    Not much growth in broadband in July: TRAI

    NEW DELHI: Broadband subscribers grew by a mere 2.87 per cent in the month of July to 70.81 million in the country.

     

    The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) said the number of subscribers at the end of June were 68.83 million.

     

    For the second month in a row, the largest growth was seen in mobile device users (Phones + Dongles) with a growth of 3.56 per cent. The change in wired subscribers was a mere 0.45 per cent and the growth in fixed wireless (Wi-Fi, Wi-Max, Point-to-Point Radio & VSAT) was 1.54 per cent.

     

    The top five broadband service providers constitute 85.12 per cent market share of total broadband subscribers at the end of July. They are BSNL (18.14 million), Bharti (15.61 million), Vodafone (11.23 million), Idea Cellular (9.06 million) and Reliance Communications Group (6.23 million).

     

    The top five Wired Broadband Service providers are BSNL (9.98 million), Bharti (1.40 million), MTNL (1.13 million), Beam Telecom (0.40 million) and YOU Broadband (0.40 million).

     

    The top five Wireless Broadband Service providers are Bharti (14.21 million), Vodafone (11.23 million), Idea Cellular Ltd (9.06 million), BSNL (8.16 million) and Reliance Communications Group (6.12 million).

     

    Wireless subscribers with less than 1MB data usage in a month are not considered as internet/broadband subscribers by Reliance Communication Group and Idea Cellular.

    NEW DELHI: As compared to marginal increases in the previous months, broadband subscribers grew by 5.35 per cent between May and June this year, according to the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI).

     

    The total number of subscribers went up from 65.33 million to 68.83 million in all segments: wired subscribers, mobile device users (phones + dongles) and fixed wireless (wi-fi, wi-max, point-to-point radio and VSAT).

     

    Unlike previous months, the largest change of 6.93 per cent was seen in the mobile segment, while there was a change of 2.51 per cent in the fixed wireless category and only 0.13 per cent in the wired subscribers.

     

    The top five broadband service providers constitute 84.98 per cent market share of total broadband subscribers at the end of June. They are BSNL (18.53 million), Bharti (14.76 million), Vodafone (10.30 million), Idea Cellular (8.78 million) and Reliance Communications Group (6.11 million). TRAI said that the wireless subscribers with less than 1MB data usage in a month are not considered as internet/broadband subscribers by Reliance and Idea.

     

    The top five wired broadband service providers are BSNL (9.98 million), Bharti (1.39 million), MTNL (1.13 million), Beam Telecom (0.40 million) and YOU Broadband (0.39 million).

     

    The top five wireless broadband service providers are Bharti (13.38 million), Vodafone (10.30 million), Idea Cellular (8.78 million), BSNL (8.55 million) and Reliance Communications Group (6.00 Million).

     

    In telecom, private operators hold 89.85 per cent of the wireless subscriber market share whereas the public-sector operators BSNL and MTNL hold only 10.15 per cent market share.

    COAI gets a new core member in Reliance Jio Infocomm

    MUMBAI:  In a new addition to the core members of Cellular Operators’ Association of India (COAI), Mukesh Ambani owned Reliance Jio Infocomm Limited (RJIL) has joined telecom industry body, reported PTI. With this, its core members have risen to seven.

     

    After being at loggerheads regarding spectrum allocation issues, COAI and RJIL have finally put their problems behind and joined hands. This move precedes RJIL’s pan-India rollout of 4G services next year. The company holds pan India broadband wireless access spectrum that can be used for 4G services.

     

    Prior to RJIL joining the association, COAI had six core members — Bharti Airtel, Vodafone India, Idea Cellular, Aircel, Unitech Wireless (now Telewings Communications) and Videocon Communications (now Videocon Telecom).

     

    Talking about the new member, COAI’s director general Rajan S Mathews said, “We are delighted that Reliance Jio Infocomm has joined us in our common endeavour to roll out innovative and affordable mobile broadband services to the citizens of India.”

     

    COAI represents mobile service providers, telecom equipment manufacturers and other communication services and product companies in India. Members of the telecom body jointly have about 68 percent of subscribers and around 71 percent of revenue share in the market.

     

    Besides its core members, it also has 12 associate members. COAI has opened the associate membership to social media companies like Facebook. Other associate members include Alcatel-Lucent India, Cisco Systems India, Ericsson India, IBM India, GTL Infrastructure, Huawei Technologies, Indus Towers, Intel Corporation, Nokia Networks, Qualcomm India and ZTE India.

