    Disney signs VoD deal in Germany

    MUMBAI: Disney’s international TV distribution arm Buena Vista International Television (BVITV) has concluded a multi-year agreement with German video-on-demand (Vod) operator HanseNet.

    The German firm will air a selection of upcoming, current and library movies from BVITV’s portfolio on its new set top box VOD and TV service Alice homeTV.

    With this agreement, Alice homeTV’s customers will be able to enjoy a selection of current and upcoming features from Walt Disney Pictures, Touchstone Pictures and Miramax Films via the new set top box service.

    Titles include The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe, its upcoming sequel The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian and Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest. The agreement also includes recent titles such as Flightplan and Cinderella Man. Subscribers will also be able to enjoy a selection of library features, and a selection of local German acquisitions such as Die Wilden Kerle 3.

    The agreement also includes provisions for co-operation between BVITV and Alice against piracy of BVITV’s content, while at the same time appropriately safeguarding the privacy of Alice’s service subscribers and remaining consistent with local law. Under the agreement, Alice will forward notices to its internet subscribers allegedly engaged in the unauthourised distribution of BVITV’s copyrighted works, without identifying the subscribers to BVITV.

    Endemol rolls out comedy format in Germany

    MUMBAI: Endemol International has signed deals on its 8 Out of 10 Cats comedy format in Germany, Denmark and Sweden.

    The show is also being piloted in other markets and further deals are expected to be announced soon.

    In Germany, the series will launch later this year on Sat 1. It launched last month on TV4 in Sweden and TV2 in Denmark. The Swedish version is called 100% and is presented by Adam Alsing, who previously hosted Big Brother.

    Created by Endemol U.K.’s Zeppotron,,the series first aired in the U.K., where it recently completed a second season run on Channel 4 in a prime time Friday-night slot.

    Deutsche Telecom to use Microsoft’s IPTV technology in Germany

    MUMBAI: Europe’s biggest telecommunications group Deutsche Telekom will use Microsoft software to power new internet-based television services it plans to offer in Germany before the end of 2006.

    The tie up will see the service launched across Deutsche Telekom’s VDSL network using a Microsoft IPTV platform. The companies have promised a range of entertainment products, including regular programming in standard and high-definition formats, as well as interactive TV, digital video recording and video on demand. The latter feature will allow viewers to access selected feature films, TV series or documentaries at the touch of a button.

    The deal cements Microsoft’s position as the leading supplier to providers of internet protocol TV, with 13 telecoms groups now installing or testing its IPTV software. It also represents a milestone for Deutsche Telekom in its bid to be one of the first telecoms groups to offer high-definition TV, voice and data services on new, ultra-fast internet lines.

    Deutsche Telecom previously had been conducting a trial of the Microsoft IPTV software. The service is planned for launch in mid 2006 in 10 major German cities including Berlin, Hamburg, Cologne and Munich. Other Microsoft IPTV customers include AT&T, Telecom Italia and Swisscom.

    T-Mobile acquires rights for 2006 football World Cup for seven European firms

    MUMBAI: Football’s governing body Fifa’s marketing agency Infront Sports and Media has signed an extensive agreement with mobile phone operator T-Mobile International for mobile broadcast rights covering all 64 matches of the 2006 Fifa World Cup

    The deal covers seven European territories including host country Germany, Austria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Hungary, Slovakia and the United Kingdom.

    T-Mobile acquired the rights for the non-exclusive transmission of near-live and/or delayed video clips of key match footage such as goals via mobile networks to mobile phones. Additionally the rights package includes access to archive video material of the 2002 Fifa World Cup.

    In Germany, T-Mobile is entitled to offer live streaming transmissions of 20 selected 2006 FIFA World Cup matches to its customers. The transmission is possible over telecommunications networks (GPRS/UMTS) on a pay basis.

    Infront executive director Oliver Seibert said, “We are delighted about this extensive agreement with T-Mobile as the mobile arm of Deutsche Telekom, one of the official partners of the 2006 Fifa World Cup. In Europe, mobile broadcast rights agreements have now been signed covering most of the important football markets. This guarantees a strong mobile coverage during the 2006 Fifa World Cup reaching millions of fans.”
