Internet to be disruptive force in video distribution to rural areas

MUMBAI: Internet has become a new medium for delivering video to consumers. It has been reaching around 400 million consumers with a free to watch option on their mobiles. VBS 2019 organised by Indiantelevision.com created a platform for industry doyens to discuss the changing role of the internet in video distribution.

A panel discussion of Video and Broadband Summit 2019 focused on the Internet's role in video distribution. It was moderated by digital strategy consultant Uday Sodhi with MediaKind APAC marketing head Chiranjeev Singh, Win Broadband Services MD and CEO K V Seshasayee, Jio advertising & strategy VP Mohit Kapoor and Google media and entertainment industry head Sandeep Ramesh as the panellists.

They shared their views on the internet being a new medium of delivering content. They agreed that while the internet will impact video entertainment distribution, there is enough space in the Indian media industry for all stakeholders, from internet providers, OTT players to media networks, to co-exist and complement each other. The panellists also believe the internet has emerged as another prominent distributor in the broadcast industry.

Google’s Ramesh briefed the audiences on how internet disrupts the videos delivered to the consumers today and how things will be going forward. He said, "From the consumer’s point of view, video on demand is a habit. Once the consumers move to video on demand, they will not come back. This will happen as it is a secular change. All entertainment will be available online, sooner or later, and consumers will have a desire to watch the content wherever they want. This change will have implications on the content makers and distributors, but from the advertising stand point, digital advertising will be benefitted."

Jio’s Kapoor highlighted an important fact, which is the innovation of smartphones. He said that Jio introduced Jio phones which have feature phone segments and are smart phones, sold for a price between Rs 700 and Rs 1,500. Around 100 million phones have been sold and consumers are using feature phones, but not using internet for viewing content or videos. About broadband, he informed out of 250 million homes in India, 50 million homes is Jio’s target, which will be achieved. Compared to the US or any other country, India is ahead in content consumption. Currently, average consumption of internet is around 8.5 – 9 GB. Jio is offering more than 11 – 12 GBs monthly.

Win Broadband’s Seshasayee said, “All content providers and aggregators are focusing on tier 1 and 2 cities and few are trying to reach tier 3 cities. As per the statistics, out of more than 400 million Indian viewers who do not have internet access, the ones who have the access are using 2G, which will be obsolete within two months. As per mobile consumption statistics, 60 per cent consumers are consuming videos on mobile. So, if there are places with no internet access, there are opportunities for the country providers to enter that market, make use of the available resources and find an alternate solution to the problem.”

Sodhi said that there is a huge opportunity created by the internet, daily in the dark areas. For around 700-800 million users who do not get cable to DTH in their homes, internet may become a way for them to deliver content.

MediaKind’s Singh said that internet has actually enabled content creators and owners to reach consumers directly, which is happening with OTT platforms. This is a challenge for linear TV. Consumers watch linear TV for live updates like breaking news. The lag between the live TV and the OTT platform for the same content is narrowing down, which is now around maximum five seconds. So, consumers are moving to OTT platforms. We need to make sure that the consumers get enough value for the services they are paying for.

The panelists also agreed that internet is a great opportunity for LCOs as well. They can provide OTT and video service to consumers in rural areas. LCOs can also build a library of YouTube videos, but monetisation or cost should be nominal because ultimately the content is free for the consumers.

Kapoor said that in a few years, all countries will have OTT apps. Countries will spend a huge amount of money on programming. There will be a competition but that will happen when fibre will reach homes and the app or video will show up on the screens.

He further said that the first thing which will happen is that India will get real broadband. The starting speed will be 100 mbps and will go higher in gbps. Once broadband will be available, consumers will realise that what they are paying for. He gave an example by saying that he has not viewed cable in a while, and his TV runs on broadband. As per the statistics, there were 20 – 25 million consumers who were consuming 1 GB internet in a month, but now the number has increased to 400 million consumers using 1 GB internet in a day.

  • Programmatic TV is the future of advertising

Programmatic TV is the future of advertising

As we move towards a digitally-driven world at a high pace, it is essential for brands to stay ahead of the curve and discover/develop newer and effective ways to reach the consumers ensuring impact. Now in the ever-evolving digital world, advertising has bypassed the traditional approach. With affordable internet prices across the country, digital advertising has evolved into a global marketplace at large. This new and evolved sector requires many relationships that extend further than the typical publisher/advertiser bond that brands and agencies were familiar with. Although new platforms for advertising have emerged but the value for television advertising is still growing. Television is of paramount importance for brands as they know TV ads work in reaching a larger set of audience who either has limited access to the internet or no access at all. Over the last decade, television has undergone major technological development which has enabled marketers to direct commercial messages in a focused manner on an individual level.

