    ‘Kill/Dil’… Will too

MUMBAI: The stories of orphan children turning into juvenile delinquents who then graduate to hard core criminals have become rather commonplace. One of YRF’s own recent films, Gunday, is one such example. Here is another.

Govinda, a don of some sort whose main business is to accept supari killing contracts, finds two tiny tots in a garbage bin. The boys grow up into Ranveer Singh and Ali Zafar. The boys get into petty crimes as soon as they learn to stand on their two feet. They are invincible. Nobody ever catches them or hits back. Soon they also become bullet proof as they take to guns becoming Govinda’s main shooters.

When they are not shooting down people out of the blue, they also have lot of fun. After all, they have never let Govinda down and he, on his part, has been generous with them. And, between the assignments they have nothing to do except spend that money.

Their home is Delhi and soon the Delhi culture brings them, especially Singh, face to face with his future romance, Parineeti Chopra. At this pub, the duo of Zafar and Singh are guzzling their alcohol when on the dance floor, someone makes a pass at Parineeti who in turn tells him off. The lad pulls a gun on Parineeti giving Singh a chance to save her and drive the villain off.

    Producer: Aditya Chopra.

    Director: Shaad Ali.

Cast: Ranveer Singh, Ali Zafar, Parineeti Chopra, Govinda.

Romance blossoms between Singh and Parineeti, which Singh knows Govinda won’t approve of. To add to that, for the first time ever, Singh fails to shoot a person he has been assigned to eliminate. While Govinda is livid, Singh’s conscience has caught up with him. He wants to change his ways and lead an honest life to be worthy of Parineeti. For her part, Parineeti has herself given up a career where she could have made enough money to instead take up the challenge of helping ex-convicts settle into a normal life away from crime. He even starts selling insurance policies. Unaware of Singh’s background, this is one more criminal she is helping turn honest.

When Govinda is sure Singh is now out of his control, he plays a double game. He asks one of his men to kill Singh while he warns Zafar what is about to happen and also tells Parineeti how she will soon know what Singh’s past is.

Having found out about Singh, Parineeti now does not want anything to do with him. On his part, Govinda’s purpose has been served as Singh returns to the fold and is ready for his next assignment. But, with Parineeti on his mind, Singh draws his gun but does not manage to fire, giving his victim the chance to shoot at him and receiving a bullet in his back for his efforts.

However, not having got a chance to tell his story to Parineeti, Singh has made a disc of his life story and sent it to Parineeti who sobs as she watches it and wants Singh back.

Kill/Dil has a weak plot and shoddy script which starts bad and goes on deteriorating as it progresses. By the second half, it is a mess. Direction is lacklustre. Musically, this 127-minute film is crowded with nine songs, probably to make up for lack of content. Photography is not up to the mark. Performance wise, Govinda is good while Zafar is passable. Singh looks funny in his clean-shaven look sans moustache; there is nothing different about his acting from other films. Parineeti’s role is ill-defined.

Kill/Dil, trying to be a thriller, a romance, and a comedy and fails to deliver on all fronts.

Set against the backdrop of the partition of Bangladesh from India in the 1970s, Gunday tracks the story of two Bangladeshi refugees Bikram (Ranveer Singh) and Bala (Arjun Kapoor) who arrive in Kolkata to escape the paedophilic industry. From stealing coal from trains as children to becoming the biggest coal mafia in Calcutta, they turn into the quintessential ‘Gunday’ who undertake a lot of charity work on the side.

On finding filming in the fish market a challenge, Priyanka Chopra says, “The fish market really distracted me. Such a bad smell! I thought I would throw up after every five minutes. It was a distraction as there’s nothing you can do about your olfactory senses. It was horrible.”

On being paired opposite his costar Priyanka Chopra for the first time, Ranveer Singh says, “She is actor-friendly, director-friendly, and producer-friendly. She makes everyone’s task easier by tapping-in her experience. She is a one-take artist.”

