    HONG KONG: The opening ceremony of Entertainment Expo, Hong Kong this afternoon featured a high-profile cast of officiating guests, including: Paul Chan, Financial Secretary, Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) Government; Gregory So, Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development, HKSAR Government; Margaret Fong, Executive Director, HKTDC; Yang Zheng, Deputy Director-General, TV Drama Department, State Administration of Press, Publication, Radio, Film and Television of TV Drama Department ; Terry Lai, Chairman, HKTDC Entertainment Industry Advisory Committee; and Leon Lai, Hong Kong Entertainment Ambassador. 

    Also in attendance were representatives from the organisers and supporting organisations of the 10 events under the Entertainment Expo umbrella, including three founding events and seven core events. The Entertainment Expo continues through 25 April at venues across the city.

    The three founding events are: the Hong Kong International Film and TV Market (FILMART), the Hong Kong International Film Festival (HKIFF) and the Hong Kong Film Awards Presentation Ceremony (HKFA); while the seven core events are: the Hong Kong–Asia Film Financing Forum (HAF), the Hong Kong Asian-Pop Music Festival (HKAMF), the IFPI Hong Kong Top Sales Music Award, ifva (Incubator for Film & Visual Media in Asia Festival), the Asian VFX and Digital Cinema Summit, the Digital Entertainment Summit and TV World International Forum.

    MUMBAI: CNN has launched a new immersive journalism unit and virtual reality platform within CNN Digital. CNNVR will transport the audience closer than ever before on every device available.

    The global team with footprints in New York, Atlanta, London, Hong Kong, San Francisco, Dubai, Johannesburg, Tokyo, and Beijing, will cover major news events in stunning 360 video, transport users to the front row of global events through VR live streams, and produce weekly virtual reality experiences – starting today with a mesmerizing journey into the running of the bulls in Pamplona, Spain.

    Over the past year, CNN has experimented with VR, producing more than 50 news stories in high-quality 360 video, giving viewers a deeper understanding of the devastation of Aleppo, a front row view of the U.S. Inauguration and a chance to experience the thrill of skydiving – in total, generating more than 30 million views of 360 content on Facebook alone.

  • Viu enters Middle East, to provide buffer-free content

    MUMBAI: Video-on-demand (VOD) service provider Vuclip has launched Viu, a direct to consumer VOD service, in the Middle East. The platform is already available in Indonesia, Malaysia, India, Hong Kong and Singapore.

    In the Middle East, content will be available without charge, while premium content can be viewed without advertisements, after paying a monthly subscription fee. Users across the region now have access to tens of thousands of hours of local, regional and international premium entertainment, built on Vuclip’s patented Dynamic Adaptive Transcoding technology to offer viewers a buffer free viewing experience.

    The platform offers regional, international and local entertainment on-demand content, including Egyptian, Syrian, Khaleeji and Tunisian TV dramas.

    Users can access classic movies and recent blockbusters, as well as curated music videos for over 6,000 songs from artists such as Nicole Saba, Amr Diab, Hassan El Shafei, Nancy Ajram, Ramy Sabrya and Maya Diab. Bollywood content can also be streamed, with films, popular TV shows and music videos featuring stars such as Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan, Katrina Kaif and Deepika Padukone.

    The company recently sealed a deal with Indian content house Shemaroo to add more content to the Viu platform.

    Vuclip regional director for Middle East Sherif Dahan voiced that the expansion will be exciting as they plan to bring new ideas to life and offer viewers a whole new experience in entertainment.

    Biswas new ESPN head – southeast Asia; Cooke expands role

    MUMBAI: ESPN has added to and newly aligned its leadership team in the region to manage its expanding position in the region.

    Joyee Biswas has joined the sports media leader as the new head of Southeast Asia. Biswas will be based in ESPN’s offices in Singapore and report to Mike Morrison, vice president and managing director, ESPN APAC, based in Shanghai.

