  • ‘Happy Ending’… Weekend watch

    ‘Happy Ending’… Weekend watch

MUMBAI: Saif Ali Khan seems to be trying new ideas lately. His Go Goa Gone was a rare zombie movie on Indian screens. With Happy Ending, he tries something contemporary in theme and treatment. In other ways though, The hero is love proof; five affairs and he is still single because he refuses to or is not the kind to fall in love. No permanent commitments from him.

There was a time when shooting a film abroad was a novelty and, sort of, made up for a weak script to an extent. That is to say, the visuals helped distract the viewer from the narrative. That fad died out. People soon realised that shooting abroad was generally not relevant to the film. Yet, Happy Ending is based in the US and still things remain the same. All major players are Indian and always the bosses, while the whites are mere extras.

Saif Ali Khan has written a book, Payback Time, which became a best seller. He is now a celebrity, loaded with cash, driving a convertible sports car and changing girlfriends frequently because he does not believe in love. He is living on his past glory and money. His best seller made him enough money to afford all of the above and his logic is, why work when I can enjoy life? However, he soon comes face to face with the fact of being, a one-book wonder. His money has run out and his car has been towed away for failing to pay instalments. It is over five years since his first and only best seller and cash as well as the glory have faded.

Producers: Dinesh Vijan, Saif Ali Khan, Sunil Lulla.

    Directors: Raj Nidimoru, Krishna DK.

Cast: Govinda, Saif Ali Khan, Ileana D’Cruz. Kalki Koechlin, Ranvir Shorey, in guest roles, Priety Zinta and Kareena Kapoor.

Saif’s problem doubles as he has also failed to live up to his commitment to deliver another manuscript to his publisher. To add to his misery his own agent has introduced another writer, Ileana D’Cruz, to the publishers who writes romantic mush which takes her to the top position. She is now a best seller.

Saif is an ‘I specialist’, which is to say that he is all about “I, Me and Myself”. He does not see beyond his own nose. His encounter with Ileana starts with envy followed by mental games until he realises that she herself knows she is selling pulp to people through her bestsellers. Broke to the core, Saif needs money urgently. He also needs his convertible back besides money for booze and affairs. To add to his troubles, he is stalked by his last girlfriend, Kalki Koechlin. He had broken up with her but she is still in love with him and plans to spend rest of her life with him. This break up is one-sided because Saif has not been able to convey his decision to Kalki.

This is when his agent convinces him to stoop a little and meet Govinda, a super star of single screens who wants to capture multiplex audience too, for which he needs a script. Saif is assigned to write it and he accepts it because, he is told, “Paise ka koi problem nahi.” The problem is, Saif is not a romedy writer which is what Govinda wants while Ileana specialises just in those! Also, another problem with Saif is that, he has written many manuscripts but never been able to complete any because he has never been able to find a happy ending.

Saif has his alter ego to guide him, which is a version of Saif who is potbellied, unkempt and always hogging on some food or other. On his say so, Saif manages to date Ileana over the weekend and they become friends. Next, Saif accompanies her to her book reading and book-signing road trip to another city. Spending the night in the same room, after initial resistance, both agree to have sex on the condition that there would be no binding, no saying ‘I love you’ on either side.

Predictably, love happens between them, which neither one of the two is willing to confess. It is time for Ileana to leave for India. Saif is uncomfortable but still refuses to believe he could fall in love. It takes some convincing from his ex, Preity Zinta, and his alter ego, the potbellied Saif, until he agrees to stop her before she boards her flight. His script with a happy ending is now ready for Govinda.

Happy Ending is a fun film most of the time despite the pace dropping in the second half; some trimming could make it racy. The film’s mainstay is its visuals and dialogue. The dialogue are witty and peppy and worth a chuckle. Direction is generally good with some patchy moments. Music holds appeal in the film more than it did on audio tracks. Of the cast, Govinda excels as a caricature of a super star. Ranvir Shorey does very well despite a small role. Saif, in both his roles, is underplayed; a wise thing to do after the debacle of Humshakals. Ileana is fair. Kalki is okay.

Happy Ending caters mainly to high-end multiplex and metro crowd who can get its subtle humour, mostly thought up in English. A slow starter, Happy Ending is an ideal DVD watch.

  • ‘Happy Ending’ making match on Tinder

‘Happy Ending’ making match on Tinder

MUMBAI: The much awaited Happy Ending that stars Saif Ali Khan, Ileana D’cruz, Govinda, Kalki Koechlin and Ranvir Shorey is set to release on 21 November. Directed by Raj & DK, Happy Ending is a story about two writers Yudi and Aanchal who are both commitment phobics, and their journey towards a happy ending. Pegged as a ‘Rom-Com about Rom-Coms’, the digital campaign for this film has gone ahead of the traditional social media of Facebook and Twitter and has explored the popular dating app Tinder.

