    JAINHITS reaches out to LCOs from HP, Punjab & Haryana

    NEW DELHI: More than 150 local cable operators (LCOs) from Himachal Pradesh, Haryana and Punjab attended a tri-state business meet organised by JAINHITS in Simla. The meeting aimed at explaining to the LCOs, the working of the satellite based solution for digitisation of cable services.

     

    Earlier this year, JAINHITS had also organised a similar meet in Andhra Pradesh which was attended by around 625 LCOs.

     

    At the meet, senior members of JAINHITS briefed cable operators about its services and offerings. The HITS player also provided cost effective solutions to LCOs for running fully DAS compliant digital cable TV services. During this interactive meet, the LCOs were interested to know more on the entire spectrum of consumer products and services that will be provided by JAINHITS such as high speed, cloud and hybrid broadband TV (HBB TV).

     

    While the number of channels being offered by the company stands at 250 including all major pay TV, JAINHITS will soon roll out its full HD and multi-screen services for consumers. The key proposition of the HITS platform is its cost-effective investment for cable operators which stands at a minimum of only Rs 25,000 per month. With this, they expect to do business with 400 plus partners and install over 3000 Mini Downlink Headend’s across 640 districts of India by the end of 2014.

     

    Cable Operators Federation of India (COFI) president Roop Sharma expressed surprise at the overwhelming response. She said JAINHITS provides instant digitisation solution to cable operators with minimal investments and thus stands to play a pivotal role in the digitisation of all analogue networks with its triple play offering of video, voice and data. “Not only do they possess the content but have managed to attain all necessary approvals required for supplying cable TV and broadband to consumers,” Sharma said. 

     

    JAINHITS national sales head Jeet Narayan Singh said, “We believe that conducting these joint meetings in key cities and states across the country is of great significance. It is these sub urban regions that need to be tapped and facilitated with superior TV products and services.     ETV News Himachal/Haryana to launch on 26 March

    MUMBAI: Ramoji Rao founded ETV group that is now under Network18 has got one more launch up its sleeve targeting the northern states of Himachal Pradesh and Haryana. Come 26 March, the group will launch its regional Hindi news channel, ETV News Himachal Pradesh/Haryana.

     

    Targeted at the age group 15+ SEC ABC, the channel will help the ETV group expand into markets beyond Delhi. To tap into viewership, the launch has been timed ahead of the Lok Sabha elections, just like the recently launched Bangla and Kannada ETV news channels. The 24X7 channel will cover 80 per cent news from the two states and the remaining 20 per cent from the rest of the nation. The news stories will encompass politics, sports, culture and crime.

     

    With 10 reporters, 20 stringers and 10 desk editors currently on-board, ETV News Himachal Pradesh/Haryana will broadcast from its Hyderabad studio for now offering only studio based shows and later move to Chandigarh after the polls with a corresponding bureau in Simla to provide full fledged news bulletins and live coverage. There will be bureaus located in Dharamshala, Rohtak and Kurukshetra as well. Balwant Takshak has been appointed as the editor and Narendra Bhaskar as the marketing head for the channel.

     

    “Haryana is a big market. Real estate and other industries are growing day-by-day. In Himachal Pradesh, information about a lot of government schemes does not reach the common people. This channel can be a bridge between the government and the common people. Revenue can also be generated through this mechanism,” says ETV group editor Rajesh Raina. According to sources in the know, the channel has made an investment of nearly Rs 15 crore and is looking to break even in two years’ time.

     

    No advertiser is aboard yet and the marketing campaign will follow only after the channel is launched. Meanwhile, ETV News Himachal Pradesh/Haryana is in for competition from India News Haryana, Focus Haryana, Khabarfast 24X7, Janta TV and Total TV.

    NEW DELHI: Senior Indian Administrative Service Officer Bharti S. Sihag has been appointed as Additional Secretary and Financial Adviser, Ministry of Information and Broadcasting.

