  • TV18’s Avinash Kaul on bringing the local Indian flavour to infotainment genre

TV18’s Avinash Kaul on bringing the local Indian flavour to infotainment genre

MUMBAI: Capturing viewers’ interest with shows on issues of contemporary, local significance like surgical strikes, national elections, Ganesha festivals, marvels and mysteries of India – that’s how History TV 18 aims to stand out in the niche segment of infotainment channels in India.

The channel has traversed the length and breadth of the country to bring season seven of its stand-out show, OMG! Yeh Mera India. Showcasing everything from bizarre foods and strange rituals to unexplained phenomena and rare talents that make this country Incredible India, the show has made a mark on audiences; and the new season is shaping up to be just as fascinating, featuring some more curious and extraordinary true stories from every corner of the nation.

In freewheeling chat with indiantelevision.com’s Shikha Singh A+E Networks | TV18 MD & Network18 CEO Avinash Kaul shared the success story of OMG! Yeh Mera India, cracking the Indian infotainment space, viewers’ tastes, advertiser interest, and more.

On what sets OMG! Yeh Mera India season 7 apart.

The very fact that this is the seventh season, itself narrates its success story. It was a year-long process to shoot OMG! Yeh Mera India. We have travelled across India to curate stories. There is not one state that we have not done a story out of. From a standpoint of a viewer, it is our flagship property which has always delivered good ratings. Over the past five years, 18 crore people have watched this show. The digital impressions are 550 crores, with 84 crore views on digital platforms. These kinds of motivating stories remain on social media all throughout the year. They are regular people who are creating history every day and that is what HistoryTV18 stands for. I believe this is what has made it popular amongst viewers and advertisers.

On how big the audience for factual entertainment in India is.

Till about the NTO came in, HistoryTV18 would reach more than 100 million households. Basically this was the footprint that was available on distribution. As measured by BARC, we have 18 crore people who have watched this show on our channel. It is equivalent to what number one or two Hindi news channels would be. Those are the kind of numbers that factual entertainment typically delivers. Of course, the numbers have suffered after the implementation of NTO. But it also lends to the power of subscription, people would need to pay for watching this kind of content. I believe that is where business models eventually will pivot. While you may find a lot of English entertainment on OTT, you won’t find a lot of factual entertainment content. Hence, there is a bigger audience for India originals.

    On audience preferences evolving.

In today’s time, viewers are exposed to a plethora of content. They have a finite amount of time, and just because 100 channels will be launched does not mean people would spend 100 minutes extra on television. They have a choice of OTT, linear television, social media and more such platforms. As and where our audiences go, we would like to make our content available to them. We are constantly working towards creating India originals and that is what has made us beat our own competition in this space.

On growth in terms of revenue.

The year 2020 has been challenging, in terms of revenue. Businesses across the globe have suffered. Ad-volumes have de-grown massively. Especially during the first and the second quarter, there was a huge drop in volumes. Things have started picking up from the third quarter onwards.

On ad-rates for documentaries of such nature.

For India originals, there are premiums rates associated with all the shows. So, it doesn’t operate at a normal rate because obviously it is produced locally in India. Our sponsors have supported us with that, and this year was no different, we do have a substantially higher premium than usual for India’s originals.

BYJU’S is the title sponsor, HAVELLS is the co-presenting sponsor and LIC is the associate sponsor. Advertisersare always very keen to associate with the positive narrative that we as a channel are bringing to the table.

    On competition in this space.

We compete in a genre where there are quite a few players, we don’t necessarily have survival content in our programming. Our emphasis has always been strategically on India content and we are continuously doing India-based content for the last seven years. Unfortunately, our competitors who have been in the country for more than 30 years haven’t really concentrated on local India production. It would be great having such shows across competition as proper franchises.

On plans to licence OMG! Yeh Mera India and other originals to OTTs.