The lead pair of the film, Yudi and Aanchal (Saif and Ileana) joined Tinder three days prior to the release. Post the announcement on social media, a lot of people ‘matched’ their profiles on Tinder and started having a conversation with the characters. The activity quickly picked up and in less than an hour both their Tinder profiles had over 100 matches.

On Twitter, many users engaged in fun conversations with Yudi & Aanchal where the characters asked them to meet them on 21 November hence popularising the release date.

The Glitch group head entertainment strategy Mehak Sabat said, “Look around and you will find the youth is on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Tinder. If social media platforms are evolving, so should our movie promotion campaigns. With Happy Ending, we are the first to tap the potential of Tinder. We have gained immense traction on the app ever since we have launched this activity, and users are not only reacting to the novelty of the campaign but also relating with the movie protagonists.”

“A small research in our circle helped us find out that Tinder is full of commitment-phobic people! Young boys and girls just looking to spend some fun time together not really caring about ‘Where is this relationship going?’ and knowing our characters as from Happy Ending Yudi & Aanchal, we were sure they would definitely  be the first ones to sign up on Tinder. What better way to get the boys to fall in awe of Aanchal and the girls to fall for Yudi?,” Eros International marketing team said.

Happy Ending releases in theatres this Friday.

  • ‘Kill/Dil’… Will too

    ‘Kill/Dil’… Will too

MUMBAI: The stories of orphan children turning into juvenile delinquents who then graduate to hard core criminals have become rather commonplace. One of YRF’s own recent films, Gunday, is one such example. Here is another.

Govinda, a don of some sort whose main business is to accept supari killing contracts, finds two tiny tots in a garbage bin. The boys grow up into Ranveer Singh and Ali Zafar. The boys get into petty crimes as soon as they learn to stand on their two feet. They are invincible. Nobody ever catches them or hits back. Soon they also become bullet proof as they take to guns becoming Govinda’s main shooters.

When they are not shooting down people out of the blue, they also have lot of fun. After all, they have never let Govinda down and he, on his part, has been generous with them. And, between the assignments they have nothing to do except spend that money.

Their home is Delhi and soon the Delhi culture brings them, especially Singh, face to face with his future romance, Parineeti Chopra. At this pub, the duo of Zafar and Singh are guzzling their alcohol when on the dance floor, someone makes a pass at Parineeti who in turn tells him off. The lad pulls a gun on Parineeti giving Singh a chance to save her and drive the villain off.

    Producer: Aditya Chopra.

    Director: Shaad Ali.

Cast: Ranveer Singh, Ali Zafar, Parineeti Chopra, Govinda.

Romance blossoms between Singh and Parineeti, which Singh knows Govinda won’t approve of. To add to that, for the first time ever, Singh fails to shoot a person he has been assigned to eliminate. While Govinda is livid, Singh’s conscience has caught up with him. He wants to change his ways and lead an honest life to be worthy of Parineeti. For her part, Parineeti has herself given up a career where she could have made enough money to instead take up the challenge of helping ex-convicts settle into a normal life away from crime. He even starts selling insurance policies. Unaware of Singh’s background, this is one more criminal she is helping turn honest.

When Govinda is sure Singh is now out of his control, he plays a double game. He asks one of his men to kill Singh while he warns Zafar what is about to happen and also tells Parineeti how she will soon know what Singh’s past is.

Having found out about Singh, Parineeti now does not want anything to do with him. On his part, Govinda’s purpose has been served as Singh returns to the fold and is ready for his next assignment. But, with Parineeti on his mind, Singh draws his gun but does not manage to fire, giving his victim the chance to shoot at him and receiving a bullet in his back for his efforts.

However, not having got a chance to tell his story to Parineeti, Singh has made a disc of his life story and sent it to Parineeti who sobs as she watches it and wants Singh back.

Kill/Dil has a weak plot and shoddy script which starts bad and goes on deteriorating as it progresses. By the second half, it is a mess. Direction is lacklustre. Musically, this 127-minute film is crowded with nine songs, probably to make up for lack of content. Photography is not up to the mark. Performance wise, Govinda is good while Zafar is passable. Singh looks funny in his clean-shaven look sans moustache; there is nothing different about his acting from other films. Parineeti’s role is ill-defined.

Kill/Dil, trying to be a thriller, a romance, and a comedy and fails to deliver on all fronts.

  • Govinda makes a comeback in singing

Govinda makes a comeback in singing

After becoming one of the most successful actors in Bollywood, Govinda tried his luck in singing too when he released a pop album in 1998. And now, the talented actor is all set to release two singles and their music videos soon.

