Julia Roberts presented BAFTA to great friend George Clooney

MUMBAI: It was great moment for the Hollywood fraternity to see two of their best actors — Julia Roberts and George Clooney — come together on stage and appreciate each other.

At the 2013 BAFTA LA Awards on Saturday night, Roberts, who co-starred with Clooney in Ocean’s Eleven presented the 52-year-old with the Stanley Kubrick Award for Excellence in Film.

Reportedly, Julia was in a very jolly mood when she came on stage. She joked: “There are two obvious reasons why I was chosen to do this: one, Brad Pitt was out of town. Two, Matt Damon, he’s in town, but he was unavailable.”

However, the actor took a serious turn to praise Clooney, who has been her co-actor, director and producer too. “All of which he is immeasurably gifted at,” she said.

How could Clooney not have reciprocated? He equally appreciated the Pretty Woman actor. “It has been such a pleasure to watch the woman you have become. It’s very hard for me to be just straight nice because she’ll get me later. But just an amazing mother, an amazing wife and a great, great friend. It’s really an honour to have her here.”

And they had a nice evening even after they stepped down from the stage. They sat next to each other and were seen laughing and chatting.

‘The Monuments Men’ commences production in Germany

MUMBAI: Columbia Pictures and Twentieth Century Fox have announced that ‘The Monuments Men‘, a Smokehouse production directed by and starring George Clooney, has started production in Berlin, Germany. The action-thriller is written by Clooney and Grant Heslov, based on the book by Robert M. Edsel with Bret Witter. Clooney and Heslov also produce the film through their Smokehouse Productions. It is their first production since winning the Academy Award for Best Picture for their work on ‘Argo‘.

Barbara A. Hall is executive producer. ‘The Monuments Men‘ is a co-production with Germany‘s Siebente Babelsberg Film, a subsidiary of Studio Babelsberg AG. Charlie Woebcken, Christoph Fisser and Henning Molfenter serve as co-producers. Sony Pictures will release the film domestically, with Twentieth Century Fox handling international territories.

The film stars Clooney, Matt Damon, Bill Murray, Cate Blanchett, Jean Dujardin, Bob Balaban, Hugh Bonneville, and John Goodman.

Based on the true story of the greatest treasure hunt in history, ‘The Monuments Men‘ focuses on an unlikely World War II platoon, tasked by FDR with going into Germany to rescue artistic masterpieces from Nazi thieves and returning them to their rightful owners. It would be an impossible mission: with the art trapped behind enemy lines, and with the German army under orders to destroy everything as the Reich fell, how could these guys – seven museum directors, curators, and art historians, all more familiar with Michelangelo than the M-1 – possibly hope to succeed? But as the Monuments Men, as they were called, found themselves in a race against time to avoid the destruction of 1000 years of culture, they would risk their lives to protect and defend mankind‘s greatest achievements.

Clooney‘s crew on ‘The Monuments Men‘ includes director of photography Phedon Papamichael, ASC, Oscar nominated production designer Jim Bissell, Academy Award winning editor Stephen Mirrione, A.C.E., costume designer Louise Frogley, and five-time Oscar nominated composer Alexandre Desplat.

‘The Monuments Men‘ films in Germany and the UK through the end of June. It is scheduled for release in the US on 18 December, 2013.

  • Ben Affleck named Entertainer of the Year

Ben Affleck named Entertainer of the Year

MUMBAI: Ben Affleck has been named Entertainer of the Year by Entertainment Weekly. The actor-and-director succeeds Harry Potter star Daniel Radcliffe, who received the honour last year.
Affleck was bestowed with the accolade as he has finally reached the "pinnacle" of his career.Appearing on US morning show Good Morning America, Entertainment Weekly editor Jess Cagle explained, "We‘ve watched him grow up. He has really reached his pinnacle."
The 40-year-old Affleck, who burst onto the acting scene 15 years ago in Good Will Hunting, is delighted with the honour, particularly because he wants to make his family, wife Jennifer Garner, daughters Violet and Seraphina and nine-month-old Samuel proud.
Affleck said in a statement, "Being at a place in my life and my career where I know what I‘m trying to do, it‘s different than being 26. When you‘re younger and have the early success that I had – it sounds like the worst Hallmark cliche – but I didn‘t have anyone to share it with.
I don‘t mean I wanted someone to sit by the fire with. But when you have a family and children, you kind of see yourself reflected in them. I want to make the kinds of movies that my kids are proud of. I have higher standards, in a way, for them."
Fellow Hollywood star George Clooney, 51, praised Affleck for re-emerging on the Hollywood A-list after several rocky years, which included starring in numerous widely panned films and a high profile engagement to singer-and-actress Jennifer Lopez that was eventually called off.
George Clooney said, "Hollywood loves a comeback, and he‘s an unbelievable comeback kid."
Ben Affleck has transitioned from in front of the screen to behind it, helming critically-acclaimed films such as Gone Baby Gone, The Town and this year‘s Argo, which is being tipped for Oscar contention.
