    MUMBAI: After BARC (Broadcast Audience Research Council ) India’s rural data roll out, the broadcasters who were only targeting the premium consumers with premium launches in a big way, are now focusing on the FTA market also.

    Broadcast giant Star India is set to launch a new movie channel named ‘Star Utsav Movies’.

    As per available information Star India is planning to launch the channel in the month of June, once the IPL gets over.

    A source close to the development has confirmed the news to Indiantelevision.com,” Star Utsav Movies will be an FTA channel and the catalogue will have a mix of both old and new.”

    Since BARC India’s rural roll-out, Star India’s FTA channel Star Utsav has been constantly featuring in the list of top GEC channels. It has also made appearances in the list of top channels in across genres category.

    MUMBAI: Star Plus continues to rule the Hindi general entertainment channels (GECs) genre even after witnessing a dip in ratings. While the India – Sri Lanka T20 match helped DD National to make a comeback in the top 10 channels, according to Broadcast Audience Research Council (BARC) All India data of week 6. 

    Star Plus saw fall in ratings but was perched in the numero uno position with 711158 (‘000s) as against 724223 (‘000s) in week 5. Second in line Colors also shed some ratings but managed to secure its slot with 689432 (‘000s) as against 713106 (‘000s) in the previous week. 

    Zee Networks’ Hindi entertainment channel Zee TV bagged the third slot with an increase in ratings at 686349 (‘000s) followed by Zee’s free to air (FTA) channel Zee Anmol on fourth spot with 669828 (‘000s) and Star India’s FTA channel Star Ustav at number five with 437543 (‘000s). 

    Life OK fell to the sixth spot from five and scored 437228 (‘000s) whereas Sony Pal climbed up at number seven from its last week’s ninth position with 397413 (‘000s). Sony Entertainment Television stood at number eight with 349537 (‘000s) while its sister channel Sab exited the list. 

    DD National came back in the top ten channels in Hindi GECs and grabbed the ninth slot with 348202 (‘000s) followed by Rishtey in the tenth slot with 343724 (‘000s).

    NEW DELHI: The number of private satellite television channels in the country registered with the Information and Broadcasting Ministry fell by seven in the quarter ending September 2015 from 826 in quarter ending June to 819.

    However, the maximum number of pay channels carried by certain cable operators in non-conditional addressable system (CAS) rose from 214 to 233 in the same period. The maximum number of Free-to-Air (FTA) TV channels carried by certain cable operators in non-CAS areas in the period rose from 179 to 197. 

    The data is based on reports received by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) from broadcasters and multi system operators (MSOs).

    In areas served by non-addressable systems, the maximum number of TV channels carried in digital form as reported by cable operator – Hathway Cable & Datacom Limited – amongst those who have reported is 458. 

    The maximum number of TV channels carried in analogue form as reported by – Ortel Communications Limited – amongst those who have reported is 100. 

    In these areas, the maximum number of FTA channels carried, as reported by Hathway Cable & Datacom amongst those who have reported is 197. 

    The maximum number of pay channels carried as reported by a cable operator (Hathway Cable & Datacom) amongst those who have reported is 233. The maximum number of local channels carried as reported by a cable operator (Hathway Cable & Datacom) amongst those who have reported is 28.

    As on 30 September, 2015, there were a total of 226 MSOs who had been granted Permanent Registration (for 10 years) by the Ministry apart from 173 MSOs who had been granted Provisional Registration (for 10 years) by the Ministry of I&B for providing Cable TV services through Digital Addressable Systems (DAS).

    There had been a total of 252 pay channels as reported by broadcasters as on 30 June. During the quarter ending September 2015, three new pay channels – Colors Infinity HD, Colors Infinity, and Zee Café HD – were launched. During the quarter, one channel – The MGM was temporarily suspended. 

    During the quarter, the transmission mode of two channels – VH1 and Comedy Central – was changed from SD to HD. The total had risen to 254 pay TV channels by September end. 

