He has had a sort of disciplined upbringing and did not receive much love while growing up which has made him the man he is today. He is very guarded and closed to any kind of emotion and affection from anyone. For him, it is just his work and business. The only time you see him emotionally invested is when it comes to his younger brother, he is very fond of him and has a soft spot for him. He is a strict businessman with unwavering dedication to his goals.   In his office, a minor mistake could lead to immediate firing and everyone harbors a certain fear of him. • On casual sexism & gender disparity: ‘Ishk Par Zor Nahi’ promises something different

On casual sexism & gender disparity: ‘Ishk Par Zor Nahi’ promises something different

MUMBAI: Sony Entertainment Television has strengthened its primetime line-up with the launch of Ishk Par Zor Nahi from 15 March. Ishk Par Zor Nahi, a new-age, young love story of Ahaan and Ishqi – two people who are not just different in personality, but also share polarising viewpoints about marriage. Starring Akshita Mudgal as Ishqi and Param Singh as Ahaan Malhotra, the show is produced by Four Lions Films, and will air Monday to Friday at 9:30pm.

Sony Entertainment Television & digital business content head Ashish Golwalkar shared that the channel is known for its variety entertainment, unique storylines and lovable characters. His effort is to create a property that can impart knowledge, highlight social and cultural issues prevalent in the society and leave a long-lasting image in the minds of audiences.

Said he: “We have had a great start to the year, and we are committed to bring forth an eclectic mix of narratives to our viewers. Ishk Par Zor Nahi has a flavour of romance through an accidental couple who are poles apart from each other and nurture different perspectives on marriage, relationships and family. It is a fresh young love story with relatable characters, and we are pleased to partner with Gul Khan and Deepti Kalwani for this show. We are certain the audience will enjoy what the show has to offer.”

According to Golwalkar, television has a limited scope in terms of creative expression, but what sets Ishk Par Zor Nahi apart is the way the makers have weaved the storyline. He credits Four Lions Films co-founder Gul Khan for coming up with the idea.

“I’ve been working with SET for the past five years, and we’ve tried to collaborate on a project numerous times but somehow it didn’t work out. Finally, during the lockdown, I approached Khan to create a love drama. From there on, the process of writing, re-writing, casting started,” he detailed.

The insights of the show are not very sublime or tough it is very simple, the way it is packaged makes it more engaging. It is a simple story of how two contrasting people come closer and eventually fall in love. What differentiates it is the value system, there upbringing, how they respond to societal norms which are deeply embedded within each family, added Golwalkar.

Khan is looking forward to working with Sony Entertainment Television for the second time. She mentioned that while Four Lions Films is known for making romantic shows, there are many things which remains unsaid; SET has given her the platform to speak her mind and address these underlying issues.

“In our society, casual sexism has become so common that we have questioning it. In a same household a girl and boy are treated differently, it is engraved in our minds that we have to change once we get married. It changes the way how we grow as an individual and at times bring a full stop to our happiness,” she shared.

Khan went on to say not to be deceived by the show’s initial impression – it might look like a simple love story, but as the story unravels, audiences will witness intense drama. Normally, it takes three to four months to write the script for a show, but in this case, it took much more time as the makers were trying to strike the right balance. She also revealed that the team at Sony TV was quite demanding, in a positive manner. They were quite precise over what they wanted out of the show.

While addressing a virtual conference, Golwalkar clarified that the intention of Ishk Par Zor Nahi is not to influence audiences or instruct them what is right or wrong; rather, it seeks to entertain them and, along the way, subtly raise some thought-provoking questions. He further added, “We didn’t have many launches in the second half of last year but this time we are working on experimental shows, then there is a sitcom genre with Sargam Ki Sadhe Sati, Punyashlok Ahilyabai is doing well for us in the 7.30 pm slot. Our recently launched show, Kyun Utthe Dil Chhod Aaye is also performing well. So, in an all we are trying to bring variety with our fiction shows.”

