    Change in independent directors at Sun TV

    MUMBAI: The sun has set for certain independent directors at Sun TV.

    Nicholas Martin Paul, Mandalapu Krishna Harinarayan, and Ranganathan Ravi Venkatesh ceased to be directors as of the end of yesterday (25 September 2024) on completion of their respective second terms as independent directors.

    It may be recalled that Sun TV notched up a standalone revenue of Rs 4,630.19 crore in the year ended 31 March 2024 as compared to Rs 4,023.40 crore in previous corresponding year. Profit after tax was Rs. 1,875.15 crore as against Rs. 1,674.53 crores in the previous year.

    Amitabh Bachchan turns narrator for Warner Bros Discovery’s new series

    Mumbai: Warner Bros. Discovery, the leading global media and entertainment company, is in celebratory mode with India’s “Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav” on its 75th year of Independence and is all set to unveil its new series, The Journey of India, on October 10. Narrated by Bollywood legend Amitabh Bachchan, who is also the face of Incredible India, the series is ready to memorialise the country’s rich tapestry of heritage, innovation and contemporary marvels that have paved the way for the country’s cutting-edge advancement.

    The six-part special series premieres globally on the streaming platform, discovery+, in India, the US, the UK, and the Philippines. It will be broadcast in more than 140 countries, including India, Japan, Singapore, France, Switzerland, UAE, Egypt, Brazil, Iran, and Kenya, among others, on the Discovery network of channels.

    The series weaves a tale of India’s legacy with contributions from a range of esteemed personalities and leaders. Spanning a wide range of subjects, this one-of-a-kind series provides an in-depth look at the nation’s progress, influences and accomplishments during the past 75 years; from advancements in science and technology and our ambitious and successful space missions to the world of cinema that not only entertains but also inspires.

    From fascinating stories of faith found across the length and breadth of the country to a diverse food culture that is adored around the world, India in the last 75 years has slowly but steadily made its presence felt on the global stage. Featuring an extensive collection of historical footage, it also hears from a stellar line-up of respected personalities and subject matter experts.

    The Journey of India will premiere in India on Discovery Channel, TLC, Discovery Science, Discovery Turbo and DTamil. More details on the series will be announced in the coming weeks.

    Subhash Chandra elected to Rajya Sabha as independent member

    NEW DELHI: Essel Group Chairman and noted philanthropist Subhash Chandra has been elected to the Rajya Sabha as an independent candidate from Haryana.

    Chandra was supported by the Haryana unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party who receoived 29 votes.

    His election coincides with the Essel Group completing ninety years of existence.

    Chandra launched the first private satellite television channel Zee TV in 1992 and later the first private news channel Zee News.

    For his outstanding contributions to the media industry, Dr Chandra was awarded the 2011 International Emmy Directorate Award at the 39th International Emmy Awards in New York – first to receive the award recognizing excellence in television programming outside the United States.
    He also now presents a weekly Dr Subhash Chandra Show, where he shares the lessons learnt by him in his journey with an invited audience and an estimated 230+ million viewers across the country and overseas.

    Born on 30 November 1950, he dropped out of school in 1970 while in 10th grade to join family business of commission agent and trader who procured and supplied rice to Food Corporation of India.

    In the 1980s, he started manufacturing flexible packaging (mainly plastic tubes) for toothpaste, etc. under the name Essel Packaging. He followed up with a leisure park EsselWorld in north Mumbai. In 1992, he launched Zee Television, in collaboration with Li Ka Shing and the first online lottery and first Dish TV in India.

    His TV channels number around 70 in different languagesHe started the Indian Cricket League, a domestic Twenty20 league but failed.In November 2009, he took over management responsibility of the English Daily News & Analysis (DNA) newspaper. The DNA had been launched in 2005 in collaboration with the Dainik Bhaskar group/ Chandra is the founder-Chairman of the Global Foundation for Civilizational Harmony, an interfaith group. He has donated land for Global Vipassana Pagoda at Borivili and contributed to the spread of this meditation method.

    Late last month, Chandra stepped down from the post of director and non-executive chairman of Zee Media.
