Hotstar rolls out another exciting TVC for its VIVO IPL 2019 campaign, #KoiYaarNahiFar

MUMBAI: Bringing viewers closer to the action, Hotstar, India’s largest premium video streaming platform, has added another exciting story to the VIVO IPL 2019 campaign, #KoiYaarNahiFar. Conceptualized and created by the DDB Mudra Group, the new TVC features a small-town Indian superhero, played by actor Shashank Arora, inviting his other superhero friends to watch the game with him. Unfortunately, his friends are stuck using their powers for some underwhelming, household work, making it difficult even for the ostensibly powerful local superhero group to come together. Finally, Hotstar connects the superheroes through its first-ever social cricket-watching experience, ensuring that they don’t miss out on the unmatched joy of watching the game with each other.

This entertaining new TVC has been rolled out in three languages, Hindi, Tamil and Telugu, and is also available across Hotstar’s social platforms.

Continuing its tradition of being a game-changer in the space, Hotstar is ensuring VIVO IPL 2019 is an exhilarating affair for all its users. With ‘Koi Yaar Nahi Far’, the streaming giant is bringing people together irrespective of their location giving viewers the opportunity to invite their friends and family to Hotstar, watch the matches, and participate in the Watch ‘N Play game together. Fans can compete and see where they stand against their friends and family through the new social leaderboard.

They can also make their voices heard by chatting about the match or their Watch ‘N Play experience, not only with their friends and family, but also with experts and celebrities. In an interesting product integration, winners of the Watch ‘N Play games can redeem their points courtesy the exclusive partnership with Amazon Pay.

This edition of the VIVO IPL has started off with a bang, with Hotstar garnering 135 million viewers in the first three days of the tournament itself. This figure is 2.2X the reach and 2.2X the watchtime of the first three days of last year’s IPL. Collectively, Hotstar aims to reach 300 million viewers through the course of VIVO IPL 2019.

  • Draft National e-Commerce Policy: Why international OTT platforms need not worry just yet

Draft National e-Commerce Policy: Why international OTT platforms need not worry just yet

MUMBAI: The national e-commerce policy draft appears to have created quite a stir in India's OTT business. In its current form, the proposed policy is bound to pose a regulatory hurdle to international streaming giants, some say. Despite the clear distinction in the dynamics of OTT and e-commerce sector, the policy appears to bring the former under its ambit. That has given rise to speculation over the future of popular OTT platforms like Netflix, Amazon Prime Video and Hotstar.

At the heart of the problem is the way e-commerce has been defined in the ‘Draft National e-Commerce Policy’ by the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT). The draft says, e-commerce is “buying, selling, marketing or distribution of goods, including digital products and services; through electronic network". Notably, it also refers to the FDI policy in e-commerce which restricts platforms with foreign direct investment to “exercise ownership or control over the inventory sold” on it. This poses a threat to Netflix Originals, Amazon Prime Video Originals and Hotstar Specials, argue some.

The situation, however, isn't as dire as it is being made out to be.

Given the obvious dissimilarities between the two services, there is a need to craft a separate policy for OTT platforms, if at all. Content consumption and buying products online doesn't make for a fair comparison.  When it comes to OTT apps, there is no fixed delivery period unlike an e-commerce platform. OTT platforms cannot swap the inventory model of business with an instant delivery model.

While subscription based video-on-demand services carry out transactions, they don’t provide an option for permanent download of digital goods that could be regarded as a replacement of physical goods. Unlike e-commerce companies, OTT apps also don’t connect companies while providing content to subscribers.

Policies of this nature don’t get finalised without struggle in the Indian regulatory system. The authority itself will go through multiple layers of discussions before sending off the final draft. In addition to that, stakeholders also have a fair chance to argue against what they'd like to believe are the flaws in the draft. The upcoming Lok Sabha election will also offer a breather to stakeholders when it comes to any potential forward movement on the bill. Industry sources Indiantelevision.com spoke to claim there is a good chance we may not see a final policy even before 2020.