  • Reliance MediaWorks completes another collaboration with YRF with ‘Gunday’

Reliance MediaWorks completes another collaboration with YRF with ‘Gunday’

MUMBAI: Reliance MediaWorks today announced its successful collaboration with Yash Raj Films for their recently released blockbuster Gunday. The media and techno-creative solutions provider was behind the recreation of the fiery 70’s of Kolkata – in all its glory and has crafted more than 500 VFX shots for the film.

The train chase sequence is one of the most complex and difficult sequences in the film. This sequence alone has 160 VFX shots. The RMW team took extreme close-ups, close-ups of wheels braking, squealing etc. to make the effects look real. This sequence is a crucial one, setting the tone for the film with its thugs, stark landscape and acts of heroism.

Another difficult sequence is the blast in the mines, where the entire hill had to be created through VFX. The Reliance MediaWorks team worked in tandem with the film’s unit and the VFX work progressed simultaneously with the shoot, so the turnaround time was less, efficiency was higher and the consistency in the integration of the VFX was greater.

Ali Abbas Zafar, Director, Gunday said, “Gunday involved the creation of a rustic old world charm set in the bustling city of Kolkata. It thus involved immense creative visualization. It was a good experience working with the VFX team at Reliance MediaWorks.“

Aashish Singh, VP –Production, YRF said, “This project involved complex VFX and creative craftsmanship with a short delivery period. We chose Reliance MediaWorks because it could handle those complexities and still deliver exceptional control and quality.”

Mr. Venkatesh Roddam, CEO Reliance MediaWorks said “At Reliance MediaWorks, we strive constantly to raise the bar and endeavor to provide a realistic experience to the audience.”

Naveen Paul, Creative Head, Reliance MediaWorks said, “The scope of work for Gunday involved the creation of a whole era and provided an opportunity for us to showcase our diverse skills. Working closely with Ali Abbas Zafar ensured delivery of exactly what the Yash Raj Films team was looking for.”

  • ‘Queen’ continues its dream run in wk 2 at BO

‘Queen’ continues its dream run in wk 2 at BO

MUMBAI: YRF’s Bewakoofiyaan has not been appreciated as the film lacks chemistry between the lead pair and music doesn’t add much flavour either. The film opened with little over Rs 2 crore and floated between that and Rs 2.5 crore over its four day weekend. The film put together Rs 9.37 crore over four days.

Queen is holding on strongly, a rare film in ages, which has collected more on its seventh day than its opening Friday. The film collected Rs 18.5 crore for its first week. As the film continues to do well in its second week, it can be termed a minor hit.

Gulaab Gang, an ordinary run of the mill honesty vs corrupt politician (both protagonists being woman is what the film expected to cash in on) has been rejected outright. The film could add little to its opening weekend collections to end the first week with Rs 10.2 crore.

Total Siyapaa is fairing very poorly. The film collected Rs 5.85 crore in its first week and will prove to be a loser.

Shaadi Ke Side Effects managed to stay above par in its second week adding Rs 4.85 crore taking its two week total to Rs 35.05 crore.

Gunday has collected Rs 35 lakh in its fifth week taking its five week tally to Rs 78.45 crore.

  • Bewakoofiyaan: The title says it all

Bewakoofiyaan: The title says it all

MUMBAI: Bewakoofiyaan is another Yash Raj Films production, after Gunday, that invests in newer, younger stars. As the stars in these films grow in stature and following, so does the shelf value of these films. Since such films are made with a tight control on the budget and are backed by the same marketing machine that the company’s major films get, YRF is usually safe with the ventures even if a certain film does not make it at the box office.

Bewakoofiyaan is a romantic comedy in that Ayushmann Khurrana and Sonam Kapoor love each other. When Khurrana is promoted to the post of senior executive at the airline where he works, he celebrates by acquiring a car to replace his bike. Sonam’s talent lies in finance and she works for a bank. They have been dating for two years and now that Khurrana has been promoted, it is time to take him to her father, Rishi Kapoor.

