    DoT takes on record spectrum sharing pact between RCom and RTL IN 800 MHz

    NEW DELHI: The Department of Telecommunications has taken on record 800 Mhz Spectrum Sharing in seven circles of Reliance Communications Ltd (RCom) and two circles of Reliance Telecom Limited (RTL), wholly owned subsidiary with Reliance Jio Infocomm Limited (RJIL).

    Giving this information to Bombay Stock Exchange, Reliance Communications Ltd said this was with effect from 21 April 2016.

    The development was with reference to the earlier letter dated 18 January 2016 informing sharing of spectrum in 800 MHz with RJIL.

    The Company and RTL are now able to share spectrum with RJIL in nine circles:  Mumbai, Uttar Pradesh (East), Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, Orrisa, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Assam and the North East.

    The DoT had in February approved sharing of active infrastructure like antenna used for transmitting mobile signals.

    It is learnt that RCom has already paid Rs 5,383.84 crores to liberalise its spectrum in 16 circles which include Delhi, Mumbai, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, UP East and West, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Kolkata and Bihar.

    A liberalised spectrum allows telecom operators to use any technology to deliver mobile service like 3G and 4G. Besides, it allows introduction of new technologies and sharing and trading spectrum with other operators for its efficient use.

    The Cabinet has earlier cleared liberalisation of spectrum allocated without auction to telecom companies – at prices recommended by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India with the balance being collected after deriving market rate through bidding

    NEW DELHI: At a time when the last phase of the digital addressable system for cable TV is gathering momentum, the government cleared just under forty multi system operators over the past month, taking the total to 792 including 231 which have permanent (ten-year licences) by 26 February.

    The last list issued on 26 February had put the total at 753 including the 231 which have permanent (ten-year) licences. The Information and Broadcasting had by 12 January cancelled the licences of 26 MSOs and closed their cases.

    According to the list issued today but dated till 26 March, the areas of operation of some of the MSOs have been revised or amended. None of the 39 new licencees have got pan-India registration, though some have the registration to cover a particular state and most have only clearances for some districts. The new registrations are for from Himachal Pradesh, Bihar, Meghalaya, Jammu and Kashmir, Tamil Nadu Gujarat, Manipur, Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka, Rajasthan, Jharkhand, Uttarakhand, Maharashtra, Pondicherry, Chhatisgarh, Telangana, Odisha, and Andhra Pradesh.

    With the home ministry directive about doing away with security clearances for MSOs’ not being communicated in writing to the MIB, the pace remains slow.

    The permanent licence issued to Kal Cable of Chennai had been cancelled on 20 August, 2014 but this cancellation was set aside by the Madras high court on 5 September the same year. However, Kal Cable’s name continues to be in the cancelled list – presumably because the cases are still pending.

    Sources said many MSOs holding provisional licences had not completed certain formalities relating to shareholders and so on.

    MIB updates areas in 16 states & UTs to be covered in DAS Phase III

    NEW DELHI: The Ministry of Information & Broadcasting (MIB) today updated the urban areas to be covered in 16 states during Phase III of the Digital Addressable System (DAS), which is to be completed by the end of this year.

     

    These states and union territories are: Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Gujarat, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jharkhand, Mizoram, Nagaland, Odisha, Rajasthan, Punjab, Tripura, Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Andaman and Nicobar, and Puducherry.

     

    The ministry also indicated the areas that have been deleted and those which have been added, apart from the number of television households to be covered in each case. Deletions have been made on the basis of reports of empowered officers in each state.

     

    This list does not contain areas covered in the first two phases.

     

    The list of areas to be covered in Phase III had been issued on 30 April this year.

    MUMBAI: Dharamshala & Mcleodganj have become the first hill stations in Himachal Pradesh to have Reliance Jio’s Wi-Fi service – JIOnet.

     

    Minister of Housing, urban development and town & country planning of Himachal Pradesh Sudhir Mishra inaugurated the service. JIOnet’s high speed Wi-Fi service will cover Macleo Chowk and Temple road in Mcleodganj and Kotwali in Dharamshala of Himachal Pradesh.

     

    It is part of the Himachal Pradesh government’s initiative to convert Dharamshala into a ‘Smart City.’ People and visitors of Dharamshala and Mcleodganj will be able to access the services on their smart phones and tablets. This service will also be available at Mall Road, Manali, Kullu and Hamirpur locations.

