    NEW DELHI: Anuradha Mitra has been appointed as the additional secretary and financial advisor in the electronics & information technology ministry. Mitra is a 1984 batch officer of the Indian Defence Accounts Service.

    She was until now the joint secretary & financial advisor in the same ministry. She has been assigned the new role by upgrading her position for a period of two years or until further orders, whichever is earlier.

    The ministry is in charge of the development of set-top boxes for digital addressable system, and for implementing the Indian conditional access system (iCAS) which has been adopted by Doordarshan’s Freedish DTH platform.

    NEW DELHI: The conuntry’s only free-to-air direct-to-home platform Doordarshan Freedish is holding its 31st auction on 5 October. Despite having touched a bid amount of Rs 5.2 crore in the last auction on 15 September, the new auction will have the same reserve price of Rs 4.3 crore.

    A DD announcement stated that the auction is for ‘vacant DTH slot’ without indicating the number of slots, though indications are that there may be more than one vacant slot.

    The slots have fallen or are falling vacant as the license period of one or more of the 80 TV channels on the platform is expiring. The announcement was clear that those channels who are already on the platform but whose licences are expiring by 31 December 2016 can participate. Others whose licenses will expire on or after 1 January 2017 are not permitted to participate.

    Sources told indiantelevision.com that Freedish is being encrypted through Indian Conditional Addressable System (iCAS) to keep a tab on the number of subscribers, but it would remain free-to-air.

    The e-auction will be conducted by M/s. C1 India Pvt. Ltd., Noida, which also conducted the first stage of the FM Radio Phase III auctions on behalf of Prasar Bharati.

    The participation amount (EMD) in the e-auction is Rs.1.5 crore which will be deposited in advance before or by 12 noon on 5 October along with processing fee of Rs.10,000 (non-refundable) in favour of PB (BCI) Doordarshan Commercial Service, New Delhi.

    Viacom18’s MTV Beats now on DD’s Freedish

    MUMBAI: Viacom18’s maiden music channel MTV Indies, which recently got replaced by new kid MTV Beats, has been placed on Doordarshan’s Freedish as a free to air (FTA) channel.

    MTV Beats has replaced Viacom18’s currently running channel X Zone on the pubcaster’s DTH platform that carries FTA channels and is popular in semi-urban and rural areas of India.

    The Hindi music channel will be available on various other DTH platforms and bundled with Viacom18’s offerings as a pay channel.

    MTV Beats was conceived and launched recently to replace MTV Indies with an aim to address a mass audience. It will predominantly focus on Bollywood music. MTV Beats is targeted at 15–30-year-olds across urban and rural India.

    Viacom18 has also acquired an additional licence to launch MTV Beats HD.

    9X Jalwa Hindi music channel, Premiere Cinema and Sony Wah movie channels and Vision Shiksha educational channel was made available on Freedish after 30 May auction. The platform has space for 80 channels altogether including its own channels and Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha TV along with 24 All India Radio channels.

This may be extended by five minutes if a bid is received just before the closing time. Of the reserve price, Rs 1.1 crore will be deposited within a month of placement and another Rs 1.1 crore within two months along with service tax of 14.5 per cent on the bid amount.

    The balance bid amount needs to be deposited within six months, failing which the deposited amount would be forfeited and the channel discontinued after a 21-day discontinuation notice.

    Channels already on Freedish are news channels such as Aaj Tak, News 24 and ABP News, and entertainment channels such as Star Utsav, Viacom18’s Rishtey and Rishtey Cineplex, and Sony Pal.
