Brands tip their hats to the Mahatma on Gandhi Jayanti

Mumbai: Brands have been paying a symbolic tribute to the father of the nation to mark the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti, with the symbols that the Mahatma is identified with the world over viz his spectacles, his ‘Charkha,’ the famous Dandi March and, of course, most significantly- the learnings from Bapu’s life.

    Mother Dairy

The milk & milk products major and a wholly-owned subsidiary of the National Dairy Development Board (NDDB) has rolled out a digital film on the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti 2021, urging consumers to reduce the use of plastic whenever and wherever possible from their daily lives. The digital film titled #Swachhtagrah- presumably inspired by Gandhiji’s ‘Satyagraha’- stresses on the fact that how unknowingly we have imbibed the use of plastic in everyday activities.

The film featuring actor Tisca Chopra subtly puts forward one such action point for its viewers – switch to products that avoid the use of plastic in its packaging with Mother Dairy’s Token Milk vending system, which offers an environmentally friendly, plastic packaging free milk on a wide scale.

The digital film urging consumers to join the #Swachhtagrah movement has been rolled out across all social media handles of Mother Dairy including Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube.

    Taneira

The women’s ethnic wear brand from the house of Tata launched an exclusive Khadi collection on the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti to commemorate the father of the nation. Revered as a symbol of our nation’s heritage and pride, Khadi is known to be one of the earliest forms of fabrics woven in the ancient age which went on to become the symbol of independence in the Swadeshi movement. This limited-edition collection is a unique amalgam of various indigenous crafts integrating together from different parts of the country to present the essence of the best of India under one roof, said the brand.

Many brands remembered Mahatma Gandhi via creative moment marketing posts on their social media handles paying odes to the leader’s teachings and words of wisdom.

    Cadbury Dairy Milk

The confectionary brand saluted the powerful messages advocated by the Mahatma through peaceful means with a testimonial saying: Remembering the one whose life was truly his message-  ‘The one who showed us we can gain everything by sweetness- truth, freedom, non-violence, equality, self-sufficiency.’

    McDonald’s

The fast-food company drew a symbolic ‘Charkha’ with its menu in its creative: ‘This year on #GandhiJayanti, we’re revisiting history! (order history included ) What about you?’

     Dunzo

The delivery app took on the social media trend of attributing false quotes to great people of yore by sticking a random quote to their pic with a tongue-in-cheek tribute to the Mahatma: ‘Wisdom Na Milegi Dobara.’

     Fevicol

The glue brand known for its witty marketing was on-point, as always with the heartwarming message: ‘Some teachings will stick around forever.’

  • Judwaa 2 hopes to entertain

    Judwaa 2 hopes to entertain

*Judwaa 2 came after a long gap that was filled by mediocre and non-entertaining films. There were no films in the last few months which could draw out the families from home to watch a film.

Two weeks before Diwali was not the right time to release a film but, to counter that, there was also a long holiday weekend with Dussehra on Saturday and Gandhi Jayanti holiday on Monday.

The film rode on the brand equity of the 1997 original, Judwaa, starring Salman Khan in dual role. Salman even helped promote Judwaa 2 through its promos. The film took a decent opening last Friday with Rs 155 million as Saturday improved by bounds as expected, and so did Sunday as the film put together Rs 579 million for its opening weekend.

Gandhi Jayanti holiday may have have proved to be a major boost to the film’s collections.

*Sanjay Dutt’s comeback film, Bhoomi, has flopped. The film could add little to its opening weekend, and had just made about Rs 95 million for its first week.

*Haseena Parkar proved to be another disaster. One wonders at the choice of such subjects to make films! Films and Rani Laxmi don’t work but someone somewhere thought a film on Haseena Parker will work? The film managed to collect Rs 63 million in its first week.

*Newton proved to be surprise packet as its choice as the Indian entry for the Foreign Language Oscar coincided with its Friday release. Two other films to release on the same Friday, Bhoomi and Haseena Parker, being way below par, Newton got a boost as the people’s first choice. The film, which was poor on day one, picked up to end its first week with collections of Rs 112 million.

*Lucknow Central managed to add just about Rs 75 lakh in its week two to take its two week total to Rs 110 million.

*Simran added Rs 13 million in its week two to take its two week total to Rs 158 million.

  • Dentsu and Arture reintroduce ‘Bapu’ into cashless economy

Dentsu and Arture reintroduce ‘Bapu’ into cashless economy

MUMBAI: Dentsu Webchutney, on the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti, partnered with Arture to create a way where Bapu can be experienced in both, the cash and the cashless world. Dentsu Webchutney is the digital agency from Dentsu Aegis Network while Arture is a vegan lifestyle and accessories brand headquartered in Chennai.

The film, which showcases the creation of ‘Bapu Wallets’ as a tribute to the Mahatma, also features Arture’s two co-founders — Shivani Patel and Keshsa Vasant.

Since demonetisation, more and more urban and semi-urban Indians have been steadily shifting from physical cash to card, mobile wallet and netbanking payments. While all agree that the new ‘cashless’ money is more convenient, it does not carry the symbol millions of Indians associate with. Cash in the first place: the face of Mahatma Gandhi.

Dentsu Webchutney senior creative director PG Aditya says, “This is a small tribute to Bapu, in a way we and Arture found ideal. However, will Bapu be part of our cashless economy overall? That’s something that larger financial institutions driving the cashless economy can help answer at a scalable, impactful level.”

Arture co-founder Shivani Patel adds “The idea to find a second home for Bapu in our cashless world appealed to us immensely. Arture, at a brand level itself, has incorporated Bapu’s teachings of ‘ahimsa’ and compassion into the way our products are built — 100 per cent vegan and sustainable.”

The brand has partnered with Vishwa Manav Sewa Ashram in Bihar, an NGO founded in 1997, to launch the campaign. A part of the proceeds earned through the Bapu Wallets will also be donated to this NGO, which propagates the principles of the Mahatma through their work in the state.

Ragpickers’ contribution ‘Salam Hai’ picks up PACE

MUMBAI: This Gandhi Jayanti, PACE (PET Packaging Association for Clean Environment) has launched a special initiative to recognise the contribution of grassroots recyclers – the ragpickers – who make the first and biggest contribution to the recycling of PET bottles.

Kicking off a communication campaign ‘Salam Hai’ (‘Salute’) to highlight the contribution of ragpickers in the recycling process of PET bottles, a special video campaign has been released on social media.

PET (polyethylene terephthalate) is one of the most widely used plastics for packaging applications and is 100 per cent recyclable. Discarded PET bottles are collected, sorted, cleaned, shredded, and made into washed flakes, which are then used to produce products like polyester fibre.

In India, over 70 per cent of PET waste is recycled and aids livelihoods to millions employed in the entire value chain of recycling process.

‘Salam Hai’ is themed on the life of ragpickers and their contribution to the recycling industry. The video features the ‘silent heroes’ of India who are doing their part. Today, ragpickers collect around 500,000 tons per year of post-consumer PET bottles for producing polyester fibre alone, earning around Rs 10 billion per year.

PACE secretary-general P C Joshi says: “Ragpickers are the silent heroes who stand at the beginning of the recycling value chain.”