  • Namak Issk Ka looks into the societal gaze at female performers: Gul Khan

Namak Issk Ka looks into the societal gaze at female performers: Gul Khan

MUMBAI: Can a nachaniya (dancing girl) not be accepted as a dulhaniya (bride) or bahu? Colors’ latest romantic drama, Namak Issk Ka, questions this very outlook. Set in the heartland of Bihar, Namak Issk Ka is the story of Chamcham, who is looked down upon for her profession, but in a twist of fate is married off into a reputable family in Mumbai. But as she tries to fend off prejudice, she sets out on a journey to find her footing in the new family and, eventually, love. Produced by Four Lions Film founder and producer Gul Khan and co-produced by Sunny Side Up Films’ Dipti Kalwani, the show started airing 7 December onwards.

Both Khan and Kalwani clarified that the serial is not inspired by any particular person, but is based on the life of dancers that populate that belt, and how these performers are a part of every celebration in the family.

Everybody appreciates these dancers and their performances, but still people look down upon them. It’s not about the male mindset, but the societal gaze in general. While the entire family will be a part of the function with the dancer, somehow, they will consider her beneath themselves. This is what the makers have tried to bring out through the show.

Kalwani went on to elaborate that while a love story is at the core of Namak Issk Ka, the show is a romantic thriller with multiple interesting genres running in parallel, including a murder mystery and family drama. “With Namak Issk Ka, we have made a fast-moving, plot-driven potboiler of a show which is not just relegated to romance, and where every character has a very interesting backstory,” she said.

It was last year when Khan and Kalwani decided to do Namak Issk Ka. But then the pandemic and the subsequent lockdown happened, delaying the show. However, it also gave them a chance to iron out the details, and once the lockdown was lifted, they began shooting.

Due to Covid2019, the makers could not risk traveling to Bihar hence recreated the entire set in the backdrop of Maharashtra and outskirts of Mumbai. Khan mentioned, “We are very skilled at recreating the places that we feature. We shot in Wai, in and around Maharashtra. We tried to match the landscapes and terrains with those of Bihar. We also had people from Bihar help some of our actors with the language, dialogue and diction training.” She said they have ensured that viewers get the authentic experience of the place in the way she has shot the show.

Still, filming during the age of Coronavirus has been no easy task, shared Kalwani.
Additional challenges notwithstanding, the makers of the show have strictly adhered to all the safety protocols and are fumigating and sanitising the set regularly. They have conducted regular and compulsory medical checks for cast and crew members. They have, in fact, reduced the size of cast and crew present on the set.

The show also marks Khan’s first production venture with Colors. “We were trying to work with Colors for a very long time. After conceptualising the story, we pitched it to Colors and the team really liked it. From then on, we have gone ahead all guns blazing! So far, my experience has been amazing while working with Manisha Sharma and the entire team. We are happy to be associated with a channel that has always presented unique and entertaining concepts, and look forward to a great partnership,” she further added.

The producers discussed with Colors the language, casting, music and background score, the look of the show along with the level of glamour quotient that they wanted to have in Namak Issk Ka, and the audience it would cater to. The broadcaster and showrunners have been pretty much on the same page on all parameters before it went on the floors, Khan said.

Namak Issk Ka stars Shruti Sharma as Chamcham, and famous Bhojpuri actor Aditya Ojha as Yug Pratap Singh. According to Khan, there is a particular requirement for this show. The actors have to connect with the audiences and they have to look like they are from the heartland. While Aditya Ojha and Monalisa are from the Bhojpuri entertainment industry, Shruti Sharma, with her inclination and her talent, fit the bill as Chamcham. While casting for the show, the makers had to look for people who looked like they belonged in this universe.

The show is aired Monday to Friday at 9 pm, which is a very competitive slot – Sony TV airs Indian Idol, whereas Star Plus telecasts Maharaj Ki Jai Ho. Revealing how the production house is trying to make Namak Issk Ka stand out, Kalwani detailed, “The trick is to make a great show that the audience can relate to and narrate a story that you enjoy telling. In this case, we were very excited about telling the story coming from the Hindi heartland. We wanted to talk about music and dance, the people and their language, their food and everything about them. So, culturally we were very keen to do something from this belt, and we have woven a story around it. The story has its own element of love, hatred, thriller, mystery. There is no such exact formula to success. This is what we wanted to do.”

