NBA condemns assault on mediapersons in Hissar, wants action against policemen

NEW DELHI: The News Broadcasters Association (NBA) vehemently condemned the brutal assault by policemen on journalists and cameramen who were covering the police action outside the ashram of self-styled godman Baba Rampal in Hissar, Haryana on 18 November.

In a press statement today, NBA president Rajat Sharma said: “This was a frontal attack on the freedom of the press. The whole nation was watching on television as policemen in ‘khaki’ were openly beating up journalists and cameramen who were merely doing their job of reporting. Policemen in uniform deliberately damaged expensive TV cameras and cellphones belonging to news channels and reporters, in full view of their senior officials.”

The NBA president has urged the Chief Minister of Haryana to ensure that action be taken immediately against the men in uniform who ordered and carried out the unprovoked attacks on journalists and cameramen.

“The NBA clearly wishes to put it on record that such a naked show of unbridled ‘khaki’ power is unacceptable under any canon of democracy. The powers-that-be must understand that the journalists were only carrying out their lawful duty of disseminating information to the people even as events were unfolding right in front of their eyes.

“For over two weeks now, the nation has been watching the spectacle of a state police looking completely helpless in arresting a self-styled godman hidden by his goons in his ashram and producing him before the Hon’ble High Court. On the contrary, the police today unleashed its power on helpless journalists doing their lawful duty.

“The NBA considers this attack a blot on the face of democracy, and an assault on the fundamental right to freedom of speech and expression as enshrined in the Constitution,” Sharma said.

“The Chief Minister must take exemplary action against the culprits to ensure that such shameful incidents are not repeated in future,” added Sharma.

Meanwhile, the Delhi Union of Journalists (DUJ) also strongly condemned the beating up of journalists and camerapersons who were covering the clashes between the police and supporters of controversial godman Rampal.

It said it had been reported that while some journalists have been injured, camera and equipment of photo journalists have been damaged or broken. Even DGP S N Vashisht, confronted with evidence, had to concede a journalist was beaten up and that he will investigate the matter.

The DUJ calls for the institution of a high level enquiry to probe the beatings of journalists. While demanding immediate compensation for those who have suffered injuries and damage to their equipment, the DUJ reiterates its demand that a compensation and insurance cover be put in place for media persons who while covering such conflicts have to face various hazardous tasks.

The DUJ would also like to state that no one is above the law. The use of women and children as protective shields and exposing them to grave risks is highly condemnable and cannot be tolerated.

  • Focus Group changes channel packaging for more focus

Focus Group changes channel packaging for more focus

MUMBAI: Gearing up for a full fledged launch very soon, upcoming Hindi news channel Focus News has undergone a makeover. Dropping its earlier logo and colour combination, the channel has revamped with fresh colours of red and white.

Ideated by JWT and executed by Clayground, the same logo format will be adopted for its other regional channels namely Focus Haryana, Focus Bangla, Focus Odisha, Focus NE and Focus Hi Fi, in the next two weeks. The on air look has also been changed, which has been done by an in house team.

The new logo has the map of the world fitted inside the ‘o’. Speaking on the change, Focus Group CEO Neeraj Sanan says, “Red and white are the colours of news channels. We wanted a unique dimension with an interesting shade.”

While the regional channels have been fully distributed, the national channel is currently available only on Videocon d2h, Tata Sky and from 1 November on DD Freedish. The group is awaiting its last leg of clearance from the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting for its satellite transfer request.

Focus News is currently situated on Measat which makes it cumbersome while dealing with cable operators as it has to give a dish and IRD box for every operator. It is looking at shifting to Intelsat.

Once the new satellite is confirmed, it will be available on cable platforms as well. Post getting its distribution fixed, the channel will embark on a marketing plan in the Hindi speaking markets. Sanan is aware that the channel so far has kept itself low on distribution with only a limited presence on the DTH platforms. Therefore the logo change will be noticed by most.

“We are creating a brand for the future,” he concludes.

  • JAINHITS reaches out to LCOs from HP, Punjab & Haryana

JAINHITS reaches out to LCOs from HP, Punjab & Haryana

NEW DELHI: More than 150 local cable operators (LCOs) from Himachal Pradesh, Haryana and Punjab attended a tri-state business meet organised by JAINHITS in Simla. The meeting aimed at explaining to the LCOs, the working of the satellite based solution for digitisation of cable services.

