  • Nike emerges as ‘Social Star’ during ICC World Cup: TO THE NEW

Nike emerges as ‘Social Star’ during ICC World Cup: TO THE NEW

MUMBAI: Events like the ongoing Cricket World Cup 2015 are becoming opportunities for brands to leverage the euphoria generated by cricket crazy fans.  A lot of these brands have launched innovative campaigns on social media channels, by spending oodles of money and engaging social users especially the millennials.

Digital analytics company TO THE NEW Digital has come up with an innovative framework that helps brand measure their “Social Impact Index” to gauge the effectiveness of their digital media campaigns. The report also mentions the social media strategies they can use to reinvent and recalibrate their campaigns to ensure a visceral brand connect with their target groups.

The Social Impact Index of Brands has been calculated by plotting a bubble chart of social media mentions and social sentiment score of various campaigns run by 14 brands* across four categories namely FMCG, Consumer Electronics, Auto and Sports. It has considered only B2C brands in its sample study to facilitate a like to like comparison. (*If a brand is running more than one campaign then the consolidated numbers of those campaigns have been considered for the analysis.)

For example, if Pepsico has a total of 33,024 social media mentions and **Net Sentiment of 18 per cent, then the Social Sentiment Score is 59,44,32.

**Net Sentiment = Positive Segment – Negative Segment

-Some of the insights from the framework are as follows:

Nike is a “Social Star” as it enjoys a huge number of social media mentions as well as a high net sentiment in those mentions. It recommends that Nike has everything going in the right direction for its campaign but it can work on further optimising its ROI from social media spends to maintain its status quo of a “Social Star.”

It further says that Star Sports and Pepsico are “Social Question Marks” as they have done fairly well on the social mentions front but their net sentiment is low. The recommendation for these two brands in this category is that they have done well but can invest in online reputation management exercise to converge from Social Question Marks to Social Stars.

A large number of brands like Cadbury, Castrol, Hyundai, Sony, Intel and MRF have been categorized as “Social Laggards” category as they enjoy a high net sentiment. It is recommended that these brands have done well but can invest in online reputation management exercise too, so that they converge from Social Laggards to Social Stars.

Meanwhile a few players like LG, Reebok, Nestle and Dominoz have fizzled out in their social media campaigns and have been put into the category of “Social Duds” as they have low number of social media mentions as well as a low net sentiment.

TO THE NEW CEO Deepak Mittal stated that brands in this category need to invest heavily in improving their outreach in the form of mentions by investing in paid campaigns and also engage in online reputation management exercise to improve their net sentiment. “They can also think about evaluating their campaign further and move to a new positioning for their brand on social media front,” he added.

    Category Scorecard

Evaluation Framework- The Social Impact Index of all the 14 brands were plotted on a X-Y axis Bubble Chart. The average of Social Media Mentions of all the 14 brands has been used as a demarcation for High-Low social media mention score. Similarly the average of Social Media Sentiment of all the 14 brands has been used as a demarcation for High-Low social media sentiment score. Therefore a bubble chart is divided into four quadrants to evaluate the success of the campaigns run by these brands.

  • India produced 36% of global chatter for World Cup week 1: Repucom study

India produced 36% of global chatter for World Cup week 1: Repucom study

MUMBAI: The ongoing ICC Cricket World Cup 2015 is seeing a strong rush of trends on social media platforms. Comparing the social media buzz from both the first weeks’ action of the 2011 and 2015 Cricket World Cups, the growth of India’s online community has made them the dominant force in international social engagement within the sport, states a report released by sports marketing research company Repucom.

According to the report, in the first week of the tournament held in 2011, the top 10 most active nations talking about the Cricket World Cup had produced just under 9,000 (8,930) online interactions. When compared to the same period of this year’s competition, the top 10 most active nations produced over 82 times as much traffic (7,39,050). Besides over 36 per cent of the global chatter was produced by one nation, India.

Speaking about the emerging social media trends, Repucom South Asia senior vice president and India director Joseph Eapen said, “Commercially speaking, India’s official Facebook page generates $16,156 per post of potential media value to their sponsors. This average was taken from a sample of 10 posts during the first seven days during the World Cup.”

Eapen also states that the ICC has been making big efforts in bringing digital platforms to the foreground of this year’s tournament through collaborations with Twitter as well as extending their digital coverage with live scores, in-match clips, exclusive videos and an official app.

According to the report, other teams which have produced the biggest online buzz this year include Pakistan, Australia and the UK. Surprisingly though nations like the US have  also contributed to a good deal of engagement. “In 2011, the US was responsible for 29 per cent of the global online buzz. In 2015, that percentage has dropped to nine per cent, showing the growth in online competition and share of voice,” the report adds.

In its concluding remarks the report says that of all the competing nations, England and South Africa join India as the only teams to rank in both the top five most well followed Facebook and Twitter accounts.

