MUMBAI: Film director Michael Apted of Coal Miner’s Daughter and The World Is Not Enough fame will direct the first three episodes of the new drama series Rome.
As reported earlier by Indiantelevision.com, Rome is a co-production between HBO and the BBC. It will begin shooting in Bulgaria next March. Production for the series will be based at Rome’s Cinecitta Studios, with additional location work throughout Europe and North Africa. The first season of 12 episodes is scheduled to air on HBO and BBC Two in 2005.
Carolyn Strauss and Anne Thomopoulos will oversee the project for HBO. BBC Controller of Drama Commissioning Jane Tranter and Gareth Neame will oversee the project for the BBC. HBO and the BBC previously partnered on the world war II miniseries Band of Brothers, which won the 2002 Emmy Award for Miniseries.
Rome deals with two ordinary Roman soldiers and their families. An intimate drama of love and betrayal, masters and slaves, and husbands and wives, it chronicles the time that saw the fall of a republic and the creation of an empire. The series begins in 51 BC, when Gaius Julius Caesar has completed his masterful conquest of Gaul after eight years of war and is preparing to return to Rome.

HBO’s new independent movie distribution wing
LOS ANGELES: US cable network HBO has launched a new division under its HBO Films label. The company which has produced critically acclaimed content such as Six Feet Under, Conspiracy is looking to leverage its reputation and expand into the world of independent film distribution.
A Reuters report states that the new division, HBO Films Domestic Theatrical Releasing, will be headed by Dennis O’Connor. HBO Films is also joing forces with sister company New Line Cinema and its Fine Line specialty film label to distribute films theatrically. The companies are all owned by AOL Time Warner
The first film that will be distributed is American Splendour. The movie blends non-fiction and fiction filmmaking in a story about comic book writer Harvey Pekar. Earlier this year, the film won the Grand Jury Prize for the best drama at the Sundance Film Festival. It will hit US cinemas next month.
HBO believes that its clout it has managed to generate will help give a boost to offbeat films that otherwise get lost in the shuffle. The deal with New Line/Fine Line gives HBO an immediate foot in the door in art-house theaters around the world, states the report. -
HBO’s ‘Sex and the city’ draws to a close in 2004
MUMBAI: HBO’s critically acclaimed comedy series Sex and The City with Sarah Jessica Parker will bow out next year. Its sixth season will be its last.
A Reuters report indicates that 20 half-hour episodes of the Emmy-winning comedy will be produced for the concluding season, with shooting set to start on 31 March in Gotham. 12 episodes will air from June, with the remaining eight unspooling in a sort of mini-season that will begin in January 2004.
The network’s gangster saga The Sopranos is also expected to wind up next year following the conclusion of its fifth season. In India the show airs on Zee English. However HBO is said to be keen on another season for The Soprano’s and talks are on with the series’ creator David Chase.
For the US, HBO has set its documentary schedule for the first half of this year. Among the upcoming documentary specials are Oliver Stone’s Commandante, a portrait of Fidel Castro; The Kid Stays in the Picture, based on Robert Evans’ autobiography; RFK daughter Rory Kennedy’s five-part Pandemic: Facing AIDS; and Unchained Memories: Readings From the Slave Narratives, based on interviews with former slaves. In addition production of Six Feet Under’s third season is under way, and rookie drama The Wire has been renewed for a second season.
