Akshay Kumar tops advance tax payment in B’wood

MUMBAI: After the deadline for paying the final installment of advance tax for both corporates and individuals expired on 15 March, Akshay Kumar has emerged as Bollywood‘s top advance taxpayer for the sixth consecutive year when he paid Rs 180 million.

Last year Akshay gave a series of hits in films like Special 26, Khiladi 786, Housefull 2, Rowdy Rathore and Oh My God!

Close on the heels of Akshay Kumar was Salman Khan who paid Rs 110 million. The actor had two big releases viz Ek Tha Tiger and Dabangg 2 that totally made more than Rs 2.5 billion at the box office in 2012.

While Shah Rukh Khan paid Rs 105 million, Aamir Khan returned with a seven-fold year-on-year increase by paying Rs 75 million. Shahid Kapoor‘s tax payout remained unchanged at Rs 10 million this year.

About 1.35 million returns were filed between 10 February and 10 March, an increase of more than 15 per cent over the 1.08 million returns filed in the year-ago period.

The total cost of the movie has reportedly been Rs 300 million and since its release on 14 September, the love triangle featuring Ranbir Kapoor, Priyanka Chopra and Ileana D‘Cruz has appealed so much to the moviegoers that it has raked in Rs 1 billion at the box office.

The other Bollywood movies that grossed Rs 1 billion this year are Housefull 2, Rowdy Rathore, Bol Bachchan and Ek Tha Tiger.

Barfi! has been produced by UTV Motion Pictures and after Rowdy Rathore, this is the production house‘s second film to achieve the feat.

  • Jannat 2 collects Rs 240.5 mn in opening weekend

Jannat 2 collects Rs 240.5 mn in opening weekend

MUMBAI: Jannat 2 took a good opening on Friday but the foul words in dialogues and generally indifferent word of mouth failed to better its opening day collections.

The film collected Rs 240.5 million over the weekend. However, the collections have started showing a marked drop on Monday.

The other Friday release, Fatso, remained ordinary at the box office.

Last week’s release, Tezz, has been rejected by audiences, despite the success of lead actor Ajay Devgn’s last film Singham. Looks like it is the Desi action with a cause that works, not the mindless Western kind.

Tezz has been poorer than most films starring a popular hero in the lead. It ended its first week with Rs 147 million, after adding a meagre Rs 29 million in four days.

Vicky Donor continued to do excellent business and collected Rs 117 million in its second week to take its total to Rs 259 million.

Hate Story’s sizzling scenes failed to lure and the film just about managed to stay afloat in second week with a collection of Rs 19 million, taking its total to Rs 130 million.

Housefull 2 contributed a reasonable Rs 47 million in its fourth week. Its total box office collections stood at Rs 1.15 billion.

  • Housefull 2 joins Rs 1 bn club

Housefull 2 joins Rs 1 bn club

MUMBAI: Housefull 2 continues to do very well at the box office, maintaining steady figures in its second week with a net collection of Rs 297 million to take its total to Rs 955 million.

Interestingly, the film has already crossed the Rs 1 billion mark during its third weekend by adding approximately Rs 100 million during the Friday-Sunday period.

Meanwhile, last Friday‘s release Vicky Donor has been appreciated well and despite a weak opening, the positive word of mouth has helped the film tremendously as its Sunday collections showed as much as 90 per cent improvement over its opening Friday figures.

The film has collected Rs 81 million in its first weekend having found much favour with multiplex audience.

Hate Story lured some crowds at single screens thanks to its bare back publicity. But in the absence of appreciation, the weekend collected stood at Rs 58 million, indicating that the film‘s best showing may have come to an end looking s evident from its Monday performance.

Bittoo Boss, a film sans star value as well as content, met a poor fate as it managed to collect Rs 21 million in its first week. Chhodo Kal Ki Baateinalso failed to find audiences.

Agent Vinod collected Rs 1 million in its fourth week, taking its total to Rs 436.5 million.

Kahaani continued to contribute a decent Rs 6 million in its sixth week. The movie has so far collected Rs 590.9 million.

Paan Singh Tomar added Rs 0.8 million in its sixth week, taking its six-week tally to Rs 168.8 million.

  • Housefull 2 collects Rs 720 million in 1st weekend

Housefull 2 collects Rs 720 million in 1st weekend

MUMBAI: Housefull 2 has reported a gross box office collection of Rs 720 million from its opening weekend, according to co-producer Eros International Media Ltd.

The film, co-produced in association with Nadiadwala Grandson Entertainment has grossed Rs 570 million in India (net collection Rs 400 million) and Rs 150 million overseas.

Eros International Media Ltd, senior VP, India theatrical Nandu Ahuja said, “Despite releasing during the IPL cricket frenzy, Housefull 2 has opened well in theatres across India. With its strong weekend performance, we believe the film has also lived up to its name like its predecessor.”

Housefull 2 is the sequel to the 2010 hit Housefull. It features Akshay Kumar, John Abraham, Ritesh Deshmukh, Shreyas Talpade, Asin, Jacqueline Fernandez, Zarine Khan and Shahzan Padamsee. It also features veteran actors like Mithun Chakraborty, Randhir Kapoor, Rishi Kapoor and Boman Irani in supporting roles.

The film released on 6 April across 3000 screens.

Sajid Khan on to his next venture Himmatwala

MUMBAI: The third outing, Housefull 2 having tasted success in its opening weekend by roping in Rs 45 million, Sajid Khan has moved on to start work on Himmatwala.

It’s an irony that the film starring Jeetendra and Sridevi that revived the trend of remaking South hits is itself being remade with Ajay Devgn in the lead. “Would you believe it, I had watched the Jeetendra hit 36 times, when it opened in the 1980s. I was enthralled by that film. I am maintaining the essence of the film, but re-writing it completely,” Khan said.

The film also titled Himmatwala is being produced by Vashu Bhagnani. Prakash Raj has been signed on to play a pivotal part in the remake.

Khan plans to complete Himmatwal before the year comes to a close.

Housefull 2 fills up plexes, nets Rs 455 mn

MUMBAI: Housefull 2 opened handsomely, netting Rs 455 million its its first weekend. The movie ran to near full capacity in multiplexes, peaking on Sunday by adding about 25 per cent more than its opening day collections.

The multi-starrer film maintained a steady business even on Monday.

Bumboo, a nondescript film, fared poorly at the box office.

Meanwhile, Saif Ali Khan‘s Agent Vinod added Rs 67.5 million in its second week, taking its total to Rs 433.5 million. The film stands to lose a major chunk of its investment.

Kahaani continues to hold its own despite new releases. The film collected Rs 45 million in its fourth week, taking its net collections to Rs 569 million.

Paan Singh Tomar has impressed at the turnstile, considering none had confidence to release the film for about three years. When it hit the theatres eventually, it released at very limited screens. The film has collected Rs 6 million in its fourth week, taking its net box office collections to Rs 166.5 million.
