  • Movies continue to dominate TV viewership, ads skewed towards male audience, observes BARC

NEW DELHI / MUMBAI: Although the saas-bahu trend appeared to be taking over the Indian television about two decades ago, viewers have ultimately come back to the medium they love the most – cinema with song, dance and thrills.

It is therefore no surprise that feature films aired on television contribute over 28 per cent to the total television viewership. The appeal of Movies is amplified by the fact that the varying content within films ensure that there is something for everyone – right from animations for kids to youth stories and mythological.

Interestingly, though the movie channels have the largest viewership, general entertainment channels hold 17 per cent of feature film content. However, content availability on GEC channels is mainly driven by regional channels, according to a newsletter by the Broadcast Audience Research Council on ‘Decoding movies on television’.

    Feature films

Feature Films are aired on nine channel genres. The genre which contributes the maximum content for Feature films is, as expected, Movie channels.  This is followed by GEC channels.

    public://1111111111111111_0.jpg

The content availability on GEC channels is mainly driven by regional channels. The scenario is similar in the case of Music genre, where the content availability is driven by regional channels.

On the other hand, regional channels do not have any feature films content on youth and Infotainment. Conversely, HSM channels do not air any feature films on Kids and devotional channels.

    GEC channels dominated by movies

After movie the channel genre, GEC channels have the maximum share of feature film content, as a composition on terms of channel language shows.

    public://222222222222_0.jpg

If one examines the language split within GEC channels, it is clear that the southern region channels drive the content availability. Even within these, Tamil and Telugu language channels have a substantial lead over the others.

Interestingly, the south market is less fragmented that HSM. Over 90 per cent of the viewership is concentrated in only three genres – Movies, GEC and Kids.

The differing viewership in HSM and South can also be explained by content availability.

    public://777777777777777.jpg

Regional channels have higher content available on GEC and music channels. Additionally, unlike HSM which has no content in the kids genre, regional channels havefeature film content on kids genre.

This also reflects in the viewership data, where the South has a higher share for GEC, Kids and music genre as compared to HSM. On a zonal level, eastern and western states see a higher preference for viewership of dubbed content.

Audiences for movies in southern market are spread across movies, GEC and kids genre channels. However, in HSM it is heavily skewed towards movies.

Feature films aimed at the young

As compared to total TV viewership, audience for the feature films is skewed towards young (15 to 30 years) male audiences, especially from lower social grades(NCCS CDE), the BARC study shows.

At an All India level, movie audiences are skewed towards males, the age group of 15 to 30 years and for NCCS C, D/E, as compared to Total TV viewership.

    public://33333333333333_0.jpg

Viewership of feature films is skewed to female only in case of two genres – GEC and devotional.

Thus movie channels have the maximum contribution to viewership of feature films, followed by GEC channels. It is interesting to note that the pattern across genres is in linewith the content availability shown previously, the study says.

The only exceptions are kids genre and youth genre, where the performance is better vis-à-vis the content availability. This could be the result of these being targeted atspecific age-groups among which they have extremely high viewership.

Feature films on kids channels have substantial co-viewership driven by parents (22 to 40 years). Movie themed content is more effective on youth genre channels thanany other genre in attracting audiences from all social grades.

Viewership across genres is in line with content availability across genres.

Holidays lead to greater viewership of movies

Extended weekends with public holidays/festivals generate better viewership than mid-week holidays.

    public://1000000000000.jpg

All the spikes (high viewership points) in 2016 have occurred due to some public holiday.

The biggest peak in the year occurred on Independence Day (15-August) followed by Dussehra (11-October), Ganesh Chaturthi (5-September) and Pongal/Sankranti (15-January).

With the exception of Dussehra, all the other top holidays were either on a Monday or a Friday. This shows that while public holidays lead to a spike in viewership, the ones that fall on a long weekend show a bigger spike.

These spikes are further compounded due to special programming – the airing of a world television premiere or popular movies.

    Advertising skewed towards male audience

Though Movies are skew towards male audience, advertising categories such as Food & Beverages, Personal care/Hygiene perform much better than Durables, Telecom products, etc.

This indicates the perception of male consumers increasing for female oriented advertising categories, the study shows.

  • Most preferred Hindi GEC genres in weeks 1 to 10 of 2017

BENGALURU: What are the most preferred programme genres that audiences like in the Hindi Speaking Market (HSM) – more specifically the programmes aired by Hindi general entertainment channels  (Hindi GEC) in India? This report tries to answer these questions from a limited standpoint. First, to the basis of this report.

