    MUMBAI: What happens when an Indian and a global streaming service get into a social media spat? Hotstar and Netflix on their respective Twitter handles have sparked an entertaining battle over a picture that was posted by Netflix India. The Reed Hastings headed company wanted to wish the House Of Cards star Kevin Spacey in style, and they did, with this picture. 

    Hotstar had created a similar image a while back in order to promote its All India Backchod show collaboration On Air With AIB.

    The reply from Hotstar started a banter between the duo in a series of tweets.

    Netlflix replied back with a GIF from House of Cards saying “Insecurity bores me”.

    To which Hotstar replied,

    We don’t know which of the two had the last laugh! But the twitter jousting sure brought a smile on twitterati’s faces!

    MUMBAI: If you are stuck at office or wondering what to do this weekend when it’s raining cats and dogs, fret not ‘cause Indiantelevision.com has got you covered with some exciting news to make your nights crazy. Director Faruk Kabir, who made his debut with Allah Ke Bandey (2010) has made a comeback into direction with web fiction show Shockers, which depicts six horror stories based on the life of six different individuals. “The web is an exciting space for me and is free of censorship and branding,” says Kabir.

    Targeting 15-40 demography, the show is available for free on Hotstar to give the viewers an adrenaline rush. From a supernatural love story to a philanderer’s gory end, midnight food deliveries to selfies, these stories are not for the weak hearted.

    It features six actors: Dia Mirza, Kalki Koechlin, Rajat Barmecha, Amit Sadh, Prateik Babbar and Amyra Dastur.

    We have several players in the digital eco-system like Viacom18’s Voot, Sony Pictures Networks’ Sony Liv, Star India’s Hotstar, Balaji Telefilm’s soon to roll-out digital platform Alt Digital Media, Netflix, etc producing original content. But Hotstar original is probably the only one to have taken a plunge into the horror genre.

    “India is emerging as a digital consumer. Hotstar is a huge platform with 70+ mn users. Shockers couldn’t get a better platform than this. It did not interfere into anything and that is how a channel should ideally do. The producer and channel need a common match of belief in each other,” he further adds.

    Kabir is of the opinion that so far the players have played it safe by exploring only two genres namely comedy and rom-coms. “The kind of horror we have seen in our TV industry is not what it has to be. There is potential to explore new concepts in this category. Indian film industry, too, has had a very low focus on this genre. So I took it as a challenge to serve the large audiences with my series,” voices the director.

    All the six stories have been explored in the least convoluting manner and follow a simple writing style. Spanning between 10 to 15 minutes, each episode has been shot in different locations using different cameras within just 24 hours of prior planning. The storyline demanded each episode to filmed in different cameras, the directed explains. The captivating music has been given by Ishq Bector while the VFX is done by Doodleart Productions.

    Talking about getting A-list actors on board for the web-series, Kabir strongly believes that the actors need to be fearless and should like to experiment. “The actors were kind to act and understood the reason behind coming together for Shockers. All of them were interested in doing this and we all had fun shooting this series,” he adds.

    The director is already geared up for Shockers season 2 and In the Closet, which will hit on the taboos that exist in our society. He is also working on Stalkers showing true to life incidents. Kabir hasn’t locked in the distribution platform for it yet.

With the creative thought of Life Gives You Tough Choices, the VOD platform’s campaign will offer viewers a variety of options to choose from.

    The complete campaign will be covered in a series of 3 films, 2 of which have already been released – the first, a heart-warming film in a family setting showcases the tough choices that a cute boy has to make in order to get what he wants: a peck on the cheek from his family members that he absolutely detests in exchange for their mobile phones to watch the 14 live streams simultaneously! The second campaign film humorously shows the predicament of a girl who’s struggling with simultaneous appointments she has with the sporting legends at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games as she decides what to watch.

    “Hotstar has emerged as the nation’s first choice for watching large sporting events, and sports aficionados have taken a keen liking for the interactive, data-rich experience that Hotstar offers. The coverage of the Rio 2016 Olympic Games on Hotstar will not only enable the viewers to watch all sporting events live, but also empower them to choose sports and games of their interest,” said a Hotstar spokesperson.

