of 2017 (Saturday, 9 December 2017 to Friday, 15 December 2017) as channels put forth their guesstimates about who would win one of the dirtiest fights during recent Indian elections. No abuse and misuse of emotions was spared by politicians who wanted to prove that the junta – the voter was still with them, or to attract that additional vote from the electorate.

    In week 50 of 2017, as per data by Broadcast Audience Research Council (BARC), the combined ratings of the top five English news channels (All India (U+R) : NCCS AB : Males 22+ Individuals) increased 22 percent to 2.889 million impressions as compared to the immediate trailing week. The top five channels retained their ranks from week 49.

    As has become the norm since its launch in week 19 of 2017, the Arnab Goswami led Republic TV topped the genre with 20 percent higher ratings of 0.982 million weekly impressions in week 50 as compared to the 0.819 million weekly impressions in week 49. Goswami’s former employer, Times Now, was at second rank with 14 percent higher ratings during the week under review at 0.864 million weekly impressions as compared to 0.759 million weekly impressions in week 49 of 2017.

    India Today Television was at third place with a 36.3 percent hike in ratings to 0.462 million weekly impressions in week 50 from 0.339 million weekly impressions in the previous week. CNN News 18 was at fourth rank with a 41.2 percent growth in viewership to 0.329 million weekly impressions from 0.233 million weekly impressions in week 49. At fifth place was the Prannoy and Radhika Roy-led NDTV 24×7, which saw its viewership grow by 15 percent to 0.252 million during the week under review from 0.219 million weekly impressions in week 49.
