    COVID-19 effect: Dettol Toilet Soap tops BARC list in week 20

    Mumbai: As people in India became more aware of personal and home hygiene due to the coronavirus pandemic, antiseptic soaps and cleaning liquid brands topped the advertising charts released by the Broadcast Audience Research Council (BARC). As per its data for top brands and advertisers between 15 May and 21 May, 2021 (Week 20), Dettol Toilet Soaps led the chart with 555.13 (000 secs) of ad volume, followed by Vanish Oxi Action in second place with 489.52 (000 secs) of ad volume.

    Disinfectant surface cleaner Lizol is in third spot with 489.43 (000 secs) of ad volume, while Dettol Liquid Soap and Dettol Antiseptic liquid bagged fourth and fifth spots with 474.86 (000 secs) and 448.53 (000 secs) of ad volume respectively. 

    While the list is purely dominated by antiseptic and disinfectant brands, streaming platform Amazon Prime Video garnered the sixth spot with 431.33 (000 secs) of ad volume. Unlike its competitors including Netflix and Disney+Hotstar, Amazon Prime Video has spent a lot on advertising, especially on general entertainment channels (GEC) over the past few months. 

    Dettol Intense Cool Soap, Harpic, and Moov Strong Diclofenac Gel bagged hours for the seventh, eighth, and ninth positions with 408.34, 3882.42, and 350.89 (000 secs) of ad volume respectively. Harpic Power Plus 10X Max Clean held on to the tenth spot with 330.86 (000 secs) in ad volume. 

    Reckitt Benckiser India led the advertiser’s list in week 20 by registering 5509.47 (000 secs) advertising volume followed by Hindustan Lever Limited with 4807.86 (000 secs) ad volume. The third position has been grabbed by Brooke Bond Lipton India Limited with 878.64 (000 secs) ad volume, while Colgate Palmolive India Limited stood at the fourth spot with 709.34 (000 secs) ad volume. 

    Other advertisers who bagged their spots in the top ten list are Procter & Gamble (629.21), ITC Limited (614.42), Cadburys India Limited (588.89), Pepsi Co (562.24), Amazon Online India Pvt Limited (541.51), and Smithkline Beecham (365.62).

    Sudhir Sitapati moves on from HUL, to be replaced by Srinandan Sundaram

    NEW DELHI: Hindustan Unilever (HUL) executive director foods and refreshment Sudhir Sitapati is moving on from the FMCG major. He will be replaced by Srinandan Sundaram, currently executive director – customer development. The appointment will be effective 1 July 2021.

    Sitapati is leaving the organisation to pursue an external opportunity.

    He joined HUL as a management trainee in 1999 and has successfully managed roles across sales and marketing. As executive director – foods and refreshment, he led the transformation of the brand’s Tea portfolio into a purpose-led category that regained market leadership and gained shares for the last three years.

    During his tenure, he also led the merger of Adityaa Milk and more recently, GSK Consumer Healthcare business into HUL, bringing iconic brands like Horlicks and Boost into the Unilever family. The Unilever Food Solutions business was also rewired and transformed into a growth engine.

    Sundaram joined HUL as a management trainee in 1999 and over the last 22 years, has had a strong track record in both customer development and marketing. In his current role, Srinandan has been at the forefront of bringing in leading-edge technology and transforming the company’s CD organisation into a high tech – high touch team. The Shikhar app, launched under his leadership, has lent a competitive edge to the business, especially during the pandemic and is the largest eb2b app in India today.

    HUL chairman & MD Sanjiv Mehta said, “I would like to thank Sudhir for his immense contributions to the company over the last two decades.     Mars Wrigley’s India biz elevates Varun Kandhari to director – marketing

    NEW DELHI: Multinational confectionery maker Mars Wrigley has elevated Varun Kandhari to the post of director – marketing and customer marketing for India. He has been with the organisation for seven years, is based in the Gurugram office and succeeds Yogesh Tewari.

    Kandhari joined Mars Chocolate Business in September 2014 as senior brand manager and was subsequently promoted to marketing manager – chocolates for Mars Wrigley business in October 2017.

    In his new role, he will be responsible for leading the marketing and customer marketing functions for Mars Wrigley India across all categories.

    Mars Wrigley- India general manager Kalpesh R Parmar said, “Through his tenure, Varun has played a crucial role in value creation and developing successful marketing strategies. In line with our goals to grow our business and develop our brands better, I am confident that Varun, with his energy, enthusiasm, and expertise, is the perfect lead to help us take Mars Wrigley to greater heights.”

    Before joining Mars Wrigley, Kandhari was associated with Hindustan Unilever where he managed brands like Surf Excel and Wheel.

