YouTube adds Nykaa and Purplle to shopping affiliate programme as beauty commerce booms

MU7MBAI: YouTube is turning beauty tutorials into storefronts. The video platform has added Nykaa and Purplle to its shopping affiliate programme, expanding creators’ ability to monetise content as shopping-related watch time in India jumps 250 per cent year-on-year.

The move doubles down on beauty and lifestyle, a category where 89 per cent of Indian shoppers say YouTube helps them make confident purchase decisions. Creators enrolled in the programme can now tag products from Nykaa and Purplle alongside existing partners Flipkart and Myntra, earning commissions when viewers buy.

More than 40 per cent of eligible creators in India have signed up since the programme launched a year ago, tagging products in over three million videos. Over 200 million logged-in users in India have made shopping-related searches on YouTube, creating what the platform calls a “complete monetisation ecosystem”.

“The next era of video commerce is already being defined by India’s vibrant creator economy on YouTube,” says YouTube India managing director Gunjan Soni. “We are scaling content-driven shopping from a successful programme to a complete monetisation ecosystem.”

YouTube is sweetening the deal with artificial intelligence tools that automatically tag products the moment they’re mentioned in videos, capturing viewer interest at its peak. The platform will also test automatic product identification later this year.

Flipkart vice president of growth and marketing Pratik Arun Shetty, frames the partnership as commerce meeting creativity. “India’s creator economy is transforming how people engage with brands,” he says. Myntra reports creator collaborations have grown threefold in the past year, whilst Nykaa positions itself as a pioneer in content-led commerce.

YouTube is also rolling out tools to make brand deals more lucrative: a flexible format for inserting and replacing sponsored segments, links to brand sites in Shorts, and a Creator Partnerships Hub inside Google Ads to connect advertisers with influencers.

It’s a bet that authenticity converts. Whether creators cash in or merely chase clicks will depend on whether viewers trust recommendations—or just skip to the comments.

  • Aamir Khan takes ‘Sitaare Zameen Par’ straight to YouTube in a first-of-its-kind digital premiere

Aamir Khan takes ‘Sitaare Zameen Par’ straight to YouTube in a first-of-its-kind digital premiere

MUMBAI: Aamir Khan is ripping up the rulebook. In a landmark move, the actor-producer is releasing his blockbuster Sitaare Zameen Par directly on YouTube Movies-on-Demand from 1 August 2025, bypassing traditional OTT platforms and putting premium cinema within reach of every household.

Actor-producer Aamir Khan stated, “For the past 15 years I have been struggling with the challenge of how to reach audiences who do not have geographical access to theatres, or those who are unable to make it to theatres for various reasons. Finally the time for the perfect storm has come. With our government bringing in UPI and India becoming no 1 in the world in electronic payments, with internet penetration in India having grown dramatically and growing everyday, and with YouTube being on most devices, we can finally reach vast sections of people in India, and a significant part of the world. My dream is that Cinema should reach everyone at a reasonable and affordable price. I want people to have the ease of watching Cinema when they want, where they want. If this idea works, Creative voices can tell different stories breaking geographical and other barriers. This will also be a great opportunity for younger creative people entering the field of Cinema. If this idea works, then I see this as a win-win for all.”

YouTube India country managing director, Gunjan Soni highlighted the strategic significance of this partnership. “The digital launch of Sitaare Zameen Par exclusively on YouTube underscores a significant step towards democratizing Indian film distribution at a global scale. YouTube is already a key digital destination for premium content, and we’re excited to offer filmmakers and content owners not only our unparalleled digital reach but also the control and flexibility to meet their audiences where they are. Today’s launch is far more than a release – YouTube is laying out the red carpet for Indian cinema to stride onto the global stage.”

The film, which has already grossed over Rs 250 crore worldwide, will be available in India for Rs 100 and in 38 international markets including the US, UK, Australia, Germany and Singapore, with localised pricing and subtitles.

A spiritual successor to his 2007 classic Taare Zameen Par, the heartwarming drama stars Aamir Khan, Genelia Deshmukh and ten actors with intellectual disabilities, making inclusivity its emotional core.

This YouTube-first strategy is a radical experiment that not only turns every screen into a theatre but also cements YouTube’s growing clout in post-theatrical film distribution. With YouTube already reaching 4 out of 5 internet users in India, this could reshape how films find their audiences.

Directed by RS Prasanna and written by Divy Nidhi Sharma, the film will also be available in dubbed and subtitled versions for global audiences. Next up for Aamir Khan Productions: Lahore 1947 starring Sunny Deol and Preity Zinta, and Ek Din featuring Junaid Khan and Sai Pallavi.

Cinema, it seems, just found its biggest digital stage.

YouTube India taps Gunjan Soni to drive next phase of growth

MUMBAI: YouTube has picked a heavyweight to steer its India ambitions. Gunjan Soni, the former Zalora chief executive and Myntra marketing whiz, has been named country managing director, YouTube India — in a move that underlines the platform’s laser focus on India’s booming creator economy.

