  • Star Sports Select celebrates Wimbledon’s return with new promo

KOLKATA: Star Sports Select, the official broadcaster of the premier Grand Slam event has launched a promo #GreatnessResumes that brings to the fore how the toughest setbacks lead to the greatest comeback. Wimbledon 2021 will be live and exclusive on Star Sports Select from 28 June- 11 July, 3:30 PM onwards.

Wimbledon was cancelled last year, for the first time since the Second World War, due to the pandemic. However, this year’s men’s and women’s singles final will be played with full capacity crowds in attendance on Centre Court, while the tournament will begin with 50 per cent capacity across the grounds, the AELTC announced.

Star and Disney India sports head Sanjog Gupta said, “Wimbledon is the most revered of all Grand Slams with rich history and strong appeal amongst fans. Through #GreatnessResumes, we look to further the excitement for the return of this iconic championship after two years. Fans are eagerly anticipating the return of Federer, Serena, and Djokovic along with the new generation of top players, to the grass at AELTC. And with history at stake, the occasion has assumed greater proportions, which fans can experience on SS Select.”

Federer, who left the clay courts at Paris midway, will hope to make a strong return, and extend his winning record at Wimbledon. World No. three Rafael Nadal pulled out of The Championships and the following Tokyo Olympics to prolong his career. The Spaniard, who lost to eventual champion Novak Djokovic at the French Open, said that that the two-week gap between Roland Garros and Wimbledon “didn’t make it easier on my body to recuperate after the always demanding clay-court season”.

Nadal’s absence now puts the World No. one Serbian in a prime position to notch up another title-winning run at London. Djokovic will draw level with Federer and Rafael Nadal on 20 Grand Slam singles titles if he retains his Wimbledon crown.

Meanwhile, in the women’s field, veteran Serena Williams along with World No. one Ashleigh Barty will be the cynosure of all eyes. World No. three Simona Halep, and two-time champion in London, Petra Kvitova will also be of key interest to fans as they could pose tough competition to their opponents. In a big delight for Indian tennis fans, superstar Sania Mirza, who has not played on tour since the WTA 1000 Dubai Open in March, returns to action in the doubles event.

  • Neo bolsters French Open coverage with a dual feed

Neo bolsters French Open coverage with a dual feed

MUMBAI: The Neo Sports Network will debut a dual feed broadcast plan for the tennis Grand Slam the French Open. The tournament runs from 26 May-9 June.

The aim of this effort is to ensure that tennis fans do not miss out on any top stars playing simultaneously at the French Open as the network‘s two channels, Neo Prime and Neo Sports, will have live feeds from separate courts.

This is the first time that anybody has done this for a tennis Grand Slam where two channels were used to broadcast separate feeds through the course of the event.

This initiative means that fans will have access to 225 hours of live content on the Neo Sports Network, which is almost twice as much as the 130-140 hours that are typically set aside for live coverage of a Grand Slam across broadcasters.

Neo Sports Broadcast COO Prasana Krishnan said, “The attraction of the French Open is extremely high and Neo‘s coverage is taking it to significant new landmarks. Last year, the reach of the event was a third better than Wimbledon and nearly equal to the other two Grand Slams put together. This year, we will be taking this to greater heights with dual feed coverage and nearly doubling live coverage to 225 hours, which is in line with our strategy to bring in more novelty with non-cricket properties.”

The dual feed will ensure at least 45 additional hours of live content in prime time, providing a win-win situation for both viewers and advertisers.

There will also be live updates and contests on the Neo Prime Twitter handle (@neoprimetv) through the two week period to add to the interactive experience.

ZenithOptimedia managing partner Navin Khemka though doesn‘t feel that the dual feed will make much of a difference in terms of the ad revenue that the event gets. “The sport is too niche. A crore or two more isn‘t going to matter much. The rate isn‘t that high. I think that the aim is more about keeping the two channels alive.” A tennis Grand Slam makes around 3-5 crore in ad revenue.

Rafael Nadal is gunning for an unprecedented eight title, Roger Federer is hunting for that 18th Grand Slam, and Novak Djokovic is just a trophy away from completing a career Grand Slam.

  • Bhupathi, Fuller team up to launch XIX Globosport

MUMBAI: Tennis doubles player Mahesh Bhupathi‘s Globosport and media entrepreneur Simon Fuller‘s XIX Entertainment have launched a new venture named XIX Globosport to capitalise on the two partners strengths in media, entertainment and tennis.

The new partnership has been created to extend relationships and create new opportunities in developing markets around the world, with the burgeoning sports and entertainment opportunities in India and the Middle East in particular providing an exciting backdrop to the enterprise.

In July last year, Globosport had divested 50 per cent stake in its brand-advisory business vertical to American talent management major Platinum Rye Entertainment.

The venture‘s first client will be tennis World No. 2 Andy Murray and the venture is expected to contract with the respected tennis agent and former ATP professional Ugo Colombini to provide on the ground tennis support and specialist resourcing for the player as he challenges for major honours during the 2013 ATP Calendar.

Fuller is best known for creating the ‘Idol‘ singing based reality show franchise which has become popular globally. XIX Entertainment has managed Murray since 2007 during which time he has become a national hero and a global sports star, enjoying breakthrough moments including winning Olympic Gold at London 2012 and a historic first Grand Slam title at the US Open in 2012.

Murray said, “I believe a mix of Simon‘s experience and Mahesh‘s understanding of the sport will create the perfect team for my off court interests and will allow me to continue to dedicate myself and focus on my goals on the court.”

Bhupathi said, “The opportunities for us in these markets are now second to none, and being in partnership with a successful and pioneering individual like Simon is very exciting. He has a vision for this part of the world and we are excited that he has chosen to partner us.”

Fuller said, “Our business is built on strategic partnerships with key individuals in different parts of the world and I’m delighted to be working with Mahesh as we look to expand into the Indian sub continent and other developing markets.”

The new partnership will provide Murray with the global resource, media expertise and strategic skills of Fuller’s XIX Entertainment, and the credibility, drive and specialist tennis skills of Globosport. The new partnership will start with immediate effect.