    HUL Q4: Net profit up 41%; health, hygiene & nutrition portfolios drive growth

    NEW DELHI: FMCG major Hindustan Unilever (HUL) reported a good set of numbers on all fronts for the quarter ending 31 March 2021. Beating market estimates by a significant margin, net profit surged 41 per cent to Rs 2,143 crore on the back of a solid 16 per cent volume growth.

    Revenue grew by 34.6 per cent year-on-year to Rs 12,132 crore during Q4. Domestic consumer growth was at 21 per cent.

    For the fiscal 2020-21, the consumer goods company said its consolidated net profit was at Rs 7,999 crore, as compared to Rs 6,756 crore in 2019-20, a growth of 18 per cent. Consolidated total income for FY21 was at Rs 47,438 crore, as against Rs 40,415 crore in FY20.

    Health, hygiene and nutrition, which makes up 80 per cent of business, grew in double-digits for the third consecutive quarter, while discretionary and out-of-home categories improved sequentially, the company said.

    Home care growth at 15 per cent was enabled by a strong recovery in fabric wash. Household care continued its strong performance delivering double-digit growth. Liquids and fabric sensations continued to outperform, benefitting from robust market development initiatives, stated HUL.

    “Our in-quarter performance was strong on both the top-line and bottom-line. Despite challenging times, in FY21 our business ecosystem has withstood the disruption and demonstrated agility and resilience across the value chain,” said HUL chairman & MD Sanjiv Mehta. “We have delivered on our multi stakeholder business model. Our purpose-led brands and capabilities were further strengthened during the year and this positions us well to serve our consumers during this turbulent period.”

    The company’s focus will firmly remain behind delivering volume led competitive growth, he added.

    Mehta went on to say that the recent surge in Covid cases is of serious concern and “ensuring safety and well-being of people remains our top priority”.

    HUL’s Deepika Bhan to lead Tata Consumer Products’ packaged foods biz

    NEW DELHI: Tata Consumer Products (TCP) has roped in Deepika Bhan as the new president of the company’s packaged foods division in India. The appointment will come into effect from 27 April 2021.

    Bhan joins TCP from Hindustan Unilever, where she was global brand director – haircare for south Asia. She has had varied stints in sales, customer marketing, media, brand and category/ P&L roles in her career during which she has led large teams across brands and portfolios. She has also worked with PepsiCo and Tata Motors.

    “We are delighted to welcome Deepika on board to lead our foods portfolio. We aspire to build this business through agility, innovation and strengthening our brands, and Deepika will lead us in this exciting growth phase,” said Tata Consumer Products MD & CEO Sunil D’Souza.

    TCP's foods portfolio includes brands such as Tata Salt, Tata Sampann and Soulfull. In India, the company has a reach of over 200 million households, along with an annual turnover of Rs 10,000 crore with operations in domestic and international markets.

    “I’m looking forward to being part of this journey as we build the foods business on the base of the strong leadership position and iconic brands that the company has created. I’m particularly happy to be a part of the Tata Group- an organisation which is purpose-led and built on strong values,” Bhan stated.

    The announcement comes days after the consumer goods major appointed Puneet Das as president of its packaged beverages business in India and south Asia.

    Reckitt continued its run as the biggest advertiser of the week with 247483 ad AMA. HUL came in second with 225461 insertions.

    Cadburys bagged the third rank this time with 42088 ad generations. Brooke Bond placed fourth with 37982 ad insertions.

    Lakme and Pepsi Co secured fifth and sixth place with 28032 and 27096 ad views respectively.

    The fourth and fifth spots were acquired by PolicyBazaar and Dettol Intense Cool Soap with 19683 and 15902 ad AMA respectively.

    Dettol Liquid Soap bagged the sixth spot with 12858 ad views.

    For the second week, Reckitt Benckiser, now rechristened as Reckitt, continued to lead the top advertisers list with 235449 ad AMA. HUL came in second with 200102 insertions.

    ITC bagged the third rank this time with 52487 ad generations. Cadburys placed fourth with 41237 ad insertions.

    The data reflects the top 10 advertisers and brands across genres on India’s television, 2+ Individuals, NCCS. All demonstrating ads that were inserted the most in week 10 of 2021.

    Top Advertisers:

    After many months, Hindustan Unilever (HUL) ceded the top spot to Reckitt Benckiser, which was the biggest advertiser in week 10 with 233634 ad AMA. HUL finished a distant second with 207714 insertions.

    Cadburys bagged the third rank this time with 42919 ad generations. ITC came in fourth with 40556 ad insertions.

    Brooke Bond and Godrej Consumer Products secured fifth and sixth place with 35751 and 34356 ad views.
