‘Wolf of Wall Street’ avoids NC-17 after sex cuts

MUMBAI: Director Martin Scorsese’s The Wolf Street of Wall Street has garnered an R rating – instead of the dreaded NC-17 – after the filmmaker agreed to trim certain nudity and sex scenes, insiders confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter.

Initially, the Classification and Ratings Administration Board indicated that Wolf of Wall Street, starring Leonardo DiCaprio as disgraced Wall Street broker and hedonistic party boy Jordan Belfort, was destined for the more restrictive rating because of abundant, explicit sex (not to mention drugs).

Scorsese and Paramount, which is distributing the movie in North America, had several exchanges with the ratings board in terms of what was needed to secure an R rating.

After cuts were made, the studio announced it would open Wolf of Wall Street on 25 December. Indications were that the running time had been reduced to two hours and 45 minutes, but the final count is two hours and 59 minutes, including credits (without credits, it is two hours and 53 minutes).

At that length, Wolf of Wall Street has the distinction of being Scorsese’s longest film, beating Casino by a minute.

Julia Roberts presented BAFTA to great friend George Clooney

MUMBAI: It was great moment for the Hollywood fraternity to see two of their best actors — Julia Roberts and George Clooney — come together on stage and appreciate each other.

At the 2013 BAFTA LA Awards on Saturday night, Roberts, who co-starred with Clooney in Ocean’s Eleven presented the 52-year-old with the Stanley Kubrick Award for Excellence in Film.

Reportedly, Julia was in a very jolly mood when she came on stage. She joked: “There are two obvious reasons why I was chosen to do this: one, Brad Pitt was out of town. Two, Matt Damon, he’s in town, but he was unavailable.”

However, the actor took a serious turn to praise Clooney, who has been her co-actor, director and producer too. “All of which he is immeasurably gifted at,” she said.

How could Clooney not have reciprocated? He equally appreciated the Pretty Woman actor. “It has been such a pleasure to watch the woman you have become. It’s very hard for me to be just straight nice because she’ll get me later. But just an amazing mother, an amazing wife and a great, great friend. It’s really an honour to have her here.”

And they had a nice evening even after they stepped down from the stage. They sat next to each other and were seen laughing and chatting.

24 has attracted youngsters to TV: Anil Kapoor

KOLKATA: Whether it’s on the social networking sites like Twitter and Facebook, or applauds from the Hollywood counterparts, Anil Kapoor’s Hindi adaptation of the international TV series, 24 has been received quite well.

Basking in the glory of his debut television production, the actor on Wednesday said that the biggest achievement of the thriller is that it has managed to hook youngsters. “The best thing is that youngsters who never used to watch TV are hooked to it. They have something to watch now. Even men have something to watch on TV besides the family soaps. I have heard that women and kids also like it,” said Anil while addressing reporters.

“Usually my family is divided in opinion when it comes to my ventures. There is groupism in my family, but everybody loves 24,” added the 56-year-old, who was last seen in films like Shootout At Wadala and Race 2.

Directed by Abhinay Deo, 24 airs on Colors on Friday and Saturday. In the show, Anil plays the lead role of Jai Singh Rathod, the chief of an anti-terrorist unit. The show captures 24-hours of Rathod’s life where he struggles to prevent the assassination of a prime ministerial candidate and also save his daughter and wife who have been kidnapped by terrorists.

Anil cleared the air about the show being adapted to the big screen saying he had only the rights to the TV format.

When he was quizzed about not foraying on television earlier, Anil said, “I had been offered to judge reality shows, but I didn’t feel good enough. However, with 24, it felt like my calling. I have never been scared of failure and I thought the maximum that could happen was the show wouldn’t work,” he said.

On a lighter note, he expressed how he wanted the master blaster Sachin Tendulkar, who recently announced his retirement plans from Test cricket, to continue playing cricket for the rest of his life. “I wish he could go on and on for life, but Test cricket is a physical sport, and gradually youngsters have to take over. The demands are tough on the body,” he said.

  • Debutante director Somshukhlla makes her global mark with Sandcastle

Debutante director Somshukhlla makes her global mark with Sandcastle

MUMBAI: Sandcastle, a simple film with a complex message, written and directed by Indian debutante director Shomshukhlla has been nominated at several International Film Festivals including the Tenerife and London International Film Festival and screening in Hollywood LA Femme Fest.

The film is about the journey of a woman in modern India finding her identity. It will be screened at Hollywood’s LA Femme Film Festival at the Regal Stadium 14 La Live, and has been nominated in the Best Foreign Language Feature Film category at the London International Film Festival (LIFF) 2013. The film also had four nominations at the Tenerife International Film Festival 2013 in London on October 12, including nods for Best Feature Film, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actor and Best Cinematography.

Some important and rather poignant messages are conjured up in this bright and beautiful journey of a woman building her life. The ending is settling and although the film has had its share of surreal moments, Sandcastle reads much like a wonderfully crafted manuscript.

“The film addresses the unsatisfied longings of a seemingly comfortable middle-class Indian woman. India is waking up to good stories, with substance, new voices, ideas and perspectives, redefining the lost glory of story-telling. I am lucky that I am getting to be a part of it,” says Somshuklla.

Sandcastle tells the story of Sheila, (Shahana Chatterjee) whose upper middle-class life in India isn’t as perfect as she hoped it would be. Sheila is a home-maker, an aspiring writer and loving mother. From an outsider’s perspective, it would seem like she has the perfect life. Her husband is a wealthy advertising maverick and she is part of the elite middle-class of Indian society. But like the shifting of the sands, is it all slipping through her fingers? How will she build her own dreams? In all that she has, does she really have a voice of her own?

The story of Sandcastle reflects one’s belief in the ability to build a perfect life. But even in perfection there is emptiness and wanting. What is perfect to one person is misery for another. The film focuses on contemporary women in urban India and the changes in society that have moulded these women as an independent and self directing force of nature. Shomshuklla shows two colliding worlds of fateful acceptance and feminine Indian independence and individuality.