  • Colors bolsters its primetime with Namak Issk Ka

Colors bolsters its primetime with Namak Issk Ka

MUMBAI: She is known to win hearts with her thumkas and flamboyance. Wearing her bright lipstick and sheer exuberance, she sets the stage on fire with her impeccable dance moves. Meet Chamcham, the famous professional dancer or nachaniya.  But should being a nachaniya become a reason to be denied a happy and a fulfilling life?  Can a nachaniya not be accepted as a dulhaniya (bride) or bahu? Questioning this very outlook is Colors’ latest romantic drama, Namak Issk Ka.

Based in the heartland of Bihar, Namak Issk Ka is the story of Chamcham, who is looked down upon for her profession, but in a twist of fate is married off into a reputable family in Mumbai. But as she tries to fend off prejudice, she sets out on a journey of finding her footing in the new family and eventually love. Produced by Gul Khan and co-produced by Dipti Kalwani, the show stars Shruti Sharma as Chamcham and the famous Bhojpuri actor Aditya Ojha as Yug Pratap Singh.

Namak Issk Ka will air starting 7 December, Monday to Friday at 9 pm on Colors.

Viacom 18 Hindi mass entertainment and kids TV network head Nina Elavia Jaipuria said, “In these challenging times, we at Colors have strived to keep our audience entertained with variety content and launched several shows across genres including Ishq Mein Marjawan, Pinjara, Bigg Boss and Molkki. To strengthen our prime time line-up further, we are adding another unconventional show to the mix with Namak Issk Ka.

Just like any other girl of her age, Chamcham dreams of a happy and reputable life. But she is always met with grimaces and criticism because she is a professional stage dancer, a nachaniya from a small town in Bihar. An orphan, Chamcham is a self-made person who becomes a dancer to make ends meet. Completely filmy, she loves emulating all the Bollywood heroines’ dance moves that translated into her becoming a dancer. If only her struggles were not enough, life throws another curve ball at her and in a twist of fate, she gets married to an affluent businessman Yug Pratap Singh. Even before she realises, Chamcham’s life takes a strange turn as her troubles magnify and a question looms- Kya Aap Ek Nachaniya Ko Karenge Bahu Ke Roop Mein Swikaar (Will you accept a dancing girl as a daughter-in-law)?

Chief content officer for Hindi mass entertainment at Viacom18 Manisha Sharma said, “Namak Issk Ka is a refreshing and  heartwarming love story that touches upon various aspects. The character of Chamcham, a Nachaniya from Bihar, her journey to find love and respect, and the chemistry between two striking personalities is what sets the tone of the show and makes it stand out. We are excited to associate with Gul Khan who has done some incredible work in the past, and look forward to entertaining our viewers with exceptional storytelling.”

Four Lions Films producer Gul Khan said, “Namak Issk Ka will give the viewers a glimpse into the life of a glamorous nachaniya (dancing girl) who earns her living by dancing at events and weddings. In a most endearing way, it showcases how under unforeseen circumstances she gets married to an affluent man and she struggles to find her footing in her new family, fight off the labels that people have given her owing to her profession and find love. We are happy to be associated with Colors, a channel that has always presented unique and entertaining concepts, and look forward to a great partnership.”

Co-Producer Dipti Kalwani added, “Through Chamcham’s story, we wish to highlight the fact that your individuality does not hinge on your profession. However unconventional it may be, everyone has a right to lead a reputable life and find acceptance in whatever role they take on in life, whether it is of a wife or a daughter-in-law.”

  • Ekta Kapoor leads TV frat to make inspiring COVID-19 film

Ekta Kapoor leads TV frat to make inspiring COVID-19 film

MUMBAI: You have to hand it to creative czarina Ekta Kapor. If she does something, she does it in style. Like her latest effort at assuaging the ennui that some might be going through thanks to being boxed in their homes courtesy the long-drawn lockdown on account of COVID-19. She has got together more than a score of actors, a bunch of leading TV producers from the Indian Film & TV Producers Council, and put out a short film labelled Quarantine which not only educates, engages, but also entertains about how we can deal with the pandemic.

It was sometime around the end of the first week of April that she mentioned on the IFTPC WhatsApp group that the TV industry should make a film that would be TV-centric  and that she had a concept which could be fleshed out.  The Amitabh Bachchan Covid2019 short  film  Family with several leading actors had just been released and the view was  that the TV frat should also be doing something to keep viewers entertained and positive.