According to legal experts, the intent of the policy is good for small retailers in the country. But bringing digital services and data storage issues along with e-commerce platforms will cause more ambiguities for the entire digital economy. Moreover, lack of clarity on how the implementation will happen is being highlighted as a major problem of this draft. They have also pointed out the need for open house discussions to address some of these issues.

However, it is certain that if the draft in current form becomes the law of the land, international OTT players will be left with no option than to adopt a marketplace model. That, however, would make little sense, as it would force them to showcase their content on other OTT platforms, as per the definition of what constitutes e-commerce. The micromanagement of ownership and control over content will only harm the industry, which is still at a nascent stage of growth.

While there is a perspective that the proposed policy will help homegrown OTT players, there is also a danger that a less competitive market may lead to fall in quality content. Along with the emergence of homegrown players, the localisation strategy of international OTT players has driven the growth of demand for original conten. Depriving Indian viewers of international shows and original programming may also reduce their enthusiasm for streaming platforms overall.

Commenting on this integration, Swiggy VP marketing Srivats TS said, “Our collaboration with Hotstar aims to satisfy the insatiable love we Indians have for cricket and food. Through this, we hope to build a deeper bond with our cricket crazy fans by offering them an uninterrupted viewing and extremely convenient food ordering experience.”

Swiggy’s food ordering analysis from the cricketing season last year indicated an increase in online orders during the period. Considering the sporting event is all about action, suspense, drama and food, last year, Swiggy saw a 25 percent increase in order numbers during the season, compared to pre-season, with the highest number of orders received on the day of the finale.

This integration with Swiggy is part of Hotsar’s bid to provide viewers with an engaging experience for VIVO IPL 2019. With the motto of ‘Koi Yaar Nahi Far’, Hotstar is rolling out a first-ever social cricket-watching experience which will provide viewers the opportunity to invite, chat and compete with their friends and family. On the back of this, the streaming giant expects to reach over 300 million viewers, about 50 percent more than last year. For Swiggy, which has millions of users itself, this would mean an opportunity to innovatively engage with their existing customers whilst tapping newer ones as well, serving everybody their favourite dishes with absolute ease.

  • Netflix testing Rs 250 mobile-only subscription in India

Netflix testing Rs 250 mobile-only subscription in India

MUMBAI: Giant video-streaming service Netflix is believed to be experimenting with a mobile-only subscription for a select group of users in India. Rs 250 per month is what the streamer is hoping to charge for its mobile-only plan, half of its Rs 500 entry-level subscription price in the country.

According to ET Tech, subscribers can only consume standard definition (SD) content on one mobile or tablet screen at a time. This plan, however, is not part of Netflix’s currently monthly subscriptions that cost users Rs 500-800 depending on the nature of the plans.

“We will be testing different options in select countries where members can watch Netflix on their mobile device for a lower price and subscribe in shorter increments of time. Not everyone will see these options and we may never roll out these specific plans beyond the tests," a Netflix spokesperson said commenting on the development.

Last year, Netflix chief product officer Greg Peters, during earnings call, had said that the company would experiment with their pricing strategy in India in a bid to draw more users to its platforms.

Competing against the likes of Amazon Prime Video, Hotstar, ZEE5 among others, Netflix will remain the most expensive streaming service in India.

Earlier this week, Netflix CEO Reed Hastings had described the Indian OTT market as ‘super competitive’ and ‘exciting’.

"There is also lots happening on Amazon, and on Hotstar, which is now going to be owned by Disney… It's a super competitive, exciting market,” he said.

One of the hallmarks of the Indian market, Hastings highlighted, is the ongoing telecom revolution triggered by Mukesh Ambani’s Reliance Jio. According to him, there is "nothing more impressive in the world than what Reliance Jio has done in the past four years in India" to democratise internet accessibility.

This latest move by Netflix, in a sense, hopes to grab a share of the consumer’s attention and wallet by riding on Jio’s disruptive force.