So, far we have been conscious enough to put it out on our own platforms and work with that but going forward we are fairly open to the idea of licensing our shows on other platforms. The challenge is that on streaming platforms the focus is not yet on factual content, it is still on crime, thriller, horror or something which is bold in nature. OTT in India is still in infancy. But if we see international platforms in developed countries, there is a deeper wave of engagement where people look out for this kind of content. I believe in the next few years we will see the maturity of that industry coming in. With the new regulations also in place, we will see more of factual entertainment content as well on OTT. It would be a very welcome move.

  • ‘OMG! Yeh Mera India’ returns to HistoryTV18 with season 7

‘OMG! Yeh Mera India’ returns to HistoryTV18 with season 7

MUMBAI: This Holi, viewers of HistoryTV18 are in for a colourful treat. India’s longest-running hit factual entertainment series, OMG! Yeh Mera India marks its return to TV screens with a vibrant new season starting Monday, 29 March at 8 pm.

In its fifth year and seventh season, the series has gone from strength to strength, reaching millions of viewers on television and digital platforms. Its biggest win, though, lies in its impact beyond the screen and on the lives of people featured in various episodes. Not only have they been widely recognised and celebrated for their talent or record-setting feats, but some have also been honoured with the prestigious Padma Awards, including Pankajakshi Amma and Meenakshi Amma from Kerala and Teejan Bai from Chhattisgarh.  Some stories from the series have even inspired cinematic works by filmmakers. Stories such as those of conservationist Dr Prakash Amte or octogenarian sharp-shooter Chandro Tomar have become the subject of popular films. On social media, stories from the show have been viewed, liked, loved, and shared by millions, including actors, sports stars, public figures, influencers, and thought leaders.

OMG! Yeh Mera India S7 builds on the wonder and magic of earlier seasons, celebrating an India where ordinary people make history every day, doing extraordinary things. The new season of the show serves up fascinating curiosities, exceptional talent, and modern-day wonders, with a dash of the strange and unusual. Season seven also presents inspiring stories about individuals and their creations driven by a mission to make a positive impact on lives and the world at large. For instance, viewers will be able to see a unique energy-saving ‘solar boat’ and also find out how a ‘nano jeep’ could prove life-changing for people with special needs. This season also features an impressive range of stories, people and places bound within the show’s original promise – to showcase and celebrate India in all its vitality, ingenuity, and diversity. Now, perhaps more than ever, as India emerges from a global crisis, the likes of which has not been encountered in over a century, there is a need to shine the light on the great and the good. To move forward with renewed optimism. For no matter the odds, we are made of sterner stuff. It’s a time to celebrate the triumphant human spirit. A spirit that is evident in India every day, defining our resilience as a nation. To borrow from the show’s fun title track: “ye desh ajab hai, yahaan log gazab hain!” Famous playback singer Benny Dayal has lent his voice to OMG! Yeh Mera India’s new, foot-tapping title song.

As each season breaks fresh ground and sets new benchmarks, the one constant has been actor and TV presenter Krushna Abhishek as the show’s host. With the seventh season of OMG! Yeh Mera India premiering on HistoryTV18 on 29  March, an excited Krushna shares, “A new season of OMG is like returning home for me! I feel thrilled and blessed that I’ve been a part of this hugely successful series. I’m constantly amazed by our incredible country and the amazing talent its people possess. I can tell you that season seven will entertain you like never before!”

Network18 A+E Networks | TV18 MD broadcast CEO Avinash Kaul expects the show will continue to set new standards and build a loyal fan base. He says, “When we launched OMG! Yeh Mera India, we were sure it would be an instant hit. Not only is it extremely well-produced and compelling content, but it also showcases the most fascinating and often untold, unseen stories from across the country. People have told me that just watching the show makes them feel proud of being Indian. Season after season, the show has performed beyond our expectations. This season, production continued through the turmoil of the pandemic, and I’m confident that it will win over audiences. I would like to thank the entire team and the viewers for making the franchise such an incredible success story.”