     

    An officer from Himachal Pradesh cadre of the 1983 batch, she is presently posted in the state.

     

    The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet also cancelled orders issued earlier for appointment of Annie Moracs, IP & TA & FS (1979) for this post.

    Cisco to be top Cas firm in India with NDS buy

    MUMBAI: Cisco will become the largest video and content security solutions provider in India following its $5 billion acquisition of NDS.


    The California-based networking giant has been highly active in the Indian market, inking deals with several multi-system operators (MSOs) for providing digital set-top boxes (STBs).


    Cisco Capital has also provided vendor financing to some cable TV networks. It has, for instance, supported Fastway Transmissions, which has presence in Punjab, Haryana and Himachal Pradesh, and Gujarat Telelinks Private Ltd (GTPL), a joint venture where Hathway Cable & Datacom has 50 per cent stake, for its digital services in Kolkata.


    NDS, the video and content security software company currently owned by News Corp and Permira Advisers LLP, is already a major player in the Indian market. It provides encryption systems integration to big digital distribution companies like Tata Sky, Airtel Digital TV, Hathway Cable & Datacom, Den Networks and Asianet.


    “NDS’ service provider footprint will expand Cisco’s video customer base internationally, including in emerging markets, such as in China and India, where video subscriber growth is increasing rapidly. For media companies, this acquisition will strengthen Cisco’s ability to provide them with a platform to directly serve their customers and better align with service providers,” Cisco MD, Corporate Strategy, Investments and Acquisitions – Asia Pacific Japan Theatre & WW Services Joydeep Bose told Indiantelevision.com.


    Cisco will also have access to NDS‘ R&D centre at Bangalore in India. NDS has invested over $250 million in the country and has 1900 people, with offices in Delhi, Mumbai and Bangalore.


    “The merger between NDS and Cisco brings the best of both worlds to the digital-pay TV market. NDS is the leader in the digital broadcasting sector in India, securing and enhancing the TV- watching experience of over 20 million homes in India. We can leverage the resources that Cisco brings to this merger, so that we can both work together to support the digitalisation process in India,” NDS senior VP, GM and MD, Asia Pacific Sue Taylor told Indiantelevision.


    Added Bose, “In India, NDS is a leading provider to the satellite TV market, which is rapidly growing due to increasing subscriber penetration.”


    Cisco, with the new acquisition, will be in a position to aggressively push for expansion to smaller cable TV networks in India, something which NDS has not been able to tap due to cost reasons.


    “Cisco will become the largest Cas (conditional access system) company in India with the acquisition of NDS. We already have a 10-year association with Cisco for our broadband service,” said You Broadband and Cable India MD & CEO EVS Chakravarthy. Cisco also provides Cas solutions to Scod18, You Broadband‘s cable TV outfit in Mumbai.


    Cisco agreed Thursday to buy NDS for $5 billion, including $1 billion retention-based incentives and debt as it seeks to expand its video services business. The acquisition will strengthen Cisco‘s position in emerging markets like China, besides India. BSkyB, Canal Plus and DirecTV are also NDS‘ main clients.


    “The NDS acquisition is aligned with our video priority and our strategic initiatives – to lead in emerging countries, build software platforms, and drive business and technology architectures. NDS’s video software solutions are complementary to Cisco’s Videoscape platform, and together they will transform how service providers and media companies deliver next generation video experiences,” said Bose.


    The acquisition will have an impact in the Indian market. “This is in line with Cisco‘s earlier acquisition of Scientific Atlanta to create an end-to-end triple play solution for cable networks in the digital economy. The NDS purchase is in the same direction as it seeks to expand its Videoscape entertainment platform. Cisco boxes will come with NDS embedded Cas,” said Chakravarthy.


    The acquisition is expected to close during the second half of calendar year 2012, subject to regulatory approvals.


    Fastway Transmissions, the cable distribution company with foothold in Punjab, Haryana and Himachal Pradesh, has signed a pact with Cisco to deploy over two million STBs over the next two years.

