BBC World, BBC’s international news and information channel, has been named as the foremost, TV Channel for Travellers, at the 12th Annual World Travel Awards.

A total of 110,000 travel agents around the world were invited to nominate their favourite TV channel, as part of an awards ceremony that was established “to acknowledge, reward and celebrate the enormous achievements to be found in all sectors of the global travel industry”.

BBC World received the most votes and its director of airtime sales, Jonathan Howlett , collected the award at the Royal Opera House in London last night (Sunday).

Jonathan said: “It’s a great honour to be chosen by the travel industry as the leading channel for those on the move. Through our comprehensive news and business bulletins, and our weekly travel news programme FASTTRACK, we keep global travellers fully briefed on the issues that affect them. It’s great to see that, in return, the industry acknowledges BBC World as a trusted, reliable and balanced source of news and information.”

The award follows the publication in May of the International Air Travellers Survey [IATS], which found that BBC World was the favourite news channel and most trusted international news channel among travellers, who considered it to have greater in-depth analysis than its competitors.

BBC World fastest growing news channel: IATS survey

MUMBAI: The latest International Air Travellers Survey (IATS) Asia -Pacific 2002 reveals that BBC World is the fastest growing international news channel in the region.

The study which measures the viewership of international channels and readership of international publications among international air travellers revealed that BBC World’s viewership has increased from six per cent to 13 per cent, a BBC release says. In contrast CNN’s viewership has dropped from 26.1 per cent to 19.8 per cent and that of CNBC from 10.4 per cent to 6.9 per cent, the release further says.

The IATS survey, which included Japan for the first time, found that BBC World ranked second out of the eight channels among those interviewed in Osaka Airport, the release says.

The survey found that among visitors traveling to Asia from the rest of the world , the gap between those watching BBC World and CNN has narrowed down by more than half. It further discovered that in terms of audience profile BBC World’s monthly viewers are more likely than those of CNN to be frequent travelers who fly first or business class
and are involved in business purchases, says the release.

“Travel has always been an important part of our viewers’ lives and BBC World has reflected that in its schedule with award winning weekend travelogue programmes such as Michael Palin’s Hemingway Adventure, Great Railway Journeys and Benedict’s Allen’s Edge of Blue Heaven all forming part of our ongoing VOYAGER strand. We have combined this with the weekly travel business programme , Fast Track, for business travellers alongside the popular leisure series Holiday,” BBC World , Head of Research and Planning, Jeremy Nye was quoted as saying in the release.

The IATS Asia Pacific 2002 was carried out in June and July 2002 among a sample of 11,615 travelers aged 18 and above departing on scheduled international flights from eight major airports: Bangkok, Hong Kong, Jakarta, Kuala Lumpur, Osaka, Seoul, Singapore and Taipei.

The study measures the viewership of international channels and readership of international publications among international air travelers.

Study says CNN No1 among air travellers

MUMBAI: CNN is the numero uno regional television channel amongst Asia’s international air travelers and the leading news provider for business and top management travelers, reveals the latest research by International Air Travelers Survey (IATS).

The research, conducted by European Data Research (EDR) in eight major Asian airports reveals that CNN has the highest viewing amongst air travelers both at home and while traveling. The survey also highlights that amongst air travelers news programming is the most preferred genre, followed by movies, sport and documentaries. The survey reveals that CNN reaches 44 per cent of business travelers during that period as compared to 28 per cent watching BBC World and 17 per cent watching CNBC.

“CNN has, once again, reinforced its No. 1 position, and continues to lead over all international TV channels and genres. We see the results of IATS as a testimonial from key decision makers that CNN continues to remain the channel of choice, and also, an endorsement of our ability to deliver to up-scale audiences whether at home or while traveling,” Turner International Asia Pacific V-P Duncan Morris has been quoted as saying in an official release.

The survey was carried out in June and July 2002 among travelers aged 18+ departing on international flights from eight major airports in the following cities: Osaka, Bangkok, Hong Kong, Jakarta, Kuala Lumpur, Seoul, Singapore and Taipei. The results are based on a total of 11,615 completed questionnaires, says the release.