With the invention of Smart TV’s, traditional ways of TV ad buying are being challenged by the programmatic approach.  Programmatic TV largely refers to the TV inventory that could be bought via a programmatic platform.  As simple as it may sound but it is rather a complex mechanism which has many broad categories with several types to choose from. They consist of video on demand (VOD), digital linear TV, video and terrestrial linear. One can always purchase the programmatic inventory of the TV by either open exchange or via a private market place. Open exchange can be accessed by anyone by using real-time bidding to auction inventory to the highest bidder and private market place, on the other hand, is more direct and based on impressions rather than the traditional guarantees of time and place. This digitization has overall enabled marketers to apply data segment to leverage big screen and create high impact on the audience. Programmatic TV is a one-stop solution for brands as well as advertisers as it largely applies digital advertising’s efficiency model to traditional TV advertising with the automation of buying process with connected devices.

While programmatic TV as an option has an exceptional potential but it’s still quite new. Hence, programmatic TV is not living up to its true potential given that we’re still in the very early stages. Going by the pace of the adoption, the industry is likely to adopt it in phases. The first phase will induce buyers and sellers to use programmatic tech to transact digital video buys. This phase is actually underway and making notable strides across platforms. As per a report by Google Data, a 4x growth in impressions for videos was visible in 2014 itself. The second phase will ensure the overall development of the programmatic infrastructure, making it easier for buyers and sellers to place ads in streaming and video-on-demand TV content across connected devices efficiently. Both these phases will create pathways for the third and most important phase i.e. Linear TV. Support for Linear TV in programmatic is the most complex phase as it will take some significant work to integrate digital platforms with traditional systems and data vendors across the TV ecosystem. If done right, programmatic TV will help the sector in overcoming several ideological and technical challenges. The sector needs to get programmers and broadcasters along with advertisers to help understand what programmatic TV can do instead of what people think it does. This will then result in brands focusing on the things that really matter such as universal measurement across all advertising platforms for better ROI, the ability to reach viewers across screens, access to inventory devoid of rights issues along with programmatic buying support for set-top boxes and so on.

As per e-marketers research, programmatic TV would be a multi-billion dollar industry by 2022. Though it accounts for less than 1 per cent of all TV ad spends for now. As brand advertisers, programmers, distributors and ad tech providers work their way through the real-world challenges, programmatic TV will begin to live up to its true potential making it the future of advertising on TV.

  • Sony Pictures Entertainment & Google create an India-first ‘Trailer to Ticketing’ full funnel campaign for ‘Spider-Man: Far From Home’

Sony Pictures Entertainment & Google create an India-first ‘Trailer to Ticketing’ full funnel campaign for ‘Spider-Man: Far From Home’

MUMBAI: For a long time, the film industry has produced and marketed films based on gut and the same instinct and some basic media reports have been used to reach out to the movie going audiences. But Sony Pictures Entertainment Films India partnered with Google, their agency Sokrati and movie ticketing portals to go beyond gut, and used a comprehensive data analytics based approach to execute a India first ‘Trailer to Ticket’ model. Through this, the entire journey of the movie going audience was mapped right from the time, the person viewed the trailer to the final purchase of the ticket.

“ We, at Sony Pictures Entertainment India have always believed in the power of a data analytics driven approach. Hence we were looking at optimizing the full funnel, from the “Trailer to Ticketing”, especially for our Tent-Pole films. The Google team have been our biggest partners, helping us map the right ‘intent based’ audiences for our campaigns, from awareness to conversion. This not only delivered great engagement for our content, but also delivered spectacular returns on every dollar spent ” Shony Panjikaran, Director & Head of Marketing, SPE Films India.

Google India has now created a special case-study on this campaign (report attached).

Performance marketing today is blending people expertise with the latest technology to invest every penny righteously into marketing efforts. Spider-Man: Far From Home has proved that data and technology coupled with marketing experts avoid spends’ loss and catalysts unprecedented returns on spends. Through the digital campaign about 5 Lakh tickets were sold, and the film went on to become the most successful Spider-Man sequel in India, and in fact Sony Pictures Entertainment’s biggest film till date.

“ The ambition is to transform from a traditional entertainment company to a data-driven, audience-first company. Today, we’re making smarter decisions about the kind of creatives to be used, the right people to target, exactly where to target them and in the process significantly bringing down the marketing costs. Very soon, data analytics will help us with the kind of movies we need to make, understanding the ever changing tastes of the people we are making movies for, and the experiences we need to deliver.”  Shony Panjikaran, Director & Head of Marketing, SPE Films India.
