Globecast unveils content-sharing platform for sports rights holders

MONACO: Sports broadcasters are getting a new weapon in the battle for eyeballs. Globecast will showcase Content Exchange, its latest media platform solution, at Sportel 2025 in Monaco from 20 to 22 October.

The platform, designed for rights holders and sports federations, offers a unified, all-IP infrastructure combining satellite, fibre and hybrid cloud technologies. It enables seamless acquisition, processing and delivery of both live and on-demand content, creating a secure hub that connects content owners with broadcasters and unlocks new monetisation opportunities.

“With the launch of Globecast Content Exchange, we’re transforming the way sports content is delivered and shared,” said Globecast head of digital media development Steve MacMurray. “It gives rights holders unmatched flexibility and control to distribute highlights, live feeds and on-demand content to partners and fans worldwide, all through a simplified, scalable and secure platform.”

Visitors to stand G.05 can experience the technology first-hand. The solution promises scalable transmission and processing for demanding media applications, offering rightsholders greater control over distribution in today’s hybrid media landscape.

Globecast will also spotlight its recent sports collaborations. Racer  Network, which will broadcast over 300 live motorsport events in 2025, has partnered with the company to enhance quality and streamline delivery using advanced graphics and cloud playout. Meanwhile, Globecast’s extended partnership with Premier Padel as global delivery partner for the 2025 and 2026 seasons supports the sport’s international expansion through a fully IP- and cloud-based distribution model.

More sports feeds more cost-effectively: Globecast announces Globecast Managed Cloud Network

MUMBAI: Globecast, the global solutions provider for media, has announced the launch of Globecast Managed Cloud Network (Globecast MCN), responding to pressures across the sports broadcasting market for more content more of the time, to affiliates and viewers.

Liz McParland, Global Contribution Worldwide and Commercial Director of Contribution UK, said, “The sports broadcasting market is often at the forefront of innovation, given the level of competition for both viewers and sports rights, with the latter increasing in cost. Responding to multiple customer enquiries, Globecast has continued to grow its cloud platform services, the result being Globecast MCN. This allows affiliates to access more content from more sports, with the Globecast quality guarantee, at price points that reflect current market requirements.”

Taking a tennis tournament as the example, Globecast MCN allows multiple additional feeds to be fed into the cloud at the nearest POP, transported across the world in the cloud and then received at an affiliate’s nearest POP. This allows the affiliate to air the content – following matches they choose – without the additional cost of more fibre-delivered feeds and the risk of purely public internet. As competitions move from location to location, this also provides a very simple way to deliver content without the need for onsite installation, with the processing and management complexity handled in the cloud. We can also take care of last-mile connectivity too.

Globecast supplies an end-to-end solution, including management, signal monitoring – Globecast has multiple, dedicated 24×7 MCRs around the world with comprehensive monitoring capabilities – cloud routing, content security and transport layers. This can include the management of affiliates via a Globecast-provided 24/7 helpdesk. The Globecast MCN routing allows affiliates to request only the feed(s) they need to save bandwidth costs.

Globecast MCN sits alongside Globecast BN, the company’s fibre backbone solution, and Globecast XN, its public internet suite of services.

McParland said, “This is not only about supplying additional feeds, it can also be used for the delivery of primary feeds where fibre or satellite isn’t possible or is prohibitively expensive. At Globecast we work to the mantra of delivering content from anywhere to anywhere, partnering with our customers to fully understand their issues. Combined with our years of experience, we then create platforms that overcome these issues and create new opportunities. There’s no one-size-fits-all approach. We have created fluid, flexible services that we can supply as required.”

  • Globecast brings the total Africa Cup of Nations to the world in 4K alongside VOD content creation

Globecast brings the total Africa Cup of Nations to the world in 4K alongside VOD content creation

MUMBAI: Globecast, the global solutions provider for media, is extending its relationship with the organisers and rights holders of the Total Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt, bringing the 2019 event to the world. The tournament began on June 21st with the final taking place on July 19th.

Globecast is working in partnership with the Egyptian Local Organising Committee (LOC), Lagardère Sports, managers and marketers of sports rights across Europe and Africa, and the Confédération Africaine de Football (CAF). For additional on-the-ground logistics support, Globecast has partnered with local specialists KAR Technology, who have provided logistical expertise and liaison with the LOC. Globecast has also collaborated closely with Iris Media, who have provided SNGs as well as additional technical support.