    The app will have 14 Live feeds, whereas the interactive, data-rich video player on the web will present daily coverage running into multiple streams basis the events, access to day-wise listing of events, medals tally and the ability to personalize the experience by allowing the viewer to sort by the country/sport of his choice.

    MUMBAI: Media watchers have been speculating for some time about what Zee Entertainment Enterprises Ltd (ZEEL) would do in the live and linear OTT and VOD space with its dittoTV service. The reason: even as rivals Hotstar, Voot and others such as Hooq, YuppTV seemed to be having strategic direction, dittoTV seemed to be going adrift.

    The riposte came from the Zee management yesterday with its announcement that it would be launching dittoTV with a bouquet of 100 plus channels at a price point of just Rs 20 per month.  As part of the relaunch Zee Digital Convergence Ltd (ZDCL) has re-positioned dittoTV as desh kaTV with a promise to make live television available to every Indian via any device – viz phones, tablet or PC. The price gets even more lip smacking for users subscribing for three months (Rs 50), six months (Rs 90) and annually (Rs 170). 

    The platform has tied up with major Indian broadcasters with the exception of the SunTV group and Star India giving it a portfolio of 100 plus Hindi, English and regional language channels, encompassing general entertainment, sports, movies, news and lifestyle on board.

    “With the new avatar of dittoTV, we aim to change the media landscape to suit the evolving media consumption preferences of consumers. It will allow users to control where they watch television in a way that has not been possible before. We are proud to present a platform that will help scale up this transformation by making it affordable for people across a wide economic spectrum,” opines Zeel MD and CEO Punit Goenka.

    dittoTV business head Archana Anand gives the rational for the competitive and low pricing. Says she: “We really wanted to go mass and affordable with this pricing.  We see it serving as your first and only screen, as your second screen or just your TV on the go! Keeping the Indian landscape in the mind, dittoTV will soon be available in all regional languages. A huge aspirational audience of ours is college students who we believe will use this especially given the Wifi in the colleges. They are the specific TGs that we are chasing. We have found that there is a huge need gap in hostels and we intend to be at youth festivals and various events to make sure that ditto is their one stop entertainment destination.”

    She points out to dittoTV’s adaptive technology which will adjust to a range of internet speeds in order to deliver a seamless viewing experience, making it suitable for both urban and rural markets. A broad marketing campaign – which observers say will include TVCs on the Zee network, Siticable and dishTV – has been drawn out to push the #deshkatv and #beeskaTV to the potential target audience.  

    In a bid to encourage sampling of dittoTV, ZEEL has partnered with Birla group owned telecom provider Idea Cellular. Under this, a promotional offer has been drawn up which allows customers in Idea 3G and 4G provider circles to subscribe to dittoTV free of cost, along with select monthly data packs until 31 July 2016.

    “With the rapid rollout of our 4G services and increased penetration of smartphones in the country, we are providing our customers an array of rich digital services to meet their demand for engaging apps and content,” explains Idea Cellular chief marketing officer Sashi Shankar. “TV being synonymous with entertainment for the Indian masses, we are excited to partner with dittoTV to enable consumers to carry their entertainment wherever they go.”

    Anand adds that dittoTV has sewn up carrier billing deals with almost all the telecom providers. Says she: “It’s not just with Idea. But we are glad to have them on board to bundle dittoTV with their data cards.  We have reached out to a wonderful telecom partner for our distribution. They also see this as valid proposition for them because there is nothing more massy which consumes data than TV. They see it as a good service for their subscribers and in the process getting data consumed. So, there is an increased synergy between the two.”

    dittoTV has also reached out to other service providers within the Essel group – Siti Cable and ITZ Cash – to give it a retail push and make it available to subscribers. 

