    Laura Maness steps down as global chief of Grey after three-year stint

    NEW YORK: Laura Maness is stepping down as global chief executive of Grey, the 105-year-old advertising agency, after more than three years at the helm. In a LinkedIn post published on Thursday, Maness—the first woman to lead the storied shop—said she would be “passing the baton” to close colleagues whilst embarking on what she described as a “bold new chapter.” She offered no details about her next move.

    The departure marks the end of a brief but eventful tenure for Maness, who became only the sixth global chief in Grey’s history when she took the reins in September 2022. During her time leading the WPP-owned agency, Grey operated as a standalone brand within the Ogilvy network, a structure designed to preserve its independence whilst leveraging the broader group’s resources.

    Maness joined Grey from Havas, where she spent nearly a decade, most recently as chief executive of the group’s north American flagship. At Havas she drove what the industry regarded as a remarkable turnaround, earning the agency accolades including Digiday’s most innovative culture and Ad Age’s best places to work. She also steered Havas to become the first major network agency in America to achieve B Corp certification.

    Before Havas, Maness spent six years at Designkitchen, an independent Chicago shop that was acquired by WPP in 2008 following growth she helped orchestrate. Her career spans stints at FCB Global, Propane and Wunderman, with early roles at Black Dog Interactive and Giant Step during the dot-com era.

    Beyond her executive roles, Maness serves on several boards, including Tory Burch Foundation, Alembic Technologies, B Lab and the 4A’s, where she is vice chair. She co-chairs 50/50 Women on Boards and is a founding member of Chief, the invitation-only network for women leaders.

    Grey, founded in 1917, markets itself on creating “famously effective” ideas for brands. The agency has been named to Newsweek’s top 100 global most loved workplaces and America’s greatest workplaces for women, with women representing 50 per cent of its executive leadership.

    Maness’s cryptic sign-off—”As for what’s next? More to come”—has left industry observers guessing about her future plans.

    Wondrlab ropes in Bhavesh Kosambia as content lead

    Mumbai: Wondrlab, one of India’s leading platform-first Martech networks, has appointed Bhavesh Kosambia as its content lead. As a part of strengthening its creative leadership team, Kosambia will report to co-founder & chief creative officer Amit Akali and lead a set of key accounts and talent.

    Kosambia has been around in the advertising industry for more than two decades, most recently as group creative director at Grey. He’s handled and built national and international brands like Audi, Coke, Ferrero, Gillette, Eureka Forbes, Reliance, Zee TV, Parle, Paras, Marico, and ITC. He has won various national and international awards, such as those from Cannes, One Show, the New York Festival, Adfest, and Spikes Asia. He’s even served on numerous juries, including the grand jury for the New York Festival.

    The last few years, he’s been focusing on his skills as an ad filmmaker and director. His films Tanishq “Raksha Bandhan” and Gillette “Soldier” have been among the top popular ones in the last couple of years.

    At Wondrlab, he will use his skills as a creative leader, thinker, and ad film director. Akali explained, “I’ve been lucky to work with Kosambia in the past, both as a creative person and as a filmmaker. He’s done some of our best work as a director, and I’ve seen him work his magic as a creative team leader. He’s one of those rare people who is constantly learning and evolving. And I’m sure he’ll quickly get down to doing cutting-edge, platform-first, tech-led work.”

    He further goes on to say, “We are also clear that in-house talent is going to get all possible opportunities, especially with our in-house production set up—Kosambia has already directed a few films for us, including the recent “Karva Chauth” film for Bharat Matrimony. Most importantly, he’s someone our clients can depend on as a partner and support system to build their brands.”

    Kosambia adds, “I have always believed that any place is made by the people who work there, and my association with Wonderlab and What’s Your Problem for the last couple of years has just proved me right again.     WPP board begins investigation of its CEO Sir Martin Sorrel, says WSJ

    MUMBAI: Once the toast of the advertising industry, investors, and shareholders, Sir Martin Sorrell now faces the ignominy of being probed by a law firm, which has been appointed by the WPP board for a potential misuse of assets and personal misconduct, if a report in the Wall Street Journal is to be believed.