Announcing the appointment, YouTube Asia Pacific vice-president and managing director Gautam Anand  hailed India as one of YouTube’s “most vibrant and crucial markets”, adding that Soni’s arrival signals an even stronger commitment to creators, users, and India’s digital future.

With over two decades of leadership experience across e-commerce, tech, consulting, and media, Soni brings heavyweight credentials. Her CV reads like a greatest hits album: she led the turnaround of Jabong under Myntra, turbocharged Zalora’s regional expansion in southeast Asia, helped launch Hotstar at Star India, and pioneered data-led marketing at McKinsey.

In her own words, the goal is to “unlock intuitive, innovative formats” that empower Indian storytellers — from school kids shooting shorts to grandparents binge-watching devotional channels.

“As a family of enthusiastic YouTube users ourselves — from my seven-year-old nephew to my 70-something mother — I’m truly excited to lead a platform that touches lives across generations,” said Soni in a spirited note to the community.

Big Brand Sale (BBS) is Jabong’s marquee bi-annual property that is held in January and July to mark the end of the ongoing season.

As a part of its 360 degree campaign, Jabong released an #OutOfTheWorld themed 30 sec TVC, which is set in a parallel universe and captures the essence of BBS where the World’s Biggest Brands are available at discounts. During BBS, Jabong is offering four lakh styles from premium, international and Indian brands at 55-80 per cent discount, out of which over one lac styles are for the first time on 50 per cent + discounts and more than 15,000 styles are available at above 80 per cent discount.

The TVC highlights the Jabong consumers who are free from worldly notions of fashion and have their own unique style and identity, staying true to Jabong’s brand philosophy- Be You. Set against a vast, celestial backdrop and a flickering panorama of space, the TVC beautifully uses spatial objects like stars, satellites and shooting stars to creatively bring alive the ‘out-of-the-world’ experience that the Big Brand Sale promises, in terms of, both, products and discounts.

Conceptualised and scripted by Happy Mcgarrybowen, the creative agency from Dentsu Aegis Network, the TV commercial will be aired across leading channels, GEC, English and Hindi movies, English entertainment, news, lifestyle and music genres. The television commercials will also run in five-second stings across select channels to drive frequency and reach. In addition, the campaign also covers print, radio, outdoor, DTH (Tata Sky) and digital-YouTube, Facebook, Wynk and Truecaller, with OOH across eight cities. The TVC, set in a spatial backdrop, depicts the Jabong promise to offer an out of the world shopping experience to its customers this BBS. It’s a first-of-its-kind approach to creatively capture the brand essence and highlight the key sale callouts, which we believe will resonate very strongly with our consumers.”

Happy mcgarrybowen CEO Kartik Iyer mentions, “In a typical situation this would be another opportunity to do another sale ad. But this is Jabong and the team seems to just push the experience of every piece of communication, every single time. A fresh take on what to expect and the excitement around it makes up the experience to be totally out of this world. All credit to the collaboration between client agency and director.”

  • Roadster rides a new campaign, to stimulate passion

Roadster rides a new campaign, to stimulate passion

MUMBAI: Roadster, a casual outdoorsy lifestyle brand in India, launched a brand campaign – The Road is Waiting.

The integrated campaign reinforces the brand’s promise as a trusted highway companion for the young and restless. The commercial, created for TV and digital, is a rallying cry to explore the road and it’s multitude of experiences, drawing straight from the brand’s signature state of constant transit.

The commercial introduces viewers to “the gap in the world”, a special place in the world outside that waits to be claimed by you and me – those guilty of being caught up in the hustle of everyday life. This space is full of stories and experiences that is forever reserved for its intended owner. The underlying brand message is simple; that the highway life is incomplete without those who live through it and with this campaign; Roadster looks to call out to the viewer, egging them to find this gap and fill it.

The film treatment feeds into the spirit of an open invitation – from the different, youthful voices in the narrative, to the protagonists breaking the fourth wall to acknowledge the viewer as they consume the experiences on screen and not in person. The messaging speaks of Roadsters making experiences happen for them, as against simply being at the right places at the right time.

It’s worth noting that the film was shot entirely in India – a call the brand has taken thus far for every campaign, so that the depicted experiences are within easy reach for the Indian viewer. This sentiment of accessibility has always been close to the brand’s heart and reflected in the campaign’s social media legs.

The previously male-centric and individualistic brand persona has also grown to include those who identify better with group experiences, not to mention a growing focus on female roadsters that has made Roadster, the largest selling brand on Myntra.

Myntra CMO and Jabong head Gunjan Soni said, “Roadster has created a unique positioning in its own right and emerged a winner. This campaign, while focusing on the brand story, also focuses on the brand’s product offerings.”

Myntra Fashion Brands chief Manohar Kamath said, “The new campaign beckons the viewers hoping to entice them and make them enthusiastic to go on a journey themselves. We have strategically looked at ensuring the brand message and its product offering comes through effectively by using diverse set of mediums including TVC, OOH and Digital.”

Roadster is known for its innovative campaigns from the past such as the GTFO (Get The F*** Out) campaign with actor Ranveer Singh and the ‘PocketMan’ campaign – a live human experiment to interactively demonstrate how a person could live entirely out of their jeans for 48 hours.