  • News Channels: Sensation-fatigue, government’s attitude and regional channels will decide future content

    So, as one captain of the industry says, if the advertisers stay with the credible, then some channels will die out and TAM would have to ask itself serious questions, or “there will be no place for it in the Indian TV news market”.

    Lastly, come to the Content Code. If anyone feels that the government will wait and wait and not act till the news channels give in their draft, slated for this month end (but one never knows), then it would be foolishness.

    This is a precarious position for the ruling UPA and with Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh going the BJP way, it will be even more circumspect in dealing with the media. And yet, it is after all not the parties in power but the bureaucrats who bring out the pending issues in front of successive new ministers and make them do the things they want.

    Many bureaucrats –not necessarily just the ones in Shastri Bhavan – have suffered due to stings and for many of them, controlling content is important. So electoral concerns may have made Prime Minsiter Manmohan Singh ask I&B minister Priyaranjan Dasmunsi to soft pedal for the moment, but the government will ultimately set up the regulator and the code will be in place. At least, that is what Shastri Bhavan insiders have given us to understand.

    In the year to come, content will be shaped by a few things, of which the first will be the government’s attitude to it and that will largely be patterned on how the news channels behave vis-?-vis the government. They can do some serious work on their own Code and the chances are that the government will accept it, just as it had adopted the ASCI code for advertisement. However, if the attitude of the NBA is to play footsie with the government, they could well kill their own chances of governing themselves, which is the best thing one can wish for.

    The second deciding factor would be what some see as fatigue setting in on sensationalism, which even Naqvi has warned about. The channels themselves are running out of sensational ideas that are new and more importantly, that would last, for all the experiments have at last died, and the pace of mortality of newer ideas is increasing.

    The third will be the government’s position on TAM, and it has warned TAM when the CEO failed to turn up for a Parliamentary Committee meeting in Mumbai at the end of this year. If the government – and in all probability it will, because that is a way of controlling content without talking of the much hated Code imposes certain modes of operation and measures TAM must take for rating channels, it will have a direct impact on content.

    Last but not least, and though it will take some time, is the massive oncoming growth of regional channels and their own niche content that would drive the mainstream channels to do a hard rethink.

    For the moment, the proponents of serious journalism are assured, with IBN 7 seeking relief in the fact that they did touch 14 per cent and are doing better business than rival India TV; NDTV seeing market assurance from the fact of its grossing the second tallest figures, and CNN-IBN as well as NDTV going into the diversification drive emphasising that the serious guys are not about to fall by the wayside.

    MUMBAI: Hercules MTB Himachal 2006, the second edition of India’s first Mountain Cycling ride and race is scheduled to take place in Himachal Pradesh from 4-13 October 2006.
    The event is being marketed and promoted worldwide by IMG/TWI. IMG/TWI will produce and broadcast this event on Trans World Sport reaching 260 million households over 131 countries worldwide. IMG/TWI will also broadcast this event via SNTV that delivers sports news 365 days of the year to 850 million people. In India, the event will air on ESPN.

    Being tagged as one of the most adventurous sporting event of the country in its first year, the second edition of the challenging ride promises to be bigger, better and more exciting. With over 160 international and Indian riders competing for the championship, the race will be test of physical endurance and mental determination.

    In this second edition, the riders will be pedaling the distance of over 600 kilometers in the wilderness trails of Himalayas. The riders will be challenged to make their way through single track, double track, and broken tarmac and sometimes-just footpaths. The entire terrain of over 600 kilometers will see long down hills and grueling up hills.

    As cyclists will pass through straight stretches, there are sections of hike and bike, and there are fast paced gravel roads. Hercules MTB Himachal 2006 promises to offer little bit of everything for riders of all initiations (Mountain Bikers, Road Riders etc), and just not dirt roads and single tracks.