    TRAI in its quarterly report said that apart from the free DTH service of Doordarshan Freedish, there are six private DTH operators. The total number of registered subscribers and active subscribers being served by these six private DTH operators were 81.47 million and 41.05 million respectively as on 30 September, 2015. 

    The Ministry had permitted a total of 90 Teleports by September end.

    NEW DELHI: Even as the migration to MPEG 4 will commence from April, Prasar Bharati is making attempts to increase the capacity of television channels that can be carried by its free-to-air DTH platform DD Free Dish under the existing MPEG 2.

    While declining to give the number of channels that it will gain in MPEG 2, a Prasar Bharati source confirmed to Indiantelevision.com that the switch-over to MPEG4 will be in two phases and the aim was to take the total capacity to 112.

    The source confirmed that the channels that bid successfully in the auction being held next week will be accommodated within MPEG 2.

    Meanwhile, the source denied any glitches in the transfer of DD Free Dish channels from INSAT 4B to GSAT 15 and said clear guidelines had been given to all channels on the steps they had to take in the regard and the Engineering section of Doordarshan was stepping in wherever needed. The source also said that it had been responding to calls from various channels in this connection.

    Asked why the ratings of some popular channels were falling on DD Free Dish, the source added that this was a question best answered by the channels.

    The official was reacting to a comment that even after the Broadcast Audience Research Council (BARC) India had commenced including rural area ratings in its weekly reports, there had been no perceptible increase in the figures of DD viewership despite claims by the pubcaster that it has the largest viewership in the country.

    The source said the popularity of DD Free Dish could be gauged from the fact that Aaj Tak and Big Magic, which are pay channels, were being run as FTA on Free Dish.

    A DD source added that the viewership of Big Magic, which had earlier been on Free Dish but had left it early this year had seen a steep fall and the channel had decided to come back on the platform.

    DD Free Dish is adopting the conditional access system (CAS) designed by the Bangalore-based ByDesign India Pvt Ltd.

    The ByDesign model is totally indigenous and built for DVB-C setup. This CAS solution will enable broadcasters and network operators to control access to their services by viewers, and thereby enabling them to extend their business models to subscription based schemes.

    This will mean that the Free Dish will become encrypted but will remain FTA. In addition to helping increase the number of channels on the platform, this will enable Free Dish to gauge the exact number of households relying on Free Dish as encrypted set top boxes will only be available with authorised dealers.
    DD Free Dish currently has 64 channels including its own channels and Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha TV. It also carries channels of All India Radio.

    The ByDesign CAS is provided by making access possible to the content, depending on subscriber credentials, which are generated by this CAS and sent through the broadcast system to receivers in the field. 

    Doordarshan has for the first time made a conscious effort to attract regional television channels by fixing a lower reserve of Rs 2 crore even as the price for the other channels remains the Rs 4.3 crore for its 26th e-auction slated for 15 February.

    This has been done considering the tremendous reach of DD Free Dish in semi-urban and rural areas all over the country.

    Reserved slot for regional language channel includes only Non-Hindi Channels (News or Non-News). Bhojpuri channels and Hindi regional channels have been kept as part of the general slots.

    Colors, which led the Hindi GEC genre since week 51 of 2015, dropped to the second slot, while Zee TV stood at the third position according to Broadcast Audience research Council (BARC) All India data. 

    Star Plus, which was last in the top position in week 49 of 2015, climbed up to the number one slot with 711538 (‘000s) followed by Colors in second place with 702727 (‘000s) and Zee TV in the third berth with 692249 (‘000s).

    Zee Network’s free-to-air (FTA) channel Zee Anmol bagged the fourth slot in the tally with 665127 (‘000s), whereas Star India’s FTA channel Star Ustav with 487280 (‘000s) stood at number five. 

    Sony Pal with 420179 (‘000s) and Rishtey with 416858 (‘000s) garnered the sixth and seventh slots respectively in week 4.