Watch how the Indian Army keeps threats at bay, round the clock, in HistoryTV18’s gripping new documentary

From the burning sands of Rajasthan to the freezing glaciers of Siachen, the boundaries of India stretch over some of the most extreme terrains on the planet. Regular ceasefire violations and infiltration attempts from across the border mean that protecting the world’s seventh-largest country, from remote outposts to thriving urban centres, is incredibly daunting. But the men and women of the Indian Army are up to the task. With special access to military personnel and systems, HistoryTV18 brings you glimpses of an action-packed 24 hours with the defenders of India. ‘Indian Army 24 Hours’ premiering on the 18th of November at 9 PM, follows a 24-hour clock, tracking teams, tactics and technology at work. This superbly researched and narrated one-hour film encapsulates what it takes for one of the largest armies in the world to stay vigilant and battle-ready every minute of every day. Featuring power-packed real-life action sequences and dramatic recreations of battle-scenarios, the show takes viewers into the thick of military operations. It presents little-known historical facts about the Indian Army, spotlights some of its greatest battle honours and sheds light on the functioning of various units, intercut with interviews of dynamic young officers of the Indian Army.

The spectacular one-hour special also reveals some of the operational challenges specific to the various arms of the Indian Army, including the Armoured Corps, Engineers, the Signals Corps, Army Aviation, and the elite Special Forces. HistoryTV18’s ace camera crew takes viewers as close to the explosive action as possible, for an authentic experience of the Indian Army’s relentless efforts, efficiency and preparedness in extreme conditions. From the hallowed ground of the prestigious Indian Military Academy to the icy heights of the Siachen glacier; from inside a Bofors artillery unit to a chopper carrying fearless Ghatak commandos, and much more.

The film’s 24-hour clock starts a little after midnight with a border patrol near the LoC and then a daring commando-raid behind enemy lines. The tense, suspenseful opening follows a squad of elite Paratrooper Special Forces as they neutralize two high-value terrorist targets. As dawn breaks, the narrative transitions to vignettes of the various arms of the Indian Army, filmed in all their realism, with live explosions and gunfire. As the day in the film progresses, the audience becomes privy to high-tech intelligence gathering and comms, with the men and women of the Signals Corps. There are eyes in the sky and boots on the ground as drones take flight and stealthy teams move undetected on foot. We also see how the Indian Army’s Engineers keep men and material moving, no matter the obstacle. Tracks are laid over desert terrain, minefields are cleared, and a battle tank with engine trouble is rescued, while in range of enemy fire. Elsewhere, a spectacle of awesome firepower unfolds with a tank column firing on-the-go, while raw courage is on display as an infantry detachment charges into the mouth of battle, guns blazing and khukris unsheathed, in another remarkable recreation.

‘Indian Army 24 Hours’, premiering on the 18th of November at 9 PM on HistoryTV18, also takes viewers behind the guns and glory, to see the gutsy, unseen heroes at work. Their courage and dedication shine through, however dire or dangerous the situation. From the soldiers who deliver meals to brothers-in-arms at forward posts and the logistics warriors who keep storage depots stocked; to daring pilots who save lives with emergency evacuation and field medics and doctors, who hold fast to the motto, Sarve Santu Nirmaya, the film celebrates all heroes in uniform.

The film’s finish packs a punch. As night falls, the story comes full circle with a commando team using the cover of darkness to infiltrate enemy lines. Cameras follow as the special forces’ operatives are air-dropped on the edge of the enemy-controlled territory, in the dead of night. Their mission – to blow up an ammunition dump.

Avinash Kaul, Managing Director A+E Networks | TV18 and CEO-Broadcast for Network18, said, “Indian Army 24 Hours is a must-watch for anyone curious about or fascinated by the Indian Army. This film is the story of the soldiers of our army and showcases their bravery, effectiveness and unwavering commitment to the defence of our nation and way of life. HistoryTV18 is honoured to have made this film with the support of the Indian Army. We hope that the film inspires in our audience the same sense of pride and admiration for our true heroes that we felt in making it.”

  • HistoryTV18 investigates the world’s most inexplicable mysteries on ‘The UnXplained with William Shatner’

HistoryTV18 investigates the world’s most inexplicable mysteries on ‘The UnXplained with William Shatner’

MUMBAI :Have you heard of birds that predict disasters days before they take place, or sinister cults that manipulate hundreds of people to willingly take their own lives? Can science explain why some areas just seem strangely evil, and is there any truth behind ancient stories of unearthly creatures like vampires and werewolves? Why does rain sometimes fall from the sky like blood, and how do some rocks and stones inspire people to worship them?