    Prior to joining ESPN, Biswas was managing director, Asia for Eleven Sports Network. He previously headed up sports content for Singtel TV as well as content acquisition and management for Fox International Channels and ESPN Star Sports.

    Additionally, Kelly Cooke will take on the expanded role of general manager, ESPN North Asia. Based n Hong Kong, Cooke will be responsible for helping manage ESPN’s long-term collaboration with Tencent in China, as well as the growth of partnerships, media distribution, ad sales, digital – focusing on China, Japan, Korea, Taiwan and Hong Kong.

    In addition to Biswas and Cooke, ESPN has made additional personnel moves recently to align with its growing business.

    In support of ESPN’s relationship with Tencent, the company produces and delivers both original and adapted content such as video and coverage of sports including the NBA, global football and more. To provide focused oversight and coordination of that, ESPN has tapped Bowen Dou and Michael Huang to take on important new roles.

    Dou takes on the role of coordinating producer, international production. Based in ESPN’s Bristol, CT, USA headquarters and working closely with teams at both ESPN and Tencent. Dou will lead the coordination of all video production supporting the Tencent relationship, including original Chinese-language video such as “ESPN On Court” NBA content, original studio programming and other video production and adaption.

    Huang takes on the expanded role of deputy editor, ESPN Digital & Print Media. He will work in close coordination with ESPN’s worldwide digital and television editorial teams, leading a team focused on the creation and adaption of sports news and information content for the ESPN section on QQ.com, as well as identifying and telling sports stories originating in China that have resonance in other parts of the world.

    Marc Mallett, will now lead ESPN’s advertising efforts across Asia as the new Director of Sponsorship and Ad Sales, ESPN APAC. Based in Singapore, he will be focused on identifying new sales opportunities and clients, as well as the development of compelling advertising solutions for clients and agencies – like its ongoing TCL campaign – which leverage ESPN’s distinct content creation capability.

    ESPN Australia and New Zealand vice president and general manager Haydn Arndt continues to lead ESPN’s dynamic multiplatform business in Australia and New Zealand, as it sets viewership records on television and has established a digital leadership position.
    ESPN India and South Asia head and vice president Ramesh Kumar continues to manage and grow ESPN’s business in India and the subcontinent, including the Sony ESPN collaboration, as well as leading the ESPNcricinfo business globally.

    Netflix appoints Anthony Zameczkowski as vice president, business development for Asia-Pacific

    MUMBAI: Anthony Zameczkowski has joined Netflix as vice president, business development for Asia-Pacific. A senior executive with more than 17 years’ experience in the media and technology industry, Zameczkowski’s new role at Netflix includes leading and managing strategic partnerships and business development in the region.

     

    Since its global launch in January, Netflix has already concluded partnerships with leading infocomm players in Asia including Singtel and StarHub in Singapore and PCCW Media’s now TV in Hong Kong.

     

    Prior to Netflix, Zameckowski was running the international operations of Victorious, a Kleiner Perkins-backed startup in the mobile video space with a focus on building new business and international partnerships for the US-based digital company.

     

    Before Victorious, Zameczkowski spent eight years at Google/YouTube both in Europe and Asia, where he most recently managed the YouTube Music business across the APAC region based out of Singapore. He was among the first few employees to be part of the video-sharing platform, when it was acquired by Google, and first came to Asia close to five years ago when he was based in Hong Kong in his capacity as Head of Partnerships for Greater China and Southeast Asia. He also worked for six years at Warner Bros. Television as Sales and Business Development Manager, licensing content to broadcasters and VOD platforms in Europe.

     

    “One of the next steps in Netflix globalization is about building and leveraging strategic partnerships in the region that will drive our memberships in Asia-Pacific,” Zameczkowski said.

     

    Zameczkowski is based in Singapore and reports to US-based Bill Holmes, Global Head of Business Development at Netflix.  He holds an MBA from the Kellogg School of Management and The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, as well as a Master’s degree from ESSEC Business School.