  • Sony goes full-throttle with new IPL campaign for 2015

Sony goes full-throttle with new IPL campaign for 2015

MUMBAI: Even as the country enjoys the ICC Cricket World Cup and its vibrant Mauka campaign, Multi Screen Media’s (MSM) IPL right holder Sony Max has launched its campaign for the flagship tournament. It’s indeed a daring attempt to launch a cricket oriented campaign when every cricket fan in India is either speaking about World Cup or Mauka.

India ka Tyohaar, which implies to festival of India, is Sony’s campaign for IPL 2015. The campaign reverberates around the concept of how IPL is a festival of unity. DDB Mudra orchestrated the campaign and a series of videos were released on both television and social media platforms. It must be noted that last year the campaign was conducted by Havas Media and was called Come on bulava aaya hai.

Among the videos launched so far, Firework has garnered maximum views on YouTube. The humorous video starts with a look alike of Shah Rukh Khan asking price of a cracker and he sees Salman Khan’s look alike and goes and hugs him. Basically IPL is portrayed as festival of unity, which successfully merges many distances and dilutes animosity.

In a span of six days the video managed 60,922 views, which is commendable compared to their last year's videos on YouTube.

The video is likely to get more popularity as the tournament comes closer. The parody was trending on social media for a brief time after its release.

The second video that the channel launched was titled Office. The video starts with an office boy choreographing dance moves to celebrate various glorious moments and the executives follow him. At the time of penning the article, the video has managed 26,448 views.

The third video is called Auto, which shows how India prepares for a festival and people easily agree to compromise. The video is targeted to the crazy youth who unitedly plan for a match and watch it together. The video has garnered 36,209 views so far.

Last year’s campaign Come on bulava aaya hai had four videos shared on the social media platforms of which the Ghost video garnered maximum views with 382,457 hits. The video starts with a priest trying his level best to free a conjured body but the spirit refuses to leave the victim. When the priest is about to give up the IPL siren blows and the spirit comes out to say mera bulava aagaya.

In another video the creative agency targeted the Bengal audience where they show a Bengali wife running away from the wedding ceremony to catch IPL action. This video managed to garner one third of the previous one with only 119,577 in more than a year time.

Humor was very much evident in last year’s campaign too. In one of the video they show a mother is about to expire and wants to share something very important with her son. The paranoid son waits eagerly for his mother’s disclosure and when she starts talking, the siren blows and the son runs away leaving his mother on death bed to catch IPL action. The video has got 93,475 views in more than a year's time.

Considering the circumstances and timeline, the progress made by the campaign so far should be an encouragement to the organizing committee.

When queried about the campaign sources in MSM revealed that a few more teasers will be released in the coming days. “The released videos have done well so far and we will have a few more videos hitting public forum in the coming days,” said the source.

Chatter around India-SA match 30% lower than India/Pak match: MEC report

MUMBAI: Team India so far has been on a winning spree at the ongoing ICC Cricket World Cup 2015. The winning moments on field have also been translated on social media where fans have expressed their excitement on various platforms.

On 22 February when India won against South Africa the chatter around the match was 30 per cent lower than that of the much talked about India vs Pakistan match, according to a report prepared by MEC.

The report states that the hashtag #IndvsSA garnered only 0.2 million mentions as compared to the hashtag #IndvsPak at 0.3 million mentions. Further another hashtag, #cwc15, garnered 0.1 million mentions for both the matches.

Shikhar Dhawan was the most talked about player during the India vs South Africa match, but received almost half the mentions as compared to Virat Kohli during India’s clash against Pakistan.

Sports brand Nike’s “#bleedblue” campaign continued to be the most talked about brand mention, but received only 40 per cent mentions compared to that during India and Pakistan’s match. Official broadcaster Star Sports campaign #Maukamauka gained talk value during India vs South Africa with their new TVCs says the report.

In its concluding remarks the report states that it is clear that no match generates as much excitement and engagement as an India vs Pakistan match.

India Vs Pakistan match creates digital viewership record

MUMBAI: The high voltage ICC Cricket World Cup match between India and Pakistan created global history by recording more than 25 million views on Star’s digital platform Hotstar and Starsports.com. This is the highest ever video views for a single game in any sporting event across the globe in one country.

The number has significantly surpassed online views for any sports event in the world. No other sports event, including the National Football League (NFL) Super Bowl or the Wimbledon, has ever received more than five million unique online views on a single platform on a given day.

Star India COO Sanjay Gupta said, “The opening day of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2015 registered 6.5 million video views and 5.4 million unique visitors across web, mobile and app on our digital platforms. This was over double the prior record high set last year. Next day, the India Pakistan match created history in online sports viewership with 25 million views for the game on two of our digital platforms — hotstar and starports.com. This has set a new record for the highest number of video views on the digital platform ever for a single match of any sport across the globe.”