     

    Speaking on this new advancement, a Reliance Jio spokesperson said, “High speed data connectivity is one of the foundations on which future prosperity of cities and nations will be built. By deploying Jionet’ Wi-Fi services at Dharamshala and Mcleodganj, a famous tourist destination, we want people to experience the high speed internet and rich digital content through specially designed apps to enrich their lives.”

     

    The feedback from users will be used to improve the services further as Jio gets ready for its formal launch. After commencement of service,  4G LTE, Wi-Fi and LTE networks will operate seamlessly with each other.

    NEW DELHI: A number of Indian television news channels have tied up with the government and various agencies to put together a unified platform for ensuring ethical journalism and to look at a collective solution for ridding the industry of the various problems that continue to plague it without a workable solution in sight.

     

    S.K. Gupta (from Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh’s channel TV100) is the chairman of the All India News Broadcasters Association, while I.D. Garg (of Khabarein Abhi Tak) and Vikram  Nevar (Tazaa TV, Kolkata) are the vice chairmen.

     

    The new organization, comprising heads and owners of small and medium news channels, held its election meeting under the interim chairmanship of Anil Gaba of Total TV.

     

    The first committee, with a two-year tenure, was elected and put in place to take the agenda of the association further.

     

    The other members of the new committee are:

     

    General Secretary – Patiala based Channel 2’s Tejinder Pal Singh

     

    Secretary – SMBC Insight’s Dr. Prakash Sharma

     

    Treasurer – Khabarein Abhi Tak’s I.D. Garg

     

    Member-Working Committee – Khabar Fast’s A.K. Samaa, Azad News’ MS Walia

     

    An interim committee was formed in June 2014. The elections followed the formal process of applying to the government for the registration of the association, and getting the association formally registered by the registrar of societies.

     

    Speaking on the Association, secretary Prakash Sharma said, “The association will work towards creating a level playing field in the country at par with the national news channels. Apart from focusing on the problems of the industry, the association will work towards ensuring clean and ethical journalism, and work towards curbing paid news and ensuring guidelines for self-regulation. The association will also work towards creating a platform for news syndication and exchange amongst member organisations, collective marketing and distribution.”

     

    The All India News Broadcasters association will also act as a unified body working in conjunction with the government and representing the views, issues and concerns of the broadcasting industry, and play an exemplary role in finding workable solutions.

    Dharamshala Filmfest’s initiative for Himalayan film makers

    NEW DELHI: The third Dharamshala International Film Festival (DIFF) has launched the DIFF Film Fellows initiative for Himalayan filmmakers to encourage young filmmakers.

     

    The festival to be held from 30 October to 2 November, will take applicants who are 25 years of age or younger and the applications have to be sent in by 31 August.

     

    Though the films can be of any genre, the programme is targeted specifically at filmmakers from the Indian Himalayan regions including Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarkhand, Sikkim, Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, and the hill regions of West Bengal and Assam.

     

    Five filmmakers will be selected to attend DIFF 2014 and participate in its various events, including screenings of the best of contemporary independent cinema. Master classes and workshops will be held by visiting filmmakers and industry professionals.

     

    The selected participants will be able to engage in special one-on-one mentorship sessions with these visiting filmmakers.

     

    The programme covers train fares, food and lodging for the selected participants for the duration of the festival.

    The folk forms from the Western region of India are Garba, Raas, Sugam Sangeet and Siddi Dhamal from Gujarat; Lavani, Povada, Bhaleri, Owi, Palane and Artya from Maharashtra and the effervescent folk tunes of Goa.

     

    The Central region of India is rich with folk forms like Nirgun Bhajan, Maach and Bundelkhandi folk songs from Madhya Pradesh and Pandvani from Chhattisgarh.

     

    In the east, musical forms like Janana and Mardana Jhumar and Dhumkuch from Jharkhand and Bhavaiya, Tukkha, Baul and Bhatiali from West Bengal will strike a chord with the audience. Speaking on the show launch, Mr. Subhadarshi Tripathy, Channel Head, ZeeQ, said, “We intend to sensitize children about the diminishing popularity of the folk music and at the same time enhance the musical intelligence in children.
