    MIPTV 2006 lines up heavyweight keynote speaker roster; to run from 3-7 April

    MUMBAI: MIPTV featuring MILIA 2006 unveils an unprecedented keynote speaker line-up, bringing together such diverse international talents as Mark Burnett, Jonathan Miller, Ashley Highfield, former Channel 4 CEO Michael Jackson, Gary Carter and Takeshi Natsuno.

    The MIPTV/MILIA conferences, featuring over 200 speakers in 45 sessions, will take place 3 to 7 April. Reflecting current developments within the audiovisual industry, this year’s ‘TV Reloaded!’ conference programme will focus on the convergence between telco and broadcast companies, as well as On Demand and Mobile Television.

    Internationally-renowned reality show producer Mark Burnett, CEO of Mark Burnett Productions, will draw on his experience with such shows as ‘Survivor’ and ‘Apprentice,’ ‘The Contender’, and ‘Rockstar’ to look at what it takes to create next-generation audiovisual entertainment for Internet, mobile and other emerging new technology devices.

    AOL chief executive officer, Jonathan Miller, will focus his keynote on the next developments for video on internet. AOL has been pioneering audiovisual entertainment on the Internet and has recently concluded two Hollywood production deals to bring both comedy and reality shows to the web.

    BBC executive board member responsible for New Media and Technology, Ashley Highfield, is in charge of the British public broadcaster’s output on Internet, interactive TV, broadband and mobile. In the new cross-platform entertainment environment, Highfield’s conference address will cover what digital content will look like and how the industry should prepare itself for the seismic changes ahead.

    As president of programming at IAC/InterActiveCorp, former Channel Four chief executive Michael Jackson, heads IAC’s plans to develop, acquire and distribute programming across multi-platforms. A key issue facing all companies bringing content to these new platforms and one which Jackson will be joining a keynote chat session at MIPTV featuring MILIA, is, how the digital rights landscape will evolve given the digital platforms. Jackson will also share his vision as to how entertainment and commerce will evolve on the internet.

    Gary Carter, recently appointed chief creative officer, New Platforms, FremantleMedia, currently has the challenge of creating brands and concepts for new platforms such as mobile, broadband, game consoles and IPTV. His “Whose TV is it Anyway?” keynote will examine what the ‘digital future’ actually means for content creators and active audiences.

    Japan’s leading mobile operator NTT DoCoMo has led the world with its innovative mobile business models and services. The company’s senior vice president & managing director, Multimedia Services, Takeshi Natsuno, will explain NTT DoCoMo’s plans for mobile television, as well as his visions for the convergence of entertainment and commerce.

  • Gary Carter to head FremantleMedia’s new platforms division

    MUMBAI: Format creator FremantleMedia has announced that Gary Carter, who is the company’s senior executive VP, worldwide entertainment, has been appointed to the newly created position of chief creative officer, new platforms.
    In this new role, he will be responsible for creating new brands and concepts specifically for new platforms such as mobile, broadband, game consoles and IPTV.
    Carter will manage a team of development executives whose focus will be to create new brands and concepts specifically for new platforms and will also work closely with executives in FremantleMedia Licensing Worldwide (FLW) who are already responsible for exploiting the company’s TV brands across multimedia channels.
    In addition, he will also work with third party developers to acquire formats that can be developed for new platforms. Carter is based in London and Amsterdam.
    Carter has also been appointed FLW acting CEO. In his acting position, Carter will be responsible for exploiting FremantleMedia’s many strong brands off screen and developing product and promotional associations that enhance and extend consumers’ experience of each property, including brand licensing, music publishing, online and interactive, home entertainment, business diversification and archive sales.
    Carter has worked in FremantleMedia Worldwide Entertainment since January 2005, having been a consultant for the company since August 2003. He worked closely with the division to set the overall strategic and creative direction and the operational agenda. He also provided central support to the development, acquisition and exploitation of entertainment formats, which have international potential and drove entertainment development activities across the company globally.
    Carter said, “I believe that we are living through profound changes in entertainment, not just in production and distribution, but in form. I’m excited to have this opportunity to explore the world of entertainment creativity is opening up through technology.”

  • Gary Carter to conduct session at MIPTV 2003

    PARIS: Renowned format producer and general director of Field Media Practice, Gary Carter will conduct a session on ‘Coaching Creativity’ during MIPTV 2003 on 25 March at 3 pm.
    MIPTV (International Television Program Market) is an international television programme market organised by Reed Midem, the international trade events in Cannes and overseas.
    Carter, one of the leading format producers of shows such as Survivor, Who wants to be a Millionaire and Big Brother , will be interviewed by Virginia Mouseler. Mouseler is the General Manager of The Wit , a company that specialises in the research of new TV programmes worldwide.
    Besides Carter, a selection of speakers will also address key issues in relation to the format phenomenon during MIPTV 2003.
    Carter will speak about the creative process and its outcomes and provide in-depth analysis on the creation of the top international formats. He will discuss as to how creativity and innovation can be stimulated in the TV business.
    Zimbabwe born Gary Carter has a colourful career graph as an actor, theatre director, literary agent and international media executive. His career profile includes a stint at Planet 24, Sir Bob Geldof’s company that produced the controversial The Word, The Big Breakfast and Gaytime TV and developed a reality showSurvivor. He was pivotal in pioneering the licensing of television formats across Europe.
    Carter was the Executive Director of Programmes at Endemol Entertainment and during his tenure was closely associated with the conceptualisation of Who Wants To Be A Millionaire, and Big Brother.
    The second session to feature at MIPTV 2003’, From Millionaire to Joe Millionaire, will examine the expanse of the formats market. The session, to be conducted on 25 March between 3 pm and 4.30 pm, will discuss the impact of the stateside success of European formats and US broadcasters’ and producers’ response to the new wave of home-grown reality and gameshow hits.
    The key speakers for this session are head of Development and Production, Fox World (UK)- Jonathan Glazier, Vice President, Alternative Programming, Granada Entertainment (USA)- Curt Northup and Senior Vice President, Alternative Series & Specials, ABC Entertainment (USA)- Andrea Wong.
    On 26 March, the third session,conducted between 10.00 am and 12.00 pm- 5 TV formats, 5 formulas for success!, will offer a unique pitching session. Select five producers will demonstrate their internationallly acclaimed formats. The session, co-organized by IMCA – International Media Consultants Associates , with the support of NOTA will also raise questions about the TV format hits of tomorrow, new themes from creators and producers, show structure, cross-platform and off-screen revenue-generating elements, marketing and merchandising.
