Bullet Raja takes the comic route

MUMBAI: He is a big comic book buff and it was just apt to launch one before the release of Chote Nawab’s upcoming release Bullet Raja. Interestingly, after the marketing team of Bullet Raja launched a graphic novel series built around the protagonist of the film in the digital space, Saif Ali Khan suggested the launch of a comic book as well.

The idea was soon worked upon and the film’s team finally launched the comic book titled The Legend of Bullett Raja recently. The event was a high-octane affair with almost the entire team including Saif Ali Khan, Sonakshi Sinha, Jimmy Shergill, Tigmanshu Dhulia, Ravi Kissen, Gulshan Grover, Chunkey Pandey among others present at the event.

The lead actors of the film entertained the audiences as they broke in to impromptu jigs as soon as the songs of the film started playing.

Besides the comic book, the audiences were also introduced to highly entertaining and exciting dialogues from the film.

A ‘Sooper se Ooper’ launch of Jigsaw Pictures into feature films

MUMBAI: Having produced over 150 television commercials, music videos and even a critically acclaimed short film, The Fall (starring Rahul Bose), production house Jigsaw Pictures is now venturing into feature films with their first commercial film Sooper Se Ooper. This quirky drama with Vir Das in lead has been co produced with Reliance Entertainment and is scheduled to come to theatres across India on 25 October, 2013.

Jigsaw Pictures CEO and creative producer Rajnish Lall has had over nine years of experience in advertising, having worked in Clarion, Contract & Bates and thereafter headed the marketing division at B4U shortly after. He then founded Jigsaw Pictures about eight years ago and will debut as a creative producer and the line producer of Sooper se Ooper. He is among a few who is comfortably straddling the productions both in the TV commercials and feature films.

On his first production, Rajnish said, “Working on this film was like taking a fresh guard in the field of production… it has been an amazing, exciting and rich experience in the last two years. From fine tuning the script, putting together the right cast and technical team of my choice, the extensive shoot in Rajasthan and Mumbai to production of lovely songs all within a modest budget has been a Sooper se Ooper experience! In this journey we had the support and guidance of a big studio like Reliance Entertainment.”

The movie Sooper se Ooper is based on an Indian superstition ‘that making a will (legal document) is an indication that that your time has come near’. The story revolves around the character of Vir Das, whose fortune has dwindled and selling his ancestral property may just be the way out of the situation but he runs into a problem as the ancestral land was not will-ed to him by his parents. Filmed in Rajasthan and Mumbai, the story takes an interesting and entertaining turn during the journey from village to city and vice-versa.

The film stars Vir Das, Gulshan Grover, Deepak Dobriyal, Kirti Kulhari and Yashpal Sharma, among others. The music has been composed by Sonu Niigam and Bickram Ghosh who debut as a music duo in Hindi films and has quirky fusion BGM from Ranjit Barot. The director, a veteran of TV commercials also makes his debut with this film. The film is being presented by Reliance Entertainment and produced by Jigsaw Pictures.

Jigsaw Pictures’ next feature production is a comic thriller set in Mumbai and Kerala, which they will start shooting in April 2014.

  • Agent Vinod: No flow of story, no explanations

Agent Vinod: No flow of story, no explanations

MUMBAI: A spy thriller is not a genre often seen in Hindi films and for that reason one thought Agent Vinod was a welcome idea as well as an opportune one. The title betrays director Sriram Raghvan‘s fascination for films he grew up watching. His last film, Johny Gaddaar (2007) was a remake of Gaddar (1973). For this film he opts for the title of a 1977 hit film, Agent Vinod. Further inspiration for the plot and situations comes from 1970s spy thrillers such as That Man In Istanbu

Producers: Saif Ali Khan, Dinesh Vijan.
    Director: Sriram Raghvan.
Cast: Saif Ali Khan, Kareena Kapoor, Gulshan Grover, Prem Chopra, Ravi Kissen, Ram Kapoor, Adil Hussain, Anshuman Singh, Shahbaaz Khan, Maryam Zakaria.