     

    Corroborating the news, RJIL’s managing director, Sandip Das said, “We are pleased to join the COAI, where along with other operators, we hope to create an operating environment that will help us realise this ambition for all Indians as an industry, in the overall context of our nation’s development.”

     

    In addition to fixed and wireless broadband connectivity, RJIL also plans to provide various digital services in key domains such as education, healthcare, security, financial services, government-citizen interfaces and entertainment. In the past, the company has also entered into agreements with telecom companies including COAI member Bharti Airtel and its mobile tower arm Bharti Infratel.

    MUMBAI: Continuing with its effort to drive Mobile Internet penetration in India, Idea Cellular, one of the largest mobile operators in India, has come up with a new advertisement with a catchy jingle based Anthem, and an unconventional creative.

     

    Breaking the clutter of similar looking ads on Television, Idea’s new TVC shows a choir with people from across the country, singing the anthem – “Hum Nahi Banege Ullu Aaj Se…” – and thanking Idea Mobile Internet! The song is based on humorous lyrics and a hummable tune, and is sung in a celebratory manner for the freedom begotten from mobile internet. The ad shows people getting the light of knowledge from their mobile screens and caution those who try to con unassuming people lacking knowledge.

     

    The ad is based on Idea’s successful ‘No Ullu Banaoing’ campaign which helped the mobile operator build relevance of mobile internet in India and increase trials amongst its users in non-metro locations, leading to data revenue and subscriber growth.

     

    Speaking about the new TVC, Mr. Sashi Shankar, Chief Marketing Officer, Idea Cellular said, “The new Idea ad is in line with our advertising strategy of being simple, creative, and using Music, to deliver the message in an emotionally appealing manner. I am hopeful, that our new ad will stimulate audiences and get them to sing along, and spread the message that Mobile Internet empowers users with knowledge and information.”

     

    The theme is in line with the sentiment of Independence Day, and has been released on Television on Sunday, 10th, August. The campaign will be amplified across various media outlets including TV, Radio, Digital and Social media over the next few weeks.

    NEW DELHI: The leading mobile communications association in India, Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI), has announced the induction of Facebook India Online Services as an associate member.

     

    COAI’s associate membership comprises companies that manufacture or support the functioning, promotion, research development and evolution of mobile communications services. The induction of the Mark Zuckerberg-led company in COAI will help it in getting a bigger platform to interact with the leading mobile operators.

     

    Facebook, public policy director – India and south Asia Ankhi Das said, “Over 85 per cent of the world’s population lives in areas with existing cellular coverage, yet only about 30 per cent of the total population accesses the internet. Affordability and awareness are significant barriers to internet adoption. Facebook believes that overcoming these barriers and connecting people has immense value, from empowering people to exercise their rights to freely express themselves, promoting transparency and democratic values and allowing people to access affordable data services in areas such as health care, education and information, which they otherwise cannot afford.     MUMBAI: The 61st Idea Filmfare Awards 2013 (south) will be held at the Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu (Nehru Indoor Stadium), Chennai on 12 July 2014. It is expected to be an evening where the luminaries of Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam and Kannada cinema come together to celebrate and honour the best in their fields.

    MUMBAI: Adding to the joyous frenzy of the ongoing Indian Premiere League, Idea Cellular has launched the ‘Idea Delhi Daredevils Fan Page’, a mobile destination for Delhi Daredevils fans to access exclusive content related to their favourite T-20 cricket team.

     

    Idea Cellular, in its fourth year of association with GMR Sports owned team Delhi Daredevils, has developed exclusive mobile based content such as wallpaper, ringtones, videos, team anthem, news updates etc. which will be made available for its subscribers, exclusively, through the Idea WAP portal. The service will be available to over 137 million Idea subscribers across the country.

Idea will also make available some content for free download for its subscribers. Regular data charges would apply for these downloads.

    MUMBAI: Idea Cellular subscribers can now boast about unlimited access to music. The telecom service provider has launched Idea musicHUB, an offering that will add on the entertainment quotient of the subscribers.

     

    Idea musicHUB is an application which allows subscribers to download unlimited music to their devices, stream songs as per their preference and also create their own personalised playlists in their preferred language. The application will allow users to download unlimited music through fixed data packages.

     

    musicHUB will be advertisement free and will allow users to share songs via SMS, email and across all social networking platforms. The application is available to all Idea subscribers at nominal fee of Rs 29 for a week, Rs 49 for 15 days and Rs 99 for a month.
