    Weinstein Company files for bankruptcy

    MUMBAI: The Weinstein Company, producer of movies such as Inglorious Bastards and Lion, has filed for bankruptcy. The move, intended to facilitate a buy-out offer from a private equity firm, came months after ex-chairman Harvey Weinstein has been accused of sexual harassment and assault.

    In a press release, the company said it would be releasing all employees from non-disclosure agreements. After spending months looking for a buyer or investor, it has entered into a “stalking horse” agreement with a Lantern Capital affiliate. Lantern affirmed its commitment to “maintaining the company’s assets and employees as a going concern.”

    Harvey Weinstein, once a big name in Hollywood, has been accused of sexual misconduct by more than seven women. According to reports, he used non-disclosure agreements as a secret weapon to silence his accusers. Company termed its latest move as “an important step toward justice for any victims who have been silenced by Harvey Weinstein.”

    “No one should be afraid to speak out or coerced to stay quiet. The company thanks the courageous individuals who have already come forward. Your voices have inspired a movement for change across the country and around the world,” the statement said.

    The studio produced and distributed critically acclaimed hits including The King’s Speech and Silver Linings Playbook and The Artist as well as TV series such as long-running fashion reality competition Project Runway.

    MUMBAI: Hooq is marking its presence as one of the homes of Hollywood original series. The platform announced its first foray into Hollywood originals with Crackle’s The Oath. The series is debuting with all 10 episodes on 8 March 2018 in the US, and it will be fully available on Hooq after 24 hours, from 9 March 2018.

The Oath chooses to tread where most cop dramas don’t, shedding light on corruption and “police gang” culture by examining secret societies that are nearly impossible to join. Only a select few make the cut but, once inside, members will do what they must to protect each other from enemies not only on the outside but also from within.

    MUMBAI: Zee Entertainment Enterprises (ZEEL), a worldwide content company, is breaking new boundaries globally by making a tremendous impact in the U.S. The organisation’s leading Hindi channel, Zee TV, which was the first Hindi channel to be launched in the U.S. in 1998, is now making its presence felt in Hollywood.

    ‘Made In America’ has attracted some of the respected brands such as Lexus, All State Insurance, and Wells Fargo bank as sponsors.

    As of August 2017, Zee TV Americas launched the first English-language South Asian reality show, ‘Made In America.’ The show is entirely produced and filmed in the U.S.A. and marks the first time that a channel of Indian origin is producing content at a global scale for international audience.

    The show centers around six South Asian millennial women who were chosen from a nationwide search in the United States, which drew in over 6,000 applicants. Hosted by Nina Davuluri, the first-ever Indian American woman to be crowned Miss America, the six women are mentored by Nina as they are pushed to their limits for over a period of 10 weeks in various types of training, while competing to win the coveted title of ‘Made In America.’

    Zee TV Americas CEO Sameer Targe states, “We realised that there was a need in the marketplace to reach a younger South Asian audience who have an enormous desire to be in the glamour world.     NEW DELHI: Even though no Indian feature film has been selected for the 70th Festival de Cannes this year, an award-winning historic film biopic on the poignant life story of the last King of Punjab – Maharajah Duleep Singh – also known as The Black Prince — will be screened at a special screening on 20 May after the formal release of its first trailer.

    The film, starring singer, composer and Sufi poet, Satinder Sartaaj in his acting debut, is set for global release on 21 July 2017.

    Sartaaj along with Jason Flemyng (Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, Snatch) will address the media before unveiling the trailer at the India Pavilion.

    This will be followed by a Red Carpet appearance by the stars and the screening of the film at the Festival Palais theatre.

    Produced by Brillstein Entertainment, The Black Prince is a period drama written directed by the Hollywood filmmaker Kavi Raz and filmed widely across the United Kingdom and India.

    It captures the tragic, yet fascinating true story and legacy of Maharaja Duleep Singh providing a visual narrative of one of India’s most noble kings, and his fragile relationship with Queen Victoria, who was the Godmother to his children.

    The film is touted to be the most historical and factually accurate portrayal, covering the phenomenal legacy led and left behind by Maharaja Duleep Singh, right from his early upbringing in the United Kingdom under Queen Victoria, to his ultimate revolt against the British for the freedom of his kingdom.

    Sartaaj is a known Sufi poet and singer. Hooked to the melody emanating from the wandering artistes as a child, his Sufi folk style has been appreciated by the audience in India and across the globe. He has carved a niche and maintains a unique presence in the modern-day music industry. He promises to do the same on the screen in his leading role.

    Portraying the dignified personal struggle of the last King of Punjab, he imbues the role with the same depth and meaning that his fans know him for. He was recently awarded the ‘Best Newcomer’ Award at the London Independent Film Festival and the ‘Best Debut’ Award at the Accolade Global Film Competition held in San Diego, California.

    Sartaaj is joined by Jason Flemyng as Dr Login, the foster parent for the Maharajah, English stage, screen actress Amanda Root (The Iron Lady), who portrays the bold role of Queen Victoria; and veteran actress Shabana Azmi (City of Joy) as Rani Jindan, the exiled King’s mother. The film also features Keith Duffy, David Essex OBE, and Canadian actor Rup Magon in supporting roles.

    MUMBAI: Paytm has announced that its movies segment is aiming to contribute 50% to the opening weekend online collection of leading Hollywood and Bollywood Movies by end 2017. The company will achieve this with extensive marketing partnerships to further increase its adoption and reach.

    Paytm Movies has received an exceptional response with more than Rs. 400 crore in GMV within a year of launch. Contributing more than 20% to the opening weekend collection of all major Hollywood and Bollywood movies, the platform is garnering major traction from Tier II and Tier III cities by upgrading traditional offline ticket booking systems in local theaters to online ticketing. It is also using its widely popular Paytm QR codes to implement easy scan-and-book offline ticketing at their box-office and F&B counters.

    “We are thrilled to have a great start to 2017 by achieving blockbuster sales for key movie releases. Our aim this year is to contribute more than half of opening weekend online collection for all major movies. We will continue working with all move theatre chains to increase online ticket sales by promoting them aggressively amongst our vast user base,” says Paytm vice president Renu Satti.

    Paytm’s online movie ticketing service is available at more than 3500 screens across 550 cities and the platform’s pan-India distribution reach has led to it currently accounting for around 20% share of opening weekend box-office collection for most movies.