    The agency group has been under pressure from clients and hungry for business rivals for a while. Its share price has fallen some 35 per cent as companies such as Alphabet (Google) and Facebook have been doing direct deals with brands, cutting agencies such as WPP out of the picture. Additionally, big spenders such as Unilever, Procter & Gamble have also been cutting back on marketing spends in a rapidly disintermediating digital content marketplace.

    This has led to WPP reportedly putting up a lackluster performance which in turn has affected its share price. Sorrell was also forced to take a cut in his pay, the amount he was forced to back down from 2017’s 48 million pounds sterling, will become clearer in the next few days as it announces its financial performance.

    A Saatchi & Saatchi finance executive in the seventies and eighties, Sorrell went about building what would become a global tour de force under the umbrella of a company called Wire & Plastic Products. He acquired 18 different below the line agencies over three years, before making an audacious $566 million dollar bid for J Walter Thompson and then $825 million for Ogilvy & Mather. He acquired both of them. He snared two other agencies Young & Rubicam and then Grey Worldwide on the follow through. Among the other agencies and communication services providers under WPP today include: Wunderman, Kantar Group, Hill & Knowlton, Burson-Marsteller, GroupM, Cohn & Wolfe, Brand Union, Buchanan UK among others.

    WPP as a group employs close to 200,000 employees worldwide and reported a revenue of 15.265 billion pounds sterling, with an operating income of 1.908 billion pounds sterling with net income standing at 1.912 billion pounds sterling in 2017.

    Investors have been baying for Sorrell’s blood for some time now with the agency not coming with a solid plan to revive growth. Speaking to indiantelevision.com in Amsterdam a couple of years ago Sorrell had said: “I only own two per cent of the company; but I am identified with the company. I will carry on as long they will let me. WPP is not a matter of life or death for me, it is more than that. They will carry me out to the glue factory.”

    Grey does ‘shararat’ with Britannia Cake’s new campaign

    MUMBAI: Who doesn’t love cakes? And when that cake is yummier than the usual fare, there seems to be a lot of competition around who gets to eat it. The starting point of this communication was to emphasize on the fact that Britannia Cakes are so tasty, one would go to any length to get their hands on it.

    Conceptualised and executed by Grey group, Bangalore, this TVC from Britannia sees a father-son duo caught in the most important question of the hour: Who gets to eat the cake? Who deserves it more? We see the father narrate a fantastical tale where he is recounting an incident when the child was much younger. He claims that when the boy’s Britannia Cake pack was stolen by a monkey, he undertook great risks to bring it back to the child. That, according to the father, is a jolly good reason why the cake pack should be all his.

    Just when we think that the child is convinced and the father has gotten away with his fibbing, we realise that the child is not as gullible as we had presumed him to be. After all, he is also his father’s son! With a sign off that reads, “Yummy waali shararat”, this spot nicely captures the mischievous relationship that we see between parents and children these days.

    MUMBAI: Who doesn’t love cakes? And when that cake is yummier than the usual fare, there seems to be a lot of competition around who gets to eat it. The starting point of this communication was to emphasize on the fact that Britannia Cakes are so tasty, one would go to any length to get their hands on it.

    Conceptualised and executed by Grey group, Bangalore, this TVC from Britannia sees a father-son duo caught in the most important question of the hour: Who gets to eat the cake? Who deserves it more? We see the father narrate a fantastical tale where he is recounting an incident when the child was much younger. He claims that when the boy’s Britannia Cake pack was stolen by a monkey, he undertook great risks to bring it back to the child. That, according to the father, is a jolly good reason why the cake pack should be all his.

    Just when we think that the child is convinced and the father has gotten away with his fibbing, we realise that the child is not as gullible as we had presumed him to be. After all, he is also his father’s son! With a sign off that reads, “Yummy waali shararat”, this spot nicely captures the mischievous relationship that we see between parents and children these days.
