  • Mr Goswami, please come out of the studio

Mr Goswami, please come out of the studio

For the elections of the century, news channels are doing all they can to not only outdo each other but also cover the elections, accurately.

And with half the country already inked, the fight is going to get only tougher. The primetime anchors who are used to the air-conditioned studios have left their comfort zones and are now roaming every length and breadth of the country in the scorching Indian summer.

After the countless exit and voters’ polls and panel discussions, it is now the editors, who have taken upon themselves the task to gauge the mood of the nation. With over 80 lakh polling stations across the country, expenditure nearing Rs 110 crore and 40 lakh polling staff ready for more than 60 crore voters set to exercise their mandate this time, the anchors are venturing out to the villages and city by-lanes to gather ground information from the common man and find out who will they like to see as their new Prime Minister.

In the drive to get the most accurate election coverage, Headlines Today has even got a special bus made. The Dilip Chabaria designer-made Election Express claims to cover over 8,000 kilometers, informing the nation on everything and anything that has to do with elections.

The journo couple, Rajdeep Sardesai and Sagarika Sardesai, of CNN IBN too have covered the various cities to know which candidate will be opted for and why, locally.

The Hindi and regional news channels too have boarded the outdoor express. The debates are taking place out in the open, now.

However, one man (read Arnab Goswami) who knows all the questions which the nation wants to know hasn’t left the four-walled studio. Wonder why?

Is it that he is too used to shouting down at people in the studio or is he is afraid that someone might just yell back at him if he tries to do the same what he does in the studio, out in the open?

Maybe Mr Nation-wants-to-know, who suffers from OCD of not being able to see others talk, feels it to be a waste of time and money to go out to the streets where the real political debates are held.

Imagine even if he did go out to the streets what will happen? Many might just fall on the feet of the ‘Rajnikanth of news.’ That’s quite a possibility.

Hate him or love them, but you cannot ignore him. One has to give him that much credit. And yes, he is that one reason, which makes many switch on Times Now.

So while he did go out to vote (his selfie caught everyone’s attention); it will be a sight, when he actually steps out on the streets, to cover elections.

Wish Mr Goswami listens and comes out of the “shell” to cover the real deal in the Indian summers!

News X strengthening its editorial team

MUMBAI: Well known anchor on Headlines Today, Rahul Shivshankar, is packing his bags back to his favourite news channel – News X – with a mission in mind. From 4 September, he will be seen as managing editor with the channel and will be hosting the primetime show. Diptosh Majumdar, former National affairs editor with DNA, also joins the team in the same capacity.

Shivshankar has years of experience. He was associated with News X as editorial director for a year between February 2011 and 2012 and six years with Times Now before that. • TV Today telecasts 16 per cent net profit rise in FY 2013

TV Today telecasts 16 per cent net profit rise in FY 2013

MUMBAI: Its FM radio broadcasting business is on the turnaround trail. And that – apart from its mainstay its news TV channels Aaj Tak, Headlines Today, Dilli Aaj Tak and Tezz- has helped Living Media India Ltd’s (The India Today group’s) television & FM radio broadcasting arm, TV Today Network, post a pleasing 16 per cent rise in its net profit in the year ended 31 March 2013. However, its Q4 2013 net profit has fallen 13.3 per cent against the corresponding previous year’s Q4-2012.

TV Today Network has been one of the more efficiently run news organisations in the Indian news broadcasting sector and has been reporting profits for some time now. Other listed news TV organisations have been bleeding and have just about starting showing profits. Hence, its Q4-2013 results appear to be just an aberration.

Let us look at the standalone Q4-2013 financials as against Q4-2012

Q4-2013 total revenues stand at Rs 84.27 crore, a drop of over 4.7 per cent as against last corresponding Q4-2012’s Rs 88.46 crore. Its TV broadcasting business contributes nearly 97 per cent at Rs 81.63 crore to its revenues while its FM radio broadcasting operations through its channel ‘Oye 104.8’ generated Rs 2.64 crore.

The broadcaster has managed to pare some of its expenses at Rs 77.89 crore in Q4-2013 as against last corresponding Q4-2012’s Rs 78.33 crore. The marginal difference is on account of its production costs being reduced to Rs 10.36 crore (Rs 11.24 crore).

Even though the company has seen a 13 per cent reduction in its net profit for Q4-2013 to Rs 6.36 crore (as against Q4-2012’s Rs 7.33 crore), what is heartening is the narrowing of its losses from its FM radio division in Q4-2013 to Rs 2.74 crore from Rs 4.46 crore in Q4-2012.

Let us take a look at the consolidated financials for the year ending 31 March 2013

As mentioned earlier, efficient management of its FM radio operations has helped TV Today Network in FY-2013. Its net profit for FY-2013 had a handsome increase of 16 per cent to Rs 12.21 crore (Rs 10.52 crore in FY-2012). A large part of this increase can be attributed to the decrease in losses at its FM radio division to Rs 13.24 crore from Rs 18.59 crore in FY-2012.

