    MUMBAI: Bright Lights Media has selected Globecast to provide a comprehensive suite of services for the launch of a new High Definition pay-TV channel in Southeast Asia called Simply Money.

     

    The HD channel will be carried on the MEASAT-3 satellite, the premier satellite for HD channel distribution across the wider Asia Pacific region. MEASAT-3 is co-located with MEASAT-3a and MEASAT-3b at 91.5°E, creating Asia’s most vibrant and robust video hotslot.

     

    Producing locally relevant high-quality personal finance-lifestyle content, Simply Money will also acquire programming from around the world, carefully selected for viewers in Southeast Asia.

     

    Globecast will be supplying Simply Money with an end-to-end media management solution from its media centre in Mediapolis, Singapore. The solution includes fully managed playout, content preparation and quality control. Globecast will also be providing regulatory compliance review and editing to ensure that content is compliant with regulatory requirements for distribution across Southeast Asia.

     

    Bright Lights Media CEO Anshuman Misra said, “We are very pleased to engage with Globecast, using a range of its services to ensure both high-quality output as well as a cost-effective result.     MUMBAI: MEASAT Satellite Systems has decided to tie up with Globecast to distribute Scripps Networks’ channel HGTV which will cater to the home and lifestyle category in Asia.

     

    The channel will launch on 4 December with content on property, hybrid construction, design and extreme spaces. HGTV will be beamed off MEASAT 3.

     

    Globecast Asia senior VP of sales and marketing Soo Yew Weng said, “Globecast is honoured to work again with MEASAT and Scripps Networks’ in bringing HGTV to audiences in Asia. Globecast looks forward to HGTV becoming as popular here as it is in the US, where it has been ranked as the number one lifestyle brand, reaching over 99 million households.”

     

    Globecast provides playout, content preparation and select post-production services for all four of Scripps Networks’ regional channels-HGTV, Asian Food Channel, Food Network and Travel Channel across the APAC.

     

    Says MEASAT senior VP sales and marketing Raj Malik, “MEASAT is delighted to continue working with Globecast to bring more high quality programming to Asia. We see great potential in HGTV and look forward to be part of its launch to the market.     From Russia with love

    MUMBAI: As the second largest television market in the world which is only expanding with each passing year, India has witnessed a steady inflow of international channels in recent times.

    As purveyor of all things TV, indiantelevision.com, today kicks-off a brand new series which profiles all such channels aiming to bring a more global, all-round perspective to Indian drawing rooms.

    We debut with the Russian news channel Russia Today (RT), which arrived on Indian shores in 2009, courtesy a deal with GlobeCast.

    The first channel to report live from the North Pole, RT’s maiden broadcast was on 10 December 2005. Two years later, its Arabic counterpart Rusiya Al-Yaum was launched. Following suit were: RT en Espanol (Spanish) in 2009, RT America in 2010 and RT Documentary in 2011.

    Having made its mark internationally, RT proceeded to test Indian waters in 2009 as part of its endeavour to expand its Asian footprint.

    Back then, it was available for viewing in around seven million homes. Today, it boasts a reach of 60 million subscribers with a viewership of about 300 million.

    Three satellites carry RT for viewers in India: Measat 3a, Insat 4B and AsiaSat 3S. Denizens of Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata, Bangalore and Hyderabad can watch RT on their cable network and major satellite platforms across the rest of the country.
        
    On the day it was launched, RT was available for viewing only on WWIL, Dish Hits, InCable, 7 Star (cable operators), Big TV and Sun Direct DTH platforms.

    Today, it is also available on InCable Net, Hathway (cable operators), Dish TV, DD Direct Plus and Airtel DTH.

    However, it is highly unlikely that RT is making any money out of its distribution in the country. In fact it is highly probably that it is digging deep into its pockets to pay carriage fees to the cable and DTH operators. “In the case of DD Direct Plus it could be paying anywhere between Rs 1.5 to Rs 2.5 crore as carriage fees per year while on private DTH operators it could go up to Rs 5 crore per annum,” says a senior media consultant.

    With a tagline that reads ‘Question More’, who does RT cater to in India? While the country is home to a sizeable Russian population – either expats or regular tourists, RT claims it does not necessarily cater to the Russian diaspora but to ‘anybody who can speak English’.

    What do viewers get to watch on RT? Says RT MD Alexey Nikolov: “RT covers major international stories and significant regional developments in politics, society and finance for viewers of all backgrounds and nationalities.”

    Regular RT viewers observe that the channel discusses all major political issues and current affairs, albeit with a Russian perspective. While the news caters to a global audience, there’s some amount of India-specific content too. Of late, the coverage has included the Delhi gang rape, India being awarded permanent observer status in the Arctic Council, defence contracts with Russia, Indo-China military cooperation and potential expansion of major foreign multi-brand retailers in India.

    More specifically, some of the popular shows on RT include ‘Cross Talk’, ‘The Kieser Report’, ‘Breaking the Set’, ‘The Big Picture’ and ‘Larry King Live’ hosted by Larry King who switched from CNN to RT with this show. “What makes RT stand out among other news channels is that we cover stories that most other media outlets either ignore or dismiss, or on which, they provide a one-sided take,” exults Nikolov.