    Will the low rates of dittoTV spark off a price war in this segment? The jury is out. A media observer states that it is quite possible that rivals such as YuppTV, Airtel’s PocketTV may have to reduce what they charge to consumers.  While YuppTV’s larger offering of 200 plus channels (it also offers SunTV channels) is priced at Rs 99 a month, Airtel’s PocketTV is priced at Rs 45 a month for a bouquet of 150 plus channels.  And then there is the Reliance Jio juggernaut which is set to roll with its much larger channel portfolio JioPlay. The pricing for JioPlay has not yet been revealed but observers expect it to bring about a paradigm shift.

    Anand, on her part, is not letting the competitive noise frazzle her. “Reliance is going to disrupt everything in the broadband ecosystem. So I don’t let that worry me at all,” says she. “We are focused on offering our customer a service that’s good and that’s ditto for television, which means, offering television to them wherever they go.”

    MUMBAI: Living to its campaign tag line #issebadakuchnai, Star India will be pulling out non-stop coverage of the Rio 2016 Olympics games by dedicating eight channels to the blockbuster event on a 24×7 basis. Beginning 5 August 2016, the Brazil Olympics games will be broadcast in two languages, English and Hindi.  

    Apart from the eight channels, Star India will extensively cover the global multisport event on its OTT platform Hotstar. Together Star Sports and Hotstar will broadcast 3000 plus hours of live content from the Olympics offering Indian sports fans every opportunity to catch every medal live.

    Star Sports HD channel cluster (Star Sports HD1, HD2, HD3, HD4) will mirror the SD one (Star Sports 1, 2,3, 4). Star Sports1 and 4 and its corresponding HD feed will have the English language telecast and Star Sports 2 and 3 with the corresponding HD feed will telecast the Hindi coverage. 

    Star Sports CEO Nitin Kukreja said, “Star Sports has been at the forefront of establishing a multi-sport culture in India. While cricket continues to reach new heights, Indian sports fans have already shown their love for kabaddi and football.     Coverage of Olympics has created new digital benchmarks in the past in North America and Europe, and with Hotstar emerging as a primary screen in affluent metro homes in India, the platform is seeking to break new records on the breadth of coverage and viewership. Central to Hotstar’s offering to sports fans will be the rollout of an interactive, data rich Olympic player on the web where users will have the option to switch between the 14 live feeds, have access to day wise listing of events and medals tally, and the ability to personalise the experience by following specific countries and sports disciplines.

    What Hotstar’s high score on IPL-9 means for television

    MUMBAI: It is a generally accepted fact that cricket is a religion in India. This country of 1.2 billion (120 crore) people that is further divided between different communities, states, and languages has one of the few things very much in common – cricket consumption. A case in point for this has been the repeated successful seasons of the Indian Premiere League or IPL. While different cities and its people swear loyalty for different teams, the love for the sport outshines all. Given its mass appeal it’s only natural that television is the most preferred medium to consume the sport. Advertisers and sponsors too bank on this and pour thousands of crores of rupees in sponsorship deals into the league to make the most of the promised eyeballs.

    While this was true even for the league’s 8th leg that aired in parallel on Star India’s over-the-top digital video arm Hotstar for the first time in 2015, there has been a sea change in the digital consumption of the sport in season 9 that just concluded. In a recent statement, Star India has shared some jaw dropping numbers on the overall consumption of the sport on Hotstar.

    According to data aggregated by Star India, “overall followership of IPL crossed the 100 million (10 crore) mark on Hotstar, and its associated properties, over the months of April and May. This was a dramatic increase from the 41 million (4.1 crore) users who watched IPL on Hotstar in 2015.” What’s more, the report shared by Star also cites over 4.5 billion (450 crore) interactions with fans or viewers IPL through Hotstar.

    According to several media reports, earlier in 2015, Star India bid Rs.302.2 crore to win the global Internet and mobile rights for IPL for a three-year period, beating Times Internet and Multi Screen Media (now Sony Pictures Networks). Though not profitable by itself even after doubling its viewership reach, to say that the digital rights to the tournament have been useful to Hotstar is an understatement.

    When asked to comment on these statistics, Hotstar CEO Ajit Mohan shared, “These numbers indicate a big shift in consumer behaviour. Cricket fans have firmly moved beyond just following scores and text commentary on the web to watching video on the mobile and deeply engaging with video services.”