HistoryTV18’s latest premiere, ‘The UnXplained with William Shatner’, premiering on the 5th of October at 6 PM, explores these and other equally fascinating questions that have stumped humankind for centuries. The series is presented by award-winning actor and science fiction icon, William Shatner, and features compelling contributions from scientists, historians, and witnesses seeking to shed light on how the seemingly impossible can occur. With hour-long thematic episodes airing every Monday and Tuesday evening at 6, it is an exploration of the most fascinating, strange, and inexplicable mysteries in the world.

The series delves into strange happenings involving curious weather phenomena, bizarre cults, “evil” locations, and dire prophecies, among others. However, instead of merely giving definitive solutions, experts and historians share their opinions, and present various well-researched theories, allowing viewers to discern the answers. The narrative stays rooted in reality, making no fantastical claims, while acknowledging that there is still much remaining for humans to discover.

One of the episodes on ‘The UnXplained with William Shatner’, premiering on the 5th of October at 6 PM, tries to get into the minds of people who have been masters of manipulation. Exploring the intoxicating charisma of cult leaders, the episode investigates what makes thousands of followers give up power to them. Along with using archival footage and photographs of famous human sacrifices and indoctrination, the show even takes viewers to the actual sites where these mysterious events took place decades ago. Another episode tries to unravel the mysteries of how, and why, certain incredible structures, like the Great Pyramid at Giza and the intricate spiral staircase at the Loretto Chapel, remain standing without any central support. While we like to think of ourselves as the peak of evolution, the show also poses the pertinent question, what if we are wrong. An episode also examines the extraordinary powers that allow a dog to detect cancer faster than doctors with sophisticated equipment, and a horse that can read a person’s mind. Some of the other fascinating stories featured in one or the other episode of the series include a priceless gemstone with a deadly curse, a sacred chunk of sandstone that has caused wars, ancient rituals like voodoo and exorcism, and remarkable tales of human survival.

After having explored the depths of space as Captain Kirk in the legendary science fiction series, Star Trek, William Shatner is now captaining the search for answers to these real-world mysteries. As presenter and executive producer of ‘The UnXplained with William Shatner’, premiering on the 5th of October at 6 PM on HistoryTV18, he too is thrilled about being part of this fascinating series.

MUMBAI: HistoryTV18 is adding to its India offering with the new original production, ‘Meenakshi Amman & The Marvel Of Madurai,’ premiering on May 4th, Monday 8 PM. As the world faces an unprecedented challenge, and the government rules out public celebrations, HistoryTV18 brings viewers an immersive experience of the Chithirai festival and the famed Meenakshi Temple, at home on television screens. The one-hour programme premieres on the auspicious day of Thirukalyanam.

Filmed in 2019, the documentary celebrates the legend of Meenakshi Amman, Mother Goddess, queen, and patron deity of the ancient city of Madurai. The film showcases the first two weeks of the grand celebrations in Tamil Nadu’s second-largest city, taking viewers behind the scenes of key events, along with their back-stories and socio-cultural significance. With a staggering 33,000 intricate sculptures, painted ceilings, mandapams, shrines, and fourteen towering gopurams, embellished with thousands of mythological characters and fantastical creatures, the temple is a feat of artistic genius and geometric precision. The storytelling, with stunning visuals and slickly-edited sequences, shines the light on South India’s indigenous craftsmanship, engineering, and cultural richness.

The original production, a year in the making, captures the pomp and ceremony of some of the most important days of the Chithirai festival – from ‘pattabhishekham’ the coronation of the goddess,  to ‘thirukalyanam’ the divine wedding, and ‘rathotsavam’ the chariot or car festival.

