  • GST 2.0 reloads India’s growth story at Network18’s power-packed summit

GST 2.0 reloads India’s growth story at Network18’s power-packed summit

MUMBAI: Talk about tax reform with extra firepower Network18’s Reforms Reloaded 2025 lived up to its billing as India’s biggest policy stage, convening the nation’s top minds just as GST 2.0 kicked in on 22 September 2025. Policymakers, CEOs, economists, defence strategists, and global investors gathered in Delhi to decode how the new regime could reshape India’s economic trajectory and set the tone for its Vision 2030 leap.

The day was packed with insights, optimism, and the occasional hard truth. From GST reforms to defence indigenisation, divestment to digitisation, leaders sketched out how India could convert reform rhetoric into real, lasting impact.

Chief economic advisor V Anantha Nageswaran called GST 2.0 “a very significant landmark reform”, predicting it will provide a “very significant boost to domestic demand”. Coupled with recent tax concessions, he said, the multiplier effect would “quite definitely boost GDP numbers”, with FY26 growth expected towards the upper end of the 6.3–6.8 per cent range.

Tourism minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat emphasised that the reforms would touch lives across strata, “from a farmer to a millionaire in Mumbai,” with 95 per cent of goods seeing a reduction in taxes. This, he argued, would put more money into consumers’ pockets, spur MSMEs, and even boost domestic tourism.

Consumer affairs minister Pralhad Joshi went a step further, hailing GST 2.0 as “the biggest reform since 1975”. He announced a dedicated consumer helpline to tackle complaints about GST benefits not being passed on and praised the new online input credit refund system: “Compliances have been simplified, refunds have been made online… what can be a bigger relief for businesses?”

DIPAM secretary Arunish Chawla highlighted how reforms in capital markets were democratising investment. Despite FIIs pulling out Rs 1 lakh crore between January and August, domestic institutional investors (DIIs) poured in Rs 5 lakh crore, with two-thirds of DIIs now individual investors. “As markets stabilise, we will bring in more OFS, minority stake sales and IPOs, and exceed this year’s Rs 47,000 crore divestment target,” Chawla said, cautioning against obsession with headline figures.

Defence secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh spotlighted the government’s push for self-reliance, announcing 25–30 billion dollars in annual capex for the next decade, with 75 per cent of that to be spent within India. The move, he argued, would not only strengthen defence capabilities but also catalyse indigenous manufacturing and innovation.

Beyond GST, panellists debated India’s reform roadmap: asset monetisation, renewable energy, frontier tech, and reshaping globalisation in India’s favour. The mood was decidedly optimistic that GST 2.0, alongside these reforms, could power a competitive, consumption-led economy.

Network18 (Broadcast) CEO Avinash Kaul framed the day’s significance: “At a time when global economic shifts and technological disruption are transforming industries, Reforms Reloaded sparks future-focused conversations on governance, GST, and India’s evolving role in the global economy.”

By the end of the summit, one thing was clear: GST 2.0 isn’t just another acronym in India’s policy alphabet soup. It’s the pivot around which India’s growth story for the next decade will turn, a story that leaders at Reforms Reloaded believe could make Bharat both resilient at home and credible on the world stage.

Because when it comes to India’s economic future, the message from the summit was loud and clear: it’s time to reform, reload, and rise.

India launches major initiatives for Waves Summit 2025

MUMBAI: The ministry of information and broadcasting marked a significant milestone today with the launch of key initiatives for the upcoming World Audio Visual & Entertainment Summit (Waves) at the National Media Centre. Union Ministers Ashwini Vaishnaw and Gajendra Singh Shekhawat led the event, which highlighted India’s ambition to become a global hub for the creative economy.

The Waves Summit, envisioned as India’s answer to the Davos Economic Forum, aims to showcase the nation’s rich cultural and creative landscape, often referred to as the ‘Orange Economy.’

    Key Initiatives Launched:

    * Waves  Bazaar: A global e-marketplace connecting India’s creative talent with international markets, supporting B2B interactions across sectors like film, TV, music, animation, esports, and gaming.
    * Create in India Challenges: Three new challenges launched:

o Wah Ustad! – A platform for young classical vocalists, culminating in a grand finale at Waves 2025.

o Make the World Wear Khadi – A creative campaign to position Khadi as a global brand.

o Resonate: The EDM Challenge – Inviting global talent to showcase expertise in electronic dance music.

    * Waves Awards: Nominations open on 15 February 2025, celebrating achievements across categories like Game of the Year, Film of the Year, and Advertising Campaign of the Year.

