  • Warner Bros, Legendary plan ‘Godzilla,’ ‘King Kong’ trilogy

Warner Bros, Legendary plan ‘Godzilla,’ ‘King Kong’ trilogy

MUMBAI: Following Legendary’s and Warner Bros. Pictures’ 2014 success with the global reinvention of the Godzilla franchise, the companies have come together to create an epic, new shared cinematic franchise.

The initial trio of films are 2017’s Kong: Skull IslandGodzilla 2 in 2018; and then Godzilla vs. Kong, arriving in theaters in 2020.

All-powerful monsters become towering heroes for a new generation, revealing a mythology that brings together Godzilla and Legendary’s King Kong in an ecosystem of other giant super-species, both classic and new. Monarch, the human organization that uncovered Godzilla in the 2014 film, will expand their mission across multiple releases.

While Legendary maintains its new home at Universal Pictures, the Godzilla films remain in partnership with Warner Bros., who will now also distribute Kong as a part of this franchise. Production on Kong: Skull Island begins 19 October.

Warner Bros. and Legendary released Godzilla in May 2014 with an agreement to release Godzilla 2 on 8 June, 2018. Both films feature the human Monarch organization. Shortly following Legendary’s pact with NBC Universal, Legendary acquired rights to additional classic characters from Toho’s Godzilla universe, including Rodan, Mothra, and King Ghidorah. This paved the way for developing a franchise centered around Monarch and anchored by Godzilla, King Kong, and other famous creatures.

When Legendary announced films centered on Godzilla and Kong, fans all over the world speculated these two characters might one day meet in the same film. Classic Toho monsters including King Ghidorah, Mothra, and Rodan, as announced at Comic-Con 2014, may also join the Legendary pantheon of giant monster mayhem going forward.

Legendary CEO Thomas Tull said, “Audiences really responded to Godzilla. Today, I’m excited to reveal that film was only the beginning of an epic new entertainment universe. As a lifelong fan of these characters, I’ve always wanted to see the ultimate showdown, and today we’re pleased to be announcing that and more.”

“Working with our partners at Legendary, we enjoyed tremendous creative and commercial success with Godzilla. It’s great to be able to revisit these characters and help create a franchise with so many creative possibilities for filmmakers. Fans love these big, globally iconic films and it doesn’t get any bigger than this,” added Warner Bros Chairman and CEO Kevin Tsujihara.

Kong: Skull Island stars Tom Hiddleston, Sam Jackson, Brie Larson, John Goodman, Tian Jing, Corey Hawkins, Jason Mitchell, John Ortiz, Shea Whigham, and Toby Kebbell. Directed by Jordan Vogt-Roberts and written by Max Borenstein, John Gatins, Dan Gilroy, and Derek Connolly, Kong: Skull Island will fully immerse audiences in the mysterious and dangerous home of the king of the apes as a team of explorers ventures deep inside the treacherous, primordial island. Legendary’s Thomas Tull and Jon Jashni will produce with Mary Parent. Alex Garcia and Eric McLeod will executive produce. Warner Bros. will distribute the film in 3D and IMAX 3D on 10 March, 2017.

Godzilla 2 will be written by Max Borenstein and directed by Gareth Edwards. Legendary is producing with Parent, and Garcia will executive produce. The film is set to be released by Warner Bros. on 8 June, 2018.

Godzilla vs. Kong will be released in 2020.

Godzilla sets new records for creature films in Japan

NEW DELHI: Godzilla directed by Gareth Edwards made ?684 million (US$6.7 million) from 427 screens on its first three days in cinemas in Japan, including ?508 million (US$4.98 million) from 339,000 admissions on saturday and sunday.

The new film’s performance in Japan was uncertain as several Hollywood films with Japanese elements have performed below expectations in the world’s third largest film market.

Last year, Pacific Rim – also co-produced by Warner Bros and Legendary Pictures — opened sixth-placed with ?212 million (US$2.08 million) in its first three days for a final gross of ?1.55 billion (US$15.2 million). • A.R. Rahman gives music for ‘Million Dollar Arm’

A.R. Rahman gives music for ‘Million Dollar Arm’

NEW DELHI: Suraj Sharma, who played the young man stranded on a raft with the tiger in Ang Lee’s ‘Life of Pi,’ and Madhur Mittal who portrayed Salim in the best Oscar winning movie ‘Slumdog Millionaire,’ along with actor Jon Hamm feature in the new Disney film ‘Million Dollar Arm’ being released this weekend in the United States.

With its release last Friday, ‘Million Dollar Arm’ clashed with the giant ‘Godzilla’ remake distributed by Warner Bros.

The film has been directed by Craig Gillespie from a screenplay written by Tom McCarthy. The film is based on the true story of baseball pitchers Rinku Singh and Dinesh Patel who were discovered by sports agent J.B. Bernstein after winning a reality show competition. The film also stars Bill Paxton as pitching coach Tom House, Alan Arkin and Lake Bell. The film’s music is composed by A.R. Rahman. The movie is produced by Joe Roth, Mark Ciardi, and Gordon Gray for Walt Disney Pictures.

By the standards of the studio known for big-budget blockbusters, ‘Million Dollar Arm’ is a small film, with a budget of $25 million, a fraction of the $200 million it cost to make the soon-to-be-released ‘Maleficent’ with Angelina Jolie.