Globecast has a longstanding relationship with CAF and is providing a range of services in 2019, including contribution, distribution and VOD content preparation and storage. For the first time, the opening match and the final are being broadcast in 4K, using HEVC encoding. In total there are 52 matches being held in four cities across Egypt.

At each stadium, Globecast is supplying two flyaway SNGs. The first is uplinking the main feed, plus a second feed with additional pre-match footage to build more involvement in the event. Full redundancy is provided by the second SNG. The primary feeds are received at Globecast’s Paris teleport and are then turned around for onward distribution. The backup feed is received in London.

To increase ROI and viewer engagement, VOD content is being prepared by Globecast using its Content Marketplace service, a module of its Digital Media Hub content processing suite. Signals are transcoded into multiple formats and resolutions, including full broadcast quality, clipped and metadata added. Each broadcast affiliate using the system then receives new content notifications to promote download.

Philippe Bernard, Chairman and CEO, Globecast, said, “We are really pleased to have been selected by the Egyptian LOC, extending our relationship with CAF and Lagadère Sports. This year sees particular innovation with the use of both 4K and VOD content supply, with our innovative Content Marketplace providing broadcast affiliates with new ways to extend viewer engagement. We have worked very closely with both KAR and Iris Media and their help has been invaluable. This is a major tournament that needs very high level technical and logistical expertise and between them they have provided exactly what’s required. The LOC has done a fantastic job to organise this event, with Egypt being asked to step in late in the process. What a fantastic sporting spectacle the 2019 event is.”

  • Major international sport owners and organisers A.S.O. signs multi-year agreement to use Globecast’s Digital Media Hub for content sharing

Major international sport owners and organisers A.S.O. signs multi-year agreement to use Globecast’s Digital Media Hub for content sharing

MUMBAI: Globecast, the global technical solutions provider for media, has announced that Amaury Sport Organisation (A.S.O.), owners and organisers of multiple globally renowned sports events, has selected Content Marketplace, part of Globecast’s Digital Media Hub, for clipped content sharing.

A.S.O. organises 210 days of competition per year, with 90 events in 25 countries. Content is shared with A.S.O. customers including television channels, the wider media and also A.S.O for internal use.

Digital Media Hub is Globecast’s suite of services for sport and live events. Facilitating cross-platform live content publishing as well as VOD content creation and distribution – using the Content Marketplace module – it significantly increases content monetisation opportunities in what are highly competitive markets.

Having trialled a version of Content Marketplace at last year’s Rally Dakar, A.S.O has signed a multi-year agreement to use the media management and content sharing platform across multiple events. Via a specially designed website, content is transcoded to multiple formats and then clipped. File data can then be associated with the video: for example, scripts, cue sheets or a press kit. Access and rights management is also handled, via a simple user interface, with download and viewing statistics available.

François-Régis Grenot, VP Sales France at Globecast, said, “Using Content Marketplace, A.S.O is satisfying the ever-growing number of their customers who want their content via a simple-to-use system that is highly automated. We developed Digital Media Hub, of which this is a key part, over several years and it’s now a very evolved platform. We’re so pleased that a customer of this stature is benefiting from our expertise.”

  • Cartoon Network partners with Globecast for pop-up channel technical services in Asia

Cartoon Network partners with Globecast for pop-up channel technical services in Asia

Singapore – Globecast, the global solutions provider for media, has announced that Cartoon Network has extended its longstanding partnership with Globecast for the launch of two innovative, market-leading pop-up kids channels.

Following discussions earlier this year with Globecast that explored the possibilities, Cartoon Network launched pop-up channels in Singapore with Singtel and in the Philippines with Cignal. In Singapore, the channel, called “Pop & Watch”, was available free on Singtel’s IPTV service, as well as its Singtel TV GO and Singtel CAST mobile apps from June 12-21. Cartoon Network Classics was available as a pay-per-view channel on Cignal TV from May 3 to June 2.

James Crossland, Senior Vice President of International Operations for Turner, a WarnerMedia company, said, “These pop-up channels were something new for us in Asia and we were really pleased with the results. We’re always looking to offer our broadcast partners innovative new platforms to showcase our content and it’s important to everyone that the technical services are seamless and hitch-free.”

Globecast augmented its existing media management, playout and content archiving agreement with WarnerMedia to provide technical services for the channels. WarnerMedia in London delivered content to Globecast’s ingest and playout system in Singapore. The content was then supplied as transmission-ready files and these were automatically ingested. Much of the content was already held in archive by Globecast and was restored to playout as required by the daily playlist, and any missing material was highlighted well in advance of playout. Distribution to the affiliates was handled using existing WarnerMedia satellite capacity.

