    We focus on employee learning & development: Rohit Suri, GroupM

    We care about you: that’s the message GroupM sends to its employees. While most others are scrambling to get out of the office on Friday, you will see GroupM employees dancing to Zumba or meditating away their worries through Yoga. What others may term ‘indulgence’ is an ‘investment’ for the media agency that revels in its employees’ holistic well-being.

    It is not surprising then that GroupM bagged the silver medal at the HR Excellence Awards 2017, which awards companies for outstanding human capital strategy and execution. Its efforts in nurturing and maintaining a high-calibre talent pool entail keeping the retention rate higher than the industry benchmark.

    Over the last few years, GroupM India has created a standard of excellence for several tangible and intangible employee benefits. The mAdvantage programme of 2015 has since rolled out several initiatives designed around employee healthcare and holistic wellness. Flexible timings and work-from-home policies allow employees to manage their career and personal lives.

    IndianTelevision caught up with GroupM chief HR and talent officer at South Asia Rohit Suri to understand what makes the network a winner year after year, how do they ensure a healthy work-life balance and much more. Excerpts:

    Another year, another Award! How does it feel to get recognised globally for your work done here in India?

    This is a validation of how employees feel about us internally within our system in India and the global team and how India is performing and what India is doing for its employees. This is one external validation for us. Our endeavour has been to maintain a positive work-life balance and move towards work-life integration. We make continuous changes to our policies and practices in line with the changing social and business realities. With the help of technology and a stellar team of thorough professionals, we are today one of the most preferred employers in our industry.

    What do you do to ensure a happy work place?

    We believe in total rewards, where we know compensation alone cannot keep employees happy in the company and we cannot rely on it to retain them as there will always be someone who is willing to pay more in the market. The benefits, engagement programmes, growth and development opportunities that a company provides contributes largely to make any workplace a happy workplace. We have an internal online system called as, Jobfy, where any employee at GroupM can apply for any position internally in India, Asia pacific or globally.  In today’s time, people want to change roles every 2-3 years and since we have so many diverse roles in the organisation, they can move internally. We have seen a lot of our employees move from India to Singapore, Vietnam, China and the US.

    We are deeply focussed on our employees’ learning and development. In the first 6 months of 2017, we have trained around 500 people in office hours and 1700 people on varying hours since we started using digital. We also undertake several employee welfare and engagement programmes, where an entire week is dedicated to wellness and there are doctors and dieticians on site. 

    We have recently launched an AI-based online platform where employees can chat with each other, giving us an insight as to how they feel at work and if we see a concerning message, we address it immediately.

    What are your leave policies and work from home policies?

    We have flexible timings and those who want to work from home can do so once every two weeks. If the employees want to come in late and leave early, they can do that too, because we want people to spend time with their families and loved ones. As CVL Srinivas says, ‘everyone should be able to see the sunset with their family.’

    Do you have certain special policies rolled out for female employees?

    GroupM is a gender-neutral organisation but we do have specific programmes for women employees. Maxus Media organises Work the Talk initiative, where women are trained globally to make sure they break the glass ceiling in the organisation. From a safety perspective, if a woman employee has to stay back in the office until late hours, we have cabs to drop them home. In a city like Delhi, which is not considered safe, we ensure our security personnel drop them at home safely. If she is flying in late in the night, we make sure she is provided with a cab and reaches home safely.

    What are the challenges one has to face in the changing dynamics of the industry? 

    It is more of being ahead of the curve and being proactive rather than a challenge. GroupM has an open-door culture where anyone can reach out to anyone. We encourage speaking out and having a conversation with each other and counsellors. One might often see CVL Srinivas having lunch with the team in the cafeteria and having a conversation with them. We are very transparent in nature and want people to know our business agendas, our challenges, our focus and everything else.

    Is it difficult to maintain a healthy work-life balance with changing social and business realities?

    There are two ways to look at it. One has to be innovative in terms of how they manage it. Digital has caused disruption and the pace of change is quick. Technology can make our life easier now. The social fabric is changing and with millennials coming into force, their thought process is very different. A lot of people are very ambitious in India and they just need the right direction.

    What more needs to be done in the Indian media environment to make sure there is a healthy work-life balance?

    At the end of the day, polices are just frameworks and you have to continue to look at best practices followed globally and see if they can work in India. An organisation must also come up with newer practices that will work in their company and it is an ongoing process.

    The recent allegations against film mogul Harvey Weinstein have sparked a global conversation about the issue of sexual harassment in the workplace. What precautionary measures does GroupM take to ensure women safety?