Gori Tere Naina Sapne Main Aaye with music director Shamir Tandon is one of the singles which has elements of Rajasthani folk and garba beats in sync with the Navratri mood and the other one is said to be a hardcore party number titled Pinto Party Da Mood. One of the music videos will also feature TV actress Pooja Banerjee, who is popular for her role as Parvati in the tele-series Mahadev.

However, Govinda’s music album is yet to be titled.

  • Clash of the Titans

    Clash of the Titans

what more?! DID Supermoms is going to have an impact on the digital space with a roadblock of two major portals in India – youtube.com and yahoo.com (YouTube mast head and Yahoo super take over). Its micro site has various engagement platforms for ‘netizens’ where all the super moms can upload their dancing video on the DID title track. A video wall with all these entries would be published during the sustenance of the show.

Sony has had a successful integration with its network channel’s popular IPL show called Extraaa Innings T20 on Max. Besides, there is a countdown bug on the channel and a very high ratio of promo slots devoted to IIJ launch.

The smartest move by Colors is that of the show’s Grand Premiere which is aimed at garnering maximum eye balls. The launch episode will be as big as the show itself.

Kick starting the show will be dancing queen Madhuri who will team up with Ranbir for a stunning performance on their new item number- Ghaghra. Next to enthrall viewers will be an entertaining performance by Sushant Singh Rajput and actress Jacqueline Fernandez who will be introducing the 12 celebrity contestants.

The launch episode week will also see the three Deols – Sunny, Bobby and Dharmendra shake a leg with the Jhalak contestants adding on to the commencement of the power packed journey of Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa.

To further heat up the competition, Star Plus is upping the ante on its dance reality show India’s Dancing Superstar (IDS) which has been on air since 27 April at 9.00 pm. It has planned a special maha episode. Explains Star India vice-president marketing Nikhil Madhok: “For 1 June, IDS will have a two and a half hour dance ka maha episode which will start at 8 pm. The episode has one of the legends of dance, Govinda, doing something he has never done before on Indian television. Viewers will see him play a double role in an extremely entertaining dance act. The episode will also see the beginning of the face-off round, which is a very unique concept for a dance show in India.”

    Star marketing head! Nikhil Madhok

Sounds great, but what is the media view of all these intense content creation and marketing initiatives that the GECs have drawn up?

Madison’s Banerjee proffers a perspective. Says he: “Such overcrowding of reality shows on weekends will lead to cannibalisation both in terms of viewership and also revenues. Channels need to understand that with such high investment they should look for a clean window or time-bands that assures them of the best return.”

He further points outs: “These shows can coexist with smarter planning. Next season, even advertisers will get wary of investing if average ratings of these shows come down.”

Now that’s a piece of advice, none of the GEC players should ignore!

  • Sajid Nadiadwala turns director

    Sajid Nadiadwala turns director

MUMBAI: Sajid Nadiadwala, who has produced over a dozen films with various top stars and given break to some new directors, will wield the megaphone for his next production, Kick.

Kick will star Salman Khan in the lead, while the other star cast yet to be finalised.

Nadiadwala, who started out as a production assistant in his Uncle Habib Nadiadwala’s production company over 30 years back, turned producer in late 80 with Zulm Ki Hukumat starring Dharmendra and Govinda. The film, which faced a lot of hurdles, finally saw release in 1992. After braving some setbacks in his early productions, he finally saw his first hit, Jeet in 1996 followed by Judwaa the very next year.

Since then Nadiadwala has produced 14 films with a tremendous success ratio as well as establishing his banner, Nadiadwala Grandson, as one of the top three independent production houses in the Hindi film industry.

When asked what made him take this decision, Nadiadwala attributes it to Salman Khan who first made this suggestion almost 10 years back and has been doing so often. “I am now ready to take the plunge,” he said.

For Nadiadwala, who has produced five films with Salman Khan and is known to be actively involved in all aspects of his home productions, turning to direction was inevitable and a matter of time.

  • Loot is past expiry date

    Loot is past expiry date

    Producer: Shabbir Boxwala, Anup Gandhi.
    Director: Rajnish Raj Thakur.
Cast: Govinda, Suniel Shetty, Jaaved Jaafery, Mahaakshay Chakraborty, Mika, Kim Sharma, Shweta

MUMBAI: There was a trend a few years back of gathering a bunch of actors of varied images, shape and size, sending them abroad with a stunt coordinator and special effects wizards and putting together a film qualifying as ‘thrilling action adventure shot on foreign locations‘; the foreign tag being a novelty.

