MUMBAI: After collecting $ 1.14 billion globally including a domestic haul of $343. 1 million, Warner Bros.’ Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 has surpassed The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King to become the third-highest-grossing film of all time at the worldwide box office.

In terms of global records, Return of the King, released in 2003, grossed $1.12 worldwide ($377 million at the domestic box office and $791.1 million overseas).

The film is days away from overtaking Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides ($798.1 million) to become the No. 1 international title of the year. It should register itself at the No. 3 spot as there is little chance that it will rise any further and overtake Avatar ($2.8 billion) or Titanic ($1.8 billion), the No. 1 and No. 2 films, respectively.

But that doesn’t mean that Deathly Hallows has run its course, particularly overseas, where it grossed $63.1 million over the 5 to 7 August period to top the box office for a fourth consecutive weekend. The total includes a $26.5 million opening in China.

MUMBAI: Grossing 466.4 million from 15,400 cinema halls in 59 markets, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2 coasted to the weekend’s No. 1 box office slot averaging about $17,000 per day over the last week on the foreign theatrical circuit.

After reigning at the top box office spot for the third consecutive weekend, the film now ranks as the highest grossing title ever released overseas by Warner Bros.

On the overseas circuit, the eighth installment accumulated box office collections of $690 million offshore in 19 days of foreign release. Globally, the tally exceeds the $1 billion gross mark more than doubles the films domestic take of $318.5 million.

In comparison, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 has become part of the elite billion dollar club while Paramount‘s Transformers: Dark of the Moon promises to become one within days.

The billion dollar winner films are Avatar, Titanic, The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man‘s Chest, Toy Story 3, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, Alice in Wonderland, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 and The Dark Knight.

Before this summer, only seven movies in history had grossed $1 billion or more at the domestic box office. Now there are nine, between Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides and Deathly Hallows 2, the first film in the franchise to reach the milestone. Dark of the Moon will make it ten.

Hollywood films set to return to Indonesia

MUMBAI: After a five-month drought caused by a standoff over the country‘s tax on imported films, Hollywood films are set to return to Indonesian screens, with the final Harry Potter.

“Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 is being imported by a newly established local company and will be released before Ramadan, the Islamic fasting month that begins on 1 August,” said Djonny Sjafruddin, head of the Indonesian Cinema Companies Union.

The debut of Harry Potter and the other movies is made possible by the recent establishment of a new film importer, PT Omega Film, Sjarifuddin revealed. He however declined to give an exact release date.

“All things such as censorship and subtitles have already been finished,” Sjafruddin said. “We need some 90 copies and they are now under process.”

He also announced that Transformers 3 and Kung Fu Panda 2 would be released in the next few weeks.

The announcement signals relief for moviegoers forced for months to make do with local productions and second-tier foreign releases because of the protracted dispute between studios, film importers and the government.

In February, six major Hollywood studios withdrew films from Indonesia, a Muslim-majority nation of 237 million people, in opposition to a new levy on imported movies that was meant to protect local filmmakers.

Last month the government announced a revised tax it said would bring back Hollywood movies, but their return had been blocked by another dispute.

Technically, Captain America becomes the highest grossing superhero film this summer by narrowly beating the $65.7 debut of Thor.
