Swiss Eagle watches out for The Expendables 3!

MUMBAI: Third in a series of ensemble comedy-action films, The Expendables 3 will feature an equally incredible series of powerful men’s watches by Swiss Eagle, one of the world’s best watchmakers. The watches, designed for and named after the film, will be seen adorning the wrists of the rugged action heroes.

The deal that tactfully aligns opportunity with value is the brainchild of Marketing & Brand Consultant Neeta Shah, for Pulp Fiction Entertainment. “Brands usually prefer to tie-up with Bollywood films either for in-film scenes or for star/actor visit. I believe in creating value propositions for both the brand and the film. The Expendables 3 resonates with the brand’s philosophy completely, both are targeting the youth – who are hardcore, sturdy and tough,” says and enthusiastic Neeta Shah.

The team at PVR Pictures is equally pleased.  Girish Wankhede, National Marketing Head for PVR Pictures said, “With the immense strength of our franchise, we needed a brand with a reputation to qualify for the entire campaign. The brand connect and the pitch with Swiss Eagle steered the same target group which was win-win for both brands. Such alliances amplify the campaign and propel the visibility.” Shah continues, “With this alliance, we have pushed the envelope. The amalgamation of The Expendables 3 and Swiss Eagle is a big breakthrough and I look forward for other such alliances.”

  • Bal Thackeray‘s death hit BO collections

Bal Thackeray‘s death hit BO collections

MUMBAI: Jab Tak Hai Jaan, Yash Chopra‘s last directorial romantic story, was awaited with much expectation which was not met by this three hour saga, looking at the public response. The film was released in direct opposition of a mass entertainer, Son Of Sardar, after much controversy on sharing screen space with Yash Raj Film having cornered a chunk of better single screens using their Salman Khan starrer Ek Tha Tiger as leverage thus leaving little for Son Of Sardar.

This offered the audience an option and it showed on the collections as Jab Tak Hai Jaan could manage only Rs 152.3 million on Tuesday (13 November), the Diwali day, then peaking on the next, the New Year day with Rs 195.4 million and then finding its level on Thursday with Rs 144.5 million.

The collection figures tapered thereafter; Sunday which collected Rs 99.6 million could have been better by at least Rs 20 million as the film‘s collections suffered due to closure of cinemas in Maharashtra for most part of the weekend due to the demise of Balasaheb Thackeray.

According to Girish Wankhede of Cinemax chain, all the 66 group screens in Maharashtra had to cancel three shows each on Saturday and all five shows each on Sunday, these shows being the cream of the week. Same was the case with other multiplex screens. The collections also suffered to an extent in the North due to closure of Wave group multiplexes from Saturday afternoon and whole of Sunday following a tragedy in the owners‘ family. Jab Tak Hai Jaan ended its six-day festive weekend with Rs 807.3 million.

Son Of Sardar had to fight for screens till the end and distributors could not advertise in time (where all the movie was going to be screen). However, the film did hit the screens as scheduled with less number of screens than they would have liked to open. An old fashioned action comedy about two warring families, the film met with mixed response. However, its cluttered cast and their antics earned it the label of ‘entertainer‘. The film opened with a moderate Rs 100.72 million on Tuesday, the Diwali day, as expected it peaked the next day being the New Year day with Rs 162.1 million before settling down to average levels. The film suffered on Saturday and Sunday for the same reasons as Jab Tak Hai Jaan and went on to end its six day festival season with Rs 660.2 million.

1920 – Evil Returns could enjoy a limited run despite holding steady in the second week since the film had to be discontinued from most screens to make way for new releases, Jab Tak Hai Jaan and Son Of Sardar, on Tuesday. The film still managed to collect a decent Rs 47 million taking its tally to Rs 233 million.

Luv Shuv Tey Chicken Khurana collected Rs 13.5 million in its second week taking its total to Rs 78.5 million.

Student Of The Year mopped up approx Rs 10 million in its fourth week. It has netted Rs 608 million so far.

English Vinglish collected Rs five million taking its tally at the end of the sixth week to Rs 373.5 million.

OMG Oh My God! has collected Rs 3.8 million in its seventh week. The movie‘s box office score after seven weeks is Rs 769.3 million.

  • Ek Tha Tiger ticket rates to cost 12 to 16 per cent more

Ek Tha Tiger ticket rates to cost 12 to 16 per cent more

MUMBAI: Salman Khan films are selling like hot cakes. Multiplexes have, therefore, decided to take advantage of Salman‘s popularity and hike the ticket prices of the star‘s upcoming film Ek Tha Tiger by as much as 12-16 per cent.

Said Cinemax DGM, Girish Wankhede, “The price of Ek Tha Tiger will cost more by about Rs 20 per ticket. After all it (the film) is a premium product. This kind of thing is done during festive seasons. And as of now, a Salman Khan film commands higher premium than before.”

But the same will not be the case in case of single-screens. Says Premiere Theatre manager Kamat, “No, we aren‘t going to raise our ticket rates. We are yet to decide whether we would have an extra show at 9 in the morning. We shall decide once we come to know about the demand for the film once the advance booking starts.”

Earlier, tickets of Salman Khan releases like Ready and Bodyguard had been priced higher than regular rates.

  • Dark Knight Rises generates Rs 250 mn in opening weekend

MUMBAI: The Dark Knight Rises, the latest Batman movie from the Warner Bros. Entertainment, which stars Christian Bale as Batman, has collected Rs 250 million in its opening weekend in India.

The first weekend collections are more than what Dar Media had paid to secure the domestic distribution rights of the film. The distributor has paid almost Rs 180 million for the all-India theatrical distribution rights; the only other Hollywood film to have been sold to a single theatrical distributor was Spider-Man 3, which was released in 2007. Incidentally, the film‘s Indian distribution rights were sold by Sony Pictures Entertainment to Percept Picture for around Rs 150 million.

The first of the Batman series, Batman Begins, was released in 2005 across 70 screens (57 prints) and generated around Rs 13.6 million in the first three days from the Indian box-office, while the sequel, The Dark Knight, which released in 2008 across 250 screens (210 prints) earned around Rs 38 million in the opening weekend, according to Warner Bros.

The record for being the highest Hollywood grosser in India in the opening weekend is held by The Amazing Spider-Man released on 29 June. The film generated Rs 340 million for Sony Pictures Entertainment.

However, The Dark Knight Rises was released with around 650 prints across 700 screens, while The Amazing Spider-Man released across 1,500 screens.

“The Christoper Nolan film opened very well. It ran to almost houseful capacity on Friday and during the weekend too, the frenzy continued. But it would have been another picture, had the film been released in 3D, since the ticket prices are higher for 3D films,” said Cinemax DGM Girish Wankhede.