A new challenge was also announced to encourage filmmakers to explore India’s cultural heritage and tourism, promoting the country’s vibrant traditions to national and international audiences.

Union Minister of Information &  Broadcasting Ashwini Vaishnaw said: “Waves will position India as the global capital of the creator economy, celebrating our cultural strength and innovation.”

Union Minister of Culture and Tourism  Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, added: “Our cultural heritage is not just a testament to our past but the backbone of our future on the global stage.”

Renowned filmmaker Shekhar Kapur described India as a “powerhouse of cultural and digital content”, emphasising Waves  as a critical platform to demonstrate India’s creative leadership globally.

The summit, scheduled for 2025, aims to converge audio, video, and entertainment industries, offering creators a platform to collaborate, network, and showcase their talents to a global audience.

Says a disgruntled media observer: “Twice, they have postponed it  – twice. Waves is a good initiative but the management of its rollout is something that the government needs to get in order and not just leave it to sarkari types who pay obeisance to their superiors. The prime minister may be behind it, but he is not going to execute it on the ground. IFFI has taken decades to reach the quality it has reached now. The MIB will have to put a lot of checks and balances in place to make Waves work. They can’t continue living in their echo chambers where everything they are doing is good. Shekhar Kapur as a face is history. The doubting Thomases are wondering whether it will be postponed again.”

New Delhi: One of the greatest challenges facing humanity is the day when the taps run dry. While many grapple with the basic need for cooking, washing, drinking and even farming, there are many more facing the calamities of climate, as floods and lashing storms ravage home & landscapes. Managing this water crisis is today an alarmingly high global concern. Inspired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s appeal during his Independence Day address to come together for the critical cause of water conservation with ‘JalAndolan’, Network18, India’s most diversified media conglomerate, along with Amitabh Bachchan, the campaign ambassador and Reckitt Benckiser world’s leading Hygiene Home products company with its premium brand Harpic, today announced a partnership for #MissionPaani, which will be a nation-wide campaign.

At a media conference held in Mumbai today, Amitabh Bachchan officially launched the campaign in the presence of Shri Nitin Gadkari, Hon. Minister of Road transport and highways. The launch also featured video interactions with Shri Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, Hon. Jal Shakti Minister, Shri Devendra Fadnavis, Hon. Chief Minister, Maharashtra, ShriYogi Adityanath, Hon. Chief Minister, Uttar Pradesh and Sadh guru Jaggi Vasudev, Founder, Rally for Rivers, who connected Via a Live Link to express their support to this cause.

With a three-fold objective, #MissionPaani will focus on:

    A.    KNOW – Raise Awareness, making it a mass movement- JAN ANDOLAN
    B.    ACT – Take the Jal Pratigya (pledge to conserve water)
    C.    IMPACT – Highlight Innovative Pilot Projects with Measurable Change

Speaking about the campaign, legendary actor and Campaign Ambassador, Amitabh Bachchan said, "While some of us have been fortunate enough to have water to fulfil all of our needs, there are close to 600 million people in our country who face water scarcity every day. Keeping that in mind, I believe that it is our duty and responsibility to preserve water for these people as well as our future generations. It is the small changes that will lead to a national transformation, which can also lead to impactful results. With this campaign, each of us should pledge our support the cause of water conservation in the country.”

Expressing his views on this initiative, Mr. Narasimhan Eswar, Senior Vice President and Managing Director, RB Hygiene & Home, South Asia at RB, said, “In the last few years, we have focused on creating successful sanitation programs following the GOI’s initiative on Swachh Bharat aimed at ensuring access to clean and hygienic sanitation to all. It is crucial to take responsibility and take a step in the right direction towards water conservation. The first step towards that is raising awareness among the people of the nation about intelligently putting to use available water and devise action-based solutions that can further aid us in water conservation. It is an alarming situation for the entire nation which is why Maharashtra has implemented large scale water conservation solutions. By exploring scientific approach, at present, 19,000 villages follow strict water budgeting and have invented water conservation structures that can also be replicated in other parts of the state. As a result, even during drought and extreme conditions we have some relief. Through the campaign, I would urge everyone to become a water warrior and conserve water for us as well as for our future generations."

Speaking about the campaign and the undertakings of the UP Government towards the cause, Shri Yogi Adityanath, Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh said, “As a nation, we should be thankful to PM Narendra Modi for urging people towards a noble cause like ‘Water Conservation’. In our home state Uttar Pradesh, we have implemented numerous changes both at the governmental as well as the individual level, encouraging our state’s population to take up rainwater harvesting, tree plantation drives and judicious use of water. We have also initiated a drive to revive 10 rivers in our state and hope that we see fruitful results soon.
