MUMBAI: A coming of age film again; Imran Khan is 25 year old and Kareena Kapoor ready to enter her 27th. They say the generation today is fast and matures before teens, Imran, though in mid 20s (in the film) and a veteran of over half a dozen films, is still coming of age. Well, if he is taking his time coming of age, it is fine but an Indian film where the female actor is mature and smarter than the male actor and in full control is a rather dicey theme to attempt; what is more, the hero stays a loser till the very end! Whatever happened to happy endings?

Producer: Hiroo Yash Johar, KaranJohar, Ronnie Screwvala.
Director: Imran Khan, Kareena Kapoor, Boman Irani, Ratna Pathak Shah.

Imran Khan has been sacked from his job by his architecture firm in the US and the sacking happens to coincide with the two day visit of his parents, Boman Irani and Ratna Pathak, from India. The only son of rich parents, Imran Khan has been brought up with their idea of discipline from brushing teeth thrice a day to which colour tie to wear. He can‘t wear socks and underwear unless pressed And one thought film heroes were supposed to be idols! Imran Khan‘s first thought always is what will his parents say/think? and he decides not to tell them about losing his job. Boman Irani plays the kind of father who was never happy with his son winning a silver medal but unhappy about losing out on gold one.

Single, suppressed and jobless, Imran Khan bumps into Kareena Kapoor at a utility store who on her part has just been ditched by her boyfriend she keeps referring to as Sam. Kareena Kapoor is everything that Imran Khan is not; extrovert, fun loving and full of stories about her past affairs. It is Christmas eve and Kareena Kapoor invites Imran Khan to celebrate the evening with her at a shady bar; not quite the hero‘s class but that is what an always tight on money Kareena is used to. A simple beer drinking evening turns into tequila guzzling session, one thing leads to another and both end up in an instant marriage chapel only to come out married to each other. (If it sounds familiar the basic theme is from the 2008 Hollywood film, What Happens In Vegas). The realisation strikes the morning after and both decide to annul the marriage.

However, the circumstances lead Kareena Kapoor to take shelter in Imran Khan‘s pad before she makes a trip to India in a few days. Fondness grows and she convinces Imran also to join her on her trip and yes, he can live at her house and his parents need not know. So what if Mumbai is so huge and crowded, Imran Khan can‘t hide from his parents as he is spotted crossing a road by his mother and it is time to change tracks as over a dinner Imran Khan opens up before his parents and guests breaking the shackles over his life. The story moves back to its original track, Imran Khan and Kareena Kapoor; the former has by now fallen head over heels for Kareena who does not share his feelings and is content telling him about her various past encounters! Her feelings for Imran Khan are purely platonic and that is how it remains as the film ends. The hero remains an eternal loser!

This is a thin and routine storyline with mostly two characters, not equally talented, to carry it through. The funny moments and gags are few and far in between which makes the going very slow, dull at most times. Direction is routine. Musically, only the title song stands out. Dialogues are good at places, but not enough to make it a laugh riot.

Performance-wise, Imran Khan has few expressions to offer coming out bland most of the time. Kareena Kapoor gives one of her better performances and does her part convincingly. Boman Irani and Ratna Pathak Shah are good.

Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu is an insipid watch with poor prospects at the box office.

MUMBAI: UTV Motion Pictures and Dharma Productions are all set to release their joint venture movie, Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu, on 10 February.

The film, starring Imran Khan and Kareena Kapoor, is a light hearted, tragicomedy about a guy in his mid twenties, going through a breakdown in his personal as well as work life.

The leading man will travel to Dubai, New York and the UK as well as 5 to 6 Indian cities after which he will document his journey and upload it on UTV’s and Dharma Productions‘ YouTube accounts to give his fans back home a taste of what it means to live life as a high-profile jet-setting Bollywood star.

Delhi Belly remake in Tamil, Telugu

MUMBAI: After Tamil, Aamir Khan‘s Delhi Belly is to be made in Telugu.

While both the versions would be directed by R Kannan, the Tamil version would star Jayam Ravi and the Telugu version will have Nagarjuna‘s son Naga Chaitanya.

The remake will be shot with a Chennai backdrop and the dialouges will not have any swear words like in the Hindi version.