But Walt Disney Studios’ executive vice president of film distribution Dave Hollis said, “We believe in great stories, both big and small, that depict values such as courage, ambition, hard work and family. ‘Million Dollar Arm’ is a great story that has those unique human themes throughout.”

‘Million Dollar Arm’ was shot partly in India. Jon Hamm – who played the ‘Mad Men’ character Don Draper – plays sports agent J B Bernstein who in a desperate bid to drum up clients goes to India to find baseball pitchers among the country’s cricket-loving sportsmen. It is a real-life story that warmed hearts over at the Walt Disney Co.

The first part of ‘Million Dollar Arm’ shows a hot and chaotic Mumbai where JB struggles to get his improbable venture off the ground with a reality show. After frustrating rounds of tryouts, the American agent finds two strong arms in Rinku and Dinesh in rural India and brings them to Southern California, where they undergo training before being shown to Major League Baseball scouts.

The young men find themselves struggling with the culture, the lifestyle and, most importantly, the business expectations that JB has from them. His neighbour Brenda, a doctor played by Lake Bell, works to suture the fraying relationship in time to save their chances of making it in American baseball.

Despite working in conditions Hamm termed “remarkably warm and challenging,” the baseball tale with a global twist gave Hamm not only his first lead role in film but one that was decidedly more upbeat than the ad man that made him famous on television.

“I love the fact that it has a family component to it and it has redemption,” said Hamm. “You leave the movie theater with a smile on your face. It’s a nice alternative to my other on-screen persona, who is a little bit darker.”

Bell and Hamm, who are friends in real life, both highlighted one of the great advantages of working on a Disney film: for a change, they can send anyone in their families to see it and not have to worry about uncomfortable scenes. “It is nice to be part of a project that my sister can take her kids to,” said Hamm.

Prior to ‘Million Dollar Arm,’ Hamm played an FBI agent in Ben Affleck’s 2010 crime caper ‘The Town’ and a part as the loathsome lothario in the 2011 women-driven comedy ‘Bridesmaids.’

“I think you can make an argument that I was actually the star of ‘Bridesmaids,’” he joked.

As he films the final episodes of ‘Mad Men’ to air next year on the AMC cable network, Hamm said he has no road map for his career post-Don Draper, although ‘Million Dollar Arm’ fit perfectly into his loose plan.

The movie stars actors Suraj Sharma of ‘Life of Pi’ fame and Madhur Mittal of ‘Slumdog Millionaire’.

“I just want to work on things I find interesting in some way and this is a perfect example of something I find interesting,” said Hamm, who happens to be a big baseball fan.

  • A single computer would have taken 450 years to create ‘Godzilla’, say filmmakers

A single computer would have taken 450 years to create ‘Godzilla’, say filmmakers

NEW DELHI: Gareth Edwards’ Godzilla, the newest iteration of the famed movie monster, is the tallest version to ever grace the screen coming in at 355 feet with a tail that spans 550 feet.

It took 50,000 polygons to create the 3D model of thrashing purveyor of doom, which should explain the incredible amount of data that he is made of: it would take a single computer 445 years to render the monster.

That means that one computer would have had to start work in 1569 to complete the film in time for its release.

The film has several other impressive statistics that bode well for the upcoming film’s visual effects.

According to The Creators Project, the $160-million blockbuster had 762 visual effects crewmembers working on its 960 shots. Four of those CGI artists were specifically tasked with creating Godzilla’s scales, and it took them six months to do so.

The filmmakers were also keen on making Godzilla’s bark as big as his bite. His roar was recorded through a speaker array blasting 100,000 watts of sound in order to make it feel more real. The sound reverberates over three miles.

The film stars Bryan Cranston in his first leading gig since Breaking Bad’s finale.

The Movie Bit has made a video compiling all the statistics from both the production of the feature, as well as the nitty-gritty measurements of what this monster would look like if it were actually real.

Godzilla may only have 60 teeth, but each canine is about 4-feet-long and 2-feet wide—about the size of a thin (and Hattori Hanzo-sharp) boogie board. It would take 90,000 tons of water to fill the monster to its brim.

    The Monster’s Stats:

Height: 355ft (108.2m) Godzilla’s towering height in the 2014 film—the tallest onscreen incarnation ever

Tail: 550ft 4in (167.74m) Total length of Godzilla’s spiked tail

Volume: 89,724 m3 Godzilla’s total volume in the 2014 film

Volume: 90,000 tons Godzilla’s volume if filled with water

Teeth: 1.73ft (53cm) Depth of Godzilla’s canine teeth at their widest point

Teeth: 3.51ft (1.07m)  Length from the root to the tips of Godzilla’s canine teeth

Teeth: 60 Teeth in Godzilla’s mouth

Roar: 3 miles (4.83km) Approximate distance Godzilla’s roar reverberates. (100,000W Power of the 12-foot-high, 18-foot-wide speaker array from which the sound designers blasted Godzilla’s roar to record the sound in a “real world” context)

Feet: 58ft (17.66m) Total width of Godzilla’s feet across the widest point

Feet: 60ft (18.18m) Length of Godzilla’s footprint from toe to heel

Fins: 89 Dorsal fins spiking down Godzilla’s back from his head to the tip of his tail