  • Hotstar releases new TVC for VIVO IPL 2019 campaign ‘#KoiYaarNahiFar’

Hotstar releases new TVC for VIVO IPL 2019 campaign ‘#KoiYaarNahiFar’

MUMBAI: Hotstar has released an entertaining new TVC for its VIVO IPL 2019 campaign, ‘#KoiYaarNahiFar’, conceptualised and created by the DDB Mudra Group.

The film features a stereotypical Indian family whose twins are accidentally jinxed to ‘magnetically repulse’ each other. The family makes several failed attempts to bring the twins together. The VIVO IPL 2019 season adds to their woes when the twins lament the fact that cricket is more fun when watched together, something they sadly can’t. Until Hotstar comes to their rescue with its first-ever social cricket-watching experience, allowing the twins to watch the live matches together on a single platform.

The ad film has been rolled out in three languages, Hindi, Tamil and Telegu, and is also available across Hotstar’s digital platforms. Since its release, the film has garnered over 134,276 views on YouTube alone.

Commenting on the ad campaign, Hotstar spokesperson said, “The joy of watching cricket is multiplied manifold in the company of friends and family, something that’s becoming increasingly difficult to do today. We wanted to introduce something special to protect that ethos, and added the interactive, social layer to enhance the cricket watching experience. The TVC showcases this essence beautifully. We hope it will help our viewers connect to the idea and make them explore all the interesting features we’ve added to Hotstar this year for VIVO IPL 2019.”

Talking about the TVC, DDB Mudra executive creative director Shagun Seda said, “The general belief is that screens divide and disconnect us from our loved ones. That’s not true if you’re watching IPL. It is best enjoyed with family and friends. But there are many things that could keep you away from watching the game along with your loved ones – work, responsibilities, travel, and in this film’s case, magnetic repulsion. It’s always a challenge to create work that stands out in the noise of IPL advertising. True to the brand’s tone of voice, this year’s Hotstar IPL campaign needed to be quirky, irreverent and entertaining. We wanted to create something that’s clutter-breaking. So we decided to start by breaking the laws of physics.”

  • Amazon Prime Video is India’s most-viewed OTT platform in February

Amazon Prime Video is India’s most-viewed OTT platform in February

MUMBAI: Amid a large number of OTT platforms, Amazon Prime Video was the most-viewed one in India for the period between 12 February and 3 March. A survey done by market research and analysis company Velocity MR has revealed the high popularity of the international player, which is leaving no stone unturned to make big fortune in the country.

2,100 participants based in top Indian metro cities including Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Bengaluru, Chennai, Ahmedabad and Pune were surveyed. The findings revealed that more than 70 per cent of respondents claimed to watch Amazon Prime regularly at least once a week while 56 per cent watched Netflix and 50 per cent of them watched Star India-led Hotstar.

According to a report by Inc42, Velocity MR managing director Jasal Shah said Amazon Prime has built its popularity on the back of its partnership with telcos which makes the service cheaper compared to other subscription based video on demand services.

He also added that Netflix’s demand rose due to its originals. As the OTT platform has announced eight more Indian originals, the popularity is not going to fall down anytime soon. On the other hand, Hotstar’s viewership was mainly high on sports content. With IPL starting from 25 March, the viewership of Hotstar is expected to increase more.

Among other OTT platforms, Voot had a viewership of 28 per cent, Eros Now stood with 17 per cent, ALTBalaji with 13 per cent, Viu had 9 per cent, Sun NXT had 7 per cent and TVF had 6 per cent viewership.

  • Deepak Dhar, Nikhil Madhok on Hotstar Specials show, content creation, consumption trends

Deepak Dhar, Nikhil Madhok on Hotstar Specials show, content creation, consumption trends

MUMBAI: Hotstar’s bid to create big, bold and authentic stories and innovate across formats and genres for its much-anticipated Specials landed the streaming service a collaboration with Deepak Dhar’s Banijay Asia and MS Dhoni’s Dhoni Entertainment for its first show. The mini-series, ‘Roar of the Lion’, is a behind-the-scenes look at the incredible comeback story of Chennai Super Kings (CSK) going on to win the 2018 Indian Premier League (IPL) off the back of a two-year ban.

