Trustworthy hospital networks and insurance incentives can keep quality healthcare affordable: Shashank ND at Ideas of India’ Summit 3.0

Mumbai: Trustworthy hospital networks and insurance incentives can keep quality healthcare affordable in India, said Practo Health Co-Founder Shashank ND at the ‘Ideas of India’ Summit 3.0 in Mumbai today. While putting the health of the nation at the central agenda, he also highlighted the challenges and opportunities in healthcare during the Summit.

“Two things where inflation is high in the UK and the US are healthcare and education. As the country develops, the costs get higher. In India, people go to hospitals which they trust, leading to a monopoly of a few and high costs. To address this, it is essential for a large network of hospitals to establish and showcase trust. Also, most countries have managed to keep healthcare affordable with the help of insurance. The insurance companies can incentivize hospitals that keep their prices low,” said Practo Health co-founder Shashank ND.

A college dropout, Shashank earned success early in life with Practo. Inspiring audiences with his journey during a session on “Online Lifeline: Making Healthcare Accessible,” he shared how lack of accessibility and opaqueness in healthcare led to him coming up with idea of Practo Health.

“It was a time when I asked the doctor for an email instead of a printed prescription for my father’s treatment; he told me his software restricted him from sharing an email. So I made software for him, and he was very happy. And today we have 20k doctors using that,” he said.

He further added, “Everyone wants to live longer and healthier, and that’s what they need. I found healthcare to be very complex and opaque. The patients didn’t know about the prices and treatment, and accessibility to quality healthcare was a big challenge. If someone needed a breast cancer specialist, there were people who could do it, but that access or knowledge on treatments was missing. We focused on connecting these dots. And today we have over two lakh doctors, including their specialties and sub-specialties, on Practo Health, enabling a layman to navigate the complex black box.”

On the future of teleconsultation and online healthcare taking over in-person visits, he stressed a hybrid approach with a focus on treatment outcome, making the patient get better in the long-term.

Actress Tamannaah Bhatia at Ideas of India Summit 3.0: “Bahubali was a game changer for me”

Mumbai: “Bahubali was a game changer for me not only from audience perspective but also from the perspective of being an actor and performer. Bahubali gave me a character for which I could not pick a reference from anywhere,” star Bollywood actress Tamannaah Bhatia, shared her evolution as an actor in the session, “So Many Cinemas” at the ‘Ideas of India’ Summit 3.0.

Appreciating the movie industry in the South, Tamannaah Bhatia, remarked “The South film industry has consistently maintained that they tell more rooted stories and capture the very basic emotions in a much nuanced way”

Sharing a glimpse about herself, Tamannaah said, “I am a realist but I am also a mushy at heart Romantic You get what you are, so I started becoming my idea of true love. I am a very people’s person. I don’t have any problem with people approaching me”

Sharing her views about OTT versus the big cinema, Tamanaah said, “OTT is a shift of medium. It is a great strength. Today you don’t feel restricted if you want to watch a movie”

“Nepotism is in every industry. But if you have talent and if you understand people management in an organization you can make it anywhere,” Tamannah expressed, speaking about nepotism.

Later she added her perspective about feminism, “Feminism is for both genders. It is great when women who don’t have that power are empowered. As individual human beings we are not copy of each other; we are unique. We need not imitate others who are doing something or going a certain way. Settling down is an independent journey. When we talk about feminism, it should not be a necessity for women to choose a partner; she should be free to choose a life partner that she wants to choose. We should break the notion that women need a life partner for settling down.”

Responding to a question on something that she would want to change about herself, Tamanaah said, “I never had any time to prepare. If I had an opportunity to prepare and not always perform, I would have preferred that. I watch my movies a little later so that I can view it more objectively. My family is very brutal reviewing my movies, and I appreciate their honest opinions.”

Key session at Ideas of India Summit 3.0, women achievers gained central focus

Mumbai: In a key session at Ideas of India Summit 3.0, women achievers gained central focus. “Growing up with techno-bureaucrat and mathematician parents, education was ingrained as a priority in my life from the start. My father had a remarkable talent for explaining the physics of everyday occurrences, which instilled in me a deep curiosity and appreciation for the world around me,” said Nandini Harinath, deputy director of Spacecraft Operations Area, ISRO Telemetry Tracking and Command Network, ISRO, sharing her experience of growing up the ranks from Junior Engineer at ISRO to leading major space missions such as Mangalyaan and Chandrayaan-2

On the inaugural day of ABP Network’s flagship event, the ‘Ideas of India’ Summit 3.0, leading women intellectuals and achievers in STEM fields joined together to explore the theme ‘Women in STEM: Working in the Trenches, Reaching for the Stars’, shedding light on how women defy all challenges experienced in the modern-day workforce and their road to success.

Nandini Harinath also shared the importance of family support, teamwork, and personal well-being. “Juggling the demands of family and a career in the space industry has often felt like navigating an obstacle course. However, I firmly believe in the power of teamwork. Throughout my journey, I have learned the importance of seeking support from those around me. No accomplishment is achieved in isolation, and leaning on my family and society for assistance has been crucial during times of need”, she added.

Nandini Harinath has been an indispensable asset to ISRO, with her dedication and expertise in space science. Explaining the future of India’s space exploration efforts, she said, “With the emergence of private players in the sector, the possibilities are endless. I envision India taking a leading role in space travel, not only for scientific advancement but also for the profound impact it could have on shaping our future as a society.”

Discussing her journey and the rise of women scientists at ISRO, Dr Nigar Shaji, Project Director, Aditya L-1 Mission, ISRO, said, “Since school, I have believed in pursuing the uncommon path. My parents, particularly my father, a math graduate turned agricultural specialist, encouraged me. At ISRO, there is no glass ceiling, passion is supported. For women, balancing work, family, and personal life is essential, with health as a priority. As far as the space industry in concern, the Aditya mission is crucial for understanding the sun and space weather, ensuring Earth’s protection. Leading the world in the space industry should be our aim. Visibility for women in STEM is vital; education must be engaging and inclusive from the grassroots.”

Elaborating on the vital role played by women in STEM to break the glass ceiling and drive India’s growth, Prof (Dr) Annapurni Subramaniam, FASc., FNASc., Director, Indian Institute of Astrophysics, said, “It is important to be happy with yourself, as a woman we have multiple roles to play and one cannot bend to all requirements, there has to be a distinction. As such, there is limited conversation about women’s health. It is important to create a framework at home, where support can be asked from the family and traditional roles can be given a pushback. The Indian Institute of Astrophysics observatory in Kodaikanal is celebrating its 125 years, which is capturing the Sun’s data. We have a night-time observatory in Ladakh, 2500 metres above sea level. Our capabilities in astronomy are well established, thus India is being looked at as a support and resource in important missions for ground-based and space-based. India is also a major partner in two important projects in gravitational wave direction- LIGO, and Square Kilometer Array to look at the universe at very early stages.”