    We have established the Vishakha committee (Prevention of Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace) across all our offices, which are headed by women. GroupM has Zero tolerance for harassment at any level. If any such act is seen happening, the conversation will happen immediately and we would not want it to be encouraged.  There has to be mutual respect and you need a very healthy environment to work in but some things are unacceptable and we don’t shy away from taking immediate actions. That could mean suspension or termination but we will never shy away from taking stringent and strict actions against any kind of sexual harassment.

    What more does the industry need to do to help sustain a healthy work environment?

    I can only speak for GroupM and as of today, the way we work is very simple. If we think there is need to change this, we will change that. Period! We constantly get feedback from employees on what more could be done and we do that. If in Delhi, a woman needs to be accompanied while going back home it will be implemented and when we felt that people should not stay back till late, that was also implemented.

    What makes employees stay back at GroupM?

    Everything depends on the culture of the organisation. Culture could be defined by the policies of the organisation, people you hire, how you interact with one another, how quick you deliver, delivery of output and passion.

    MUMBAI: Httpool has announced the appointment of Milind Pathak as the managing director for Southeast Asia to be based in Jakarta.

    In this role, Milind will be responsible for laying the foundation and setting up of Httpool in the region and building up strategic relationships with key clients and partners. Httpool has global client / partner alliances, and intends to provide the Southeast Asia market access to these partners.

    Milind is an experienced international executive, with strong knowledge of the southeast Asia region and a well-recognised thought leadership in mobile and digital industry. He has been an active evangelist in the Asian market for mobile entertainment/ marketing / commerce / internet domain for over two decades.

    In his previous role, Milind was the COO of Madhouse, South Asia, A WPP- GroupM’s mobile marketing specialist unit, where he was responsible for providing award-winning mobile media and creative solutions across the GroupM client portfolio and help them manoeuver a mobile first journey in the digital world.

    Milind has played multiple level leadership roles in his previous avatars at One97 (Paytm) – Comviva (later acquired by Tech-Mahindra) / Mitsui / Buongiorno in multiple markets of Asia / Africa and Middle East

    Httpool APAC co-founder and MD Sunny Nagpal said: “Milind is an exceptional choice to lead the Southeast Asia business as he has a track record of leading businesses at a global level and deliver sustained growth and profitability. His in-depth experience in this sector will lay a strong foundation for the SEA business.”

    Pathak says: “Mobile-first has always been my approach, and I will be working with our diverse network teams and support our global partners to maximise full potential of the growing Southeast Asian market in this mobile domain.”

    He will be leading business initiatives and set up of the Southeast Asia operations of Httpool group. Httpool is in process of starting its operations in Indonesia and Malaysia and looking at aggressively penetrating the region.

    MUMBAI: The new billion-dollar revenue, media, content and technology agency to be created from the merger of MEC and Maxus will be named ‘Wavemaker.’

    The brand, along with a new visual identity, will go live locally as the merger completes in each country, to be finalised by January 2018. Wavemaker will have offices in 90 countries and over 8,500 employees. Major global clients include L’Oreal, Vodafone, Marriott, Colgate-Palmolive and Paramount.

    iProspect names Philips as global chief product officer

    MUMBAI: iProspect continues to bolster its global executive team with the appointment of Rohan Philips as the global chief product officer. In his new role, Philips will direct and oversee iProspect’s roadmap for central product development, adoption and commercialisation across its 52 markets.

    iProspect will report to the global president Ruth Stubbs, and will be based in Singapore.

    “A dynamic approach to the development and evolution of our global product set is a vital component in our ability to engage audience across all platforms and connect brands to consumers. As a business, we must become more sensitive to the challenges clients are facing.     MUMBAI: Tim Castree, Global CEO of MEC and CEO of “NewCo”, has announced that Kartik Sharma has been named as Managing Director of the new media, content and technology agency in India and South Asia when it launches in January 2018. Kartik has been Managing Director of Maxus South Asia since 2014 and in that time, has led the agency to outstanding new business growth and success.

    Tim Castree commented: “We’re creating a brand new billion-dollar revenue media, content and technology agency, dubbed ‘NewCo’ for now. With such ambition, comes a need for brilliant talent to lead and inspire, and so today’s news is very exciting for us.     Following GroupM’s recent commitment to adding offline media capabilities, an expanded geographic footprint and an influx of talent to the agency, Christian Juhl, global CEO of Essence, a global digital-first agency, today announced that T. Gangadhar, current Managing Director of MEC South Asia, will transition into the new role of Chairman of India and Managing Director of North Asia, Essence. Gangadhar will report into Kyoko Matsushita, CEO of Essence APAC. He will continue to be based in Mumbai.