“It’s not just about cricket but the human spirit of fighting back. So it didn’t actually take much time for us to say that we should do this together and then Deepak and team have worked really hard to make this come alive,” says Hotstar EVP and head original content Nikhil Madhok.

Dhar, who was struck by the idea during the last IPL season, believes a comeback story of this nature hasn’t really been told from a sports and entertainment perspective.

“That space itself is a virgin space and something which is very unique to us and if Mahi [MS Dhoni] was to really lead it and tell us himself how he was doing it, there’s a great space for a show there. So that’s where I started putting the jigsaw puzzle and took it across to Nikhil and Gaurav [Banerjee] at Hotstar and then we started together collaboratively building this,” recounts Dhar.

For Dhar, it was the coming together of the right story, right platform and right people to embark on this journey. Hotstar as a brand is widely considered as the home of cricket in India. With over 150 monthly active users, the platform was a natural fit for a show of this nature. Having recognised the power of the story, the streaming service plans to throw its might behind the show making it available in multiple languages. Going forward, there’s a good chance of Star Network’s formidable repertoire being leveraged to maximise the penetration of this show.

In order to ensure reach, every product needs to be marketed and promoted right. While Dhar is the creative force behind the project, does he have a say in how Hotstar presents the show to its consumers?

“I’m not involved, but I do have a bit of a say there. There are specialists and people who know that side of the game better than I do. I understand the content and the creative or the production side of the game so obviously, after a point you’ve got to let go, you’ve got to say everybody is obviously putting their best foot forward. But I do have a say on how this should be put out,” argues Dhar.

Documentaries, as a genre, remains largely untapped in India, often not even seen as a mainstream entertainment medium. While Dhar is a tad nervous ahead of the show streaming, he’s also convinced that Dhoni’s story is bound to become a trendsetter for the genre.

“I think with this show, that’s really bound to change. We’re exploring this in an untold manner, so there is a little nervousness as being one of the creators. But I think it is going to be very fresh, very different from the way you see either a documentary or a scripted series,” the former Endemol Shine India boss points out.

While the story is bound to excite fans of Dhoni and CSK a great deal, the makers also expect a lot of young people to form the core viewing group for the show.

“I think when people will log in, I suspect that they will find it difficult to slot it in a particular genre. Hopefully, they’ll just say that this was a really inspirational tale,” adds Madhok.

While Hotstar and Banjijay could end up joining forces for another show post ‘Roar of the Lion’, the latter is in the midst of developing a diverse range of projects catered for viewing on platforms as part of its joint venture with Dhoni Entertainment.

“This is what all producers and all content creators have been waiting for and it has finally happened with all kinds of content being accepted,” Dhar states.

While the industry has slowly veered towards finite storytelling in the last five to seven years, Dhar says a mini-series would have found no takers a year ago.

“People wouldn’t have even entertained this conversation, but today they are wanting to collaborate on it. So obviously things have really changed, forget in the last five years, in the last 12 to 24 months things have really changed,” he says.

Madhok describes India as a unique market that will continue to witness the growth of both TV and digital. He sees a great deal of innovation in content, with both mediums delivering a fantastic amount of variation.

“Digital is about individual consumption and that also means that you need to cater to much wide array of tastes and that’s what’s driving the whole thrust towards a huge amount finite consumption,” he highlights.

The IPL spot-fixing scandal remains among the biggest and most controversial cricket stories of our times. Given the subject, protagonists and the secrecy around the entire affair, Hotstar and Banijay seem to have a sure shot winner on their hands. In fact, Madhok articulates rather aptly.

“Usually either the ideas tend to be niche or the platforms tend to be niche. For the first time, we are putting together an idea which is massive on a platform which is the country’s biggest. I think the marrying of those two will hopefully produce a fairly dramatic result,” he sums up.

Is a sequel in the offing?

“I think the story has great merit to come back because it has some strong magnets, but obviously we have to get the first one out of the way,” Dhar responds with a smile.