Rishi is a freshly retired IAS officer whose grouse is that he never got a decent posting in his career. He has his own set ideas about what kind of man his daughter should marry and has made a dossier of suitors for her of guys who have minimum income of 25 crore!  The first hurdle Khurrana faces is that he earns about 10% less than Sonam and that makes him totally not suitable according to Rishi. After that, everything about Khurrana is a negative as far as Rishi is concerned. However, since Sonam is determined to marry Khurrana, Rishi sets terms and a timeframe for him to prove himself suitable to be his son in law.

    Producer: Aditya Chopra.

    Director: Nupur Asthana.

Cast: Rishi Kapoor, Aushmann Khurana, Sonam Kapoor.

Every day is a test now for Khurrana. Tutored by Sonam on how to deal with Rishi, he lets Rishi have his way, even letting him win in a game of squash. That is when the worst happens. Khurrana’s airline sacks 1200 employees and he is one of them. The logic behind sacking a just promoted executive is that, in his salary, the company can afford three freshers! Confident that he will land another job in matter of time, Khurrana survives on his credit card for a while until he reaches his three lakh credit limit which, as luck would have it, happens when he has asked Rishi out for lunch.

Khurrana now depends on Sonam for his house rent, car installment, fuel, pocket money and everything else. Yet, no job is forthcoming. Those which are coming are not to his liking. There is bound to be pressure on the relationship. While he is scoring brownie points with Rishi, somewhere along the way, his romance is on test.

The problem with Bewakoofiyaan is that, it is not a romance in the making which, since centuries, is exciting to watch. The script has too many contradictions, more so in Rishi’s character.  The music, which is a must in any Indian film but essential in a romantic film, is a total let down with the lyrics making no sense. Dialogue is uninspiring. Again, something that a romantic film needs is solid chemistry between its lead characters and here there is none of that between Sonam and Khurrana. Both fall short in performances as well. The one who gets around comfortably is Rishi, but then, he is a veteran.

While the film sags throughout, it becomes a little watchable only during last 20 minutes or so. Even this long weekend will not help Bewakoofiyan much at the box office.

  • Word of mouth improves Queen’s weekend collection

Word of mouth improves Queen’s weekend collection

MUMBAI: Much was expected from the Madhuri- Juhi starrer Gulaab Gang but the film turned out to be just another good vs evil story where women do the stunts otherwise done by guys. The film was below average during its opening weekend and will only go down further as the week progresses. The film managed to collect Rs 7.1 crore during its first weekend as the word spread about poor content.

Total Siyapaa, starring Ali Zafar and Yami Gautam, is rejected outright and may face discontinuation from many cinemas mid-week. The film collected just about Rs 3.5 crore in its opening weekend.

Queen has been appreciated as a lighthearted fun film about a ‘ditched at the mandap’ girl who decides to explore the places alone which, she would have otherwise been to with her husband. The film has grown each day during the weekend and is expected to do steady business as the week progresses. Though the opening day collections of the film were low – with positive word of mouth – the collections doubled on Saturday and improved by a huge margin on Sunday. The film’s weekend collection stood at Rs 10.15 crore.

Shaadi Ke Side Effects bringing together the pair of Farhan Akhtar and Vidya Balan struggles through its first week to collect Rs 30.2 crore. The film has drawn much flak from the viewers.

Gunday has added about Rs 2 crore in its third week to take its four week total to Rs 78.4 crore.

Hasee Toh Phasee has collected Rs 40 lakh in its fourth week taking its four week total to Rs 35.5 crore.

  • Shaadi Ke Side Effects collects Rs 20.2 crore

Shaadi Ke Side Effects collects Rs 20.2 crore

MUMBAI: Shaadi Ke Side Effects met with poor response on Friday. The collections improved on Saturday and Sunday, an advantage which is not expected to spill over in the new week beginning today as the film finds no appreciation. Whatever patronage the film found was at few multiplexes in West and North with single screens rejecting the film. The film registered a figure of Rs 20.2 crore for the first weekend.