It may be remembered that Kannan had earlier directed the remake of Jab We Met in Tamil.

Delhi Belly was a verbally explosive comical crime-caper with a smart screenplay and witty dialogue as its aces.

Starring Imran Khan, Poorna Jagannathan, Shenaz Treasuryvala, Vir Das, Kunal Roy Kapoor and Vijay Raaz in pivotal roles, Delhi Belly narrates the story of three friends in Delhi.

  • An average rom-com with limited appeal

An average rom-com with limited appeal

Mumbai : Looking at Mere Brother Ki Dulhan, it becomes obvious that the writer-director Ali Abbas Zafar is a film buff and has acquired most of his story telling from the films he watched.

The theme was earlier made as Devar in mid 1960s with Dharmendra and Deven Verma, where one looks for a match for the other.

Imran Khan has an elder brother, Ali Zafar, aptly called Bhaisaab, living in London. He sets the tone for the story by ending his five-year-old romance, thereafter wanting to settle down and, hence, asking Imran to look for a bride for him; he sort of identifies with his younger brother‘s choice! After a mandatory montage of some hardly tolerable faces as prospective brides, finally it is the bride‘s family who reaches him.

The eligible girl is Katrina Kaif, born and brought up in London, who swings between two personas; a guitar strumming, torn jeans bold girl on the move, she is ready to be domesticated for, as she says, if a girl was still single after 25, tongues would wag. Imran has encountered the bold and wild Katrina earlier and as the families are preparing for the wedding, Imran and Katrina come closer and soon realise they love each other.

So far so good, it is all fun and joy. The pair weighs many ideas to avoid the inevitable wedding between Ali Zafar and Katrina Kaif. While she wants to elope, Imran wants to find an honourable way out. From here on, Mere Brother ki Dulhan becomes one tryingly winding film with many attempted comic scenes and cliché sequences like a bhaang song, dug up from old hits. The wedding changes venues as the bride changes too.

Ali Zafar‘s Patel girlfriend from UK is brought down, his romance for her rekindled and they marry, paving the way for Imran-Katrina romance to flourish and since all preparations are made, they should marry too. One thought this was the happy ending but, no, the director thinks he still has one smart gimmick up his sleeve. Both fathers fight, exchange insults and call off Imran-Katrina‘s marriage, adding a senseless extra sequence and stretching the film further.

With a script that can go in any direction, Mere Brother Ki Dulhan is generally a rehash of most things seen on screen before.

Direction lacks inspiration, the treatment is cliché filled; how does one depict Katrina to be a fun-loving, outgoing bindaas girl? Well, she strums on a guitar, gathers crowds around her and generally keeps waving from a car or scooter like a mobile traffic cop!

Musically the film has two decent numbers in ‘O Malang……‘ and ‘Madhubala…‘ Dialogue is routine. Performance wise, Imran Khan passes muster more because of his role than the acting. Katrina Kaif overdoes her chulbuli fun loving girl and is loud at times. Ali Zafar is good in a brief role. Tara D‘ Souza is not up to the mark, Kanwaljit and Parikshat Shahni are okay.

Mere Brother Ki Dulahn is an average rom-com with a very limited appeal.

  • Delhi Belly sequel titled Disco Fighter

Delhi Belly sequel titled Disco Fighter

MUMBAI: Aamir Khan‘s Disco Fighter avatar that one saw in the last fewminutes of his latest film Delhi Belly in an item number, is soon going to become a complete character in his next home production.

And what‘s more, Aamir will be the fourth hero of this venture. He will play the lead in the film titled Disco Fighter that will be written and directed by Kiran Rao. Khan will share the frame with Imran Khan, Vir Das and Kunaal Roy Kapoor in the sequel.

It is said that Khan had envisaged a sequel when Delhi Belly was in the post-production phase. Khan was always of the opinion that if the film works well, a sequel should definitely be made. The level of success that the controversial film has achieved since it released is said to have prompted a second instalment. However, since he is busy with Dhoom 3, Khan asked his wife to take over the reigns.

The largely English language comedy has had the second biggest opening of the year after Salman Khan‘s Ready.