    The dramatic growth in viewership could be attributed to a surge in cricket fans from the top metros and cities where access to mobile broadband on WiFi, 3G and 4G has seen a rapid growth over the last 2 years.

    It is but natural for the industry to wonder if digital is gaining ground and possibly on its way to establishing an upper hand over television as a preferred medium to watch sports. Currently limited to affluent metro youth – cricket fans over the age of 15 in the SEC A, B segments who live in the largest 6 cities in the country – digital , currently led by Hostar, has emerged as a primary screen with more viewers watching the tournament on the OTT platform than on television. “The first 59 matches saw 49 million (4.9 crore) fans on Hotstar while the television reach for the same period and audience was 29 million (2.9 crore),” the statement issued by Hotstar further read. While cord cutting isn’t a new thing in the more mature digital markets of North America and Europe, digital exceeding television reach is an entirely new phenomenon in India, even though for now, it is limited to the more affluent cricket fans.

    When asked if television as a medium has any reason to fear losing its loyal cricket loving viewers to digital platforms, Havas Media Group, India and South Asia CEO and veteran media planner Anita Nayyar reassured that there was a long way to go before one even needs to be concerned. “The statistics show that the significance of digital has gone up, that doesn’t mean the relevance of television as medium will go down. Television’s significance as a medium in our country will stay the way it is during many more years to come for the simple reason that is its reach. Digital as a medium by itself is growing and as we see from the stats that Hotstar is growing in popularity, but that won’t affect television.”

    Nayyar also pointed out that it is important to consider a medium’s reach throughout the country before making assumptions from these numbers. “India is a large country. When we speak of how well digital is doing as opposed to television, we forget that 50 percent of the viewership still is rural, which is not infrastructurally ready for Hotstar or other similar services. Once the entire country is taped up with a proper internet connection, maybe after Reliance Jio comes into the picture, we can think about whether digital will have any impact on television’s pie.”

    “Today, in fact, if anything, online video is complimenting television consumption,” Nayyar added.

    As far as advertisers are concerned, the growing traction for digital consumption of sports is a bit of welcome news, given the targeting of consumers that the medium allows. In fact, Hotstar had a total of seven sponsors – Flipkart, Raymond, Axe Deo, Airtel, Nestle, Amity University and Volini for the season that just went by.

    Commenting on how his company views digital as a destination for advertising Sun Pharma – Consumer Healthcare VP and global head Subodh Marwah said, “With millennial’s accounting for 65 percent of India’s population, digital as a medium is fast growing and the alternate screen penetration is far greater than TV sets. Hence, a digital led strategy was an obvious choice for Volini spray to reach its ‘sports enthusiast’ target audiences. Volini associated with Vivo IPL 2016 as the official pain relief partner on Hotstar. To our advantage Hotstar became the primary screen for this season and crossed 100 million. We are happy with our association with Hotstar for Vivo IPL 2016.”

    But not all advertisers are quick to jump the gun as yet. Some have a long term strategy. As Nayyar puts it, it is important for current advertisers to think screen agnostic. Acknowledging that the figures shared by Star India definitely are humongous enough for advertisers to turn and take notice, as a planner Nayyar pointed out that the entire audio visual picture of the landscape needs to be taken into account. “Planning can’t be done in silo for individual media, one has to do a plan for a communication on television plus digital. Because after a point when wanting to get additional reach on television becomes very expensive, that’s when the presence of online videos gives you that incremental reach at a far efficient cost. Therefore being screen agnostic and planning for both is the way forward,” Nayyar shared.

    Albeit it is too early for digital to go head to head against television, when looking at the broader picture, Hotstar’s growing popularity amongst sports fans would definitely boost prospects for the sporting fraternity in general and place far more significance to the digital rights of each of the tournaments. With several new OTT platforms mushrooming, some specifically eyeing the sports genre, the business around sports in India is to become far more interesting, given the fact that there are new leagues awaiting to be launched within this financial year.