Total revenue for FY 2013 rose to Rs 312.66 crore as against FY-2012’s Rs 308.43 crore with TV broadcasting revenues contributing Rs 302.69 crore as against Rs 300 crore in FY-2012. Its FM radio division chipped in with Rs 9.98 crore as against Rs 8.09 crore last fiscal.

The company claims that its profits have been squeezed further on account of its payments to BSNL and Prasar Bharti amounting to Rs 80 lakh and monitoring charges for foreign satellite amounting to Rs 76.91 lakh.

From the short term perspective, its current liabilities including trade payables have significantly increased to Rs 128.39 crore in FY-2013 as against Rs 94.16 crore in FY-2012, a worrying 36 per cent rise, especially when its current assets have shot by only 24 per cent during the same period.

TV Today Network has made a strategic investment of Rs 45.52 crore in Mail Today Newspapers which is bringing out a daily newspaper in the north. Though Mail Today is in the initial stages of operations and presently incurring losses, the company holds a confident outlook of its future profitability.

The company has announced a 15 per cent dividend, even as the share closed at Rs 84.85 by the time trading ended on BSE.

  • Headlines Today introduces shows to ensure “Right to Be Heard”

Headlines Today introduces shows to ensure “Right to Be Heard”

NEW DELHI: Headlines Today has taken interactivity through social media a little further by introducing a nationwide new campaign to give the activist in every Indian a platform to speak and the channel will ensure that it is heard.

The website, www.righttobeheard.in, has an option where people can upload their videos, comments and issues they want to raise. There is also a hot line number for the same where they can call and record their message and Headlines Today team will get in touch with them to highlight and resolve their issues.

"Headlines Today has always given top priority to its audience and has always delivered to its promise of “You Matter” by covering stories of nation’s importance such as the Protest Against Corruption, Protest in Mumbai over Assam Riots, Ex-Air Hostess Geetika Sharma’s Suicide case, northern & Eastern Power Grids failure, etc that matters the most to the nation," the channel said.

In a category where most players talk about speed of news reporting and where increasingly news personalities are becoming opinionated, this campaign is a take that puts the viewer at the center of the story and empathizes with him.
The channel has started two new shows in sync with this campaign – The Right to be heard show and RTH Town hall show. The Right to be Heard show will raise and highlight the problems raised by the people of the country and which will then be investigated by the Headlines Today editorial team. It covers stories such as “Save River Yamuna”, “Increasing Noise pollution in the urban India”, “Right to Education to every India” and “Garbage issues in Bangalore”. The RTH Town Hall show is a weekly talk show that provides a platform for the public to debate the issues that concern them the most with the people in authority are to answer all their concerns.

The channel will be undertaking 360 degree marketing campaign including OOH, TV, print and Digital.

Commenting on the initiative, India Today Group CEO Ashish Bagga said, “With this initiative we are aiming to reach out to the growth aspiring Indian, who after his tireless efforts over many years is still helpless and ignored by the authorities in the system. We would support the campaign with extensive editorial coverage with special stories and shows to encourage viewers to come out and voice their concerns.

Vivek Malhotra, Vice president Marketing, Strategic Planning and Research – TV Today Network added, “At Headlines Today, we firmly believe that news reporting has a larger role than merely providing people with facts and information. What we do has the power to transform a society; to change people’s lives. Look at what’s happening around us – people have become more self-aware and are voicing their displeasure. In a country where traditionally we have been a ‘voiceless’ population that has to ‘make do’ with whatever is decided by the agents in power, but today things are changing – and people are ensuring their voices are being heard. Our new campaign whole-heartedly endorses this healthy attitude and urges people that voicing out their concerns and problems to the authorities is their right to be heard”.

Kush Rai has created the TVC for Black Pencil India with Shweta Ahuja and Shadab Abidi in his creative team through the Purple Vishnu Films production house, directed by Sainath Choudhury.

The TVC of the campaign follows a politician, a symbolic representative of a person in power but far removed from the common man of today, who ignores a woman on the street who is trying to talk to him but then can’t seem to get away from the voice of the woman – the voice of a common man (in this case the woman) demands justice.

Samarjit Choudhry, Executive Director, Blackpencil India that conceived this creative said: “We pride ourselves on being the world’s largest democracy – where each citizen has certain fundamental rights as laid out in the Constitution (including the right to speech). Juxtapose this with one of the biggest grouses we all have against the establishment – that no one listens to us. What emerged was this – shouldn’t the ‘Right to be Heard’ also be as fundamental as every other right that we have as Indian citizens? That was the genesis of the campaign. If Headlines Today could stand for something through which people could exercise their right to be heard, our campaign would have done its job. The beauty of this TVC is in the story-telling. It is a stark and haunting reminder to the people in power that they can’t brush away people’s voices under the carpet anymore.”