Saif Ali Khan, playing a RAW agent, has lost his close colleague – Ravi Kissen while on a mission to Russia. His last message before he was murdered was just the figures ‘242‘. That sets Saif Ali Khan on a mission to find out what these figures mean as he liquidates anybody and everybody that comes in his path. His search begins in Russia and takes him from place to place; while in Morocco, he meets Kareena Kapoor, a Pakistani, posing as a personal doctor to local Mafioso, Prem Chopra, but who is actually an MI6 agent now working for ISI. Kareena Kapoor has a sad past and dreams of a future with a nameplate describing her as a doctor, children and a husband who loves her more than anything (that is the emotional quotient in the film). Saif Ali Khan‘s trust button for her keeps blinking most of the time; that is till she convinces him that she is on his side and equally anxious to stop any destruction that the villains may have planned. As he goes from Russia to Morocco to Latvia to Karachi, he always outthinks his detractors and draws his gun faster than they do. He reaches Delhi at the same time as a nuclear bomb stolen by an ex-KGB man from the Russian depot is headed there via Somalia in a fishing trawler. The villains‘ grand plan blessed by Gulshan Grover, who is a refugee don under protection of Pakistani authorities (read Dawood), is to blow up Delhi with this nuclear bomb and blame it on some Islamic group. This is when the film provides finally some thrill and excitement. The culprit is killed, bomb traced and defused and Saif Ali Khan heads to South Africa to eliminate one more of a group who actually are behind such terror plots – a promise of a sequel.

Agent Vinod traverses from place to place as Saif Ali Khan follows clues. But because of this it comes across as a totally disjointed film. Nothing makes sense as men are tossed, kicked and shot. You don‘t care after a while since you are not taken into confidence as to who is who and why people are killing each other; no villain is constant or established. One makes an appearance and is killed soon enough. The Indian audience loves dhishum-dhishum and gun shots, not silencer-fitted guns. There is no flow of story, no explanations.

There are no smart one-liners the heroes in such films are expected to mouth; the few that are there are wry and too subtle to be enjoyed. There are no other distractions as the film has no comedy or emotions, songs lack appeal and romance, whatever little there is, is silent.

Yes, the film is beautifully shot and is apt technically, but that is not what attracts the audience as much an interesting story and entertainment. The film makes no demands on actors‘ histrionics as there is no drama; Saif Ali Khan has to survive this film on his charm which, alas, is missing. Kareena Kapoor is a hanger-on, playing an aide to Saif Ali Khan and looking forlorn. All the action and excitement going around never seem to touch her. The rest of the cast-Prem Chopra, Gulshan Grover, Ram Kapoor, Ravi Kissen, Shahbaz Khan-is packed off before you notice them.

Agent Vinod has had an average opening and its prospects from single screen are not bright while prospects at multiplexes are limited and hence far short of being cost effective.

  • I am Kalam is a nice Indian film
By VINOD MIRANI

I am Kalam is a nice Indian film By VINOD MIRANI

    Producer: Santanu Mishra
    Director: Nila Madhab Panda
Cast: Gulshan Grover, Harsh Mayar, Pitobash Tripathi, Husaan Saad, Beatrice Ordeix.

MUMBAI: A much talked about and acclaimed film, I Am Kalam is about finding and seeking inspiration from an idol, which drives a poor but bright youth to crave for education and pursue his ambitions.

Who better as an inspiration for a young village boy than the ex President of India, Dr APJ Abdul Kalam, a village boy himself who struggled to get education before going on to become an aerospace expert and eventually to occupy the highest office in India, that of the President?

Harsh Mayar is a poor village boy in Rajasthan. He works at a dhaba to support his mother and kid sister. He is a bright young boy with an almost photographic memory, which he uses to learn anything that is worth learning; every printed word is his gospel and his meagre belongings consist mainly of books.

Harsh learns his way around the dhaba business and wins the hearts of customers as well as the owner, Gulshan Grover, collecting hefty tips on the way. Harsh’s job also takes him to a royal haveli nearby to serve tea and food to mostly foreign tourists. Harsh has also befriended the dhaba camel, Laxmi, along with the people around him, and that is his mode of transport to the haveli.