In case of Loot, locations like Bangkok/Pattaya, the so-called novelty, have featured in more films than Govinda or Suniel Shetty, the lead players of this movie have; so much for location novelty.

Govinda and Jaaved Jaafery are blundering housebreakers who have a track record of never succeeding; whether as a punishment or reward they are despatched to Pattaya to steal some treasure, with Suniel Shetty and Mahaakshay Chakraborty added as other specialists by art dealer Dalip Tahil. What they don‘t know is that they will be pitted against the biggest dons of the subcontinent, who have settled there, and will become sacrificial goats.

Mahesh Manjrekar is a Pakistani don settled in Pattaya who wants to get rid of super don, Prem Chopra, and become the super don instead. The quartet of Suniel Shetty, Govinda, Jaaved Jaafery and Mahaakshay Chakroborty are told they are robbing a treasure but are instead sent to Mahesh Manjrekar‘s house, who they tie up and loot.

Along with cash, they also lay their hands on some tapes of Manjrekar‘s conversations with other sundry dons in which they talk about liquidating Prem Chopra. On the side is a RAW agent, Ravi Kishan, who has his own sinister ideas of getting his hands on these tapes to make millions. At this point, you don‘t care anymore where the story is going since even the writer seems to have no clue.

There are some super human stunts, Pattaya night life, songs, chase sequences and what have you. But these have all been seen in so many films over and over again. By the time it ends, you are more tired than all those performing the antics.

With a hackneyed script, the film‘s direction sticks to routine as well. Instead of performing, the actors have a style or what you may call “idiosyncrasies”: Sunil Shetty keeps running his hands over his crew-cut, Govinda goes on never-ending, unfathomable diatribes in chaste Hindi, Jaaved Jaafery keeps getting mixed up between a Bhindi Bazaar Muslim and a Sindhi, and Mahaakshay Chakraborty looks all at sea.

The girls have only little more to do here than junior artistes in any other film. Mahesh Manjrekar is a caricature don and hams his way through the film. Other hunks picked up to fill the spaces don‘t matter. Mika as a street gangster is a laughable imitation of 1970s Hollywood films. Music is bad except background score.

Loot, coming as it does ages after its due date, is past expiry date.

Bhardwaj, Mahesh Manjrekar, Ravi Kishan, Prem Chopra, Razzak Khan, Dalip Tahil.

Producer: Shanti Varma, Raj Varma, Jay Prakash.
    Director: Late Ambrish Sangal.
Cast: Swaraaj Singh, Swati Anand, Sambhavana Seth, Ali Asgar, Dinesh Hingoo, Raza Murad.

Tension ension Doooor is a huge case of misplaced understandings of film business

Every once in a while there comes a man loaded with cash and misguided notions of capturing the film industry in a short cut to attaining stardom. Films like Tension Doooor are the result: it is a huge case of misplaced understandings of film business.

So here is this guy called Swaraaj Singh, who is so pure-at-heart that when lightning strikes the bus he is travelling on, he is the only one to walk out of it alive. The lightning was meant to strike sinners and he was the only clean soul! He goes back to his village but realises he has lost his hearing (total waste of footage since this has nothing to do with things that follow) but has gained an extra sensory power to read people‘s thoughts. Soon he identifies the frauds in his village but this leads to trouble with the village heads and he is banished from his village. He comes to Mumbai where he meets pickpocket Ali Asgar who suggest they cash in on his gift of reading minds; soon Swaraaj Singh is a most sought after psychiatrist-cum-trouble shooter till his path crosses that of Raza Murad, a traitor, leading to an action climax.

The film has 1960s written all over it, from its titles to story and treatment. It is ancient and there is nothing pleasant to watch on screen. The hero has no qualifications to be one – looks, acting or personality – save for his own money put into the making.

  • Viacom 18 to pre-release Loot in Bihar

Viacom 18 to pre-release Loot in Bihar

MUMBAI: Viacom18 Motion Pictures has decided that its upcoming film Loot will be released in Bihar two-days prior to its nationwide release.

The Suniel Shetty, Govinda, Javed Jaffri-starrer Loot is scheduled to release all over on 4 November, while in Bihar it will now release on 2 November as a special gesture for filmgoers of Bihar on the occasion of Chatt Pooja.

Film director Rajnish Thakur said, “I am also from Patna, I know the importance of Chatt Pooja in North India. I think releasing the film on the auspicious day will bring good luck to my film.”

Loot is a tale of four extremely unskilled crooks (Shetty, Govinda, Jafferi and Mahakshay) who are out to steal precious jewels from Bangkok. Notorious for their inefficiency; the foursome are in for more trouble than what they preempt.

The film, made by Popcorn Motion Pictures & Production, is being released by Viacom18 Motion Pictures.