SET announces launch of daily soap ‘Kulvadhu’ set in Rajasthan

NEW DELHI: Sony Entertainment Television has announced its latest soap Kulvadhu, to be telecast from 25 December.

The soap will air Monday to Thursday at 8:30 pm. The starcast has Daljit Kaur playing Niyati and Imran Khan playing Shaurya. There are other known faces too like Suhashini Muley, Kittu Gidwani and Milind Gunaji, asserts an official release.

The channel is looking to give the serial at least a 300-episode run, obviously hoping to extend that if it comes into the ratings reckonings. But as SET chief creative director Sandiip Sikcand says, “It will go on and there will be changes in the story but the basic theme of the honour of a family not being sullied by a traditional woman will remain the central plot.”

Sikcand added, “The soap is very different and one of the key aspects is the flavour of Jodhpur, the colour of its soil and the land and the people. The main characters would be speaking in the dialect of Jodhpur, even when the two families shift base to Mumbai.”

Kulvadhu is the story of Niyati, a simple girl from a family in Jodhpur. It is about how her destiny gets her caught in a certain set of circumstances and how she handles them.

Niyati and Shaurya are childhood friends and are committed to each other. Gradually, however, the Shaurya’s family shifts to Mumbai and Shaurya much against the wishes of his father, goes to the US for further studies. Meanwhile, the grandmothers of Niyati and Shaurya resolve to get them married, though the rest of the family is not aware of it.

However when Shaurya returns to Mumbai to attend the wedding of a friend and Niyati too arrives there, and that is when she gets to know about Shaurya’s secret however she decides to never reveal the truth to anyone and gets married to Shaurya.

  • Imran Khan on ‘India Questions’ on NDTV

Imran Khan on ‘India Questions’ on NDTV

MUMBAI:Watch Imran Khan on ‘India Questions’, only on NDTV 24X7 on Friday, 17 November, at 9:30 pm.

New Delhi,14 November, 2006 — Watch the charismatic Imran Khan, one of the greatest cricketing all-rounder of all time, in an exclusive interview with Dr Prannoy Roy on NDTV’s highly acclaimed ‘India Questions’ on Friday, 17 November, at 9.30 pm and repeat on Sunday, 19 November at 11 am.

Imran Khan talks about his cricketing career, his best players, his take on the Indian cricket team, the current scenario of international cricket and a lot more…

Imran Khan feels Rahul Dravid would make a good captain of a combined team of players from India and Pakistan. He opts for Rahul Dravid over Inzamam-Ul-Haq as the captain of the hypothetical team, saying that Dravid is a more aggressive player with good leadership qualities. Imran Khan says, “Well I would say Dravid would be the captain, not being diplomatic… he is more of an aggressive captain, he is a bold captain, he leads from the front, Inzamam though I would say is a greater player, but as a captain he is too laid back.”

Talking about the recent doping controversy that had hollowed the careers of Shoaib Akhtar and Mohammad Asif, at least for the time being, Imran Khan says that the timing of the doping tests was bad. When asked whether he thinks it was a conspiracy against these two players, Imran Khan disagrees. “No I don’t think (so), I just think the timing of the test was strange. The day before a vital match suddenly you find that two of your key players are not available. The test results should have come before the team’s selection. Poor Younis Khan… before the first match he was left with minus two fast bowlers and actually without a strike bowler. So I don’t think it was a conspiracy, it was bad timing, whether these guys are guilty or not, we will find out after the enquiry when they had a chance to present (their) case.”

On Indian cricketing standards, Imran Khan is upbeat, “Fielding standards have improved, and running in between wickets has improved. The batsman are playing more strokes than they were playing before because of one-day cricket but the level of fast bowling has gone down. I will only judge a cricketer by his performance in a test match because test cricket is the test of a cricketer. One–day cricket is the sort of cricket you can get away with.”

When asked whether he would have coached Kapil Dev if such a situation arose, Imran Khan has no reservations. “He is a shy boy, he didn’t ask, otherwise I would have.”

Asked who he thought should be the future captain of the Pakistani cricket team, Imran Khan is clear: “Well I think Younis Khan is the natural captain because he has the character, he is selfless. He oozes this selflessness in the field… and then of course he has the other characteristics that a captain must have and that’s guts and courage….”