Graphics were also added to the channels. Comprehensive testing was carried out before launch, including full trial runs, with Globecast providing complete pop-up channel monitoring, 24/7, while on air.

Shakunt Malhotra, VP of Operations, Globecast Asia, said, “This was an exciting project and we expect to see more of these requirements on a global basis. Cartoon Network leveraged our expertise to manage content and our optimized workflow, which was ideal for for quick launch and smooth operation. This project was an excellent way to maximize content use and therefore ROI, extending brand reach.”

  • Globecast introduces virtual networking for high bandwidth IP-over-satellite connectivity for the enterprise market

Globecast introduces virtual networking for high bandwidth IP-over-satellite connectivity for the enterprise market

MUMBAI: Globecast, the global solutions provider for media, has announced Globecast Virtual Networking (GCVN), a new service offering that brings two-way, high bandwidth, IP-over-satellite connectivity to the enterprise market. It provides fast, reliable IP connectivity anywhere and anytime where terrestrial networks fail or are inconsistent.

With GCVN, media event producers and content creators in the B2B space can easily deliver streaming, file transfers, Wi-Fi, 4K, 8K and 360-degree live content using native IP-based satellite transmission from remote locations via a premium quality, guaranteed high-bandwidth solution. It’s ideal for corporate productions, events with high attendance where cell service bandwidth is scarce, and many situations where Internet connectivity is uncertain.

In addition, GCVN is deployable for disaster recovery/disaster avoidance. It’s useful for when a potential customer needs to quickly deploy additional IP connectivity or augment a network with additional bandwidth to avoid any issues, without having to spend the time and money to change their full-time configuration. There is a growing need for temporary, premium quality, two-way IP networks for special projects. The global service is initially available in the US, via connectivity with Globecast’s Culver City Media Center.

“We’ve developed Globecast Virtual Networking in direct response to the market demand for fast, reliable IP connectivity at any location. GCVN is perfect for corporate productions, music festivals and movie sets and events with high attendance where cell service bandwidth is scarce, or where Internet connectivity is uncertain,” explained Tim Jackson, Senior Vice President, Sales and Marketing the Americas at Globecast. “GCVN is a logical enhancement to our traditional distribution, contribution and media management services that utilize the satellite, fiber, cloud and infrastructure capabilities Globecast has provided for decades. The service comes with the same customer service and quality focus that we provide with all our offerings.”

GCVN was born out of Globecast’s relationship with Santa Barbara-based CBTV, which provides news/event remote connectivity via satellite, specializing in Internet protocol networked transmissions. The two companies began working together in 2018 when CBTV started supplying RF/modem modulation, IP switching, and routing equipment to connect customers using the platform to Globecast’s Culver City Media Center.

Jackson said, “From there, we took that offering and extended it, creating GCVN, a fully integrated service offering. It’s another example of how we are uniquely positioned to offer secure and reliable data delivery in what is a rapidly evolving market.”

  • CCI reduces penalty on broadcast companies for rigging bids

CCI reduces penalty on broadcast companies for rigging bids

NEW DELHI: The Competition Commission of India (CCI) on Wednesday waived the penalty imposed on Globecast and reduced by 30 per cent the penalty imposed on Essel Shyam Communication Ltd (ESCl), rechristened Planetcast, for bid-rigging in tenders for procurement of end-to-end broadcasting services for various sporting events, including the IPL-2012.

The CCI earlier found the two broadcasting companies guilty of operating a cartel amongst them in various sporting events held during the years 2011-12, including Indian Premier League-2012, an IANS news report said.

It had imposed a penalty of Rs 31.94 crore and Rs 1.33 crore on ESCl and Globecast, respectively, noting that while submitting bids for the tender floated by various broadcasters during the period July 2011 to May 2012, they exchanged information and quoted bid prices as per the arrangements arrived at amongst them.

However, the commission took up the case under “lesser penalty provisions” against Globecast following which, ESCl — now Planetcast Media Services Ltd — also approached the CCI as lesser penalty applicant during investigation.

“Keeping in view the stage at which the lesser penalty application was filed, cooperation extended in conjunction with the value addition provided by the evidences furnished by the lesser penalty applicants in establishing the existence of cartel, CCI granted Globecast and its individuals 100 per cent reduction in the penalty and 30 per cent reduction in penalty to ESCl and its individuals,” IANS quoted an official statement as saying.

“Pursuant to reduction, penalty imposed on ESCl was Rs 22.36 crore. No penalty was imposed on Globecast,” it added.