Earlier this year, JAINHITS had also organised a similar meet in Andhra Pradesh which was attended by around 625 LCOs.

At the meet, senior members of JAINHITS briefed cable operators about its services and offerings. The HITS player also provided cost effective solutions to LCOs for running fully DAS compliant digital cable TV services. During this interactive meet, the LCOs were interested to know more on the entire spectrum of consumer products and services that will be provided by JAINHITS such as high speed, cloud and hybrid broadband TV (HBB TV).

While the number of channels being offered by the company stands at 250 including all major pay TV, JAINHITS will soon roll out its full HD and multi-screen services for consumers. The key proposition of the HITS platform is its cost-effective investment for cable operators which stands at a minimum of only Rs 25,000 per month. With this, they expect to do business with 400 plus partners and install over 3000 Mini Downlink Headend’s across 640 districts of India by the end of 2014.

Cable Operators Federation of India (COFI) president Roop Sharma expressed surprise at the overwhelming response. She said JAINHITS provides instant digitisation solution to cable operators with minimal investments and thus stands to play a pivotal role in the digitisation of all analogue networks with its triple play offering of video, voice and data. “Not only do they possess the content but have managed to attain all necessary approvals required for supplying cable TV and broadband to consumers,” Sharma said.

JAINHITS national sales head Jeet Narayan Singh said, “We believe that conducting these joint meetings in key cities and states across the country is of great significance. It is these sub urban regions that need to be tapped and facilitated with superior TV products and services. In our business, we have always stressed upon converting these cable operators into a ‘Leader & Cable Owner’ and an independent service entity. We feel that this approach creates room for greater involvement thereby increasing their participation in the entire digitisation process. If we are able to maintain this kind of momentum, we would soon be looking at serving half million subscriber base each in Himachal Pradesh, Punjab and Haryana.”

Gem Enterprises partner Surinder Surya said, “One of the key propositions that allows cable operators to retain business control and simultaneously magnify its growth, is the HITS players’ instant zero capital solution for digitisation. Not only this, JAINHITS stands apart from any competition as it is the only and ideal choice to experience uninterrupted services in regions with severe climatic conditions.”

JAINHITS has partnered with some of the leading technology outfits such as Motorola (now ARRIS) and Intelsat – as its satellite partner. The key proposition of the JAINHITS platform is centered around the conversion of LCO to MSO with minimum cost while providing all end to end solutions for digital cable and broadband services.

  • ETV News Himachal/Haryana to launch on 26 March

ETV News Himachal/Haryana to launch on 26 March

MUMBAI: Ramoji Rao founded ETV group that is now under Network18 has got one more launch up its sleeve targeting the northern states of Himachal Pradesh and Haryana. Come 26 March, the group will launch its regional Hindi news channel, ETV News Himachal Pradesh/Haryana.

Targeted at the age group 15+ SEC ABC, the channel will help the ETV group expand into markets beyond Delhi. To tap into viewership, the launch has been timed ahead of the Lok Sabha elections, just like the recently launched Bangla and Kannada ETV news channels. The 24X7 channel will cover 80 per cent news from the two states and the remaining 20 per cent from the rest of the nation. The news stories will encompass politics, sports, culture and crime.

With 10 reporters, 20 stringers and 10 desk editors currently on-board, ETV News Himachal Pradesh/Haryana will broadcast from its Hyderabad studio for now offering only studio based shows and later move to Chandigarh after the polls with a corresponding bureau in Simla to provide full fledged news bulletins and live coverage. “Haryana is a big market. Real estate and other industries are growing day-by-day. In Himachal Pradesh, information about a lot of government schemes does not reach the common people. This channel can be a bridge between the government and the common people. Revenue can also be generated through this mechanism,” says ETV group editor Rajesh Raina. According to sources in the know, the channel has made an investment of nearly Rs 15 crore and is looking to break even in two years’ time.