    Anand Chakravarthy, who has served as Managing Partner at Maxus India since 2015, will be transitioning into the role of Managing Director of Essence India. Chakravarthy will report into both Gangadhar and Matsushita and will work closely with the regional leadership in his new role.

    Both Gangadhar and Chakravarthy will assume their new roles by January 2018. The Essence teams will be strongly supported by the GroupM network as they look to expand their presence in market.   • Doordarshan in talks with US co as it plans varsity leagues via PPP

    MUMBAI: Doordarshan, inspired by the spectacular success of private broadcasters, is preparing to enter into the sports business with three different sports leagues in basketball, kabaddi and football. 

    Sports sponsorship in India grew 19.33 per cent in 2016 to touch Rs 6,400 crore, according to a report titled Sporting Nation in the Making IV, jointly published by GroupM ESP, and SportzPower, a sports business news company.

    The pubcaster is already in parleys with a US-based company, Doordarshan D-G Supriya Sahu said. The league, to be unveiled in couple of months, will be played amongst students from the university/college levels across the nation. Non-cricket leagues saw franchise revenue growing 4.97 per cent from Rs 201.2 crore in 2015 to Rs 211.2 crore in 2016.

    The main idea is to bolster a public-private partnership (PPP) to lay a platform for the multi-billion dollar university level sports – beginning with the three sports and later expanded to other sports. The matches will be aired on all Doordarshan channels including DD Sports and will be promoted across the mediums such as radio and outdoor publicity. 

    DD Sports, she said, was in the process of reforming the content, and rebranding it to make it relevant for its target audience. Sports leagues are major content differentiators in the genre. 

    In 2012, NDTV had ideated similar sports league with a university-level cricket league in partnership with Association of Indian Universities and the ministry of human resource development and BCCI (Board of Cricket Control in India). The league was aimed at encouraging cricket at the university level but didn’t last beyond the first season.

    Apart from Indian Premier League, there are at present five major sports leagues played across India — Indian Super League, Hockey India League, Pro Kabaddi League, Premier Badminton League and International Premier Tennis League.

  • Prashant N takes over as director – digital trading at Dentsu Aegis Network

    MUMBAI: Prashant N, an ace digital marketing professional with over a decade’s experience in strategic digital marketing, media planning, buying and content marketing, has taken over as the director – digital trading at Dentsu Aegis Network.

    Before joining DAN in Gurgaon, Prashant N was the director – digital media buying for a year at Isobar India – DAN Network, prior to which he was the director – media planning – north region at GroupM Media India.

    Prior to Isobar, Prashant served as the associate director – digital at Maxus before which he was promoted as the senior manager – media planning & buying from the position of account manager at Reprise Media.

    Starting his career as a sales executive at Cyber Media Online, Prashant moved to Neo Ogilvy India as the associate media supervisor before moving to Reprise.

    MUMBAI: GroupM, the world’s leading media investment group, has announced a portfolio restructure to improve service and delivery to clients.

    GroupM is committing to the expansion of Essence, its digital-first agency, by adding traditional media capabilities and a larger geographic footprint to the agency’s existing media and creative credentials. In time, Essence will also lead several key GroupM client relationships as part of this restructure.

    GroupM is also merging the global operations and teams of its agencies MEC and Maxus into a new, billion dollar revenue, media, content and technology agency under the leadership of MEC’s CEO Tim Castree.

    Maxus will continue to operate as an agency brand in India with the support of the newly formed global agency as well as the GroupM network.

    GroupM’s portfolio will now comprise three successful global media agency networks — Mindshare, MediaCom, and the new company – each with more than one billion dollars in annual revenues, plus an innovative digital-first agency, Essence. GroupM also plans new investments across all of its agencies and its [m]PLATFORM data and technology capabilities.

    “We’re committed to improving our service to clients. These moves will give us greater focus, help us innovate, and improve our speed of delivery,” said Kelly Clark, Global CEO, GroupM.

    Since Clark became global CEO in October 2016, GroupM has made a number of organizational changes. Clark recently appointed Lindsay Pattison as GroupM’s Chief Transformation Officer to lead a range of transformation initiatives. GroupM acquired Essence in November 2015.

    “The leadership team at Essence is excited about the opportunities this creates for our clients and our people,” said Christian Juhl, CEO, Essence. “Our mission is to make advertising more valuable to the world; with this infusion of talent, capabilities and markets, we can do this now on a bigger stage.” Clark named Castree CEO of MEC in November 2016.
