    ‘Gravity’ and ‘American Hustle’ lead the 2014 Oscar Nominations

    MUMBAI: The 86th Academy Awards nominations were announced on the morning of 16 January in Beverly Hills, Calif. The nominations were led by the 3-D space odyssey Gravity and the con artist caper American Hustle, both with 10 nominations. The harrowing historical epic – 12 Years a Slave trailed closely with nine nominations.

     

    The three are among the nine films nominated for Best Picture. The other nominees are Captain Phillips, ‘Dallas Buyers Club, Her, Nebraska, The Wolf of Wall Street and Philomena.

     

    The best director nominees are David O. Russell for American Hustle, Alfonso Cuaron for Gravity, Alexander Payne for Nebraska, Steve McQueen for 12 Years a Slave, and Martin Scorsese for Paramount’s The Wolf of Wall Street.

     

    The Best Actor nominees include Chiwetel Ejiofor for 12 Years a Slave, Bruce Dern for Nebraska, Leonardo DiCaprio for The Wolf of Wall Street, Matthew McConaughey for Dallas Buyers Club and Christian Bale for American Hustle. The 77-year-old Dern is an Oscar nominee for the second time, 35 years after his nomination for Hal Ashby’s Coming Home. 

     

    The Best Actress nominees are Amy Adams for American Hustle, Cate Blanchett for Blue Jasmine, Sandra Bullock for Gravity, Judi Dench for Philomena and Meryl Streep for August: Osage County. With her nomination, Streep pads her record for most acting nominations. This is her 18th nod, including three wins, the last for 2011’s The Iron Lady.

     

    Woody Allen scored his record 16th screenwriting nomination for Blue Jasmine. Also up for original screenplay is American Hustle, Dallas Buyers Club, Her and Nebraska. In the adapted screenplay category are Before Midnight, Captain Phillips, Philomena, 12 Years a Slave and The Wolf of Wall Street.

     

    Pixar, usually a mainstay in the Best Animation category, wasn’t in the list this time. Monsters University, however, ruled the segment with Frozen, The Wind Rises, Despicable Me 2, The Croods and Ernest & Celestine.

     

    The first original song finalist announced was the title song from a rookie film called Alone Yet Not Alone in the mix with U2, Pharrell Williams, Karen O and the traditional Disney entry.

    Warner Bros. Pictures’ ‘Gravity’ returning to wide release on 17 January

    MUMBAI: Following months of overwhelming critical and audience acclaim and numerous year-end awards, Warner Bros Pictures is bringing Alfonso Cuarón’s cinematic achievement Gravity back to big screens in the US. The film, which stars Sandra Bullock and George Clooney, will be re-released on more than 900 screens on 17 January 2014, it was announced today by Warner Bros Pictures Domestic Distribution President Dan Fellman.

     

    Originally released on 4 October 2013, Gravity instantly became a favourite of both critics and audiences. It has since become one of the most honoured films of the year, most recently bringing a Golden Globe Award for Best Director to Alfonso Cuarón. The film has also received 11 BAFTA Award nominations and 10 Critics’ Choice Award nominations, both including Best Picture, Best Director and Best Actress (Bullock). It has also won Best Picture awards from several prestigious critics organisations, including the Los Angeles Film Critics Association, and has been included on 395 critics’ and critics groups’ top ten lists, as well as being named one of the AFI’s ten best films of the year. It was also announced as the year’s best reviewed film by the website Rotten Tomatoes.

     

    In addition, the talents behind the film have been recognised by their peers, with a Directors Guild of America Award nomination for Cuarón; a Producers Guild of America Award nomination for David Heyman and Cuarón; a Screen Actors Guild Award nomination for Bullock; a American Society of Cinematographers Award nomination for Emmanuel Lubezki; an Art Directors Guild Award nomination for Andy Nicholson; and an American Cinema Editors’ Eddie Award nomination for Cuarón and Mark Sanger.

     

    Gravity has also been a smash hit at the box office, earning more than $670 million worldwide and counting, with most moviegoers opting to view it in 3D. In making the announcement, Fellman stated, “We are thrilled by the many accolades for Gravity, which has generated renewed word-of-mouth and interest in seeing the film, whether for the first time or to experience it again. We wanted to give audiences everywhere another opportunity to see it the way it was meant to be seen—on the big screen.”

     

    Academy Award winners Sandra Bullock (The Blind Side) and George Clooney (Syriana) star in Gravity, a heart-pounding thriller that pulls one into the infinite and unforgiving realm of deep space. The film is directed by Oscar nominee Alfonso Cuarón (Children of Men).

    MUMBAI: The Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts (AACTA) announced the winners of the 3rd AACTA International Awards on Friday 10 January 2014 at an intimate Awards Ceremony in Los Angeles hosted by multi-award winning actor and AACTA President Geoffrey Rush.