The haveli has its own young occupant, Husaan Saad, a lonely descendant of royal family that still lives in the illusions of its royal Rajput past. Husaan Saad craves for company, which he finds in Harsh and soon both share friendship as well as trade their knowledge. While Harsh teaches the young prince Hindi and other tricks like climbing trees, he in the bargain learns English from the prince.

Other characters are included in the film as needed without crowding the space; Beatrice Ordeix, for example, a regular at the dhaba and a Rajasthan fan comes around just in time to teach the prince some much needed French. Beatrice loves everything Rajasthani including a Ravanhaththa, while Gulshan Grover on his part is her silent lover. Then there is a detractor in Harsh’s life in the form of another dhaba boy, Pitobash Tripathi, a wannabe Amitabh Bachchan with a funny as well as a vicious side to him.

Harsh finds his idol from a TV screen as he watches APJ Abdul Kalam, the then President, making a speech which inspires Harsh to get an education and one day be able to wear a tie as part of his attire and proof of education. He takes to the teachings of the President to heart and not only does he assume a new name for himself, Kalam, but even tries to ape his hair style.

I Am Kalam is a no-hassle light-hearted film with a nice, Indian story to tell and the Rajasthan background adds to its visual merit. There is nothing larger-than-life and the approach is more “tell it like it is”. Even while the film has a vital message to give, it is never preachy.

Director Nila Madhab Panda is in full control here doing full justice to Sanjay Chauhan’s writing. The songs and musical score blend well with the theme and locale. Harsh Mayar gives a true to life performance. Gulshan Grover does his bit with dignity, breaking away from the mould. Pitobash Tripathi is a natural talent. Husaan Saad and Beatrice Ordeix are good.

I Am Kalam is a must watch and promote film, which is the only way such a film can make a mark and inspire another one like it. Alas, as things stand, the film will go unnoticed.

A movie that couldn’t break out of its serial mould

Producer: Umesh Mehra, Rajesh Mehra, Rajiv Mehra
    Director: Rajiv Mehra
Cast: Pankaj Kapoor, Deven Bhojani, Manoh Pahwa, Sanjay Mishra, Hemant pandey, Asawari Joshi, Gaurav Kapoor, Seema Malik, Vinay Jain

MUMBAI :Converting the popularity of TV serials to films is yet very rare in India, two recent examples being Khichdi and now Office Office with its film version, Chala Mussaddi Office Office.

The early example was that of Sarat Chandra’s Shrikant, a TV serial on Doordarshan which was edited to film length. With Khichdi and Chala Mussaddi Office Office, things still seem to be at the experimental stage and give a feel of stretching a 23-minute episode into film length.

The film is about Pankaj Kapoor, a common man and retired school master, who loses his wife to the greedy doctors’ negligence and, with his son as company, embarks on a char dhaam yatra to immerse her ashes.

His ordeals and exploitations start with this journey and instead of culminating at the end of it, keep on multiplying. He comes home to see that his electricity has been cut for non-payment of bills. A greater shock awaits him when he goes to bank to withdraw money from his pension account and realises that none has been credited. His crusade starts when he discovers that in his absence, corrupt pension officers have marked him as dead and usurped his pension.

When he presents himself in person, the officers still want a proof and a witness that he is alive. Mussaddi is determined on getting his just dues; the pension officers are bent on not giving in. You patiently watch as he runs from pillar to post and back again to pillar till a fairly filmy climax puts Mussadi’s and your anxieties at rest.

Whichever way you look at it, the story of the film is just one episode’s worth of content and never manages to come out of its TV serial limitations even with the initial few reels devoted to side attractions like train TTC and ‘pandas’ of the banks of Ganges. They lay the ground for what is to follow, which the popularity of the serial did eons ago.

The story amplifies manifold the corruption in government offices and the helplessness of Mussaddilal. While in today’s scenario the unabashed corruption may look plausible, the protagonist’s helplessness does not.

Directorially fair, the film has good performances by its seasoned star cast with Pankaj Kapoor excelling as usual, supported ably by Deven Bhojani, Manoj Pahwa, Sanjay Mishra, Hemant Pandey, Asawari Joshi and Gaurav Kapur.

Chala Mussaddi Office Office faces poor prospects at the box office.