    As things stand, RT does not have any bureau in India to cover news from here. While it works with a number of stringers across the country, when asked, it was unwilling to share the exact number with indiantelevision.com.

    However, in April this year, RT did launch their own video news agency named Ruptly, which works with various stringers and videographers across the globe. Earlier on, the channel also had a dedicated correspondent named Priya Sridhar, who would report about happenings in India. She has now moved on.

    A huge list of hotels show RT on their screens, including the Taj Mahal, The Leela, Hyatt, Marriot, The Lalit and others. Hotels are keen to carry international channels because of the diverse visitors they attract from foreign countries. Although it is available in HD (high definition), as of now, it is limited to the SD format.

    On Airtel DTH (Direct to Home), RT is available a la carte for Rs 5 while on Big TV, the rate is Rs 20. Sun DTH and Dish TV air the channel only in packs, along with other English news channels, while DD Direct Plus is the only channel which offers it free.

    BENGALURU: Dish, a leading pay-TV provider in the US announced the launch of Asianet, Asianet Plus, Asianet News and Asianet Movies to its lineup. Additionally, Dish‘s broadcast of Asianet Movies marks the US premiere of the Malayalam film channel. Earlier, three of Asianet‘s channels were available in the US on the France Telcom subsidiary GlobeCast.

    Industry sources reveal that Asianet‘s agreement with GlobeCast ends on June 30 and the association will be terminated. “Dish is a one stop shop for the Indian, no, Asian diaspora. Be it Vijay TV or the Star Network channels, or other bigwigs of Indian television broadcasting like the channels of Zee or Sony, all are on Dish, so it makes sense for Asianet to be on the Dish platform. It‘s a win-win situation for all,” explained the source about Asianet‘s shift.

    Asianet Communications MD K. Madhavan statement in a press release seems to endorse this fact, “When Asianet entered the US market in 2003, our overarching goal was to expand the presence of our special programming. Partnering with Dish to launch the Asianet channels allows us to realize this dream of providing yet another incredible addition to the lineup of Malayalam content in the United States”.

    “We are pleased to exclusively offer this programming on satellite and proud to debut Asianet Movies for the first time in the U.S. Dish has long offered an impressive South Asian channel lineup, and we are dedicated to the consistent pursuit of the best news and entertainment tailored to a variety of language groups,” said Dish director of international programming Sruta Vootukuru.

    As the US leader in international programming with more than 280 ethnic channels in 29 languages, Dish is the exclusive satellite pay-TV platform to offer this leading Malayalam-language content.

    The Malayalam Asianet programming package is now available to customers for $24.99 per month. Effective June 20, all Malayalam: Mega Pack or Surya a la carte customers will be eligible to subscribe to Asianet as an add-on package for a monthly price of $15.

    MUMBAI: Global content management and delivery firm GlobeCast has been selected by Sky Italia to provide HDTV contribution for the World Cup of Football from the International Broadcasting Centre (IBC) in Munich to Sky’s headquarters outside of Milan, Italy.

    The event kicks off on 9 June in Germany and airs in India on ESPN Star Sports.

    This solution includes both fibre and satellite contribution to ensure a seamless broadcast.

    The contribution service provided by GlobeCast is an end-to-end solution including routing and transmission via fibre, as well as the provision of encoding and decoding equipment in HD.

    GlobeCast will also provide HD satellite coverage as a backup for the event, using capacity on Eutelsat’s Eurobird 3 satellite at 33º East. This satellite coverage will guarantee a high level of reliability and service quality, especially with the inauguration of the latest HD-ready member of GlobeCast’s proprietary fleet of Satellite Newsgathering (SNG) vehicles. This particular truck is the first such all-HD vehicle in the Italian market.

    The service package provided by GlobeCast also includes a 24 hour on-site customer support and technical assistance desk, staffed by GlobeCast’s technical experts.

    Globecast delivers ESPN Classic to the UK via satellite

    MUMBAI: US sports broadcaster ESPN has struck a deal with GlobeCast, a global content management and delivery company, to deliver ESPN Classic, the company’s first UK-dedicated sports channel, to the Sky Digital platform.

    Launched this week using Globecast’s capacity on the Eurobird satellite, ESPN Classic is devoted entirely to the greatest moments and legends of sport with a mix of all-time classic highlights, matches, movies, interviews, profiles and documentaries.

    GlobeCast’s solution for ESPN includes connectivity from the broadcaster’s playout facility in West London to GlobeCast, where the feed is encoded, multiplexed then sent to GlobeCast’s Brookmans Park teleport for uplink to the Sky Digital platform using GlobeCast’s Eurobird capacity. ESPN Classic is available 24 hours a day on Sky’s EPG channel 442.

    GlobeCast has an established relationship with ESPN Classic, providing a content and delivery services for the channel’s existing French, Italian and European feeds via Astra at 19.2ºE, Hotbird at 13ºE and Sirius 2 4.8ºE respectively.