Darr @ The Mall fails to find favour with moviegoers and has a poor Rs 5.1 crore to show for its first seven day run.

Gulabi Gang (Documentary) released theatrical has found much appreciation which, sadly, did not reflect on its box office collections.

Gunday from the Yash Raj stable has sustained well to add Rs 12.2 crore in its second week to take its two week total to Rs 75.3 crore.

Hasee Toh Phasee has added Rs 2.05 crore in its third week to take its three week total to Rs 35.1 crore.

In the week to come, March 7th, as many as three films are lined up for release out of which two, Gulaab Gang and Queen, are female oriented. While the third one, Total Siyapaa, looks more like a youth oriented romantic comedy. More than from each other, the main challenge to these films come from exam season.

  • Gunday continues its strong run at the box-office

Gunday continues its strong run at the box-office

MUMBAI: Last week saw two films of different genres release. Darr @ The Mall a direct lift of a Hollywood flick from 1989 and Highway, a road movie. While, Darr @ The Mall is a total reject, Highway, also not creating a fad, is a little better. In which case, last week’s solo release, Gunday has reaped the benefit.

Darr @ The Mall has fared poorly with its day to day collections barely touching a crore mark. The film collected Rs 3.2 crore for its opening weekend.

Highway, banking on Sajid Nadiadwala’s banner and director Imtiaz Ali’s past record, fared a shade better. The film collected Rs 12.7 crore over its opening weekend with the Sunday collections showing a decent growth.  The film’s 75 per cent business came from Delhi-NCR-Punjab and Mumbai. But, that is not enough to slot the film as an earner with as much as Rs 30 crore incurred for the release of the film.

Gunday proves once again that films on male bonding, friendships don’t usually fail. With an excellent weekend of Rs 43.93 crore, the film ended its first week run with a healthy Rs 63.1 crore adding another Rs 8.15 crore for the second weekend taking its ten day total to Rs 71.24 crore. Both, Ranveer Singh and Arjun Kapoor have consolidated their positions in the industry.

Hasee Toh Phasee has had a decent second week, its average merits notwithstanding. The credit goes to Parineeti Chopra whose performance is being appreciated by all. The film has added Rs 7.7 crore in its second week, taking its two week total to Rs 33.05 crore.

Jai Ho has not managed to do much business at the end of it fourth week with collections of Rs 45 lakh and a four week total of Rs 105.35 crore. It has not lived up to its expectations as other Salman Khan blockbusters in recent history.

Note: An Rs 100 crore grosser is not necessarily a hit because the take home amount is less than 50 per cent of that amount with over half going towards the theatre’s share and a part of it to the distribution expenses.

  • Solo release ‘Gunday’ makes the most at BO

Solo release ‘Gunday’ makes the most at BO

MUMBAI: Gunday made the most of its combination of two young heroes with growing popularity, its music and Valentine’s Day release date to take a bumper Friday at the box office with a figure of 16.12 crore. Being a solo release also helped. The box office levelled out on Saturday with 12.63, rising again on Sunday to 15.18. The first weekend tally of 43.93 already qualifies the film as another hit for Yash Raj Films.

Hasee Toh Phasee with a weekend of 15.75 crore remained steady on the lower side during the week to collect 25.35 in its first week.

Of the three other releases, Babloo Happy Hai, Ya Rab and Heartless, only the last one managed to reach near one crore mark.

Jai Ho added 3.7 crore in its third week taking its three week total to 104.9 crore.

Yaariyan, coming to the end of its run, added 30 lakh in the fifth week to take its five week tally to 32.95 crore.

Dedh Ishqiya has added 30 lakh in its fifth week to take its five week tally to 26.25 crore.