  • HistoryTV18 showcases the largest human gathering on earth, in a spectacular new original,‘Kumbh: Among the Seekers’

HistoryTV18 showcases the largest human gathering on earth, in a spectacular new original,‘Kumbh: Among the Seekers’

MUMBAI: Adding to its rich offering of Indian originals, HistoryTV18 presents a one-hour special about the world’s most spectacular human gathering, the Kumbh Mela. The incredible festival is widely known to be the largest peaceful gathering on the planet. According to official estimates, a staggering 240 million people converged on Prayagraj, formerly the city of Allahabad, over two months. That’s more than three times the number of people that came to New York, the world’s most visited city in 2019, over the entire year! The documentary takes viewers among the believers and behind the scenes of the Kumbh Mela, to find human stories, present jaw-dropping facts, and take a closer look at the gargantuan logistics of the world-famous mega-event. While decoding its present-day avatar, the multi-dimensional narrative also traces the known history and enduring folklore of the centuries-old fair.

The original production, almost a year in the making, captures the breathtaking spectacle of the Kumbh – from build-up, through key phases, to the final day of the seven-week long Mela. Filming by day and night in high definition and 4K, high-speed cameras follow the action, bringing iconic images, unseen perspectives, and revealing details to the screen. The flood plains of Prayagraj and the banks of the confluence of the Ganga, Yamuna, and mythical Saraswati rivers, form the stage upon which the drama unfolds. Scenes of festivity, processions, and thousands of ascetics charging into frigid waters for the holy baths of the Shahi Snaan, are some of the highlights. The changing seasons, myriad moods, vivid colours, and sheer scale, make for a compelling visual feast. The myriad challenges of managing crowds, providing security, and organising basics like food and accommodation, get their due place in the documentary. Viewers will get a sense of what it takes to pull off history’s biggest religious event. Candid moments and the spectrum of emotions — from anxiety and despair, to hope and joy — play out at the Khoya-Paya (Lost & Found) Centres, in a heart-warming sequence. Historical archive footage and graphical representations further enrich the factual storytelling. Naga Sadhus, wearing only ash and dreadlocks, akhaaras, pilgrims, foreign visitors, VVIPs, organisers, mounted-police, officials, cooks, volunteers each with a purpose or on a quest, present the many faces of the Kumbh. In this churning sea of humanity, the narrative zeroes into quiet moments, to tell intimate stories of individuals and what the Kumbh means to them. The varied cast of characters includes a Bollywood cinematographer, a member of the third-gender Kinnar Akhaara, a Sadhvi of American extraction, an artist, and the head of the control and command centre. Along with top-end production values, never-before-seen footage, research, and catchy stats, the film also benefits from the insights of an erudite panel of experts. The cultural historians and authors featured in the film, shine a light on the fascinating nuances, ideas and belief system that are at the heart of the Kumbh Mela — a shared human experience like no other.

HistoryTV18 aims to tell stories of India that engage, inform, and entertain.

‘Kumbh: Among the Seekers’ premiering on January 29th, 9 PM is the latest in a set of dramatic documentaries about India’s rich cultural history and the elemental human quest to find answers to life’s enduring mysteries.

Pilgrims, visitors, and curious seekers come to Kumbh looking for spirituality, spectacle, or salvation. They come from India and across the globe. The Ardh Kumbh of 2019, held at the Triveni Sangam at Prayagraj, was the largest religious congregation, ever. Its central message remains spiritual and its appeal universal. In ‘Kumbh: Among the Seekers,’ viewers will meet devotees from far away shores, seeking to transcend the material and connect with something intangible and meaningful. Some come to find themselves, some to escape, and some to renounce the material world. The thirteen Akhaaras or Hindu monastic orders are spotlighted, as they arrive in Prayagraj. The wandering mystics of India, the Naga Sadhus, are the rock-stars of the Kumbh Mela. The film captures the exalted status of those who have renounced the world. In time-honoured tradition, these Digambar or skyclad, who own nothing, are seen leading the faithful in the holy Shahi Snaan. Just as the waters of sacred rivers merge at the confluence, a multitude of ideas, influences, cultures, and languages mix in the great melting pot that is the Kumbh. Everyone is welcome here.