To simplify the report, the author has categorised Hindi GEC programmes broadly into the two groups – Drama and others, which have been further grouped intotengenres as below. These are the genres that have been present in the top 5 programmes lists during the first ten weeksof this year:

Drama: (1) Supernatural  (Naagin Season 2 and Naagin) (2) Family Drama (KumkumBhagya, Shakti – AstitvaKeEhsaas Ki, YehRishta Kya Kehlata Hai, SaathNibhaanaSaathiya, AfsarBitiya, Udaan) (3) Super Hero (Baalveer) (4) Stand-up Comedy(The Kapil Sharma Show) (5) Sitcom  (Taarak Mehta KaOoltahChashmah) (6) Historical (Shani, Jodha Akbar).

Others: (7) Awards (8) Reality (Bigg Boss)(9) Cricketand (10) Competition(Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Little Champs)

Awards, Reality, Cricket, Competition are not a part of drama or soaps. The author has included Stand-up Comedy or Talk Shows like The Kapil Sharma show as drama.Shani has been mentioned as mythology Historical, while Jodha Akbar as period Historical in portions of this paper.

This paper is based on statistical analysis of BARC data from the following markets: HSM (U+R), HSM (Rural), HSM (Urban): NCCS All: Prime Time (1800 – 2330 hrs): 2+ Individuals for weeks 1 to 10 of 2016 (Saturday, 30 December 2017 to Friday, 10 March 2017, HSM means Hindi Speaking Market). BARC releases television matrices each week.

This paper must be read with a caveat: It deals only with the players present in BARC’s top 5 lists programmes per week for Hindi GEC. The sums/percentages of other genres/players’/channels of other players as well other channels of players in this paper ratings or Impressions (000s) Sums other than those indicated in BARC’s top 5 lists of programmes have not been considered/mentioned in this paper during the period under consideration and those numbers could be more/higher. Further, Combined Total or Weekly Impressions (CWI) mentioned in this paper means the sum of all the Impressions (000s) Sums for all the weeks under consideration of a network and/or channel and/or programme/s.

What are the genre preferences of the three markets?

Audiences across all the three markets – Hindi GEC (U+R), Hindi GEC (R) and Hindi GEC (U) preferred Supernatural and Family dramas. All seemed to have an affinity for Historical dramas – the rural audiences preferred period history in the form of Jodha Akbar, while the overall Hindi GEC (U+R) and the Hindi GEC (U) audiences preferred mythology History in the form of the Indian deity Shani. Hindi GEC (U+R) and Hindi GEC (R) markets preferred the cricket genre – this was live cricket. Rural markets also showed a preference for Superhero shows, but they did not prefer Stand-up comedy as much as the other genres.

Hindi Urban audiences did not like cricket or competition or superhero shows as much as they did shows from genres such as Family drama, Supernatural, Stand-up Comedy, mythology Historical, Awards, Sitcom’s or reality.

Rerun of programmes such as Naagin season 1 and Jodha Akbar (both are Balaji Telefilms Limited products) on sister FTA channels of the original broadcasters such as Rishtey, Zee Anmol, Star Utsav still attract a lot of eyeballs.

Conspicuous is the absence of any programme from the Crime genre in top Hindi GEC programmes list during the first 10 weeks of 2017. Also, it was only the grand finale of Bigg Boss during the infancy stage of 2017 that brought the Reality genre just once into the top 5 list Hindi GEC (U) space with a rank of 2 in week 5 and Impressions of 6,182 (000s) Sumsduring the first 10 weeks of 2017.

Though a few Competition genre shows are currently being aired, they have not made it to the top 5 lists during the first 10 weeks of 2017, except for Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Little Champs that ranked 3 in week 9 of 2017 with 10,776 (000s) Sums Impressions, which by itself is a fairly high viewership for a single episode of a show.

Of note also is the fact that there were other mythology Historical and Supernatural programmes that were aired in 2017, and still continue on air, but they could not get the traction that shows such as Shani or Naagin have got/were able to get and did not make it to the top 5 programmes list during the first 10 weeks 0f 2017. Cricket programmes that made it to the top five list during the period under consideration were live cricket matches one day internationals and T20 international against England Check out below formore details about audience preferences of Hindi GEC (U+R); Hindi GEC (R) and; Hindi GEC (U) markets.

    public://1111111111.jpg

Supernatural – (NaaginSeason 2 and Naagin on Network 18’s Colors and Rishtey) was the most watched genre during the first ten weeks of 2017 in terms of CWI of 2,01,827(000s) Sumsand a frequency of 18 times that the genre appeared in the top five programmes in the Hindi GEC (U+R) market listsduring the first 10 weeks of 2017.