    Hercules, which manufactures mountain terrain bikes in the country, is sponsoring the event. Conceputlised in 2005, Himalayan Adventure Sports and Tourism Promotion Association (Hastpa) are the orgnisers of Hercules MTB Himachal. Hastpa is an organisation working towards sustainable tourism development in the state of Himachal Pradesh. Hastpa is organising the race under the aegis of the International Mountain Bicycling Association and the event is supported by the Department of Tourism, Government of Himachal Pradesh.

    The event is being organised as a wilderness mountain bike race, where participants sleep in tent villages that are set up prior to their arrival and broken down immediately after the start each morning. Enthusiasts will be faced to endure the climate and physical challenges of the Himachal Himalayas. All legs begin at 8:00 am and riders are expected to reach the finish line by 6:00 pm daily. Stages include breakfast, a pre-designated lunch area, beverages along the route, dinner and an awards ceremony each night where the winners are awarded Leader Jerseys.

    Bharti Airtel inks $ 1 billion network expansion contract with Ericsson

    MUMBAI: Bharti Airtel today announced the signing of an estimated $ 1 billion network expansion contract with Swedish telecommunications equipment manufacturer Ericsson.

    The contract will enable Bharti Airtel to rapidly expand its mobile services footprint further and reach out to all towns and cities in 15 telecom circles in the country. The three-year service contract with Ericsson is towards the design, planning, supply and installation commissioning of Airtel networks in these circles.

    Ericsson will also upgrade the network with mobile softswitch (Media Gateway and MSC Servers), the solution that paves the way to an all-IP network. Bharti Airtel will be able to reduce the operational costs and introduce new services in a cost-efficient way.

    The scope of the agreement extends to 15 Airtel circles of Delhi, Haryana, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, UP (West), Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Chennai, Karnataka, Kerala, Rajasthan, UP (East), Jammu & Kashmir, Assam and North East.

    MUMBAI: Discovery will air a one hour special The Seven Year Old Surgeon on 10 June at 8 pm.In 2001 seven year old Akrit Jaswal gained celebrity status when he successfully performed an operation to separate the fused fingers of an eight year old girl in his small village in North India.

    Now the 12 year old researches cures for cancer in his laboratory which was extablished by his proud parents. Viewers will also see him going to the UK to meet British scientists who offer their verdicts on him. The show also interviews psychologists who assess the effects these achievements could be having on his childhood.

    Jaswal became obssessed with medicine at an early age. He memorised medical books and winessed surgeries. He even experimented on animals at his home in Himachal Pradesh. As the word of the young prodigy spread villagers flocked to hime home seeking advice or just a glimpse of the boy.

    Much to his discomfort he was idolised and revered as a God. However he did meet some of the hordes that gathered on his doorstep. He has prescribed medicine for over a thousand cases including a man suffering from a brain disorder.

    DD Direct Plus sets to be installed free of cost in low terrestrial density

    MUMBAI: Targeting the areas wherein the terrestrial coverage is negligible, the free-to-air direct-to-home (DTH) service of Doordarshan — DD Direct Plus will soon be available to states including — Chattisgarh, Gujarat, Himachal Pradesh, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, North-East Region, Rajasthan and Uttaranchal.

    The Information & Broadcasting and parliamentary affairs minister P R Das Munshi has announced that 10,000 DTH receive systems including the dish and the set-to-box (STB) will be distributed free-of-cost.

    In an official statement issued, the free distribution of DTH sets is targeted to the states where the terrestrial coverage is lower than national coverage.

    This was done through public institutions viz. Anganwadis, Schools, Public Health Centres, Panchayats, Youth Clubs, Cooperative Societies, etc. The free distribution of DTH sets is targeted to the States where the terrestrial coverage is lower than national coverage.

    So far, 8,465 DTH receive units have been installed in the uncovered villages of above States and North-East Region.

    The DD Direct Plus platform includes the Doordarshan channels, private TV channels and audio channels of All India Radio. Prasar Bharati will provide 100 television channels and 50 radio channels by the end of this year (2006). The service is available on the high power transponders of NSS-6 satellite.