The prior record highs in video views were set during India – Sri Lanka game on 13 November, 2014 with 3.6 million video views and the IPL Semi-final on 28 May, 2014 with 3.2 million video views.

Hotstar is the newly launched digital platform with compelling content across sports, TV shows and movies in seven languages. With four million downloads in 15 days, the application has witnessed the fastest adoption of any digital service in the world. Hotstar has been built to adapt to Indian conditions and can work on lower bandwidth. It can operate on speeds as low as 64 Kbps, and ideally on speeds of 128 Kbps.

DDB Mudra wins creative mandate for Pepsi IPL 2015

MUMBAI: The creative mandate of Pepsi IPL 2015 has been handed over to DDB Mudra group. Last year the creative responsibility was taken care by Havas Media and the campaign was named ‘Come on Bulawoa Aaya Hai’.

Sources in DDB Mudra also confirmed the development to Indiantelevision.com.

It should be noted that initially IPL was only showcased on Sony Max but since MSM launched its sports channel Sony Six, the flagship tournament started featuring on both the channels.

MSM president Rohit Gupta earlier in a conversation with Indiantelevision.com mentioned that the campaign will be on air by the end of February. He had said, “IPL is our biggest asset and we will promote is as aggressively as possible.”

Cricket World Cup: Over 100 million Indian viewers tune in on opening day

MUMBAI: This year’s biggest sporting spectacle – the ICC Cricket World Cup 2015 – has recorded an impressive opening with 101 million Indian viewers (TAM data CS4+ extrapolated to the universe using a standard conversion factor) tuning in on the first day of tournament that takes place once every four years. The inaugural day saw New Zealand vs Sri Lanka and England versus Australia face off in the opening stages for the Cup.

Approximately 67 per cent of the viewership for the opening day’s game, Australia versus England, came from Hindi plus vernacular feeds with English at 33 per cent. This reflects a shift as compared to the prior edition of the World Cup where English dominated with a 55 per cent share according to the network. The World Cup broadcast was bolstered by new look graphics and multi lingual feed (six languages).

The World Cup buzz renewed the Australia – England rivalry as viewers lined up to watch the co-hosts take on their arch rivals, irrespective of the time zone. The 9 am game delivered 2.5X of the ratings of the recently concluded Tri-Series and over ten times the viewership of any other Australia-England game, including day and night matches, in the last one year claims the network.

With nearly four million households having access to HD, Star Sports aired the games across a network of four HD channels including the newly launched Star Sports HD3, which is an all Hindi HD channel for sports.

The World Cup buzz also dominated social trends online with fans being vocal in their enthusiasm. The opening day witnessed 1,31,000 conversations from 80,000 unique authors delivering one billion impressions (in India) for the two matches.

  • Dish TV fortifies sports packaging for ICC Cricket World Cup

Dish TV fortifies sports packaging for ICC Cricket World Cup

MUMBAI: Cricket fans are currently glued to their television sets as the ICC Cricket World Cup kicked off this past weekend. Service providers such as Airtel Digital TV, Videocon d2h, Tata Sky, Sun Direct and Dish TV too are celebrating the onset of the event.

While Tata Sky and Videocon d2h are pushing their 4K set top boxes, DTH operator Dish TV has decided to fortify its sports packaging to offer a maximum of 12 sports channels during the gala event.

When asked how the DTH platform planned ahead of the World Cup, Dish TV chief operating officer Salil Kapoor says, “We conducted a pan India consumer survey, which revealed that the millennial generation has tremendous interest in sports and that HD is the preferred choice for watching sports. The research also showed an interesting angle that usually in a family its only one person who is interested in sports, the rest are still focused on GEC, movies, music etc.”

Kapoor further says that keeping these insights in mind, the platform re-looked at its packaging. “First we decided to up the HD quotient and added maximum number of HD channels. We now have 39 HD channels. We even fortified our sports packaging, offering maximum sports channels (12) in India,” he informs.

When quizzed about his views on a few DTH platforms focussing on the launch of 4K, which has limited content, Kapoor opines that while 4K is definitively a superior technology, the content for this technology is minimal in India. According to him the sale of DTH HD boxes is directly proportional with the sale of LCD TVs, which constitutes around 65-70 per cent in India, whereas 4K TVs are far too expensive and marginal compared to LCDs.

“It will take some time for this technology to pick up in India and broadcasters to start producing content in 4K. Till then HD will dominate the content market. Understanding this, we introduced 39 HD channels, which are the highest in the country,” he says.

Talking about how the repackaging will help the platform, Kapoor says that they call it a “cricket plus approach,” which highlights something for everyone to enjoy in High Definition.

“The consumer has already taken notice of our enhanced services and the numbers have started ringing in. We will expand our new consumer base significantly. The marketing activities are planned to promote the HD edge that we have as a brand,” he concludes.