Taking viewers back to the weeks preceding the Mela, ‘Kumbh: Among the Seekers’ shines a light on the challenges and scale of operations. The event entailed building the largest temporary city in the world, spread over 32 km. As many as 130 Million pilgrims camped here. The Mela area had 300 KM of roads and 22 pontoon bridges built in record time. There were also thousands of make-shift kitchens serving daily bhandaras, CCTV cameras, wireless networks, supervised lost and found centres, 3,500 megaphones, and fifty-thousand security personnel. It was unprecedented in scale and cost over 4,000 Crores. HistoryTV18 tells the fascinating story of Kolkata’s grand temple and its patron Goddess in ‘Dakshineswar: Legends of Kali’

MUMBAI: HistoryTV18 presents an hour-long documentary about the fearsome, mysterious yet benevolent Goddess Kali, Her devotees, festival and great temple. According to Hindu tradition, the warrior Goddess is the personification of Shakti, the feminine divine, at its most powerful. She is all-conquering and Her wrath all-consuming. But when She is calm, then like nature She is maternal – nur-turing and protective. When most of India shines in celebration of Diwali, it is Goddess Kali who holds centre-stage in Eastern India. Kali Puja is special in Kolkata, and of its many temples, none is grander than the Dakshineswar Kali Temple. Ever since it was completed and opened to the public in the mid-nineteenth century, it has been a melting pot of diverse ideologies. Dakshineswar Kali Temple remains iconic, and millions still throng here. The narrative also encompasses the fascinating stories of promi-nent historical figures. Rani Rashmani, the temple’s visionary builder, is key to the story. So is Sri Ram-krishna Parmhans, the temple’s head priest. Today, he is revered as a saint mystic, whose pluralist ideas were a life-changing influence for Swami Vivekananda. The film is rich in facts and provides insights into mythology, its powerful symbolism and present-day relevance, especially about the representation and position of women in Indian society. ‘Dakshineswar: Legends of Kali’ premieres on Friday, 25th October at 8 PM

Research, top-end production values and never-seen-before visuals, make the film a cut above the rest. Stylised animation and imagery recreate the legends and forms of Kali, from bloodthirsty demon-slayer and Goddess of Tantrics, to the beloved and divine mother of tens of millions of devotees. Indeed it is Kali’s devotees and their human stories that make the film moving and immersive. Devotees like Amruta, for whom Ma Kali makes up for the loss of her own mother. The inherent egalitarianism and inclusiveness of Goddess worship in Kolkata also finds expression in the film. Viewers are introduced to Rajib-ul-Huq, a devotee of Kali, who sees no contradiction in revering the Hindu Goddess and being Muslim. The cosmopolitan character of West Bengal’s capital city shines through in scenes of Kolkata’s China Town. Here the centuries-old Chinese community have their own Kali Temple, where devotees receive prasad of momos and noodles. The story also takes the audience to mysterious Tarapith, an important centre of Kali worship, to see Gauri, a woman tantric in the little-understood world of Tantra.

In keeping with the enigma that is Goddess Kali, the festival of Kali Puja is also a joyous fusion of tradi-tion, modernity and inclusiveness. ‘Dakshineswar: Legends of Kali’ features Kolkata-based music band, Project Maya. The band creates a soundtrack for the occasion, to strike a chord with Kali’s new generation of devotees, giving traditional Shyama Sangeet a millennial makeover.

With 'Dakshineswar: Legends of Kali,’ HistoryTV18 creates a definitive one-hour that shines a light on the mythology and mystique of the fearsome Kali. The clutter-breaking film, available in English, Hindi, Tamil and Telugu, aims to interpret and showcase the abiding faith in the ancient tradition of Shakti, in 21st Century India. In doing so, the film delves into surrounding themes of feminism, egalitarianism, inclusiveness and pluralism, as well as issues of identity and belief that bridge the gap between social and economic class, caste, religion, and gender. With genre-defining storytelling, exciting characters and expert opinion, this isn’t just a film about a Goddess and Her magnificent temple. It is the telling of the story of the cycle of creation and destruction, faith, symbolism and cultural truths.