     

    The Awards recognise screen excellence regardless of geography across seven categories including Best Film, Best Direction, Best Screenplay, Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actor and Best Supporting Actress.

     

    Blue Jasmine’s Australian leading lady, Cate Blanchett was called to the stage by AACTA President Geoffrey Rush to accept the AACTA International Award for Best Actress.

     

    Blanchett’s acclaimed performance as Jasmine in the Woody Allen film has been tipped to win a raft of awards in the 2014 International Awards season including a possible second Oscar which, if occurs, would make her the first Australian actress in history to be awarded twice by AMPAS.

     

    Gravity, the visual masterpiece directed by BAFTA winner and Oscar nominee Alfonso Cuarón, received the AACTA International Award for Best Film and the AACTA International Award for Best Direction.

     

    The space odyssey, based on a story written by Alfonso Cuarón’s son Jonás, pushed the known boundaries of cinematography and technologies to illustrate a tense story of skill and survival set in zero gravity. A team of world renowned VFX artists worked with Cuarón to realise his extraordinary vision including visual effects supervisor Tim Webber and Australian VFX House Rising Sun Pictures.

     

    American Hustle, the most nominated film in this year’s AACTA International Awards also received two Awards. The AACTA International Award for Best Screenplay, (which went to Eric Warren Singer and the film’s Director David O. Russell) and to actress Jennifer Lawrence who received her second AACTA International Award in a David O. Russell film; this time for her portrayal of Rosalyn, the explosively alluring and manic housewife to Christian Bale’s Irving Rosenfeld.

     

    12 Years a slave saw wins in both actor categories with Chiwetel Ejiofor receiving the AACTA International Award for Best Actor and Michael Fassbender the AACTA International Award for Best Supporting Actor. Set in pre-Civil War America the film is based on the true story of Solomon Northup, a free black man from upstate New York who was abducted and sold into slavery. 12 Years a slave is directed by UK director Steve McQueen.

     

    AACTA President, Geoffrey Rush, said: “The AACTA International Awards are Australia’s international stamp of screen success. They recognise our international counterparts, add an Australian voice to international Academy discussion, and celebrate our fellow Australians working internationally.

     

    “I congratulate all of this year’s AACTA International Award nominees and winners on their compelling and inspiring work and as always I look forward with anticipation to see if our international peers have concurred with the AACTA International Chapter in this year’s Awards season selection.’’ Rush said.

     

    The 3rd AACTA International Awards will be aired on Foxtel’s Arena in Australia on Sunday 12 January, 2014 at 7:30pm.

    MUMBAI: If you have seen the movie Gravity then the realness that the movie gives to the space experience is something remembering lifelong. Now, one of the world’s oldest magazine’s TV channel National Geographic is all set to give the globe a view of Earth from the outer space.

     

    This March, the infotainment channel will telecast live from space a two-hour episode that will be broadcast from the $100 billion satellite station International Space Station (ISS) and Mission Control Houston which will over 170 countries. Produced by Arrow Media, Live from Space will be a ride with astronauts Rick Mastracchio and Koichi Wakata from the ISS and astronaut Mike Massimino will be live in Houston. The innovative feature is that viewers will be able to chat via video with the astronauts too.

     

    The ISS that is situated about 400 kms above, orbits the earth every 90 minutes. NGC is promising incredible shots of the planet such as sunset, sunrise, city lights, lightning storms and shooting star.

     

    “Every day at NGC our team tries to reach for the stars. Now we are literally able to do it! We are honoured to have secured such amazing access to the station and the astronauts living there and are exhilarated by the tremendous challenge to show Earth…live,” said NGC president Howard T Owens.

     

    “We’re thrilled to be making this unique event for NGC Worldwide. The technological and logistical challenges of broadcasting live from space may be enormous, but there’s no bigger buzz than creating mind-blowing content that works in micro gravity, on the world’s largest spacecraft!,” added Arrow Media’s creative director Tom Brisley.

     

    AT $160 billion, the ISS is the most expensive object ever that has been existing for over two decades.

     

    What until now has only been used for science purposes will now be utilised for entertaining the world!

    Lukup Media and Warner Bros partner to create India’s first on demand TV channel

    NEW DELHI: Lukup Media has teamed up with Warner Bros Digital Distribution to offer its newly released movies such as Gravity and The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug and a selection of many new releases, catalogue titles and popular TV series, will be offered to viewers via an on-demand TV channel powered by a new product called the Lukup Player.

     

    The Lukup Player delivers a combination of live and on-demand content on television and other devices people use to consume content.

     

    The deal will see titles made available through the on-demand service from February 2014, as well as future new releases. Users will have access to more than 200 films and TV series from the Warner Bros. library.