In a cricket crazy country like India, one day internationals and T-20 internationals matches had a frequency of 5 and a staggering CWI of 69,127, staggering because if one were to extrapolate average the per match impressions – be they one day international or T-20, at least 20percent more people watched each match than they watched a drama in the Hindi GEC (U+R) market.

Taarak Mehta KaOoltahChashmah in week 10 with a rank of 5 represented the single frequency that Sitcom’s had during the period under consideration in this paper.

Hindi GEC Urban (U) genre preferences

Naagin Season 2 was the most watched show in the Hindi GEC Urban space during all the 10 weeks of 2017 with a frequency of 10 and CWI of 76,585. The next best contender for the most watched programme in the same space during the period under consideration was KumkumBhagya also with a frequency of 10 and with CWI of 64,208 (000s) Sums. Shakti – AstitvaKeEhsaas Ki was another show, on Star Plus, that was the third most watched show in Urban Hindi GEC markets with a frequency of 9 and CWI of 57,495 (000s) Sums during the first 10 weeks of 2017. Please refer to the charts below:

    public://33333333333333.jpg

The Kapil Sharma show with a frequency of 7 in the top 5 programmes list brought the Stand-up Comedy genre to third place with CWI of 46,483 (000s) Sums. Urban audiences also seemed to like the mythology Historical genre – Shani on Colors with a frequency of 3 and CWI of 18,824 (000s) Sums.

    Parting shot

Rural India has overtaken urban India in terms of absolute numbers of TV households in India according to a Broadcast Audience Research Council of India (BARC) study. Urban India may have 84 million (8.4 crore) of the total 183 million (18.3 crore) TV households, with a penetration of close to 87 percent. But rural India has overtaken it with 99 million (9.9crore) TV households, even as TV penetration remains 52 percent.

While the quality of content produced by various houses has steadily improved, certain production houses such as Balaji Telefilms Limited seemed to have got the pulse of the viewers’ just right, going by the success of their shows, be they from the Family drama or Supernatural genres.

The Indian Premier League (cricket) is just a few weeks away. Overall, numbers of programmes and consequently channels and networks are likely to drop as past history has shown. It will be a challenge for the programme creators to create riveting and sticky content, if not to draw eyeballs from IPL, then to at least retain a large part of their audience. Indian viewers are definitely in for a treat!

Sony Entertainment TV plans to expand its early prime time to 6pm

MUMBAI: With the launch of its new offering Peshwa Bajirao, Sony Entertainment Television has entered the 7.30 pm time slot. The channel has expanded its prime time to 7.30pm, and plans to expand it further to 6pm time band in coming 12-18 months.

Speaking to Indiantelevision.com, Sony Pictures Network India CEO NP Singh said, “With this show, we begin our prime time to 7.30pm, and soon we will have a show at 7pm time-band. Our objective is to start prime time at 6pm in 12 to 18 months’ time.”

Singh further added, “Sony TV’s weekend shows are running successfully. We are focusing on the growth and reach of viewership of our weekday property and that will happen by launching the new slots on the channel and the launch of new shows on those channels.”

Sony Entertainment Television EVP and business head Danish Khan said, “The intention is to expand the prime time from 6pm to 11.30pm but one thing at a time. 7.30 pm time slot we are opening now, and, hopefully by April, we will open the 7pm time band. The programming philosophy for Sony is novelty, variety and quality. We are working on banking a writing script in advance also we are shooting in advance. Like we are launching Peshwa Bajirao on Monday with 20 episodes in bank that is to drive the quality. Also we are hoping that we will bring some novel concept.”

Firstly, it was Star Plus which opened the early prime time slot and later followed by other Hindi GECs entered the space but most of the channels failed to get the positive ratings in those early prime time specially 6pm and 6.30pm. But 7pm and 7.30pm time band became the prime time for all the channels and the space become more competitive with time.

“There are seven Hindi GEC channels, and India is a huge country with a different set of audience fragmentation. It’s important to have a variety in GECs. In small towns, the prime time starts early, whereas in urban India people watch television slightly late. The overall HSM numbers might not look very big but, in the sub groups of geography, some shows are blockbusters. I think there is huge appetite for early prime time,” informed Khan.

Well, how successfully Sony is able to encash the expanded prime time, only time will tell.