She sought volunteers from the group who would work with her to make it a reality. Almost immediately, Binaifer Kohkli, Fazila Allana (Sol India Banijay), Anil Wanvari (The Indian Telly Awards – and the indiantelevision.com group), Abhishek Rege (Endemol Shine India), JD Majethia (Hats Off Productions), Gul Khan agreed and came on  board as executive producers. (Tanushree Dasgupta came in a couple of days later as executive producer).  Dheeraj Sarna – a producer in his own right –was roped in to write the script for the short but entertaining film, with dialogues being penned by him and Anukalp Goswami.  Prolific TV music director Aashish Rego hopped on board to do the background music for the film.

Full House Media MD Sonali Jaffar was assigned with the creative responsibility, while Guroudev Bhalla was given the task of directing the video, disclosed  actor and producer JD Majethia.

Another Whatsapp group was formed with those who had volunteered.  “We connected on a Zoom call where the ideas were discussed,” he says. “After brainstorming and discussing with fellow producers a collective call was taken on how this video should be light hearted and yet conveying the important message of staying home. The basic premise was that the actors would simulate as if they were in the Big Boss house and not forcibly locked down in their homes and the story would take off from there.”

He adds, “After getting the final script the next stage was the casting.  Few were mentioned in the script and few names of actors were discussed who could participate in the video. Some were available and some were not but most of them did their best to make it happen.  It was the collective effort made by the producers, actors, editor and director to shoot this video. Because technically speaking it was not easy to shoot this video on your phone. Guroudev Bhalla did a fantastic job of putting this together. He and along with other executive producers constantly coordinated with actors for every frame of the video. He coordinated with them regarding props or lighting, how their lines should be, who should say what. He coordinated with the editor Vikas Sharma.”

Binaifer Kohli was one of the executive producers. She mentioned that Ekta Kapoor approached Sonali Jaffar to look at the creative aspect of the film. Kohli assisted Guroudev Bhalla in the direction. Kohli’s primary job was to ensure proper coordination between director, actor and the editor. According to Kohli, the actors did a phenomenal job of pulling this off. As it was not that easy to shoot just with their phone. Ensuring the proper angle and lighting. The entire shoot was done in five days as each actor was allocated different lines.

She echoes, “Some of the actors shot the video by themselves on their phone, others took help of the family members. It had moving shots where eye level had to be maintained. Lighting was a very important aspect. Whenever the changes were required actors reshot the video there and then. They sought help from the editor on uploading it. We also changed the script according to the person.”

Ekta Kapoor who spearheaded “Quarantine” says, “This video is an initiative of the television producers association of our country and we got all the top television actors to participate in this video, which was conceptualized over numerous conference calls! It is an effort from all of us in encouraging people to stay home. We hope this reaches far and wide.”

The entire concept of making this video was to keep it casual, entertaining yet focusing on the importance of staying at home. Says SOL India-Banijay Group founder & MD Fazila AllanA: “In these unprecedented times it’s just nice if one can bring a smile to people’s faces and this was a small endeavour by the TV fraternity to do just that.”

Full House Media MD Sonali Jaffar instructed the actors about their dialogues and in which manner they have to shoot. She adds, “Shooting at home was quite challenging also as a lot of prop exchanges were going on with the broom. Everyone was instructed to use a plain background as it would be difficult to match lightings. Because some were standing in the balcony some were having other backgrounds so we had to tell them to keep the same background. The other option was to use black and white background but it would have been difficult.”

“The important thing was whenever we were shooting we shared the clips with the director there and then so that the changes could be made before editing the video. I thank all actors and producers for coming together and creating this beautiful video,” she further added.

Adds Wanvari: “What is amazing how all of us worked as a team without shying away from whatever we  were asked to do. Even the actors immediately caught on to the idea that was shared with them by the creative director and Guroudev Bhalla. And they were also more than willing to do their bits to help Indians at home. They have all done a fantastic job, the results are for you to see.”

According to Majethia two versions of the short film have been created, one featuring sign language for the hearing and speech impaired and one without it. He adds, “I think this is the beauty of this video. The idea I personally loved the most.”

The video is being promoted across all social media platforms Majethia also mentions that the producers are in talks with television broadcasters to play it on national television.