     

    Lukuo Media CEO Kallol Borah said: “We are very happy to partner Warner Bros. and bring a wide selection of popular and new movies and TV shows which will be available through India’s first on-demand TV channel. The channel will allow people to choose titles from their TV program guide, pay for them and view them at a time of their choice.”

     

    Chris Dyde, Senior Vice President, International Licensee Markets, Warner Bros. Home Entertainment Group said: “Providing consumers with more choices and improving the movie experience at home is at the heart of Warner Bros.’ Digital strategy and we’re delighted to be working with Lukup Media, which will see a fantastic selection of both new and library movies offered to viewers in India”.

     

    Lukup Media plans to launch the Lukup Player in February 2014 and it will carry multiple on-demand channels that it will deliver on TV in addition to the live TV channels carried by satellite and cable platforms.

    MUMBAI: The British equivalent of the Oscars, the 2014 British Academy of Film & Television Arts (BAFTA) Awards Nominations was announced on Wednesday morning by Helen McCrory (Harry Potter) and Luke Evans (The Hobbit).

     

    Gravity, the space themed movie has topped the nominations with 11 nods including Best Film and Outstanding British Film. Sandra Bullock has garnered the Best Actress nod for her role as the medical engineer, Dr. Ryan Stone. Director, Alfonso Cuaron has also been nominated in the Best Director category; he also shares the Best Original Screenplay nomination with his son, Jonas Cuaron. The film has also garnered nominations for Best Original Music, Best Cinematography, Best Editing, Best Production Design, Best Sound and Best Special Visual Effects.

     

    12 Years a Slave is nominated for Best Film, Director for Steve McQueen, Adapted Screenplay, Original Music, Cinematography, Editing and Production Design. While, American Hustle received nominations for Best Film, Director for David O. Russell, Original Screenplay, Production Design, Costume Design and Make Up & Hair.

     

    Behind the Candelabra is nominated in Adapted Screenplay, Production Design, Costume Design and Make Up & Hair. Matt Damon is nominated for Supporting Actor.

     

    Saving Mr. Banks receives nominations for Outstanding British Film, Outstanding Debut by a British Writer, Director or Producer, Original Music and Costume Design. Emma Thompson is nominated for Leading Actress.

     

    Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom is nominated for Outstanding British Film, alongside Gravity, Philomena, Rush, Saving Mr. Banks and The Selfish Giant.

     

    Behind the Candelabra and Saving Mr. Banks are each nominated five times. Philomena, Rush and The Wolf of Wall Street have four nominations. Blue Jasmine, The Great Gatsby, Inside Llewyn Davis and Nebraska have each been nominated three times. The Act of Killing, The Butler and The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug have two nominations each.

     

    Best actor nominations went to Chiwetel Ejiofor for 12 Years a Slave, Christian Bale for American Hustle, Bruce Dern for Nebraska, Leonardo DiCaprio in Martin Scorsese’s The Wolf of Wall Street and Tom Hanks for Captain Phillips.

     

    Competing alongside Bullock for best actress are Amy Adams for American Hustle, Cate Blanchett for Woody Allen’s tragic comedy Blue Jasmine, Emma Thompson for Saving Mr. Banks, and Judi Dench for Philomena. The awards ceremony for the BAFTAs, formally called the EE British Academy Film Awards, will take place in London on 16 February.

    MUMBAI: ABAI one if India’s primary associations supporting the digital and creative arts sectors is organising Abai Fest 2013 at the University Grounds in Mysore on the 6 and 7 December 2013. This is going to be the first ever festival screening exclusive footage from all over the world in “animation and visual effects”.

    “Computer Graphics has become part and parcel of International and local content creation in film and television. It provides the digital intermediation needed by filmmakers, directors and studios to mount bigger and bolder stories, themes and projects. Too little of how this is done has been exposed to the Indian public,” said ABAI & Country Head – Technicolor India president Biren Ghose.

    Gravity, Superman, Man of Steel, World War Z, The Croods, Epic, Skyfall, Life of Pi and many other recent releases are testimony to the fact that computer graphics (CG) in digital production is now the new norm in filmmaking.

    India is rapidly becoming a global hub for major VFX production and the domestic film industry is also adopting CG rapidly as a tool helping the director to go beyond the limits of the camera.

    “Not enough awareness and screenings of animation and VFX takes place and we want to be a ‘melting pot’ venue for fun, discussion, participation and exclusively presenting content in this part of the world. Not much ‘animation’ is seen outside of the few cartoon channels,” said Ghose.

    The festival would bring some of the world’s latest showcase featuring the best of what has been created in the recent past. Directors, producers and professionals will be at hand to present, meet, discuss and exhibit the state of the art.

    “This will help open minds, hearts and doors in animation, gaming and visual effects (VFX). Come join us in experiencing the fun and festivity,” concluded Ghose.