  • CREDAI-NCR forms five sub-chapters for speedy resolve of buyers’ complaints

CREDAI-NCR forms five sub-chapters for speedy resolve of buyers’ complaints

NEW DELHI: To facilitate quicker redressal of buyer’s complaints, the NCR body of Confederation of Real Estate Developers Association of India (CREDAI-NCR) recently formed five sub-chapters.
All the complaints of buyers pertaining to member developers will be handled centrally by CREDAI NCR in support and coordination with respective sub-chapters. This will help in reducing the backlog at parent body resulting in lesser time in resolving the issues of buyers.
Covering different regions of Delhi-NCR, these sub-chapters will continue prefixing name of CREDAI NCR and will be called CREDAI NCR (Delhi), CREDAI NCR (Haryana), CREDAI NCR (Western UP), CREDAI NCR (Raj Nagar Extension) and CREDAI NCR (Bhiwadi). As the name suggest, these sub-chapters will cover the member developers/builders in their respective areas and will operate under the umbrella of CREDAI NCR.

Each sub-chapter will cover the area earmarked under NCR region only. For example, CREDAI NCR (Haryana) will cover only the part of Haryana falling under NCR region.
Although, certain sub-chapters were operating from some time, yet the developers preferred joining CREDAI-NCR directly.  To address this, a system has been put in place that no developer will become direct member of CREDAI NCR except the ones who are having their real estate project in Delhi. Also the present members will be transferred to respective sub-chapters based on their area of operation but by default each and every member will be known as member of CREDAI NCR.
The Consumer Grievance Redressal Forum which was specially set up to deal with buyer’s complaints, has resolved 868 complaints out of 972 filed so far.
Explaining the rationale behind this step, Dr. Anil Kumar Sharma, President, CREDAI-NCR says, “The decision to delegate the responsibilities to sub-chapters is a futuristic move. It will decentralize the workload on the Consumer Grievance Redressal Forum, ensuring quicker disposal of buyers’ complaints.”

  • DAS Phase II: Analogue signals switched-off in 5 states

DAS Phase II: Analogue signals switched-off in 5 states

NEW DELHI: Analogue signals have been completely switched-off in five states of Maharashtra, Punjab, Rajasthan, West Bengal, Haryana and the Union Territory of Chandigarh, according to information provided by nodal officers to the Information & Broadcasting (I&B) ministry.

The ministry said it is in constant touch with the Nodal Officers and MSOs to ensure that the cities in remaining states also speed up the process of digitisation.

However, analogue signal continues un-interrupted in the eight cities of Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, and Gujarat that are covered under DAS Phase II as the respective High Courts have passed orders against switching off analogue signals.

In addition, stay continues in Chennai which was part of the DAS Phase I covering four metros which also included Mumbai, Delhi and Kolkata.

Sharing the latest figures about DAS implementation in 38 cities covered under Phase II, the ministry claims that over 85 per cent digitisation have been achieved so far.

Out of the 38 cities, fifteen cities have achieved nearly 100 per cent digitisation, 24 cities in all have achieved more than 75 per cent digitisation, and 34 cities have achieved more than 50 per cent digitisation.

The review by I&B ministry also reveals that as against a target of 16 million STBs, 13.6 million have already been installed by the MSOs and DTH operators.

Of these, the total number of installed Cable TV STBs is 9.15 million while DTH operators have installed a total of 4.45 million STBs. In the last one month alone about four million STBs have been installed in the Phase II cities.

The I&B ministry has meanwhile cautioned multi-system operators (MSOs) to implement digitisation in a ‘sensitive manner‘ so as to avoid causing inconvenience to consumers.

The ministry stated that the objective of the entire exercise is to implement the process in a seamless, sustained yet sensitive manner that causes least amount of disruption to the consumer.

Wherever necessary the process has been implemented in a circumspect way so as to ensure that consumers can get access to STBs, I&B ministry said.

Separately, Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) has also been convening the meeting of broadcasters, MSOs and cable operators to sort out issues pertaining to agreements and service conditions.

The ministry said that digitisation would usher in a new era in broadcasting sector reforms by bringing more transparency in the subscriber base and would lead to several benefits for stakeholders including government.

It would bring in enhanced revenue by way of improved tax recovery for government, enhanced TV viewing experience due to digital picture quality and multiple choices of channels to subscribers and improved subscription revenue for broadcasters and cable industry.

The ministry has also assured cable operators that digital addressable system (DAS) will provide them an opportunity to provide competitive services to their subscribers and help them retain their business in the wake of competition from DTH and other platforms.
